Can the Wii take screenshots of Virtual Console games?

Question

Animal Crossing City Folk for the Wii has the ability to take in-game screenshots and save them on an SD card in the Wii. Is the screenshot ability strictly dependent on the game, or is it included in the Wii system somewhere? Can I use it to take screenshots of Virtual Console games?

Asked by KatieK

Answer

No, you can't.

This is a feature in specific games, not a feature in the Wii itself, so can't be used to screenshot games without this feature.

In DDR Hottest Party 3 can you play hotseat multiplayer on one dance pad?

Question

If I have only one dance pad, can my wife and I take turns playing 'multiplayer', or do we just have to play single player and share? (so we can record our high scores separately for example.)

Asked by Ender

Answer

You cannot "hotseat" one pad with different scores.

You have to have 2 for multiplayer. You can have separate player accounts that will track different scores when you have more than one pad, but you cannot use different accounts to track different scores at the same time with one pad.

You'll have to play single player under one profile and share the score.

How to quickly pair a guest's Wii remote?

Question

Every time my friends are over with their own pair of Wii remotes, I have to do this hit-or-miss pairing dance over and over again. I'm not sure what the "correct" way of doing this is, and the manual is kind of vague.

So, what's the easiest (fastest) way of (temporarily) using a guest's Wii Remote on my Wii?

Asked by Sietse

Answer

The easiest way is this:

Edit: Here's the text from the manual. Any use of bold, numbers, and bullets are from the actual manual text.

Wii Operations Manual - System Setup, page 20

ONE TIME MODE - This mode allows you to temporarily use your remote on a console other than your own or to use a friends remote on your console. It does not delete the Standard Mode setting stored in the remote.

Wii Operations Manual - System Setup, page 21

One Time Mode Synchronization

NOTE: This mode temporarily removes the Standard Mode synchronization setup for all remotes until the power of the Wii console is turned off. When the power is turned on again, the Standard Mode settings will return.

  1. Press the HOME Button on a remote that is synchronized with the console.

  2. Select the Wii Remote Settings option from the Home Button menu, then select the Reconnect option.

  3. Press the 1 and 2 Buttons simultaneously on the remote that you want to synchronize with the console.
The order in which you synchronize remotes will set the player order for multiplayer games.

  4. The Player LEDs will blink during the syncing process. When the blinking stops, the connection is complete.See diagram at right for description of what the blinking indicates.

Next to said diagram:

During the syncing process, the number of LEDs that blink will show the battery life of the remote that is being synchronized.

After the syncing process, LED that is lit shows the player number for that remote.

NOTE: One Time Mode synchronization is temporary. The Wii Remote will lose this synchronization under the following conditions:

  • When your turn off the console by pressing the Power Button on either the remote or the console.
  • When starting up a game or Channel from the Wii Menu.
  • When returning to the Wii Menu after exiting from a game or Channel.
  • When you select Reset on the HOME Menu Screen.
  • When you press the Reset button on the front of the console.

Is there any point in collecting puzzle pieces in Donkey Kong Country Returns?

Question

This is very similar to this question, except mine is about puzzle pieces (although I'm curious for a more satisfying answer to that question as well).

Does anyone know if there are rewards (other than getting image gallery or music gallery stuff updated) for collecting all the puzzle pieces? Also, what about beating levels in Mirror Mode or (like the other question) Time Trials?

Asked by Jeff

Answer

No there is not. The extra gallery items are the only reward.

What is the biggest SD memory card a Nintendo Wii can support?

Question

OK I read that the Wii can support SD cards up to 2 GB then I read of an update that removed this limitation.

What is the actual maximum SD card size the Wii can support if I keep it updated with official updates from Nintendo? Also is there a limitation on the SD card type (SD, SDHC...)?

Asked by AlexV

Answer

The other thing to bear in mind is that some (older) games won't recognise larger cards so you may end up having to buy several cards anyway.

We have a 8GB card that the kids store Wii channels on that works just fine, but Guitar Hero won't recognise it so we have to use a 2GB to store the GH downloadable content (extra songs etc.)

Will the Wii-U be compatible with Gamecube games?

Question

So despite some initial confusion about whether the WiiU was an accessory or a console successor to the Wii, I now understand that it is, in fact, a new console.

During its initial presentation, Nintendo lavished about the fact that the WiiU would be fully backwards compatible, at least with the Wii.

I have also heard that it will use similar disc-based technology as its predecessor, and I was wondering if that applied to the Gamecube mini-discs as well (which the Wii was able to play).

Asked by Raven Dreamer

Answer

According to the specifications found on Nintendo of Japan's website, the drive doesn't accept GameCube's small 8cm discs, only the new high-density discs for Wii U and the normal 12cm Wii discs - so no, it won't be compatible.

This also fits with the likely strategy they use for backwards compatibility; they shut all the new stuff off so the console behaves just like the Wii - that's how they do it on the Wii for GC stuff, on the 3DS for DS stuff, and on the DS for GBA stuff. AFAIK, that technique doesn't work very well if you're trying to chain it like this, since the Wii part would have to turn all of its stuff off to switch to GameCube mode, and that ends up getting way too messy.

Can I take snapshots (~savegames) of the current game in the Nintendo Wii emulator?

Question

I'm replaying old SNES games and right now the Boss of DK Contry 2 (King K. Rool) gets the best of me. I always die just shortly before the end and have to replay the whole thing all over again. I have 90+ lives, so that's not an issue, I'm just tired of repeating the same thing over and over (I know, it's pathetic).

Asked by bitmask

Answer

The answer is shortly "No."

Appart from the save features that are present in the games themselves, the Wii's Virtual Console does not offer any savegame features.

The closest thing that it has is Suspended Play, that is available for most Virtual Console games (I belive Nintendo 64 and Neo Geo games are exluded). If you open the Home menu while in game, your gamestate will be saved and you can safely exit the game and resume where you left off when you start the game next time.

However, this feature prevents, by design, the kind of functionality that you are looking for.
Once you restart the game, the suspension data is deleted automaticly. What's more, it cannot be copied for safekeeping using Wii's operating system. That is, you can not copy it to your SD card and the copy it back after you loose to the boss.

I belive it would be theoreticly possible to use this state data to resume from certain point in game, but doing so would require rather drastic measures and I wouldn't recommend even trying them for something like this.

I've heard that the boss can be a tough nut to crack, but I'm afraid that you'll just have to endure it and keep practicing. You'll get it eventually.

Where to post game cheats?

Question

My ten year old son spent several hours mapping out the Power Up Panels in New Super Mario Bro's Wii, and now he'd like to share his findings with the internet masses. The trouble is, I don't know much about where to share the fruits of his labor. I created a web page to host his maps:

http://JumpingFishes.com/PowerUpPanels .

Can you recommend a forum or other venue that would appreciate all of my son's hard work?

Asked by gilly3

Answer

I usually look to gamefaqs.com. Though they are primarily limited to text-based data they do have a form to submit maps and images (and I think this qualifies).

Looking at the New Super Mario Bros. Wii section, I notice that there are already several FAQs that feature the same data collected by your son (though his versions are nicer looking). I would look into uploading it there anyway if he is so obliged, as GameFAQs is no stranger to redundancy.

Do I need two nunchucks for 2 player mode in Skylanders on the Wii?

Question

I have just bought Skylanders for my son's birthday tomorrow. Just been informed he's got a friend coming around, and they are likely to want to play Skylanders in 2 player mode. I have two Wii plus controllers, but only one nunchuck. Do both players need a nunchuck, or can I get away with just one?

I'm guessing I need two, but a quick answer may save me a midnight trip to the local supermarket.

Answer

The game requires a Nunchuk for each player, you cannot play it with Wii remote alone, sorry...

Wii Shop Channel out of service

Question

I have just connected my old Wii and when I go to the shop (to download demos) it says its out of service. Is it turned off forever or can I somehow use it?

Asked by IAdapter

Answer

The Wii Shop channel is still up. Since you have an older Wii, try doing a system update and making sure that you are connected to the internet.

Wii browser capabilities: Specifically: chat/JS/Flash/local storage

Question

I've been asked about the specific capabilities of the Nintendo Wii.

  • Does it have a web browser? If so, is it suitably enabled with JavaScript/Flash, etc.? I'm thinking could it support a chatroom-type scenario?
  • Is it possible for the web browser to save web content onto some form of local storage? I'm thinking chat logs, web pages and/or images/videos.

I don't personally have a Wii and don't know anyone that has who can give me a definitive answer. Hopefully one of you guys will have tried pushing a Wii browser further than most!

Asked by Program.X

Answer

The default Wii browser is called the Internet Channel. It has limited support for JS and Flash, but I believe it provides some form of local storage.

Is there a reward for earning all gold medals when Donkey Kong Country Returns is in time attack mode?

Question

In Donkey Kong Country Returns, after beating a level, you unlock Time Attack mode, where you have to beat the level within certain time thresholds to earn gold, silver or bronze medals. Earning gold and silver medas is insanely hard, requiring near-perfection.

Do I get anything by earning all gold medals as opposed to just earning any medal?

Answer

After completing world 1, Jungle, I went back to find all the puzzle pieces and K•O•N•G letters, and earn a time-attack medal in all the levels. When I found all puzzle pieces and letters in world 1, but before I earned time-attack medals on every level, the hidden 1-K Platform Panic level unlocked/appeared.

This leads me to believe that you don't get anything for earning any time-attack medals.

Compatibility of US Rock Band equipment with Australian Wii? (RB3 in particular)

Question

I want to pick up the wireless keyboard for Rock Band 3 for Wii. In Australia, as far as I can tell, only EB Games has imported it, and it costs nearly $200AU for the pleasure.

Including shipping, it would only be about $100AU to order the keyboard from the States. However, PAL/NTSC compatibility and region-locking issues are making me uneasy in that regard.

Obviously, the game itself will be region locked (and I'll probably buy that here), but what about the peripherals?

Asked by Margaret

Answer

It works!

(Caveat: Thus far I've only been playing on non-Pro easy mode, but if that's working fine I can't imagine that the other buttons are going to cause issues...)

As at July 2010, are there any upcoming tennis games to be released that make use of this expansion device?

Why can we suddenly not connect two guitars and drums to Rock Band on Wii?

Question

So, we've had Rock Band 3 for the Wii for about a month, and it's been working fine. We've got two guitars (one rock band 2 vintage, one newer), plus the pro drumset.

Everything was working fine, but suddenly, we can't get all three of these instruments to connect at the same time. It seems like any two work, but if we connect a third, the blue light goes on but none of the four controller LEDs lights. We've resynced, unplugged, replugged and so on.

I don't think we changed anything, but maybe we did and I don't know what it was.

Answer

I'm presuming you're talking about the wireless instruments with the little USB dongles that plug into the Wii. I moved to xbox a while back, but I played RB on Wii so I'll try to dredge up some advice...

I'd guess that your most likely problem is a lack of enough power to the dongles. Are you chaining the dongles together (bass plugged into guitar plugged into drums plugged into console)? If so, you might want to play with the order of the chain, or see if you can break it and plug the dongles into multiple USB ports (I think the Wii has a couple, but my memory's fuzzy).

Even if the order makes a difference, you might want to invest in a powered USB hub and plug all three dongles directly into the hub (make sure you get a powered model with an adapter that plugs into the wall, not one of the super-cheap "self-powered" ones). This will ensure that all your dongles are getting plenty of juice so they can communicate with your instruments.

Why are there only 12 Wii Demos?

Question

I just started to use Wii Shop, but I'm shocked that there are only 12 Wii demos. What is the reason for this? I know that there are not many Wii games, but 12 demos looks like nothing when you compare it to how many demos are available for the Xbox 360 or PS3.

Maybe it's because of the country I live in? Do other countries have more demos? For example, Sony is known for not allowing you to view some music videos on YouTube based on your region.

Answer

I believe the reason is technical in nature. The Wii has a very limited amount of disk space. I don't think there is enough room for storing demos, especially for downloadable games.

In recent system updates, Nintendo has created the ability to play games from an external SD card. Maybe there will be more demos as a result.

Limited disk space was also an issue with the Xbox, yet there appear to have been many demos available on that platform. Maybe, then, it is also just a cultural issue: the Wii ecosystem just isn't a place where demos are common. This can be frustrating. I once downloaded a Metroid: Prime Corruption "demo" only to find out it was a game trailer.

What are my options for motion control on the three consoles?

Question

What are my options for motion control on the three consoles? What are the pros and cons of each motion control system on the Wii, Xbox 360, and Playstation 3?

Answer

The real question you want to ask yourself is "what kind of games do I want to play." That question affects the "best" choice pretty heavily.

Hopefully, the below list will give a better overview to help your choice.

The Nintendo Wii

  • Largest current library
  • cheapest standalone console
  • You can acquire controllers (wii-motes) or even wii motion-plus versions packaged as parts of certain games.

Playstation Move

  • Most expensive controllers
  • Most expensive console
  • requires peripheral (Playstation Eye)
  • Small game library, (some current playstation games getting retroactive support)

Microsoft Kinect

  • most expensive peripheral (the Kinect itself)
  • excellent non-kinect 3rd party support (you may buy a kinect, but at the end of the day, you can fall back on Halo, if that's your kit)
  • no extra costs in controllers
  • small game library, few (none?) "hardcore" games with kinect support.
  • Milo was just plain creepy.

MW3: Care Package Specialities

Question

In Black Ops, care packages sometimes contained bonuses like the grim reaper or the death machine. Does Modern Warfare 3 have any special features with their care packages, or are they all available pointstreak items?

I should note I'm playing the wii version, which doesn't have all the PS3/XBOX features.

Thanks.

Answer

There aren't any care package drops which aren't also point streak rewards themselves. In fact, care package drops from the Assault strike package will contain only Assault point streak rewards.

(I think the exception is Counter UAV - I feel like you might be able to get this from an Assault care package although it's a Support pointstreak)

The same applies for the Support pointstreak "Escort Airdrop" in the Support strike package; it will only drop Support pointstreak reward crates.

There are no "care package only" rewards similar to the way the Death Machine was in Black Ops.

What are all the sword moves in the Wii version of Twilight Princess?

Question

I want to jump back into this game and complete it, but I've forgotten what all the secret techniques are that you get from the wolf and how to use them. Can someone list them?

Answer

Ending Blow – When enemy is on the ground, target with Z, then attack with A

Shield Attack – Target enemy with Z, then move nunchuk sharply forward.

Back Slice – Target enemy with Z, hold or on the nunchuk and press A to dodge. Hit A again to roll, then swing the Wiimote to attack.

Helm Splitter – Perform a shield attack, then hit A.

Jump Strike – Target enemy with Z, hold A until your sword charges then release A.

Mortal Draw - With your sword sheathed, and not targeting an enemy, wait for the game to prompt you (usually just as an enemy attacks), then press A.

Great Spin – Shake the nunchuk left and right. Must be at full health.

Can you import included and DLC tracks from Just Dance 2 into Just Dance 3?

Question

My wife has been enjoying Just Dance 2 on the Wii since I gave it to her last Christmas, and has actually bought a number of additional tracks - enough that I had to buy her a big SD card just for the game. I'm thinking about getting the newest version for her, but I'm curious if she will be able to import the included and DLC tracks from Just Dance 2 into Just Dance 3.

(The game's web site is horrid, I've spent quite a bit of time over the last several days searching various official sources of information looking for an answer to no avail. Hoping someone that actually owns the title will know.)

Answer

Turns out the answer is NO. There appears to be ZERO connection between the two games. Different DLC content in their stores too.
