Does Master Chief return to Earth at the end of Halo 3?

Question

In legendary mode you can see the half of the UNSC ship moving towards a blue planet.

Is this Earth?

Do you know which planet Master Chief is moving towards?

Answer

From Halopedia:

The planetoid is littered with blue-glowing symbols and geometric patterns - clearly Forerunner in origin. At least two of the symbols are clearly recognizable. This could mean that the planet is the Forerunner homeworld.

A Marathon symbol can also be observed on the surface. It is known to be a common Forerunner symbol, used in multiple Forerunner constructs, and also used to refer to a Reclaimer.

Theories about what the planet could be:

Shield World

Given the Legendary planet's clearly artificial appearance, it could be one of the many Shield Worlds constructed by the Forerunners as safe havens to protect them from the Flood and the activation of the Halo Array.

One theory suggests that the common Forerunner symbol seen on the surface solely represents a Shield World, relying on the fact that the cover of Ghosts of Onyx bears this symbol and the book prominently features a Forerunner Shield World, which leads to some believing that the planet is the planet that Catherine Elizabeth Halsey, Franklin Mendez, Blue Team and the remaining SPARTAN-IIIs and SPARTAN-IIs were transported to. However, the common symbol on the cover may simply reference to the fact that the story of the novel puts strong emphasis to the Forerunners. Furthermore, if the symbol only represented a Shield World, its common appearances on the Halo installations and the Ark would be unexplained. Also, all Shield Worlds seen so far are disguised as natural planets, whereas the Legendary Planet bears clear evidence of artificial Forerunner construction.

Forerunner colony

Yet another theory is that it could be an abandoned Forerunner colony or planetoid-class ship, similar to High Charity. Throughout the Halo franchise, there have been a few mentions of the Forerunner colonies prior to the discovery and subsequent war with the Flood, notably in the Halo 3 Terminals. This theory provides an alternative to the Shield World theory, as well as explaining the planetoid, the Forerunner symbols, and providing an opening for sequels; however, if the Forerunners had indeed been living on this planet-like object, they would have been killed when the Halo array was fired (unless, like the Ark, the planet is not located in the Milky Way Galaxy, placing it outside of the effective range of the Halo Array).

Another point supporting the theory is that there appear to be cities on the surface.

Reading the Terminals, an interesting phrase appears on Legendary, that Mendicant Bias, a Forerunner AI who defected to the Gravemind and was later defeated by Offensive Bias, says directly to Chief, stating:

"Atonement.
And so here at the end of my life, I do once again betray a former master. The path ahead is fraught with peril. But I will do all I can to keep it stable - keep you safe. I'm not so foolish to think this will absolve me of my sins. One life hardly balances billions.
But I would have my masters know that I have changed.
And you shall be my example." - Mendicant Bias

The last line has caused fans to believe that Mendicant Bias had an intention of showing the Forerunners an example of his "atonement" who is the Master Chief. Knowing this many believe that the AI protected the Master Chief, and prevented a number of unseen events on the Ark and Installation 04B from affecting the Chief and his missions. Some have also theorized that he deviated the portal's course at the last moment before he was destroyed. Though no information supports this and it has been neither stated nor implied, it can be supported logically in that the Ark's Portal might have several possible entrance/exit points throughout space; the Forerunners adapted to the Flood with extensive redundancy in all systems and escape mechanisms, so it is possible that the Forerunners on the Ark established themselves at a different Portal destination, possibly one of many, and Mendicant Bias shifted to this destination when the Forward Unto Dawn was halfway through, thus severing the ship and dropping the Master Chief's half near the colony.

Forerunner homeworld

Another possible identity is that the planet is the Forerunner homeworld, since the Forerunners would doubtlessly have wanted one of their ships to get to the homeworld safely if something similar happened to a Forerunner vessel as did Cortana and the Chief.

It strongly suggested in the Halo Legends episode "Origins" that the Unidentified Forerunner Planet, a Forerunner colony, is indeed the Legendary Planet. Hints include what looks like the Forward Unto Dawn drifting towards the planet, and Installation 00 orbiting a rocky, brown moon, which in turn is orbiting the planet in question.

How much is the reward for Stag Party?

Question

At the end of the mission, you're given the option to either turn Josh Birk in to Cyrus to get a bonus to City Takeovers, or you can give him to Shaundi to turn him into a Homie. Cyrus mentioned that they'd put pressure on Morningstar instead of the Saints, so I assume the bonus is within their territory.

I decided to make Josh my Homie, but I was wondering how much the bonus was for the City Takeover? What area of the city is it in? It it always the same area every time, or will it change based on whether you've taken over that area of the city or not?

I've taken over a fair bit of Morningstar territory, which is partially why I didn't go for this reward. I didn't want it to go to waste if it gave me areas which I'd already taken over.

Answer

Choosing to give Josh over to Cyrus results in you receiving a "City Takeover" bonus, separate from the City Takeover upgrade. Choosing this bonus will not lock out the regular City Takeover upgrade.

Using this bonus allows you to take control of one large area of the city of your choice. This area is outlined by a bold purple line, includes more than just a single Diversion/Property, and is named, like Loren Square or Sunset Park (basically, the neighborhood division lines).

It does not have to be within Morningstar territory. Taking control of the area will automatically complete all Diversions in the area, as well as automatically give you all properties in the area.

If I choose to take Killbane's mask, am I completely locked out of the Apoca-fists?

Question

At the end of the Murderbrawl XXXI mission, you can either choose to take Killbane's mask, which allows you to acquire his mask to wear, or he will tell you the "secret of the Apoca-fists."

If I choose to take his mask, does this completely lock me out of the Apoca-fists on that save? Or will I get the option to purchase them later on?

Answer

As far as I've been able to determine, and according to this wiki entry, the only way to get them is either by letting Killbane keep his mask or by using a cheat code.

Elder Knowledge quest glitch?

Question

I just finished talking to the P-something dragon on the Throat of the World and he sent me to find out the location of the Elder Scroll. So I went to the University and tried talking to the orc in the library. But the only thing he says is "Do you think Ancano knew all along what the Eye was capable of?" - when I press E, no dialog shows up, he just repeats this line over and over.

I have the University's Staff of Magnus quest active, but I can't manage to finish it, I'm level 11 mage and the skeletal dragon instagibs me. So I got on the main storyline, but now this...

No, he doesn't get up and unlock or give me any books, he just sits there on the little chair doing nothing :/

Answer

Did he ever stand up at some point and do something? When I talked to him, he eventually agreed to help me and went off for a second. When he came back he put some books on the counter - you need to read those books.

How can I talk to Odahviing again?

Question

I have trapped Odahviing in Dragonsreach, and it seems that I must free him so that I can ride him to the next dungeon.

The problem is, every time I free him, everyone else in the room starts attacking him. Since the Jarl (who is invincible) is in the room, and the dragon itself is invincible, this enters a neverending cycle of one of the two of them dying, crouching for a moment to recover, and resuming battle. I can't talk to Odahviing while he is fighting.

What am I supposed to do?

Answer

I couldn't wait in the room with Odahviing because of "nearby enemies", so in my attempt to make the Jarl leave, I went to another zone, waited there, and returned. Afterwards, I was able to wait in the room with Odahviing. This also resulted in not everyone immediately attacking him once he was free, which solved my problem.

I think it must have been a glitch that never cleared Odahviing as an enemy when he was captured. If this happens for anyone else, try zoning back and forth to see if it is solved.

How do I find the easter egg characters in Gemini Rue?

Question

I found Ed from Cowboy Bebop on my first playthrough, but I don't know what actions triggered the event. How can I get the rest of easter egg characters? And also do I have to find them in the same playthrough to get the Steam achievement?

Answer

I found them all, they are the main characters from Cowboy Bebop:

  • Spike: When you get into Matthius apartment, after the Boryokudan members leave and before checking the terminal return to the first screen.

  • Jet: When you can change between characters, go to Hibiscus Highrise and he is in the second to last level of stairs.

  • Faye: After curing Paul Erickson, return to the burned down hideout where you obtained the Carbon Ray Stabilizer.

  • Ed/Ein: As soon as you can get in the appartment building where Paul Erickson lives, go to the top floor and you will find Ed next to the window.

And you need to find them in the same playthrough to get the achievement.

And... bonus!

How do I achieve “Smash TV”?

Question

Which eleven monitors do I have to break to obtain the Smash TV achievement?

Portal 2: "Smash TV" achievement badge

I'm assuming it's the monitors that appear throughout Chapter 8?

But, having just run through Chapter 8 and trying to get this, I've just counted 14 monitors (and only managed to break 8 of them so far).

Have I miscounted?
Are some irrelevant? (maybe the first 3 in the "easy" rooms?)

Can you please use >! spoiler markup if you're going to explain how to break them; for now I'd just like to know which to break.

Answer

Right, I've hit the achievement, and here's the info:

I've now counted 16 monitors in Chapter 8, but you can ignore the first 5, so you need to break all the monitors from the one found in the test chamber numbered 1/19, up to the start of Chapter 9.

Instruction for breaking each monitor:

Chamber 1

Move the cube to the lower section of the level. Use a ceiling-floor loop to get the cube to high speed then fling it from the opposite wall to the monitor.

Chamber 2

Move a cube to the ceiling using the vertical funnel position that forms the normal solve of the level and drop the funnel to fling the cube at the monitor from the wall in front of it.

Chamber 3

Another cube fling, either using a ceiling-floor loop or funnel to get the cube up to speed for the fling.

Chamber 4

You need to sneak round to behind the turret (I managed to run to the wall next to it before it could kill me, wait and then run again) and carry the turret towards the monitor. As long as you do this with the turret being "OK" (ie, don't let it shut-down) then it will target and shoot the monitor for you. You might have to put it down (as long as it lands correctly).

Chamber 5 (has 2 monitors)

The closest monitor is broken by flinging a cube from the opposite wall using a vertical funnel in the centre. Place the launching portal directly under where the funnel hits the wall to ensure you're on target.
The second monitor only appears when you reach the exit door, and is broken by the same method but by flinging the cube from the far-right space on the angled launch pad opposite.

Chamber 6

Just step on the aerial faith plate to launch yourself at the monitor.

Chamber 11

Once you've set up your laser (for completing the level) instead place the exit portal on the wall facing the monitor near the target point for the laser. Then maybe tweak the angle of the laser with the box to point it at the monitor for a few seconds.

Chamber 12

When you're setting up the laser to aim at it's target, just point it right a bit (at the monitor) for a few seconds.

Chamber 15

I did this with a double-fling of myself. Set a on the opposite wall and one of the floor below it, step in to the one on the floor then fall in to the one on the floor again - this second fall should give you the speed to fling across for the break.

Chamber 16

This one was quite difficult, but basically you have to get hold of a turret and get that to shoot the monitor (as per chamber 4).
First, I used blue gel to remove two of the turrets (instead of all three as you would to solve the chamber). Then I carefully placed a portal on only half of where the funnel is hitting the wall and linked it to one on the floor - this means the funnel doesn't "pass through" the portal, so you can effectively sit on that wall. From here you can shoot the other portal in to the wall above the turrets, then reposition the portal that's misaligned on the funnel's wall to let the funnel through. Then you can ride the funnel and drop down on top of the turret.

Why is there a helicopter flying over Arkham City?

Question

There is a helicopter flying over Arkham City. What is the purpose of it?

It is also possible to grapple on it. Will I ever need this helicopter in my missions in the game?

Answer

The Tyger helicopters are there for Tyger to keep control of the city.

When Protocol 10 is enacted, their purpose will be clear. Batman will have to hang onto the correct one to get a MacGuffin to advance the plot.

Is it possible to fail Cold Call Killer?

Question

I'm getting pretty close to being able to trace the call for the sidequest Cold Call Killer. However, I was wondering if it was possible to fail the trace? It seems like there is ample opportunity to miss tracing the call, especially if you don't move your cursor. I found out that you get a game over and have to retry if you miss getting to one of the ringing phones.

What happens when you fail to trace the call? Will the entire sidequest fail, or will you get another chance to trace it?

Answer

Alright, finally tried it: if you don't get enough progress on the trace, you will trigger a game over. You'll have to restart from Zsasz sending you running for the payphone, in much the same way as if you don't pick up the second payphone before it stops ringing.

Is Cave Johnson Chell's Father?

Question

About around the time of the Portal 2 Announcement ARG, to the best of my knowledge it had become well established that Cave Johnson was Chell's father (with the latter being abducted by GLaDOS on Bring your Daughter to Work Day).

However, many months later, with the release of Portal 2, all such references seem to have disappeared, and I can no longer find any proof of (what I thought) was well-established fact. Can anyone provide any canonical evidence that Chell is Cave Johnson's Daughter?

Specifically, I am wondering if, during the course of the two pre-release ARGs for Portal 2 (one for the announcement, the other just before launch) Cave was officially credited anywhere with specifically being Chell's father.

P.S. Please do not bring discussions of Caroline into this question, as I am chiefly concerned with information from the ARGs, and not Portal 2.

Answer

Preface

This could be considered too localized. At this point, there's no official 'canon' answer.

Short Answer

As of Portal 2, speculation tends to lean in the direction of Cave being Chell's father.

Long Answer

From the Combine OverWiki article on Chell:

Players exploring the Aperture facility in Portal 2 can discover a presentation from the Bring Your Daughter to Work Day science fair signed with the name Chell. Several girls seem to have made potato batteries; none of them have rotted over the years, but Chell's potato has actually grown out of control, sprouting through the ceiling. One of the steps described in her experimental procedure is using a "special ingredient from Daddy's work." This strongly implies that Chell was the daughter of a male Aperture employee, was trapped in the facility during GLaDOS' takeover on Bring Your Daughter to Work Day, and spent her entire adolescence as one of GLaDOS' prisoners.

Virtually no other reliable direct evidence about Chell's background appears in the games, although players have speculated based on vague hints. In the Lab Rat comic, Chell's surname is redacted on the list of test subjects, while no other information is missing; this may indicate some sort of secret concerning her family background. However, the possibility that there is no in-story explanation for the missing name and Valve simply did not want to give Chell a canonical surname yet cannot be dismissed.

GLaDOS often drops hints about Chell's background, but since her comments are obviously intended to manipulate Chell or damage her self-esteem, they may not have any basis in fact. In the first game, GLaDOS said that she possessed a backup of Chell's brain, which she later claimed to have deleted in a fit of rage. Although the comment may have been a complete fabrication, some players speculated that Chell might be a clone (although the game's writers have now confirmed that this theory was not intended) or an android. GLaDOS also asserts once in the first game and repeatedly in the second that Chell was abandoned by her birth parents and subsequently adopted. In context, GLaDOS' intent is clearly for Chell to find this information upsetting - even when fighting on Chell's side, she not only repeats the allegation but adds, "and that's horrible."

If we ignore the Caroline-based evidence, we must rely on the following:

  • Chell got help from "daddy" with her science project on "Take Your Daughter To Work Day" at Aperture Science.
  • Cave Johnson not only worked for Aperture Science, but owned it.

Outside of the above, most of the speculation on Chell's father comes from this series of connections (which, despite your initial request, require us to mention Caroline):

  • The song the turrets sing at the end of Portal 2 implies a familial connection between GLaDOS and Chell.
  • Portal 2 establishes very clearly that GLaDOS, at a minimum, has Caroline as part of her personality/intelligence.
  • Several voice-overs and a hidden portrait imply a familial connection between Caroline and Cave.

Adding all of these items together and you get the basis of the speculation about Chell's father.

How much are the bonuses for each choice at the end of Act 1?

Question

At the end of the raid on Loren's tower, you're given a choice to either set off the bomb or disarm the bomb.

For setting off the bomb, you get a permanent Respect bonus. For disarming the bomb, you get a permanent Cash bonus.

How much are each of these bonuses? Are they a one-time deal, like X amount of Respect/Cash at once, or are they an increased percentage of what you earn, like the perk you can buy that gives you 5% increased Respect earned?

Answer

You get either a 10% bonus to respect or cash earned at the end of each mission/activity.

What Does Hiring a Different Plumber Get Me?

Question

After completing Super Mario Galaxy with Mario, you gain the option to play through it again as his brother, Luigi. I've noticed some slight differences between the 2 plumbers, and have been wondering lately if I've got the whole story. What I've noticed so far is:

  • Luigi slides on his heels, as opposed to coming to an abrupt stop when the analog stick is released.
  • When doing a spin attack underwater, some of Luigi's air is drained per each spin, where Mario's is not.
  • Luigi gets 20 1-Ups from Princess Peach's letters, where Mario gets fewer.

Are there any more variations in gameplay between the 2 brothers? I'm looking for a complete list of variances.

Answer

Alright, I've done some further digging, and these are the differences I've found:

--Uses Air when spinning underwater

--Has less traction, so he slides and skids

--Jumps farther and higher; runs faster

--(perhaps related to the above) knocked back slightly farther when hit, which equates to a longer post-hit stun

--The cosmic Luigi challenge runs take advantage of Luigi's physics, which may mean separate routes than cosmic Mario

--In addition to the above, some galaxies have slightly altered levels, such as the "Luigi meets Luigi" star in Toytime Galaxy, which changes from the 8-bit Mario planet to the backside, which features an 8-bit Luigi (with the change in colors coming from a change in the platform "pixels")

-- Mario gets 1-ups from Princess Peach's letters, but Luigi gets 20 1-ups instead (It still says "Dear Mario" Poor guy can't catch a break)

Are there more Golden Temple levels?

Question

So last night I unlocked and completed level 9-1. So I now have all the K-O-N-G letters and all the puzzle pieces. I went to view the image gallery, since I have collected all the puzzle pieces, and I noticed that the "Golden Temple" gallery has a picture of level 9-1, and then lots of other levels I've never seen: a minecart level wrapping around a giant banana, a Super Paper Mario style level, and a Virtual Boy level, among others. Are these real levels that are unlocked by completing enough mirror mode or time trial levels? It seems weird that there would only be one level in world 9. I've checked the three FAQs on GameFAQs and none mention any levels beyond 9-1, but they all appear to be incomplete too.

Answer

No, there is only the one golden temple level. Completing mirror mode nets you a 200% completion, the remaining gallery unlocks, and bragging rights, but no additional golden temple levels.

How to kill Uldred on Dragon Age: Origins?

Question

I am in the mage tower now with Shale, Morrigan and Zevran and I am facing Uldred.

I am siding with the templars, because Morrigan said so, and I am having a really hard time beating Uldred.

I have been trying over 10 tries already, and it is starting to annoy me.

I do not have any healing spells and have some health potions left. I am a warrior human. Together with Shale, that makes two tanks.

Now I've read somewhere that you need to use that spell you get from the other mage to stop the abominations from appearing, or something. Have not tried that, but...

What would be the best course of action to beat this enemy?

Thanks

Answer

The trick to the fight is to use the litany every time he's going to convert a mage into an abomination.

I did that and the fight went fine - I don't remember it being particularly difficult.

If I remember correctly, Wynne shouts out each time you need to use the litany, so if you've killed her, this could be a bit trickier, but I think both Uldred and the mage glow white when he's about to convert them

How do you defeat the antagonist of the Eye of Magnus quest?

Question

I just completed the final (I think) main quest of the College of Winterhold and became the Arch-Mage, although I have no idea how I did it. Nothing I did seemed to be having any effect, either on the Eye of Magnus, or on Ancano. Eventually, Ancano simply keeled over and was dead.

I was shooting the staff all over the place, so I'm not sure which target had an effect and which completely ignored my attempts.

What is the intended way to claim victory in this battle?

Answer

You're supposed to close the eye with the staff, which makes Ancano vulnerable. Then you can kill him however you wish. I found the staff to be more than adequate for this.

Where is my house?

Question

I was given a house by Ulfric Stormcloak as a reward for my services to the rebellion. I remember the Jarl of Whiterun (after the capture) offered me a home, but I cannot find it. Does anyone know where this house is?

Answer

I think the Jarl offered you the possibility to buy some house. You must talk to its associate to get one.

Can someone give me a reference to a door in Morrowind?

Question

This has bothered me for years and it's time I got an answer.

Back when I used to play Morrowind I stumbled on a large stone door somewhere in the wild (mountainous/hilly region if I remember correctly). When I tried to enter it, it gave me a riddle or message and I was unable to get in.

What door was this? How did other players get in? What was beyond the door? Can someone link me a reference to it?

Answer

Was it this?

the eye of the needle lies in the teeth of the wind
the mouth of the cave lies in the skin of the pearl
the dream is the door and the star is the key

It is part of the main quest in Ashlands:

The eye of the needle refers to a tall rock column in the Valley of the Wind. The skin of the pearl refers to a pale rock on the very top of the column. The teeth of the wind refers to Airan's Teeth, two rock spires marking the entrance to the Valley of the Wind. The spires are named after a seer, Airan, who was blessed by Azura. The valley is on the northeast slope of Red Mountain in the center of the island. The mouth to the valley is just east and south of the Daedric Shrine of Zergonipal, which should now be marked on your world map. The last clue refers to the star which is actually Azura's Star that is only visible at dawn and dusk (6 to 8 am and pm).

What it boils down to is that a door at the base of the needle will be open only during the dawn and dusk hours. To reach it, start at Falasmaryon and head towards the Daedric Shrine of Zergonipal and just east of it you should find two parallel valleys leading towards the south. Take the one to the east, marked by two tall rock spires (Airan's Teeth). Walk all the way to the end of the valley, and wait for the correct time for the door to open.

A quicker and easier way to get there would be to start from Tel Vos and just hike over the mountains to the west. If you go directly west, you should wind up midway through the Valley of the Wind. Simply follow it south the rest of the way.

Does it matter whether Catwoman chooses to save Batman or not?

Question

I'm at what I assume is the end of the 3rd Catwoman mission. I've beaten down the guards, I have two suitcases full of loot, and I'm apparently having a moral dilemma regarding whether I should leave Batman buried under a pile of rubble or flee Arkham City with my ill-gotten gains.

Though she apparently doesn't have any affect on the main story, I'm not sure which I should choose in order to get the most out of the DLC.

Are the two options merely an illusion of choice and end up with you taking the same path, regardless of which you choose? More importantly, are there any achievements associated with either choice?

Answer

Actually, since we are talking spoiler, check this video to see what happens:

Basically everything is ruined, Joker becomes an immortal and takes the city. The game ends, with Barbara Gordon crying out loud over a radio line.

But, if you watch it to the end, the game will rewind to the point of the decision, and let you choose again. :)

How do I complete Bound Until Death without earning a bounty?

Question

I'm at the Bound Until Death quest for the Dark Brotherhood and want to do it with the bonus task (balcony kill).

It's not a problem to kill the bride, but I haven't find a place to do it from without getting a 1000 gold (sometimes +40) bounty instantly. Everytime the guards will chase me, even when I'm using an invisibility potion.
Of course I'm sneaking and kill her with one shot.

Places I tried:

  • other balcony where that bow is

  • on the castle wall, going through the church

  • from behind her ;-)

Is it possible to "stay in the dark"?

Oh, and do I have to worry about my argonian friend?

Answer

go into the temple, up the stairs to the right and out the door up there, youll end up on the level above the platform they thank people for coming to their wedding, and you can tip the gargoyle up there ontop of her to kill without a bounty

Edit - Forgot to add that whilst this doesnt add a bounty, the husband and inlaws go ape and try to kill you

Mass Effect 2: Is it possible to have a romance with all your possibilities in one game?

Question

Is it possible to romance all your options in a single game? i.e. if you are playing as a male, that would be Tali, Jack, Miranda, Kelly, Samara. I'm not including Morinth in this list, as if I recall, Morinth is a dead end (literally).

Has anyone ever done this?

Answer

Yes, with one major caveat: You can only "consummate" a single romantic interest before the Suicide Mission, though you can dead-end yourself (I.e., prevent further romance) with all of the characters before this.

To observe all romantic interactions within a single playthrough, simply play the game, as normal, until you complete the suicide mission. You can romance one of the available options during this part, but limit your social interactions to only this character (so you don't accidentally lock yourself out of the other relationships prematurely).

After you've beaten the main game, you can go back and start romancing the other love interests. (You may have to do missions / visit planets in between to progress along the dialog trees) Eventually, the new character will refuse to go any further until you break up with your current love interest. If you do so, you should be able to jump directly into the romance scene the next time you speak with them (this is the scene that normally plays just before the Suicide Mission). Add another notch on Sheperd's bedpost, and continue on with the third potential romance.

Do note, you can only be romantically involved with a single character at a time, but you can see all possible romance outcomes in a single playthrough (of a single gender, of course. Fem Shepperd will never be able to romance Tali or Miranda, for instance).

The Mass Effect Wiki has more information on Romance in general.
