What DLC items are included in the Gears of War 3 Season Pass?

Question

A friend and I were looking to get back to Gears of War 3 again and see what was new in terms of DLC. I went a-lookin' and... well, there's definitely plenty to sort through.

As I was looking through the list, I came across a "Season Pass" DLC. It's quite expensive compared to the rest, however it claims to offer 33% off from buying its contents normally.

Can't say I'd argue with 33% off. Unfortunately, the listing for this DLC doesn't list what comes with it:

The Season Pass serves as your pre-order (at a 33% discount!) of four downloadable content packages that you will receive every quarter, starting in November.

I realize that it can't exactly name what isn't out yet, but what of the ones that have been released? Following the every quarter logic, two of them have become available and one should be on the way. There are definitely more than two listings available for Gears of War 3...

Which of the DLC packs available for Gears of War 3 are provided when the Season Pass is purchased?

Asked by Aeo

Answer

The first Gears of War 3 Season Pass grants access to:

and the Season Pass exclusive Liquid Metal Skins.

I have it and can confirm.

I said first because there's been talk of more season passes to come although I'm not sure whether it's been confirmed or not.

Can I get an onyx medal more than once?

Question

I just got my first onxy medal for building 1000 fortifications in Horde mode. Can I get an onyx medal again? So if through the next several months of playing I build 1000 fortifications again. Will the medal xp bonus pop?

Asked by mpenrow

Answer

Certain onyx medals can be earned more than once. I play arcade campaign alot and I have earned the medal for getting 7.5million points 5 times and I'm over half way to earning the onyx medal again for killing 1100 humans in beast mode. But i haven't been getting any extra for building fortifications in horde mode.

Which multiplayer map has the Cleaver as a weapon pickup for Horde

Question

Which of the multiplayer maps has the cleaver as a weapon pickup for Horde mode? I am trying to get the 40 kills needed to unlock the execution and it is very slow going waiting for a butcher.

Asked by mpenrow

Answer

I googled a lot and found some good tips for getting cleaver in horde for execution.

You can't have cleaver as normal pickup, you have to get it from enemies.

Btw i should also note that enemies carrying the cleaver wont spawn each time so you will need some luck to get them.

Tips from experienced players:

  1. To easily unlock the execution for the cleaver, go to Horde mode, and select Drydock. The Butchers will appear on Level 2. Keep picking up the cleaver and getting kills with it to unlock its execution.

  2. Checkout, Level 5 Horde mode.

  3. Mercy, wave 4-5

Monsters that carry cleaver:

  • Butchers
  • Savage Theron

Gears of war 3 multiplayer level / experience table

Question

I just reached level 50 and it is suddenly getting pretty tough to level up. I heard somewhere that on GoW 2 level 70 was about halfway to 100, but on GoW 3 it is around level 60.

Is there a list of experience needed to reach each level for GoW3?

'Beta' medal - Can the game be completed to 100% without it?

Question

The medal "Beta Tester - Participated in the Beta" is locked for me as I did not take part in the beta tests. Does this mean that I cannot complete the game to 100%?

Answer

I suppose it depends on what you consider to be "100%" in the game.

Getting all of the achievements is what is required for the Xbox Dashboard to put a game in your "completed" list. If you're going by achievements, there is no achievement that requires you to get every medal (Seriously 3.0 specifically does not include this medal), and no specific achievement for this medal.

Does Gears of War 3 allow local co-op + online co-op simultaneously?

Question

Does GoW3 allow local co-op and online co-op at the same time? I want to know if my friend and I can play on split screen from my house and join a couple of friends online. What kind of games are allowed this way (if any)?

Answer

According to this website, yes, it is possible.

Does Gears support split screen play? How many players?

You can play 2 player split screen. The screen is split horizontally.

Is splitscreen with online play supported? (Combo Co-Op)

Yes, but both players must have Live Gold subscriptions.

Is LAN or System-Link play supported?

Yes, you can play any of the modes via LAN for the supported number of players.

How many players are supported in co-op play?

You can play 4 players through the campaign in co-op. You can play 5 players in Horde or Beast mode.

Should I play Gears of War 3 directly instead of going through 1 and 2?

Question

I haven't played Gears of War 1 or 2. Because of the great marketing hype created for Gears 3, I was thinking of buying one. How will my gaming experience be if I directly jump on to Gears 3?

Answer

If you only play multiplayer, then you aren't missing anything by skipping Gears 1 or 2 (other than familiarity with the game mechanics).

As for the single player, there is a story and it does tie up a lot of loose ends from the first two games (I haven't played much of the campaign yet, this is just what I've heard from reviews and such). There is a "previously on Gears" intro movie that you can play before the campaign starts to get you up to speed.

If you watch the intro movie, and possibly read about the plot of the first two games on the internet, you would probably have enough info to not be confused by the story in Gears 3.

Would I have to purchase two Gears of War 3 season passes?

Question

I play multiplayer and Co-op with my boyfriend on the same Xbox console. I was thinking of getting the season pass for the DLC but would I need to buy two, one pass for each of us? Are they just registered to your accounts or will the DLC be available on the console for us to both use?

Answer

If you are both always playing on the same console, then I don't think it is necessary to build two season passes.

All DLC and XBLA games have the following licensing restrictions:

  • All GamerTags on your home console (i.e. where you normally play, and you (probably) originally downloaded the item) can use it
  • Your GamerTag can use the item on another console, assuming the console is connected to LIVE.

So as long as all the Gears 3 uses the standard Xbox LIVE licensing (I don't see why it wouldn't), then you should both be able to use all of the Gears 3 DLC assuming you are both always on the same console.

As an aside, at least for the Versus maps (not sure about Horde mode), but as long as the host has the DLC then everyone can play on the new maps (even if they don't have the DLC).

What are the body part damage modifiers on GOW3?

Question

Are there any damage modifiers on Gears of War 3, depending on what part of the body you are shooting?

I know you can get headshots with certain weapons, so there must be a damage modifier on that body part at least.

An example; 1 shot to the head with a longshot is a kill, 1 shot to the torso with the longshot will not even down the target.

Answer

I don't believe that Gears of War 3 pays attention to what body part is being shot. A shot to the head obviously does more damage with certain weapons like you said. Getting shot in the arm, leg, or chest should do the same damage with most weapons.

Besides the head, GoW 3 doesn't have specific damage modifiers to certain body parts.

On a side note, when I was searching for a chart for proof of this, I found a chart of the weapons and their damage, fire rates, and clip size. This could be useful in some way to you:

Gears of War 3 Horde Boss (Berserker)

Question

If I'm not mistaken, the only way to kill a Berserker in horde mode (or any mode for that matter) is with the Hammer of Dawn.

But what if you are playing on a map that doesn't have a native Hammer of Dawn? How do you kill a Berserker boss then?

Answer

The only way to kill a Berserker is NOT with a Hammer of Dawn.

Berserkers have a ridiculously thick skin that causes most weapons to do little or no damage, but a small amount of fire from a Scorcher causes its skin to become permeable to other weapons. Most of the time in horde, a free Scorcher will spawn during a Berserker boss wave - simply use it for a few seconds on a Berserker until its skin looks molten (black and orange), then use another weapon until its skin returns to normal. Repeat as necessary.

Grenades and other explosives will also damage a Berserker, even when its skin is normal, but they are still more effective after the application of a Scorcher.

Can the “Enriched and Fortified” achievement in Gears of War 3 be obtained by staggering the waves?

Question

Can this achievement be obtained by staggering the waves? For example, if one night I complete waves 1-10 and the next day I start from wave 11 and complete up to wave 40, and the next day I complete waves 41-50, will I get the achievement?

Or will I have to complete it in a single play through?

Answer

Yes, you can get the achievement this way.

You can check your progress in the stats page from the main menu, although this will only show your progess in 10 wave chunks. For example, if you manage to complete wave 40, in the stats page you will see 'Wave 31 - 40' with a tick next to it. You can then complete wave 41 to 50 on another play through to get the achievement.

There is, however, a ribbon that you can get for completing wave 1 to 50 in one sitting (this is separate from the achievement, so you can view it as an additional challenge):

  • Long Hauler – Completed all 50 waves in one session

Xbox 360 3D Guide

Question

I am playing Gears of War 3 in 3D. My problem is that the Xbox guide doesn't appear to support 3D. Does anybody know how to fix this? Enabling 3D in the Xbox settings doesn't do anything. Achievements come up the same way. Basically the game is 3D but everything built in to the system isn't.

Here are some images:

First, I do have 3D enabled in the Xbox settings:

3D is enabled

Next, take a look at what Gears of War 3 looks like when the TV has 3D turned off (if I am not mistaken, it is a 2160x1920 image that the TV is scaling down to 1080x1920):

3D is on in Gears of War, off on the TV

This next image shows what happens when I turn 3D on for the TV (it is now a standard 1080p image with both halves of the previous image being interlaced in polarized light for the glasses):

3D is on for the TV

Now I'll pull up the Xbox Guide (TV is still in 3D mode):

Xbox Guide, TV is in 3D mode

Here is that same image when the TV is not in 3D mode:

Xbox Guide, Gears of War 3 in 3D mode, TV in normal mode

It may be difficult to see, but the game went back to the split images (see second photograph) and the guide is just sitting in the center overtop the images. Achievements do the same thing. Basically, they are not being split into 3D frames and it is actually painful whenever I pull up the guide or earn an achievement. That's right, I feel physical pain whenever I earn an achievement.

There must be a way to make the Xbox interface come up in 3D as well.

Answer

The reason for the weird system popups is that the Xbox doesn't support 3D natively. It's just the game itself that outputs two half-size images on a normal 2D output. The TV then pulls out the two images and displays one to each eye when you put it manually in 3D side by side mode.

If you look at the Xbox guide during Gears with the TV in 2D mode what you see is what the TV uses to split the two images. It will take the left half of the screen with the left half of the dashboard and display it to the left eye (only) in 3D mode. The right half of the dashboard goes to the right eye (only) so the two eyes see totally different content.

If the dashboard knew that the game was in 3D side by side mode it could potentially show two smaller squashed and repeated dashboards, one on the left and one on the right so that both eyes see the same image in 3D, but it doesn't.

Also you're not seeing a 2160x1920 image. You're seeing a 1280x720 image as generated by Gears, with each half of the image dedicated to one eye. The 360 then upscales to a single 1920x1080 image. The TV further upscales the image for each eye to fill the screen. So it's 640x720 per eye upscaled to 1920x1080 per eye on an active 3D display, or sidescaled to 1920x560 on a passive 3D display. Either way it will look blocky.

What are the benefits of having more than one command post in Horde 2.0?

Question

In each of the Horde maps you have the option of setting up a command post when you start the game in one of 4 possible positions, which is free to set up. After that you are able to buy a second command post in any of the other 3 available positions for $2000.

Usually, I try to pick the best location when setting up the first command post, and at the moment I can't see any advantages of setting up a second command post. Especially when that money could be spent upgrading barriers and turrets, and a second command post doesn't seem to have any immediate effect.

Am I missing something? Are there any benefits for having multiple command posts?

Answer

From experience, a single command post is sufficient to occupy the money and man-power of two players. Unless you want to spread out or, as Tom-grochowicz mentions in his answer, build a back-up base, there isn't a lot of gain to be had from building this in the early game.

However, if you are playing with more than two people then the additional defences unlocked by having a second command post can be used to compliment each other. For example, you might want a turret per person, which you will need at least another command post for.

When you haven't been playing Horde mode long, there are certain unlocks for Horde 2.0 that a second command post can help with:
The Infinite Ammo mutator for Horde requires you to Earn a Combat Engineer ribbon 100 times. To earn this ribbon, you must work on five fortifications in a single round [source]. A second (or more) command post will provide a new set of potentially cheap barriers to build and repair, which will enable you (and others) to get this medal faster. This will also help to level up your fortifications faster.

When you have been playing horde mode for a while, you will have achieved some or all of the fortification levels and unlocks. Many of these make fortifications cheaper to repair and maintain, which means you will find yourself with more money as you progress. You may find that you simply have a cash excess that you would like to sink into more barriers and decoys. For example, with barriers, repair becomes cheaper at each even level:

  • Level 2 - Spike Barrier Repair Cost 8% Less - Level 1 Decoy Unlocked
  • Level 4 - Razor Wire Repair Cost 8% Less - Level 1 Turret Unlocked.
  • Level 6 - Electrified Barrier Repair Cost 8% Less Level 8 - Laser
  • Barrier Repair Cost 8% Less

What determines if an enemy is killed or downed in Gears of War 3?

Question

I've noticed sometimes when I purposely shoot an enemy in the leg in bursts I kill them. Other times, I down them.

I thought the main reason to shoot an enemy in the leg is to slow them down and to down them so an execution can be performed. I've noticed this is not the case and appears to be random.

Does the game randomly decide whether or not to down an enemy no matter where you shoot? Apart from when the enemy is shot in the head.

Answer

An enemy should only ever get downed from normal fire from guns like the lancer etc. Killing someone immediately by shooting them in the legs with a lancer should never happen.

An enemy will be killed if:

  • Hit by a head shot from a; Longshot, Boltock Pistol, Gnasher shotgun.

  • Directly hit by a; torque bow, boom shot, frag grenade, incendiary grenade, one shot, sawn off shotgun, mortar, charged bayonet from the retro lancer, chainsaw from the lancer, digger.

  • An enemy has already been downed twice, the third time they are dead.

  • You are shot when you are down.

Gears Of War 3 Beta Rewards

Question

I heard that their are some achievments and challenges within the Gears of War 3 beta, could someone tell me what they are and what they require? Thanks

Answer

It looks like there are unlockables like weapons and medals. I don't see achievements. The link above has a list of all the unlockables. Unlockables will carry over to the release version.

Am I able to complete Horde mode as a single player?

Question

I have been playing Horde mode in private matches with two players and it has been really, really tough going. I just wondered, is it possible to complete Horde mode (all 50 waves) with just one person?

Answer

At least for me, the answer is definitely no. The game throws way too many enemies at you for you to be able to have success on your own. I can't imagine surviving the first boss wave (wave 10) on my own, when it throws multiple Reavers, Berserkers, or a Bromak (sp) at you.

It would be cool if they made a version that could be played by yourself, but as it stands today you need a group to hope to complete all 50 waves.

How do you spot enemies in Gears of War 3?

Question

I've noticed during multiplayer matches that enemies can be spotted, which makes a mark appears above them in the display. I've found this really useful for targeting and tracking enemies because the mark appears for a few seconds, even when they go behind cover.

However, I can't work out how to do it. How do you spot enemies in Gears of War 3?

Answer

While looking at an enemy, hold down the left trigger button (as if to aim your weapon) and click down the left stick. Your character should then say something along the lines of "enemy spotted" and a symbol will appear over the enemy's head.

Hope that helps.

What are the active reload effects on GOW3 weapons?

Question

What are the effects of active reloading weapons?

Extra damage, extra range or both? Are the effects the same for every weapon?

Answer

Active reloading allows you to reload the gun faster than normal. This is achieved by tapping to reload and the tapping reload again when the reload tracker is anywhere within a grey bar highlighted on the reload gauge.

A "perfect" active reload is achieved when you tap the reload button within a much narrower white bar on the reload gauge. This fills the empty rounds in your click with special shots, indicated by flashing ammo symbols (for guns with bullets). The damage per shot is also increased by around 8%. (Except for the Scorcher).

These special shots have differing effects for some guns (paraphrased from above link):

  • Hammerburst II - Gets only 15 rounds in its magazine instead of the usual 17.
  • Boltok - Rate of fire increase.
  • Torque Bows - Charge up faster.
  • Boomshot - Receives an aftershock of mini explosions.
  • Scorcher - Receives a range increase.

As wilerson noted in the comments, if you click reload anywhere outside of the white or grey bar, before the reload is complete, then you achieve a "failed" reload. This confers no bonuses and increases the time it takes to reload the gun, such that it would have been faster to do nothing after starting the reload.

To summarise: Any active reload will cut down reload times. A perfect reload will grant bonus damage and some extra effects depending on the type of gun. A failed reload will increase reload times.
