Is it possible to play Street Fighter X Tekken with 2 players online on one PC?

Question

The XBox360 version allows only one player to play online, so if you want to play online with your buddy (same team), you basically need 2 XBox360s each with a copy of the game.

Will the PC version be the same? Do I need 2 PCs with one copy each to play 2 player tag team online?

Asked by ayckoster

Answer

No. Similar to the Xbox360 version, same system online co-op will not be available on the PC version.

Will Spec-Ops mode spoil my single player experience?

Question

I got MW3 but haven't got around to start the single player campaign yet. A friend of mine asked me to play with him the Spec-Ops mode.

Will playing the Spec-Ops mode before completing the single player mode spoil the single player story/settings or is it completely independent?

Asked by JohnoBoy

Answer

I would say that the answer to this depends on how sensitive you are to spoilers. As has been noted, the survival mode is just the multiplayer maps with infinite waves of increasingly difficult enemy forces. There's no plot- or single-player-related spoilers to be had there.

The mission mode draws its maps directly from the single player campaign, but the stories told are all tangential to or from a different perspective from the missions in the single player campaign. In some, the objectives tie directly into story elements, but are provided to you without any context.

Someone will shout "Kidnap X!" or "Save Y!" and then you've got to go and do that thing, but there's no plot context for the mission given in the mission - the story that ties it all together is presented in the single player campaign. At the end of the mission you might know that someone is kidnapped or lived through a kidnapping, but you won't know why that's important or how it ties into the rest of the story.

If you're feeling particularly sensitive, I'd avoid the following missions prior to playing the related single-player campaign mission:

  • Milehigh Jack
  • Hostage Taker
  • Toxic Paradise

All three of these directly relate to plot elements in the campaign, although they are told from different perspectives.

The rest (IMHO) are less plot related and more just rehashes of single player maps with different objectives. My recommendation is to play the co-op with your friend, regardless of whether you've finished the campaign - it's the most fun mode in the game, especially if you've got a good co-op team. However, if you're super sensitive to spoilers, your best bet is to play single player first.

What are Borderlands' multiplayer game modes?

Question

I have the game and all of its DLC. I am at level 18 in the single-player.

Do you suggest that I finish the single-player before starting multiplayer? What are Borderlands' multiplayer features/game modes?

Asked by Drake

Answer

The main Multiplayer mode is co-op.

I would level as co-op from now on. It's very fun (up to 4 players), mobs become more difficult and loot is better.

What is nice about co-op is that each player continues to play in their own story but you all play together (for example 3 people help you on your Quest xy but they already did it).

As far as I can remember, the player's game with the least progression is always the game the other players will also play in.

Does the “wife” mode cooperative mechanic exist outside of Super Mario Galaxy 2?

Question

Forgive the potentially offensive name, but my wife lovingly dubbed the cooperative style of play in Super Mario Galaxy 2 "wife mode" for the following reasons:

  • The secondary character cannot die
  • The secondary character is genuinely useful, and can help the main character by paralyzing enemies (via hugging them)
  • The secondary character can also play their own sort of side game, looking for powerups and coins while the main character is doing other things

Is this an unprecedented technique? Does it have a better name than "wife mode?"

Answer

A simple answer to your first question is no, it's not unprecedented. The first Super Mario Galaxy had a more limited version, and of course comments and answers have mentioned other games as well.

The last question's easy to answer: there's certainly a better name than "wife mode". Sexism is rampant in gaming, and while "wife mode" might be accurate in individual cases (as in your own: after all, it was your wife who used the name), as a general term, as you might suspect, it implies two assumptions that could be taught in Sexism 101:

  • The person playing the secondary character is the wife (or girlfriend or whatever), because the primary gamer in the house is the man.
  • The person playing the secondary character needs extra assistance (invulnerability, doesn't have to follow the plot), because that person is not an equally-skilled gamer, which is because that person is the wife.

Some women are not avid gamers, and some women are not skilled gamers ... but it has nothing to do with their gender, despite the existence of places in the gaming community where that idea is accepted as fact. So there's no reason to use a name for that mode that suggests it applies to only wives or only women.

There are plenty of gender-neutral terms we could use that would still be accurate. For example, the original Super Mario Galaxy calls it Co-Star Mode. I think that's actually a pretty good name: co-stars are not necessarily as important as stars in TV shows and movies, but they can contribute a lot on their own, and of course in the context of SMG, there's the Star pun (intended, I'm sure).

Assistant Mode, Helper Mode, those would work as well, and I'm sure there are more like that ... and none of them make assumptions about the person who'd be playing them.

Left 4 Dead local co-op for 4 players

Question

Does the original Left 4 Dead support local co-op for 4 players? Not using XBox Live but physically sitting in the same room looking at the same tv.

Answer

Left 4 Dead and its sequel both support 2 players maximum in local co-op mode.

You can, however, join a campaign game lobby with a team of two local players and round out the game with 2 more. Alternatively, you can System Link 2 Xboxes with 2 TVs and play 4 player in the same room (assuming all of this gear fits in the same room ;) )

Is there a site that lists Xbox 360 FPS with offline co-op mode?

Question

I will buy a XBOX 360 FPS game for my brother for Christmas. Because we play oft together, I would like to buy a FPS which supports co-op offline playing. We have had a lot of fun with COD MW2, COD World At War (a little bit frustrating that it didn't save our progress in co-op mode though).

I am looking into a series of lists, but the problem is that they always consider online co-op, which is not what we want.

Do you know any lists of Xbox 360 FPS games with offline co-op mode?

Thanks

Answer

I recommend you check out www.Co-Optimus.com, it has an extensive catalogue of games by co-op features, and you can filter by online/offline, genre, etc.

This is their X360 section

Playing local + online coop with one headphone set

Question

I'm willing to play from my XBox with a friend of mine on some game that allow local (split-screen) + online co-op. I only have one headphone set, though. Is it possibile to have the audio incoming from online partners routed to the TV set while still having a headphone attached to the controller so that we can speak?

Answer

Yes. In the settings (I can't recall where atm, unfortunately), there is an option to have voice chat go to your headset, to your TV along with game audio, or both. If you set it to go to your TV both players should be able to hear voice chat.

How can I add bots to an Alien Swarm online game?

Question

How can I play Alien Swarm with only one friend and have the AI control the other two characters?

I find it very difficult to play with only 2 characters, and I'd like to fill the empty slots with AI.

I know it must be possible somehow.

EDIT: The accepted answer works, but the bots don't do anything more than firing (no healing, no welding, nothing). I have to control them to do anything more than just firing.

Does anybody know how to solve this?

Answer

To add a bot to your game: cl_selectm (marinenum) (slot)

To remove a bot from your game: cl_dselectm (marinenum)

(marinenum) should be between 0-7 and corresponds to the character to be added.

(slot) should be between 0-3 and relates to the player slot the bot will fill. -1 can also be used; this will fill the next available slot.

These commands must be used while in the lobby; using them anywhere else will result in invalid command errors.

How to play co-op with mutual streaming?

Question

Is it somehow possible to play a co-op game with a small overlay window showing someone else's screen while streaming the own screen content to them?

How can it be achieved, preferably with freeware?

Answer

Have you tried simply using justin.tv or livestream and a built-in system like the steam or origin web browsers as overlays? If you only need to view the other person's screen when stuck on a puzzle or something (a portal-like game, I suppose) this should be an easy to set up solution (though as was already mentioned, Portal 2 already has this functionality built in).

I know you would prefer a free solution, but I'll also take this opportunity to plug a dual-monitor computer setup. Monitors can be had for around $100 if you wait for a deal. Used CRT monitors can be had for cheap or free if you ask around. You will never believe how much more productive you can be with dual monitors until you actually try it out.

BF3 Coop points

Question

What is the quickest way to earn points in BF3 Coop (to unlock new weapons)? Does the difficulty level matter? Number of enemies killed individually or collectively?

Moreover, which of the 6 levels gives you (ballpark) the most points?

Answer

It is my understanding that the last co-op mission is the best on a "time spent vs co-op points earned" basis.

There are two things you can do on the final co-op mission to optimize points:

  1. When you reach the bank with the police, don't advance up the steps. Apparently enemies respawn forever if you fail to advance up the steps, and people have reported mission scores of up to 200k here. However, I don't know if this is efficient on a time spent to points earned basis.

  2. When you reach the bomb, intentionally fail to enter the correct code. Then repeat the mission. Apparently you can get between 3k-5k points in a little over a minute (say 1:20) with this method. That means you'd net around 180k co-op points in an hour.

There are a few co-op missions I'd definitely avoid as they take a long time to complete; the last mission feels like the shortest one to me.

Feel free to try it out and let us know how it goes!

Does GLaDOS hate Atlas, the blue robot?

Question

While in multi-player GLaDOS only seems to compliment Orange (P-Body) for winning and says that Blue (Atlas) is "Dead weight". I'm pretty sure this is standard because she says it when Orange is just holding a button down, but is it in anyway a reflection of your progress?

Answer

GlaDOS seems more interested in dividing Blue and Orange than picking favorites, and will show favor to either Blue or Orange. In the Yogscast, GlaDOS awards Orange "five science collaboration points" in one level (10:27 in), then awards the same to Blue in a later level (11:45 in):

In a later episode, GLaDOS states that:

  • the challenge would present a challenge for one of the two given one's performance so far, but doesn't say who (0:00)
  • the two form an excellent partnership with one handling the cerebral challenges and the other "ready to ponderously wander into action should the test suddenly become an eating contest", again doesn't say who is better (5:28)

But the smoking gun, as it were, that she doesn't necessarily favor Orange comes at 9:00 when she states:

To reiterate, this is not a competition. Still, if it were, Blue would be winning. [inaudible] Blue receives five science collaboration points.

So whether it's dependent on performance is possible (although unlikely if you watch these videos), but she doesn't seem to have a complete disdain for Blue.

Playing Ultimate DOOM and DOOM II Coop on Modern Hardware

Question

So, a friend and I want to work through DOOM I and II on coop over a coming weekend. What's the best way to do this on modern hardware? We don't want graphical improvements and fancy features (except maybe mouse look), we want a classic DOOM experience.

This will be over a local network with a Windows XP and a Windows 7 PC.

Has anyone had experience doing this?

Answer

With DOSBox you should have no problem

Here's a wiki

There you'll have some source port to play your favorite game :D

Note:

Doom requires a fairly fast computer to run inside DOSBox, but many ports of its source code exist for modern Operating Systems, so you may find more luck downloading one of them instead. Because Doom makes use of your sound card and potentially Modem, you should take care to match your dosbox.conf setting to the settings found in the SETUP.EXE found inside your Doom folder. For the most part the default options will work, but if you are making use of the Gravis Ultra Sound or MIDI audio devices you should pay special attention that the DMA, IRQ and Addresses all match.

Portal 2 Co-op with a single Steam account?

Question

I picked up Portal 2 and wanted to try co-op with my son. We have two computers, but just one Steam account. Usually this is fine since I just leave the family computer in offline mode. Unfortunately it would appear that Portal 2 only does co-op when Steam is online.

Is there a way to do Portal 2 Co-op / multiplayer with a single Steam account on two PC's? I saw you can with a PS3, and there is no split screen on a single PC.

Answer

As it sounds like you're aware, you cannot be logged in to Steam in two separate locations at the same time (unless one or both are in offline mode, and thus unable to play online).

But, as badp notes, another question talks about a hack for single-PC splitscreen.

Edit: Suprisingly, it looks like you can play with Steam offline over a LAN:

First got to this folder “C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\portal 2\portal2\scripts” Or to the relevant folder or drive where you installed Portal 2. Now you have to add the following code in the “extras.txt”

    "lan"
    {
        "title" "Host LAN"
        "subtitle" "sv_lan 1"
        "pic" "vgui/extras/attract01"
        "command" "sv_lan 1"
    }
    "lan"
    {
        "title" "Connect"
        "subtitle" "192.168.1.1"
        "pic" "vgui/extras/attract01"
        "command" "connect 192.168.1.1"
    }
    "lobby"
    {
        "title" "Start Coop Lobby"
        "subtitle" "Kind of pointless..."
        "pic" "vgui/extras/attract01"
        "command" "map mp_coop_lobby_2"
    }

Select Start LAN on the host computer and select Connect on the computer. Then the host should select Start. Make sure the IP Address is correct for the HOST.

Alternatively you can use the console:

  1. Enable the console via Main Menu, then hit Options: Keyboard and Mouse: Enable Developer’s Console OR add -console to the Portal 2 launch options.
  2. Press ~ to toggle the console.
  3. Run Portal 2 offline on both computers
  4. On the HOST sv_lan 1 in the console
  5. On the other type connect <host ip> in the console
  6. On the HOST type map mp_coop_start or any other MP map in the console

Where is the hidden weighted companion cube when playing Portal 2 in co-op? (Party of three achievement)

Question

Amazingly I'm having trouble googling for this one and I don't have the time going through all the chambers for crazy jumps etc...

Where is it?

Answer

It's at the end of the 9th Chamber of Course 4: Excursion Funnels.

Remember the part where you have to create a light bridge that crosses in front of the turrets on the conveyor belt, and they all just hit it one after the other and die? Normally you'd have to move that light bridge slightly to the left so that you can continue with the level.

Instead of moving the light bridge, place the exit portal of your excursion funnel beside it - so that you start moving backwards into the unexplored depths of the level. You'll pass by the cube, which you'll be able to see through the light bridge. Then you will die.

The achievement should pop here automatically. Here's a video of the process.

unknown sega genesis co-op game, help please!

Question

I don't know this games name and it's driving me insane. It was a birds eye view style game, and you were on the bottom shooting the enemies at the top. The graphics were actually not that bad, it was co-op, and there was a decent selection of characters, for sure there was a guy who looked similar to robocop, a black girl and guy, and i believe a wizard and elf (on top of a few other characters). It was somewhat like a mazed areas and you used objects to hide behind, but i don't think the game scrolled, it was a fixed background. f my memory is correct (going back a long time so this concept may be wrong) there were a set number of enemies and they didn't respawn, once you defeated them you moved to the next level. It isn't gauntlet but if anyone knows it would be beyond awesome

Answer

Is it Gain Ground?
