Convert PS1 on PC saves to PS3/PSP save format

Question

I've been hunting for some PS1 game saves as my PS1 memory cards died. GameFAQs has many more saves listed for the Original PS1 save format rather than the PSV format. The PS3/PSP require PSV format to work, and I don't even know what to do with the gme files GameFAQs lists for PS1.

I know I can use the Sony Memory Card adapter for physical memory cards (and I own one) but that doesn't help me here unless I can somehow copy .gme files with the adapter from my PC, then to the PS3. If I can do that, that solves the problem as well, but I don't know how/if I can do that.

How can I convert these PS1 saves (.gme) to PS3/PSP format (.psv)?

Asked by Ben Brocka

Answer

This guide explains how to convert .MCR PSX memcard images to PS3 format.

PSXGE can handle conversion between most popular PSX memcard image formats, including .GME to .MCR (the format you're looking for in PSXGE is .MC, just rename it to .MCR).

Help me identify this old Playstation Role Playing Game

Question

I remember playing this game back around 2000 or 2001. It was an RPG game. It had amazing computer generated cut scenes for it's time. It was turn based. You has your characters normal attacks, some sort of magic form, and items that you could use. Each character had different normal attacks that required timing a button press to continue the attack. If you got every button press timed properly you would complete the attack and do more damage. I think there were some button mashing moments with attacks or items too. I don't remember much about the story, but I think it was like other RPGs. Save the world, save the girl, live happily ever after. Oh an like I said in the title, I am pretty sure it was on the original Playstation.

Answer

I believe the game you are looking for is The Legend of Dragoon. It was on the original Playstation and was released in North America on June 11, 2000.

The combat system you are refering to would be the Addition system. There would be a square in the center of the screen and a box that would close in around that center square. You would press the X key when the box hit the center square. If you did this successfully for each part of the attack you would finish the attack and your character would call out the name of the attack. The longer additions (more button presses) had a chance to be "countered" by your enemies which made a sound and made the screen turn red. You would then need to press the O key when the box hit the center square.

I think the magic forms you are refering to are the games Dragoon Spirit forms. You would transform into a Dragoon, each with their own element (fire, water, shadow, etc). You could do a sort of melee attack that needed button presses based on a rotating circle continuing on the Addition style system. You also had different magic spells unique to each form that did single target damage, aoe damage, or in some cases healed your party.

There are also items that you can hit the X button as fast as you can to increase the multiplier damage from the item.

The protagonist in the game is Dart, and yes it is similar to what you said... Dart's childhood friend Shana is taken and he sets out to rescue her. This of course leads him further into the struggle to save the world from the God of Destruction.

If you couldn't tell from my answer... I freakin' love this game! Now I must go play it again for the 100th time!

What is the difference between Breath of Fire III for the PSX and for the PSP (or PSPGo)?

Question

I am aware that some games (like the early Final Fantasy titles, Disgaea) which are on PSP (more appropriately, PSN) are later versions with a small amount of extra content. Normally it is fairly easy to find this information out with a bit of searching.

However I have not been able to find anything on the differences (if any) between Breath of Fire III as a PSN download for the PSP go and the original on PSX. Can anybody enlighten me? Also, is there some better way to find out this kind of information than blindly searching the internets with Google?

Answer

AFAIK it's the same with better graphics, picture gallery and the ability to share fishing minigames with friends.

EDIT: Someone made a list of the differences:

  • The title screen is different

  • Some slowdown before attacks until you've had the game on for a bit.

  • The electric room with the machine soldier in the "Factory" has permanent slowdown which actually makes it a lot easier to do that sequence of lever presses. I think this was done on purpose because there's no other parts like it in the game.

  • Hachio's name is "Haochi"

  • The room with the block puzzle in angel tower has one of the passages decreased in width and you can't get into random battles to teleport to the top to skip the puzzle.

  • Stallion's color scheme is completely different. He is Brown, white, and yellow if I recall.

  • "Utmost attack" had its name changed to "Vacuum Wave". I think it is because Stallion was supposed to look like "Ultraman", a Japanese hero. Utmost attack must have been one of his techniques?"

  • In the Desert, getting into random encounters does not turn Ryu in a random direction. Turning right once, then walking straight until you reach Manmo still works thankfully.

  • Dupe glitch does not work anymore.

  • The Holy Mantle seems to work better. If you walk perfectly straight, you will go a while without fighting. Take a single turn, and it's battle time though. I remember it doing absolutely nothing.

  • Finally, all of the music has added instruments which in my opinion make the music in the game a LOT better. I have never heard those extra sounds even on my I-pod. When I play my PSP on TV, you can still hear the new sounds. I wonder if the music had some sort of error in all of the tracks to begin with? Every song I can think of has something new in it.

How do you defeat Zeto in Legend of Legaia?

Question

I'm currently in the first mist generator castle where Zeto is. How do I beat him easily, as the call wave is very powerful. I'm currently at level 12.

Answer

Here's a video that shows a strategy for level 12 players:

The basic strategy appears to be to focus on defense when Zeto uses Call Wave, as that indicates he'll be doing a powerful attack the next round. After this attack, focus on healing first before you return to dealing damage.

This FAQ suggests the following combos to deal damage:

Vahn should simply do: right, right, left, right, right left.
Noa has an awesome seven slot combo: down, up, up, up, left, down, right.
Gala should just use the Neo Rising move: left, left, right, up left.

Help remembering a game where players throw things to each other

Question

I played a PlayStation game sometime in year 2000 and I want to play it again. But I can't remember the name of the game.

It's a game where you select a character and then you throw things like big rocks to the other players. There are also items which you can get in the game which changes the effectiveness of the things that you throw at your enemies.

I can remember the name of one of the characters, its called Apache.

Sorry that's all the details I can remember.

Answer

I think you could be thinking of the game Poitter's Point (AKA Poy Poy). It was basically a multiplayer game where you hurled rocks at each other. I believe there were tournaments where you could win gold coins and you could gain gold hearts from the opposing players.

Do PS1 games play quietly on a PS2?

Question

I've got a slim silver PS2 and wanted to buy some PS1 games. I've noticed that the PS2 games that come on CDs instead of DVDs (blue disc vs normal silver) spin loudly - it's like I left a hairdryer in my game cabinet! Just like how CDs spin up noisily in a PC or laptop DVD drive - I always found it an obnoxious design flaw.

Well my question is do you know if PS1 games are like this in the PS2? If so I'll probably spend the extra few $$$ to get a PS1 to catch up on my vintage gamez.

Thanks

Answer

I don't recall any PS1 games being particularly noisy in my PS2. Generally the drive speed is slower for PS1 games unless you change the settings in the menu.

Help identify a PS1 game involving robots

Question

So when I was younger I never had a gaming console, I was never allowed one. But whenever I went to my grandparents on the weekend I played on their PlayStation 1. I remember one game that they had bought for me and I loved it. No matter how much I search I just cannot find it again. I've even looked through a full list of games for the PS1 (or supposedly a full list).

What I remember is:

  • Game involved robots.
  • Robots were customisable.
  • As you fought new robots you unlocked new bodies/weapons etc.
  • The game was on the PlayStation 1, not sure if it was available on any other platform.
  • It was not robot wars!
  • The robots were cartoony rather than realistic.
  • the arenas could either be empty or have obstacles.
  • The game may have been multiplayer not 100% sure.
  • You took control of the robot when fighting.
  • This is going back a good 7-8 years.

Thanks in advance!

Answer

Was the game Robo Pit?

You can build your own robot and the graphics were rather cartoony. The game came out in 96, so it was definitely more than 7-8 years ago though.

What was this epic PS1 co-op game with a wide variety of weapons to fight with?

Question

Right, I only remember a little but it was a epic game, really really fun and great for its time.

It was for Playstation 1, it was 3D, and also allowed at least 2 players. It was the sort of 2-player game where it is co-op and you shared a screen, not one each.

I remember you could play a old man, a kid, and maybe a woman.

You were on a cruise ship (I think) and some terrorists (or someone) were taking it over, you would play one of the character and fight the bad guys, best thing about it was I remember fighting with a lot of weapons, like brooms and such.

Would be great if someone can guess it from what I have said, sorry for the lack of information.

Answer

The game is called Crisis Beat.

Sorry, there's no Wikipedia page to link you to, but there seem to be some videos of it on Youtube.
