How do I use the Undermounted Shotgun attachment for assault rifles?

Question

In call of duty: modern warfare 3 (PC version) when playing multiplayer. You can select at weapon level 20 the shotgun attachment for the assault rifle.

How do you fire it?
Does it happen automatically or do you need to use a hot-key ?

Asked by François

Answer

To use an undermounted weapon attachment (either a grenade launcher or a shotgun) you'll need to activate it - this is similar to switching weapons, although it's generally a bit faster than raising or lowering a secondary.

I believe this key can be configured, but by default it is 3. Once you've switched to the unermounted attachment, fire it just like you would any weapon.

How do you execute a strike package in mow 3 multiplayer?

Question

When playing multiplayer in COD: MoW3 on the PC you are able to select strike packages when creating a class. How do you execute them during multiplayer?

Asked by François

Answer

The "support" and "assault" strike packages will give you rewards depending on how you set up your loadout, and how well you're doing in the current match.

When you've earned a reward, you'll get a notification on your HUD, and pressing a key will activate it. This key is configurable, but by default I believe it is 4.

The "specialist" strike package grants additional perks as you get kills without dying, but this does not require any sort of activation.

Which is more effective, AirStrike or Predator?

Question

In Modern Warfare 3's survival mode, every time a juggernaut wave starts I get ready with a Predator missile. I find it very effective, just one Predator and the juggernaut is down.

But then, I must admit I am not a pro in MW3. In fact, I am just a n00b. My friend and I got to wave 33 in Underground and 39 in Seatown. I know one guy who is a pro - he and his friend survived till wave 124 in underground (and uploaded a video to Youtube as well, to show off). He says that to reach the higher waves I must know how to use the AirStrike.

I have tried using AirStrikes. I use them on enemies and they always survive so I don't get many kills. The same thing happens with Juggernauts.

Predator missiles can kill many enemies and give you total control over the missile. Both Airstrike and Predator cost the same ($2500).

So how is the Airstrike better than the Predator? One advantage I see is that you can use Airstrikes while running, but you can't move while using the Predator.

Asked by Rakesh Juyal

Answer

I'd personally use them for different scenarios and different points during a game of survival. It's also important to note that they have different uses depending on the map you're playing.

As you reference Seatown, I'll talk about that first. I tend to use the predator only on the earlier rounds (<30) due to the limitation you are aware of - the inability to move. Points are abundant on this map so it's easy to use a predator to wipe out the early juggernauts if you can get them to bunch up together. For juggernaut rounds >30 I prefer to use airstrikes solely because you can 'fire and forget'. Moving around the map is very important on Seatown in later waves, so this is an immense benefit.

The other good thing about the airstrike is that you can team it up with flashbangs to keep a group of enemies around the spot that the strike is called in. This obviously works best with a coordinated 2 player approach - one with flashes, one with airstrike.

But, on Underground the predator is extremely useful in all rounds (especially from 30+) to hit a group of enemies at their spawn point on the raised platform by where the two trains are parked just before the entrance to the building. (Use a predator to survey the battle field and you'll see where I mean, I'll try to post a link to a map later) Hitting the enemies here immediately after spawn allows you to get quad kill/kill streak/rampage quite easily and the predator effectively pays for itself. Again, I find points quite abundant on this map, so it's not as important to be conservative with them.

Remember, if you are hitting round 39 now, to improve you want to get to round 45 or 50 then build on that. There is no point dying with $50k that you could have spent on airstrikes, predators, riot squads, body armor etc. It's important to keep a reasonable amount back for self-revies, claymores, c4 and flashbangs - but otherwise you can spend more than you think.

For reference, I play on PS3 and currently sit around #500 for Underground (round 62). I think my Seatown best is round 51, but working on bettering that currently.

Maps used online VS places in campaign mode

Question

One big thing to do first in online mode is to well know the maps .

I know that I could walk and explore in them alone in a private match. But it's boring...

I began to play the campaign mode to learn the places where the game is.

I only played about the half of the first mission and I didn't recognize a map that I've play on-line.

Does the on-line and campaign mode places are related ?

If I continue to play in campaign mode, will it help me to know maps used on-line ?

Will I be able to recognize some spots that I have to be aware like windows of building ?

Asked by Luc M

Answer

No.

Maps in campaign are similar to ones in multiplayer, however, they are not even close to same. In multiplayer you want to know places where foes can hide and wait, snipping spots, choke points, alternative entrance points (both to building and areas) and so on. Most of them are specialy made for multiplayer mode.

Also, MW3 campain is very linear, which means that games itself leads you to next checkpoint. E.g. All side alley are somehow blocked, doors locked and so on. In multiplayer you don't want that. You want map where you can flank opposite team. You want safe house which has three and not one entrance and so on.

All in all, the best way to learn map is to play it online. Just walking around map won't teach you anything. For example, by just walking around the map in private match you could learn that on spot X is a box, but only in real battle (multiplayer) you will learn that that box is famous spot for shotgun camper.

Will Spec-Ops mode spoil my single player experience?

Question

I got MW3 but haven't got around to start the single player campaign yet. A friend of mine asked me to play with him the Spec-Ops mode.

Will playing the Spec-Ops mode before completing the single player mode spoil the single player story/settings or is it completely independent?

Asked by JohnoBoy

Answer

I would say that the answer to this depends on how sensitive you are to spoilers. As has been noted, the survival mode is just the multiplayer maps with infinite waves of increasingly difficult enemy forces. There's no plot- or single-player-related spoilers to be had there.

The mission mode draws its maps directly from the single player campaign, but the stories told are all tangential to or from a different perspective from the missions in the single player campaign. In some, the objectives tie directly into story elements, but are provided to you without any context.

Someone will shout "Kidnap X!" or "Save Y!" and then you've got to go and do that thing, but there's no plot context for the mission given in the mission - the story that ties it all together is presented in the single player campaign. At the end of the mission you might know that someone is kidnapped or lived through a kidnapping, but you won't know why that's important or how it ties into the rest of the story.

If you're feeling particularly sensitive, I'd avoid the following missions prior to playing the related single-player campaign mission:

  • Milehigh Jack
  • Hostage Taker
  • Toxic Paradise

All three of these directly relate to plot elements in the campaign, although they are told from different perspectives.

The rest (IMHO) are less plot related and more just rehashes of single player maps with different objectives. My recommendation is to play the co-op with your friend, regardless of whether you've finished the campaign - it's the most fun mode in the game, especially if you've got a good co-op team. However, if you're super sensitive to spoilers, your best bet is to play single player first.

How to play a multiplayer team death match in MW3 indefinitely? (no scoring)

Question

I do not know if this is possible but I think the online team death match is too fast? The game ends every 10-20 mins when the score is reached. Is there a way or a mode that let's you play indefinitely without scoring or at least to join a game with extremely high score goals? Currently I have no choice and I am automatically joined in a random game. This is PS3 btw.

Asked by IMB

Answer

In private matches, you can customize the rules of the game and change things such as the time limit and score limit. However, you must then invite friends to play with you. Private matches are just that - private, and only open to the people you invite.

If you're looking to play a game against random people on the internet, you are limited to the playlists that are available within the game. None of the available multiplayer game modes are time-based in Modern Warfare 3.

That said, Team Deathmatch games tend to play pretty quickly, but if you just want to be playing and getting kills, you might try an "objective" game type.

For instance:

  • Search and Destroy tends to take longer and does not have a kill limit. The objective is to get a bomb to a bomb site, which many people ignore in favor of just killing each other.
  • Kill Confirmed requires that you pick up tags in order to get credit for a kill, so there are typically more kills per round than in other "kill enemies to win" modes.
  • Drop Zone also focuses more on holding a position and playing with killstreak rewards than on a specific number of kills.
  • Ground War mixes several game types and has a higher score limit, so more kills are required to win, although there are typically more players.

What is the easiest way to drop shot on MW3?

Question

So ive seen people do these "drop shots" and ive started to learn to do them but not amazing at them yet i can still go 50kills to 5-6 deaths without but would prevent so many deaths if i could drop shot whats the easiest way to do this? And how do you do a good "drop shot" to win in 1 v 1 situations?

Asked by Cem22lp

Answer

To perform a "Drop Shot" (going prone immediately after you encounter another player) you just have to hold the crouch/prone button as you start to fire. The tricky part is doing this while keeping control of the other aspects of the game.

On the console, most "drop shotters" swear by the tactical controller layout, which puts the "crouch" button on your right stick button, but you'll have to be careful not to move your thumb as you click it, otherwise your aim will be off. You might want to take a look at alternative controllers, some of which put buttons where you can reach them with other fingers.

With a PC, you can rebind your keys so that you can access the buttons for "Aim Down Sights," "Fire Weapon," "Movement," and "Prone" simultaneously. If you're using WASD for movement, you're probably using three buttons on your left hand for that, so you've got your pinky and thumb on the left hand you could rebind. On your right hand, you might try using a mouse that gives you one or more thumb buttons to use.

Note that also going prone means that you can't track left/right as easily as you can otherwise, and that you're at a mobility disadvantage - grenades and other explosive weapons become harder to dodge.

What guns can penetrate what kind of structures?

Question

I seem to misjudge my destruction capability and shoot hopelessly through walls and structures, hoping to kill the guy I know is right behind it.

What guns are able to penetrate, are there any attachments or perks that improve penetration?

What about guns of aerial vehicles and rockets, like the Osprey Gunner and the Predator?

Asked by Bora

Answer

The more damage a gun (or class of guns) does, the more likely it is to be able to shoot through objects. That means that LMGs, assault rifles, and sniper rifles are better equipped to shoot through objects than shotguns, SMGs, machine pistols, or handguns. This doesn't apply to launchers, which inflict massive damage but are effectively useless for penetrating objects.

If you want to better shoot through objects, pick a LMG, assault rifle, or sniper rifle and use it a lot in order to increase your weapon proficiency level with that particular weapon. The more you use it, the more proficiency choices you unlock -- including one called Impact, which gives your bullets increased penetration. It's effects are similar to Hardened in Black Ops, Deep Impact in MW, and Full Metal Jacket in MW2.

As for aerial weapons, things that deal bullet damage (the helicopters) are more likely to penetrate objects than the ones that deal explosive damage (a predator missile).

Ultimately, even with with the proper gun and Impact equipped, it is going to take some trial and error to get a feel for when you can shoot through stuff, as some objects are simply easier to penetrate than others, regardless of appearance. One example that springs to mind are the concrete pillars in the center of the map Interchange; they are notoriously easy to shoot through even though they shouldn't be.

In Call of Duty Elite, what does SPM mean?

In the Call of Duty Elite service, on the Connect tab, it is possible to sort the members of your clan by different stats. One of them is "SPM", which is presumably a X per minute stat. What does it mean?

This appears to be referring to "score per minute" - a measure of how many points you are gaining per unit time.

What are the four slots under emblem and badges

Question

I'v just noticed that we have 4 slots for some sort of badges.

I'm just level 3 and I already have 2. I didn't accomplish anything special. Some players have 4 or 3. Everyone seems to have a least one.

Why ?

Asked by Luc M

Answer

These are to show your current level in all of the previous Call of Duty Games. Here is the order:

1st slot - Call of Duty: Modern Warfare
2nd slot - Call of Duty: World at War
3rd slot - Modern Warfare 2
4th slot - Black Ops

Also, if you have prestiged in any of the previous games you get a prestige token to use in the Modern Warfare 3 Prestige Shop (with a max of one token per previous game, there is nothing to be gained after the first prestige).

Asked by eMi

Answer

Infinity Ward will allow to let us Prestige until Prestige 20. But at the moment this isn't possible (maybe next Update will unlock the last 5 Prestiges).

If I Prestige NOW, I will get Prestige 15 again and start from level 1 (Can get a Prestige Token doing that) but thats everything.

Question

The "Goodbye" challenge requires that you fall more than 30 ft to your death. The only place I've found where this is possible is the well on Seatown. I've fallen to my death plenty of times, but only got the challenge at the well. Are there other locations where it is possible?

Yes, I've found one other spot. On the map mission, there is a barrel at the edge of the wooden bridge. Jump on top of that and jump to the lower ground without touching the bridge. I took a few screen shots to demonstrate:

Fixed gun emplacement challenge

Question

Is there any challenge/title/emblem that you get for kills with a fixed gun emplacement like the ones found on Bakara or Liberation? In previous games there was, but I've gotten a 5+ killstreak, and it seems like there was no benefit.

Asked by EBongo

Answer

Yes. The MG Master challenge makes a return, in the last set of unlocked challenges. It requires a 5-kill streak with the mounted miniguns. You might not be able to complete the challenge before unlocking it at level 70.

You're lucky to be playing on a console. We PC players only get the machine gun on Bakara to attempt that challenge with... :(

If I finish the campaign mode, will I get some benefit when I play on-line?

Question

I know that I'll have visited the map and I'll probably have tried every weapon...

Benefits I'm thinking about are like a new class, stronger weapons, emblems, badges...

Asked by Luc M

Answer

If you mean will you unlock badges, better weapons for multiplayer then no. They all have to be unlocked by playing multiplayer only.

The only benefit you'll get is from more experience with the game. Like you say, you'll be more familiar with the weapons and slightly more familiar with the maps (although overall layout will be different).

I'd definitely recommend playing through single player first just to get your bearings with the game, but be advised multiplayer is a whole different ball game to single player, good luck!

MW3 Care Packages - Killstreak Challenges

Question

I previously asked this question:

Black Ops Care Packages - Killstreak Challenges

It's asking whether or not killstreak rewards which are given when you open a care package killstreak contribute to challenges.

Do they contribute in Modern Warfare 3 as well?

Asked by Curt

Answer

Yes, they do. However, I believe it is only towards the "Prestige" challenges, and not the ones under the Assault Strike Package challenge menu.

Even though I never take the Assault strike package, I have several levels of multiple killstreak rewards "Prestige" challenges completed because of care packages I picked up that belonged to other players.

How to learn Survival Mode maps in MW3?

Question

I want to explore Survival Mode maps, Are there ways I can do it like split screen or Team Death Match?

Asked by iraSenthil

Answer

All the Survival Mode maps are the same maps that appear in MW3's multiplayer. If you want to just walk around the map unopposed, simply start a local game with that match and walk around. However, simply knowing the maps isn't enough - until you fight enemies on the map, you don't really get a good feel for sight lines, blind spots, flanks, etc. But yes, you can explore them on your own.

To start a local match select "Multiplayer" from the main screen:

Then select "Split Screen" (X360/PS3 only; if on PC, you're out of luck exploring the maps):

Then set up the match and you can walk around the maps at your leisure!

What is the best gametype/strategy for leveling a sniper rifle?

Question

Having played plenty with shorties, ARs, and SMGs, I'd like to give sniper rifles a fair try. It seems to me that the variable zoom scope that you get towards the highest weapon xp levels is essential, but it is so tedious to get there! I'm hoping there is some strategy or gametype that I'm missing, that makes it less of a beating.

Asked by EBongo

Answer

The variable zoom scope is not essential but it is a big plus on the larger maps. Other useful attachments are extended mags if using a semi-automatic like the Barret 50 cal or the AS50 (bullet spam can make up for bad aim on occasion). If you don't want to have to camp and snipe a lot another strategy is to equip the ACOG scope on one of the above rifles and use it more as a long range assault rifle, with the Kick proficiency and the ACOG they can be remarkably stable and accurate.

In the long run the best way to level up a sniper rifle is simply to practice with it until you get good enough that you can use it on most maps so that you are always racking up XP with it. Using it with an ACOG will make it more versatile and usable on smaller maps but on smaller maps you're more likely to take a shotgun to the face so probably not the best of ideas unless you are a lethal no-scoper.

The other benefit of using it all the time is that you'll learn all the crazy sight lines and get better at quick scoping which are both important to getting more kills and thus more XP.

Personally I predominantly play sniper and the only maps I don't snipe on are Hard Hat, Dome, Carbon and Arkaden because they are too compact and busy. Maps like Output, Bakara, Mission and Fallen are probably the best sniping maps but if you're a beginner with the sniper be prepared to get taken out a lot by the experienced snipers until you've learned the sight lines and ways to move around the map out of the enemy sniper sights.

Bootleg, Lockdown, Resistance, Seatown, Underground and Village are all good maps for practicing sniping because they have some good sight lines but are less prone to being dominated by expert snipers like the aforementioned maps. Again for these mid size maps ACOG scope would work pretty well.

Edit

So I think the main difference between variable zoom vs ACOG is your preference for play style. Variable zoom scope will give you really long range kills but you need to be good at holding your breath and aiming, ACOG is super stable but shorter range. It works better if you like to move and snipe while variable zoom is better if you prefer to stay still and move infrequently.

Perk wise I use Sleight of Hand Pro as it is useful for fast switching to a machine pistol as a close quarters weapon. If you want to move around the map a lot (or camp in the open) blind eye may be useful to give you immunity from air support.

Secondly I use Hardline to get my killstreak faster, if you prefer like me to snipe from the same place for a while and move around infrequently it can be hard to rack up large kill streaks as enemies will often come flush you out of your favorite sniping nest. I usually go with Assualt Strike Package, either:

  • UAV, Care Package, Predator
  • UAV, Predator, Attack Helicopter
  • Predator, Attack Helicopter, Reaper (if you're good at racking up the kills without dying this can be a potent combo)

For the final perk either Marksman for the longer range enemy identification plus Marksman Pro will give you longer hold breath when you get it. Once I unlock it I usually switch to Dead Silence which is useful for sneaking around to flank enemies without them hearing your footsteps.

Equipment wise I usually have Portable Radar as my tactical (I unlocked it with a prestige token using Unlock Gear so I get it immediately rather than at level 75) which helps me spot enemies trying to sneak up on me. Paired with sleight of hand this usually gives me times to swap to my machine pistol at short notice.

For lethal either bouncing betty/claymore are useful for booby trapping an entrance to a sniper nest or just dropping in an inconspicuous place on a well travelled route to pick up extra kills.

Do kick and grip stack?

Question

The first weapon proficiency you unlock is "kick", and for some weapons one of the first weapon attachments is "grip". Both reduce recoil, but I've often wondered if one reduces more than the other, and if the effect stacks. Since both are pretty easy to get, switching between them can of course allow for different proficiency and attachment combinations of interest (assuming they are equivalent). If they are not equivalent though, I might favor the option that had better recoil reduction - since for me in can be a real factor in my aim.

Asked by EBongo

Answer

According to the Call of Duty wiki yes they do stack and Kick reduces recoil more than Grip except on the M60.

It states the following (I added the emphasis):

The Grip, again, lowers recoil for weapons and is unlocked by leveling up weapons. Also, with the new Kick Proficiency, players can combine the Grip with Kick to further decrease recoil. It is unlocked for shotguns at Weapon Proficiency Level 2 and LMGs at Weapon Proficiency Level 8. It should be noted that the Grip does not provide as much recoil reduction as the Kick proficiency, albeit on the M60, where Grip provides much better recoil reduction, but as a compromise, gives the weapons it is attached to improved hipfire accuracy.

Whole title: "Some players may find some game content in one of the missions disturbing or offensive"

So ... I clicked on the wrong option. Is there a way to revert it and choose the "No I won't be offended by it" option?

I assume you mean the message : "Some players may find some game content in one of the missions disturbing or offensive"

I don't believe you can change your decision on the same play through of the game. I know from personal experience that if you start another play through you will get asked again. Since it only effects one non-interactive cutscene, you may also consider just watching it on YouTube.
