I'm sick of being attacked by balverines. What can I do?

Question

I HATE BALVERINES.

I liked fighting bands of mercenaries much better. Balverines are fast and strong and they do that thing where they leap straight up and land behind me so I'm swinging at thin air like some kind of fool.

I noticed that they didn't really show up in the game until after I'd made friends with the mercenaries by visiting their new tourist-trap camp. I still encounter bands of mercenaries from time to time, however, so the game hasn't replaced mercenaries with balverines entirely.

So, there are two parts to this question:

  • What is the most effective way to fight a band of balverines? Is there a particular combination of spells that scares them off? Or is it firearms or a sword that will make short work of them?
  • Is there rhyme or reason to when I'm confronted by balverines and when I'm confronted by mercenaries? If, for example, balverines only show up at night, I will make a point of only traveling through those certain points where you get attacked by stuff during the day. I don't think it's that simple, however.

Answer

They increase in number as you progress through the game, and unfortunately there isn't really any way to stop them. It doesn't really have to do with your decisions, but how far along in the game you are. I have yet to discover any pattern to their arrivals (I have seen them during the day) so I'm not sure there is any way to avoid them unfortunately. Note that they only appear "in Silverpines, Millfields, Mistpeak Valley and Hero of Bowerstone's Tomb".

As far as defeating them, there are a few weapons that provide bonuses against balverines. They are:

  • Lunarium Pounder (Hammer): +40% damage after killing 100 wolves or balverines
  • Trollblight (Hammer): +80% damage (they count as large enemies) after killing 10 large enemies with a flourish
  • Wolfsbane (Sword) (Limited Edition Only): +40% damage after killing 50 enemies with flourishes

I believe they may also count as evil enemies (couldn't find a place that said for sure) so if that is true, any weapon with bonuses against evil enemies will count for them as well.

Other than that, I'm not sure if there is any real 'good' way to beat them overall. It would depend on what skills you have so far, how many there are, what weapons you have, etc. If I remember correctly, by the time I was maxed out on everything, I think balverines were fairly 'easy' (though enemies level with you so it will only ever be so easy).

Where the heck did my wife go?

Question

I married Harriet the Furniture Seller in Brightwall Village. We lived there very happily until she started complaining about our house. I moved her to the nicest house in Brightwall, and still she complained. So I set her up in a nice little house in the Bowerstone Old Quarter. It even had an indoor staircase! Harriet the Furniture Seller seemed very happy there.

Then, we destroyed the Old Quarter en route to my becoming Queen. Harriet the Furniture Seller's and my house was not spared from the fiery destruction. But I'm playing through the game as a good guy, so I paid Reaver Industries to repair the Old Quarter. Our house was rebuilt complete with its little plaque with the heart on it, but I can't find Harriet the Furniture Seller anywhere. She's not hanging out in the house, in Bowerstone Market where I usually find her, or anywhere on the streets of the Old Quarter. She's not back in Brightwall. I moved our household to a new house in Bowerstone Market to see if that would free her from some glitch, but she's still nowhere to be found.

Where, oh where, has my poor Harriet the Furniture Seller gone?

Answer

I'm sorry to tell you this, but all the money in Fable cannot bring back your dear wife from the destruction of the Old Quarter...

Can you continue playing after you finish the main storyline?

Question

I have a dozen side quests pending in my quest list, but I'm tempted to complete the main story first.

Is it possible to keep playing the game even after you're done with the story?

Answer

Yes.

Does anything transfer from Fable 2 to Fable 3?

Question

I know a lot of games have been doing this recently (Mass Effect), but does Fable 3 have any such features? Just wondering if I should boot Fable 2 up and finish some things before playing Fable 3.

Answer

Peter Molyneux has said that the only change you'll notice is the things other people say to you. Nothing major.

A complete description of the relationship can be found on the lionhead forums.

Is there a black version of the chicken suit, without having to paint it?

Question

In Fable-3, are there multiple ways to get the chicken suit, ending in multiple default suit colors?

Answer

There is more than one way to get a chicken suit:

The chicken suit purchased will always be the same color

If I restart Fable 3, do I get to keep any of my weapons or equipment from the previous game?

Question

Since there doesn't seem to be a way to try alterante endings (without restarting and losing my save), do I at least get the benefit from previous run throughs?

Answer

No, your progress on previous games does not give you any direct benefits in a new game. Items you purchased (or obtained for free) from the Sanctuary Shop, like the Yule Costume, are available across all saves, and some statistics are tracked across all your games, and of course your knowledge of quests and areas and the results of your previous decisions will help you in new games, but when you create a new hero, you'll be choosing between a basic sword and a basic hammer and between a basic rifle and a basic pistol.

What is the default keyboard layout for Fable 3 on the PC?

Question

I managed to find the combat settings, and figure out how to change those, but I'm still looking for ways to access, for example, the main menu from the keyboard. Any pointers?
