How does the Realm of Diggle Gods DLC affect the original game?

Question

How does the DLC affect existing save games? Do I have start over in order to access DLC material?

What I understood from the description is that there are new levels and items, but what I didn't quite get was that are those DLC levels some where deep down in the end of the game or something? Or is it just that next level that I access can be from the DLC?

Asked by Tx3

Answer

You need to enable/disable the expansion when you start the character, so in order to see the new content, you'd need to start a new character.

Why are my weapons randomly lowering their stats?

Question

Is there a sort of weapon decay in dungeons of dredmor? Or is some enemy doing this? If so, is there a way to raise the stat back up?

Asked by corroded

Answer

Corruption-attack monsters

Certain enemies (especially the infamous Blobs of Corruption, as well as some bosses and other creatures - you can get more specific information here) have the ability to corrupt items you wear when they hit you.

Traps

Another way of corrupting items is through item corrupting traps (Corruption Fluid Trap), which look like this:

enter image description here

Dealing with corruption-based monsters and traps

The easiest way to decrease amount of corruptions your items get from mobs is to eliminate such corrupt-inducing creatures from distance, i.e. by using spells, crossbows, throwing weapons etc., or kill them before they will be able to retaliate (i.e. defeat them with a single blow or stun them repeatedly).

You might also want to remove/replace some of your key or most valuable equipment on sight of any corruption-inducing monsters or when the above trap is blocking an important path, then deal with the threat (kill monsters or try to disarm or step on the trap). After the danger of corruption is no more, you can put these items back on.

Ensure you have your trap detection skill high enough to see the problematic trap before stepping on it.

Anvil of Krong

You can also have your items being 'corrupted' (addition of bad enchantment) by Krong, when using an item on his Anvil. The chances of getting bad enchantment have been discussed in another Q&A here, which kind of points to the following wiki page.

Removing corruption from items

Last but not least, if you happen to have a Demonologist skill tree, you have access to its ultimate skill - Flames of the Heckforge. It seems to remove corruptions from an item, though it also weakens your character significantly (-4 to all primary stats) for considerable amount of time (99 turns). It also seems to be bugged and not always working in DoD versions prior to 1.0.9. Head here for more information.

Note the Demonologist skill tree is only available in the Realm of the Diggle Gods DLC package, available on Steam.

Omnipotent Pork Sword or Katana

Question

In Dungeons of Dredmor, I am havign a hard time to pick between these two.

Katana adds 10 slashing, 5 piercing, and 5 enemy dodge reduction.

Omnipotent adds 2 slashing, 2 piercing, 10 necromantic, 10 hp, and 2 hp regen bonus.

On paper, it seems like Omnipotent is better hands down(26 total stats, with the 10 necromantic bypassing armor vs 10 slashing), but why does it have a HUGE difference in stars? Katana is a level 10 Sword class weapon vs the level 4 sword class of Omnipotent Pork Sword.

Is there something I'm missing here?

Answer

Perhaps your Omnipotent Pork Sword has extra enchantments on it? The Dredmor Wiki says that this sword comes with +2 slashing, +2 piercing, and +10 HP. The other stats aren't listed there.

The "quality" stars are set by the type of weapon, and don't change if it's been enchanted, so that might explain why it is quite a bit better than a Katana.

On top of the fact that additional enchantments aren't a factor in quality stars, after looking at the sword-class weapon list, it doesn't look like you can really compare artifacts to "standard" weapons by their quality stars alone.

In general, it seems like the quality star system is kind of bogus. You'll need to just take a look at the stats on your items to decide which is better.

Can monsters open doors or teleport via glyphs?

Question

One of my current strategies in Dungeons of Dredmor is to close myself in a room in order to heal. Sometimes also I'll escape via the Satanic Displacement Glyph system. Thus far, I've not found any enemies that can get to me when I do one of these things, so I'm assuming when I do them that I'm safe from harm.

However, I'm only on the second level of the dungeon. (This is the furthest I've ever gotten! wooo!) Will this strategy eventually fail me?

Answer

Monsters cannot open doors or use the satanic displacement glyph. They can't close doors, either, and they cannot use stairs.

Keep in mind your pets, if you have any, can't do any of these either.

At what level should I start praying to Inconsequentia?

Question

Inconsequentia, the Goddest of Sidequests, can grant quests leading to random artifacts. I've tried her twice on two fresh characters; both times, the quest was about killing a horribly out of depth baddie that was just lurking behind the door and had little trouble disposing of me.

When should I pray to Incosequentia?

Answer

After the first floor, I generally just pray whenever I see the statue - the quest is either going to be trivial (ie, go find an item or put this item with the shrine) or hard (kill this special monster or an army of regular monsters) and the difficulty of the quest doesn't change much with respect to how long you've been on a floor.

On the first floor, I might take a few character levels first, as you'll likely gain several levels just exploring the floor, and levels are relatively cheap. When you stop being beaten half to death by every bat and blob that shows up, you'll know you're ready.

Even if you clear the whole level like Oak suggests, monsters will slowly respawn. The random nature of the quest, coupled with the random nature of the floor, and the random nature of the game in general, mean that things can go from very good to very bad extremely quickly, with or without the quest.

I'd focus on glitching, trapping, or debuffing the AI (ie, sticking them in a spot where they can't get to you, fighting near a Glyph/door, or rooting them in place) to give your hero a bit longer to mash on them before they can do damage to you.

And remember, Dying is Fun!

What are the names of all of the monster taxa? I'm planning to convert some into booze

Question

Vegetable, Demon, Undead, Animal, etc. - does anyone know what ALL of the monster taxa are? I'm working on a Chef skill for brewing and frying chunks of live monsters in combat, damaging them and creating consumables.

You'd think the taxa would be listed at one of the several Dredmor wikis that exist, but it appears not.

Answer

The valid taxa are:

  • Animal (ie, Diggle)
  • Construct (ie, Golem)
  • Demon (ie, Djinn)
  • Other (ie, Blobby)
  • Undead (ie, Deth)
  • Vegetable (ie, Pumpkinn (and yes, that's how it's spelled.))

I pulled this data from the XML file (monDB.xml) that came with the game, so it should represent all the possible monster types.

What is “A Tome of Fire Or Ice”?

Question

Has anyone figured out how the room for "A Tome of Fire Or Ice" works, by chance?

I'm only on the third floor, so I figure it's not that difficult, but unless my Google-fu was just being weak, I didn't have much luck finding it.

I simply don't know what it is or does.

There are two pulsating orange-rimed tiles, two obvious ice and fire (left to right) wall decorations, and the book seems mostly useless and just mentions dishes.

Any assistance on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks much in advance.

Answer

Okay, so I took a chance and took my adventurer across the fiery-side orange-rimmed tile and received a buff to his fire damage output (+2) and his fire resistance (+6).

Good enough for me... oh, and I didn't die!

How does Five-Finger Discount work?

Question

The ability description reads:

You can 'purchase' items from the store for as cheap as free. Don't let Brax catch you at it though, or he'll send his Dread Collectors after you.

The wiki agrees:

Five-Finger Discount allows you to steal an item from Brax's shop by destroying the pedestal below it. Brax might notice you and turn hostile, which more likely than not leads to Fun.

OK... so how does this skill actually work? Is it just a random dice roll to see if Brax notices me or not? Or is there something specific I can do to assure success? What happens if I stand in a location which Brax cannot see (is there such a location in shops)?

Answer

As far as I can tell, it's a random dice roll. Failing the dice roll will count as shoplifting, which causes Brax (and all the other Brax's on the level) to become hostile and summon Dread Collectors after you any time you're on that floor. Killing all the Brax will stop the flow of Dread Collectors, although you'll still have to deal with any stragglers.

On other floors, the Brax clones won't be hostile, as long as you don't steal from them.

While there are (occasionally) squares in shops that Brax can't see, this doesn't stop him from noticing you if you're trying to shoplift, or if you have 5 Finger Discount and you fail the roll. He's got eyes in the back of his head, I guess. (or maybe some really good security cameras?)

How can I have Fun with the Lutefisk Cube?

Question

I recently attempted to convert a spare Horadric Lutefisk Cube I found into lutefisk.

Instead of lutefisk, the cubes produced a fiery death. (I survived the initial explosion, but the fire got me the next turn. Cause of death is listed as "spell mine.")

Are there any other items (e.g. N-dimensional Lathe) which produce Fun instead of lutefisk when placed inside the cube? If so, what kinds of Fun can I obtain through fanatical devotion to the lutefisk god?

Answer

To answer the question, no, only Lutefisk cubes have this reaction when put into another Lutefisk cube, anything else will just be skoled into lutefisk.

How does dual-wielding affect weapon skill special attacks and stat bonuses?

Question

Do the stat bonuses and passive special attack chances from weapon skills double when dual-wielding two weapons of the same type? Do they stack when dual-wielding with two different weapon types (i.e. a mace and a staff)? What about when using a weapon skills active attacks?

Answer

If you are dual wielding you get all of the applicable weapon skill bonuses for each weapon. Therefore if you wield two weapons of the same type, you get twice the bonuses from your weapon skill tree.

I don't yet know about special attack chance, but I'll keep an eye out and update this answer if I find out.

The wishing lever - what are the blue drops on ground?

Question

I found a magic penny. then pull the lever and a 3x3 of blue drops appears on the ground - walking over them pops them like bubbles, but I notice no other effect. What is this about?

Answer

Each of the drops works like the 4th spell in the Psionics skill, restoring 4 hp.

Does using melee weapons help ranged attacks, and vice versa?

Question

Let's say I've found a crossbow which has a bonus to enemy dodge chance reduction. Will that help me with my melee attacks? And let's say I have the axe skill and am duel-wielding a pair of axes. Will my increased critical chance also affect my ranged attacks?

Answer

Any non damage modifiers on weapons(ranged or melee and even shields) apply to the character, regardless of what attack you decide to use.

If your axe skill increases a non-damage related skill(critical chance is damage related skill), it will apply to your character.

So yes, abilities you gain from items and skills that arent damage modifiers, but other bonuses, will apply to all attacks.

What good is ground meat?

Question

The ingot grinder can ground up cheese to make grated cheese (which can then be used for making an omelet). The grinder can also make ground meat which appears to just reduce the quality of the meat. Are there any recipes or cooking options to make this back into a better food product?

Answer

Ground Meat / Ground Cheese heals 3 each, and you get several per grinding, so in some cases when grinding up the lower quality foods, you'll end up with a net gain in healing food. Offal heals 3, grinding it up produces food that heals for a total of 6, albeit it in two actions.

Since it stacks, it can also be useful when you're running low on inventory space, you can combine all your meat and cheese into two stacks.

As far as I am aware, they aren't used in any recipes.

EDIT: Also, now that I think of it, it would enable you to create more lutefisk using the horadric lutefisk box. Since you get a minimum of 1 lutefisk per item, grinding the meat and cheese would enable you to get more lutefisk out of meat and cheese items.

What is the Harmless Red Cube?

Question

I keep finding this cube in the dungeon. But I can never interact with it. Is there a purpose to it, or is it just some Easter Egg?
enter image description here

Answer

According to the Steam forums, this doesn't appear to serve any purpose within the game. However, it might be a reference to one of the game's beta testers:

I'm relatively (90%) sure it's a reference to DeadlyRedCube, an IRC regular, beta tester, and game developer who is friends with the devs of Dredmor

So it seems to just be a nod to a friend.

When is it safe to use the Anvil of Krong?

Question

Is there a way to know whether an item will be enchanted or cursed by an anvil of Krong?

At first it happened to me when I used the same item on three different anvils. Recently it has also happened on the second anvil. Is there a rule for this? Or is it just random chance whenever you use it?

Answer

No, it's not tied to the number of times you've used a particular item on the anvil. There's a random chance each time you drop an item, regardless of what happened to that item previously. I've had things cursed the first time I've dropped them, for instance.

The Dredmor wiki says that it's 2/7 chance of a curse, and a 5/7 chance of a blessing.

I'm always torn between using a really good item on it, in the hopes that it gets better, or using a kind of "meh" item in the hopes that it either becomes good or destroying it won't matter. Frequently what I'll do is try to use something that I have a duplicate of, or at least a backup for that slot. That way if it gets better, it's a win, and if it gets worse, oh well, I've got a backup.

How do I use ranged weapons?

Question

I feel like an idiot. I have the starting crossbow equipped, but my character, instead of using ranged attack, runs up to the enemy to melee them instead with her boots. How exactly should I get her to use the crossbow instead?

Answer

To use a ranged weapon, you need to right click on the arrows you want to use, the arrow will then show up in the yellow box to the right of your character portrait, and then right click on the enemy you want to fire at.

What creatures count as cute animals for the Killer Vegan skill?

Question

With the Killer Vegan set of skills killing cute animals results in a rather nasty debuff getting applied to your character. Which creature's deaths will trigger this?

Related: How does Killer Vegan skill work?

Answer

Monsters designated as 'animal' (rather than vegetable, undead, demon, etc...) may invoke the Fallen Vegan debuf. Also, eating non-vegan foods (meats, cheeses, eggs) may invoke the debuf.

What are the different combinations for the runes?

Question

In diggle gods expansion, there is a room that has three runes and a lever. The runes are pillar, growth and decay, and scrutiny. They can be placed in spots in the floor and a lever pulled. What are the different combinations for the runes and what do they produce?

For example - from top to bottom - pillar growth scrutiny produces a food vending machine when the lever is pulled.

Answer

Pillar Growth Scrutiny = Food Dispenser
Pillar Growth Scrutiny = Thrown Weapon Dispenser
Growth Pillar Scrutiny = Craft Dispenser
Scrutiny Growth Pillar = Drink Dispenser
Pillar Scrutiny Growth = Bolt Dispenser
