How can pyros rocket jump in Team Fortress 2?

Question

I've heard people talk about pryos being able to rocket-jump in TF2. Since they obviously don't have a rocket launcher, how is this done?

Asked by Jeffrey

Answer

You need to have excellent timing and accuracy with reflecting an enemy rocket. You wait for the rocket to get close to you, timing the reflect to aim it at your own feet and jump and crouch, much like a Soldier would. Except it's not your rocket.

Is the range of the Phlogistinator actually longer than the range of the other flamethrowers?

Question

Look at the next few seconds of this video, demonstrating the phlogistinator in action:

As you can see, the effective range of this flame thrower extends surprisingly much further than the graphical effect does, and this is pretty much a fact. On the other hand, the range is so surprisingly longer, it begs the question — is the Phlogistinator's range actually longer than the other flamethrowers'?

Some YouTube comments seem to agree, but we know that doesn't mean very much. On the other hand, the relevant wiki article mentions nothing about this.

Answer

I tested this on 1/17/12 - results may change in the future.

A friend and I went out to the bridge on 2fort. We used a teleporter as the marker, and a dispenser as the target. I incrementally moved the dispenser closer and closer to the teleporter, while he puffed at it with the Phlog. When the dispenser started taking damage, I left it there, and he switched to the standard flamethrower.

When he got back, the flamethrower blast didn't reach the dispenser, but, when I moved it one more step forward, it did.

Since a teleporter is more than one step wide, and we probably didn't get the positioning exactly correct, I am going to put this down to measurement error.

Results: There is no practical difference between the range of the Phlog and the standard flamethrower.

(With more accurate measurements, I am certain we would find that there is no actual difference either.)

What does “W+1” mean with respect to the Pyro?

Question

There's a more or less subtle reference I'm missing in comics 79, 87 and 131 (pictured below) of Nerf Now!

What is it about?

enter link description here

[...] There are moments w + 1 is very effective and I dare to say, fun. However, there is a time and a place for everything, and going head-first on half-enemy team isn't one of these times. [...]

Answer

I've not heard of W+1 specifically, but the more common W+M1 refers to holding W and the primary mouse button (typically with the primary weapon) to run forward spewing fire. They seem to mean the same thing according to the photo notes on #79 and #87, on the W+1 speech bubbles.

It's a common offensive strategy effective with ÜberCharges, but also one that's stereotypically associated with new/bad players (or players new to the Pyro).

You may hear W+M1 in other FPS games too.

What can the Pyro return to sender using the compression blast?

Question

What exactly can the Pyro's compression blast effect? I've reflected rockets back at soldiers, but I've had very sketchy luck trying to bounce other things back at enemy players.

Answer

The list of things you can reflect:

  • Soldier Rockets (Rocket Launcher/Black Box or Direct Hit) Reflected Rocket kill icon
  • Pyro FlaresReflected Flare kill icon
  • Demoman GrenadesReflected Grenade kill icon
  • Demoman Sticky Bombs (Sticky Bomb Launcher/Scottish Resistance)Reflected Sticky kill icon
  • Crusader's Crossbow arrows
  • Huntsman arrows (which can headshot enemies) Reflected Arrow kill iconReflected arrow headshot kill icon
  • Sandman BaseballsReflected Sandman ball kill icon
  • Mad Milk
  • Jarate
  • Level 3 Sentry Gun Rockets

All reflected items that do damage will deal mini-crits. If they are full-crit, the damage dealt is still critical.

You can also airblast already placed sticky bombs to move them off of door frames, control points, etc...

Note that there are two speeds for items to fly. Soldier standard/Black Box rockets and Level 3 Sentry Gun Rockets are slow, while everything else is fast. Fast items are much harder to reflect.

The game has custom kill icons for reflected Huntsman arrow headshots, but at last check, they were not actually used.
