Stimulus Pack is gone from MW2?

Question

I was considering buying the Stimulus map pack the other day, but then I noticed that you no longer have the option to go into a Stimulus game anymore from the menu. Would that change if I had Stimulus or can I not play it outside of private matches anymore?

Thanks.

Asked by Mechko

Answer

The Stimulus Pack maps are now included in the regular playlists: so if you choose the Demolition playlist for example, there's a pseudo-random chance that you will play a map from the Stimulus Package. To be sure, you can play these maps outside of private matches, but you have to rely on the luck of the draw.

You are correct in thinking there are no longer dedicated Stimulus Package playlists. These have been replaced by playlists for the Resurgence Pack.

Modern Warfare 2 - Is the Network down?

Question

I know Modern Warfare 2 is really outdatet especially since MW3 was released. But some weeks ago I wanted to play MW2 multiplayer just for retro feeling reasons. Then I saw "0 players currently playing".

Could it possibly be that Infinityward has shut down the Modern Warfare 2 network for playing in lobbies?

I know there are alternatives like IW4play (since alterIWnet is down 'cause of IW)

Asked by thonixx

Answer

There is some bug with MW2 so the amount of players in game always shows up as 0/0.

If you try to enter a game you should still get in. There is no way of knowing if there is actually anyone in a certain game type so I'd recommend Free-for-all or Team Deathmatch to ensure you get into a game.

Modern Warfare 2 Hacked servers - is it a security risk?

Question

I noticed that after playing on a hacked server in MW2, I had a ping counter for the rest of my session. This made me a little curious about how the hacks worked, since it would seem that the hacked server in fact injected some code into my game. If that's true, then I am wondering if the hacked servers could in fact exploit the game code to run attacks on my machine. Finally, if that were the case, I would be extremely curious as to what security measures I could take to prevent maliciousness against me. Finally, are the hacks executed on the network level or the software level or both?

Precis:

  1. Do the hacks inject code or otherwise insert compromise into my game?
  2. if so, is that compromise in any way dangerous?
  3. if so, is there anything that I can do about it?

    • and how do they work? (vaguely, out of curiosity)

EDIT: I want to be clear: I'm not asking about security risks if I install the hack. I'm asking about the security risk if I join a game and the server is hacked.

Asked by Mechko

Answer

Modern Warfare 2 (in fact all the Infinity Ward / Treyarch COD games) are based on a heavily modernised variant of the Quake 3 engine.

This means that the server (and other clients connected to it) can send config data files to your machine and pass on weird settings.

There was an exploit some dude did on a hacked X360 version of the 1st Modern Warfare whereby he created a a "viral" config that had low gravity, extra weapon damage for certain weapons etc. that would pass from console to console.

AFAIK these transferred config settings are transient and will go when you close the game, but it is entirely possible that they could persist on the PC version.

Also, since this is all accomplisghed just by sending data about it's pretty unlikely (but not impossible) that a hacked server would use this to inject executable code into your PC.

Why Do MW2 Maps Keep Crashing?

Question

So I am level 59 in MW2 multiplayer, and am planning on getting MW3 in the near future. I want to be able to prestige before then so I can get the bonuses listed in this answer. But whenever I play on any maps other than Highrise, Querry, and Afghan, My xbox crashes and says

The disk you have entered is unreadable.
Please try wiping it with a cloth or cleaning it.

My disk is scratched, but I am afraid of fixing it because all of the reviews I have seen of people do this have been good like:This saved me $60!!!!!, to You suck!!!!!!!!!! You ruined my disc Obvisously it will take me forever to prestige if I can only play on 3 maps. Is there anyway around this? Also is there any ways to fix it for free that you have used and work?
Thanks in Advance

Asked by Outlaw Lemur

Answer

Most nearby video stores ( now commonly Family Video or GameStop ) will do disc repairs but it depends how deep the scratches really are.

I would assume most replies of You Suck! You ruined my disc are that in actuality, a customer unable to come to the terms that their disc has become unrepairable prior to trying to clean it (and now has to bite the bullet of buying a new one or moving on).

I would try a local video rental store or GameStop (if applicable). Ultimately, if these options fail, buy a new disc or moving on to (in your case) Modern Warfare 3. I do not think it is worth it to buy a disc cleaning kit if you have already tried the first option. At some point your recovery efforts may become more expensive then purchasing a new, unscratched game.

Is it possible to kill yourself with a throwing knife in Modern Warfare 2?

Question

So I noticed if I throw the throwing knife almost straight up, then it lands somewhere nearby. I tried really hard to throw it up and then run ahead and have it land on me and kill me. Is this possible, or will it not kill me? If it is possible, is there a video of it somewhere?

Asked by Mechko

Answer

Various YouTube videos suggest not. (1) (2)

I think if it were video evidence would be easy to find.

Modern Warfare 2 Ping counter

Question

I heard about a Modern Warfare 2 ping stat like thingy which you can apparently tweak from the options menu, but I can't find it. Does anyone know where/what it is? The tool is supposed to display all the players' pings in much greater detail than the current 4-bar counter.

Asked by Mechko

Answer

In C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\call of duty modern warfare 2\players there is a file called config_mp.cfg. Open it with Notepad/Wordpad. There are two values you must tweak, namely cg_ScoresPing_Interval and cg_ScoresPing_MaxBars. You have some discretion with the former; the latter should be set to 10. I use the following:

seta cg_ScoresPing_Interval "30"
seta cg_ScoresPing_MaxBars "10"

This is how it works. Where the number of bars shown is >1, the ping lies in the following range:

(maxbars-shownbars)*interval to (maxbars-shownbars+1)*interval-1

For an interval of 30, this means:

  • One bar: >270 ms
  • Five bars: 150-179 ms
  • Nine bars: 30-59 ms
  • Ten bars: 0-29 ms

Knowing this, you may want to assign cg_ScoresPing_Interval a lower value.

There are also tools available that purportedly unlock the hidden developer console, with which you can enable a numeric ping display. Personally I wouldn't trust programs of this nature because of the small risk that they may be malicious or result in a VAC ban. With that said, you can read about one here.

Why do skilled players in MW2 use weapons unlocked early on, instead of the later ones?

Question

I noticed that in MW2, the more skilled players (who are usually the mvp in team deathmatch, First in FFA and so on), use weapons that are unlocked early on, instead of the weapons unlocked later in the game.

example: They use MP5 instead of Uzi and intervention instead of EBR.

Also, i noticed in terms of specs (damage, fire rate and so on), some of the earlier weapons have better specs than the later ones.

So why do they choose these weapons?

Answer

In the Call of Duty series, there isn't a ton of focus on balance between weapons in the same class. Just because a weapon is unlocked later doesn't mean that it is any better than any other weapon in that class.

There are almost always a few clear winners in the weapon lineup in every Call of Duty game, and those tend to be used the most often by the "serious" or "pro" players.

There's also frequently a couple of different types of weapons in a given class. For instance, some people prefer single shot or 3-shot burst AR's, of which there are relatively few. You might use the M16 over the AK-47 if you prefer 3-shot burst, for instance. Similarly, some shotguns are pump action and others are semi-automatic or fully automatic, and some sniper rifles are bolt action and others are semi-automatic, etc.

Also, sometimes you get the 'feel' for a weapon and you prefer it, even if its stats aren't the best, or other weapons unlock. You may choose an earlier weapon because you've unlocked an attachment you like, or are trying to get a particular challenge or kill count with it.

Does running MW2 means you can run MW3?

Question

I read somewhere that MW2 and MW3 share the same core. But the system requirements are a bit different. Does this means that if I can run very smoothly MW2, I can run smoothly MW3 on the same computer?

For example, my Pentium 4 3.2 ghz, 3GB ram, with ATI HD 2400 PRO 512MB runs very smoothly MW2, does this means I'll run smoothly MW3?

Answer

MW3 has a couple more tricks up the sleeve to look handsome, but, yes, in principle, you should be able to run MW3 as smooth as you can run MW2.

You just might have to turn down a few settings, but the overall experience will most probably stay the same.

Modern Warfare 2: Pistol run distance

Question

Does holding a pistol make you run further (or faster) than your primary weapon?

Answer

I wasn't able to find an 'official answer' but there were a number of sources that said only the primary affects your speed.

From this site

On movement speed (player speed is determined by the weapon in his primary slot): SMGs and Sniper Rifles have a Speed of 100% Assault Rifles have a Speed of 95% Machineguns have a Speed of 87.5% Riot Shield has a Speed of 80% A player can pick up another weapon and keep the movement speed of the weapon he spawned with.

From game FAQs

Only primaries affect running speed so pistols don't count. Also, it goes like this: SMG's/Snipers > AR's > LMG's > Riot shield

On a semi related note: Lightweight will multiply the player's movement speed by 1.1x ( 8% to 10% increase depending on the weapon).

Are there different servers for different platforms for Modern Warfare games?

Question

Is it possible that I'm playing against players on the PS3, Xbox and the Mac in a single game?

Or does each platform have their own servers and games?

Answer

No, each platform has its own servers. You are always playing against players on the same platform. The matchmaking systems are all separated and they don't communicate at all.

The Xbox and PS3 both have proprietary online systems (Live and PSN, respectively) that are generally walled off from each other for most games, including all the Call of Duty games.

In particular, the PC players using a mouse and keyboard tend to destroy console players - this has been a reason why they have been separated in other games. One developer talked about the differences that they had to make when porting their game to PC over on Penny Arcade.

It's possible that Mac and PC gamers could use the same servers; I don't know how likely this is.

Prestige Transfer after starting MW3

Question

I realise that I can get prestige tokens in MW3 for having previously prestiged in MW2/BlackOps, but after playing MW3 for a while can I now go back to the earlier games and prestige in them again to get more prestige tokens?

Answer

You don't get prestige tokens for each prestige rank you have. You get a prestige token from having gone prestige in a previous game (so 2nd prestige in MW2 buys you no more prestige tokens then 10th prestige).

However, if you haven't gone prestige in a previous game (Modern Warfare, MW2, World at War, or Black ops), you can go back and prestige to gain an additional token.

Hope this helps!

How to get bullet penetration kills in MW2?

Question

What do you have to do to get a bullet penetration kill in MW2? I've been stuck trying to complete the extended mags challenges because I'm not getting the penetration kills required.

Answer

Attach FMJ to the weapon you are trying to complete the challenge with. Then follow an enemy with your fire as they run for cover. Or otherwise try to get them behind cover once they are hiding. Often, you can easily spot someone behind a window or a wall when the barrel of their weapon is sticking out. Easiest to shoot through is sheet metal like the most walls on Scrapyard.

What's the plot of MW2?

Question

I'm probably one of the few people who never got to play Modern Warfare 2, but I did play Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. Now I bought MW3, but I'm worried I might be a little lost on the story. So I'd just like to know the basics of the MW2 plot before diving into MW3, no extensive answer necessary.

Assuming I remember the ending of MW1 (and my memory doesn't fail me), what big events moved the plot in MW2? I just want to catch up on the story I missed, please don't say anything about the story of MW3.

In order words: spoil MW2 (but not 3) for me.

Answer

Major Nelson posted a video on Twitter last week, that gives a high level overview of the plot of previous two Modern Warfare games. That should get you up to speed on the events prior to Modern Warfare 3.

Prestige transferring from Modern Warfare 1 & 2?

Question

One of my friends told me that you get special unlocks in Modern Warfare 3 if you went prestige in the first two.

Is this true? If so what sort of unlocks are we talking about?

Answer

Modern Warfare 3 features the Prestige Shop. Prestige you've performed in a previous Call of Duty games (MW1, World at War, MW2, Black Ops) earns you a single prestige token per game.

Prestige tokens can be spent in the shop to unlock things like an additional custom classes, special emblems and titles, and numerous other features.

Full list (from here):

  • Extra custom class (up to 5 extra classes for a total of 10 max)
  • Double XP (2 hours in-game time)
  • Double weapon XP (2 hours in-game time)
  • Regular Package (Callsign Title and Emblem available to those with an extra token lying around)[2]
  • Unlock Gear (can be weapons, equipment, perks)(Available at 1st Prestige)
  • Hardened Package (Callsign Titles and Emblems)
  • Veteran Package (Callsign Titles and Emblems, unlocked after 10th Prestige)

Modern Warfare 2 multiplayer accuracy stats hacked

Question

How did my online accuracy stats get hacked (reads negative percentage)?

It seems it's the only stat to get hacked over KDR and Wins, etc.

Not a big deal, I have 1.4 million misses so I'm not very accurate anyway (extended mag on RPD doesn't help).

Answer

The Modern Warfare 2 leader boards are notorious for being hacked. Also, IW has offered little support for trying to resolve the issue and verified that it is tedious process to try to clean up the leader boards.

Your best bet is to just wait for the release of MW3.

Why was Captain Price in prison in Modern Warfare 2?

Question

I think I missed something somewhere. In Modern Warfare 2, you have to break Captain Price out of a high security prison in a fortress by the sea. Why was he in prison and when was this explained?

Answer

In the concluding fight off Modern Warfare 1 (the one on the bridge), it is implied that Price is killed (he gets shot a few times). However, it turns out that he was only captured (although you don't see him being captured as you're too busy doing you thing).

Fastest way to level up in Modern Warfare 2 / Black Ops

Question

What is the quickest way that you have found to level up in MW2?

EDIT: I've been playing a lot of Hardcore CTF lately with friends... this has been getting me a lot of XP... we would just hold the flag and play for a draw the first 2 rounds and cap in the 3rd round if possible...

i'd say 8k up to 25k xp per round..

CTF XP

Answer

I would say avoid big games especially Ground War. It seems it's easier to get kills because there's more people but in fact it's a lot harder to get high kill streak because of bigger chance of getting killed.

Do learn the maps as fast as you can so you can easily pick good spots and avoid those from where you can get killed from easily. Watch killcams for that (as was suggested in the answer to another question).

Unlock challenges for the same gun to get optimal performance out of it. Almost every gun (at least from assault rifles) can be configured to be effective.

Lastly, try to play stealth to avoid many deaths and therefore build higher streaks. Use silencer, Ninja and Cold Blooded for that.

Does your killstreak end when you get killed by friendly fire in hardcore?

Question

In Modern Warfare 2, does your kill streak end when you get killed by a team mate in hard-core, or only when you get killed by an enemy?

Answer

Regardless of the type of death, your killstreak will end (suicide, enemy kill, teamkill). However, this will not count as a death in the standings, nor will it affect team standings. It will just give the offending player -100 points (or whatever -1 kill is worth in points in that game). Hardcore is best suited if you all have headsets, since you won't know where everyone is, and so communication will cut down on "freakout kills" when two teammates turn the corner and react before they see it is a friendly.
