How can I beat level 3-15 in Angry Birds?

Question

I can't get past this level in Angry Birds. All I get is one black exploding bird and two white bomber birds:

Angry Birds 3-15

I can use the black bomber to kill the left two pigs, but after that there's such a big pile of concrete on top of the other pigs that nothing I try gets through.

Asked by Joel Spolsky

Answer

Here's a video walkthrough of 3-11 through 3-15:

How do I get 3 stars in level 2-12?

Question

I am trying to get 3 stars in all Angry Birds levels, but now I am stuck with 2 stars at Level 1-2-12. I tried for more than hour, without success.

alt text

Does exists a place where I can find video or hints how to get 3 stars in every level? It would be nice also known which is the score I need to reach to get that stars.

Asked by Drake

Answer

I've always found 3-Star runs for every level i was in trouble with. Try searching for "Angry Birds Level X-Y 3 Star" on youtube if you have trouble with the X-Y level.

How do I get the Score Addict achievement in Angry Birds?

Question

I recently finished getting three stars in all stages across all three worlds of Episode 1 in Angry Birds. I have approximately 3 800 000 points. I need 4 000 000 points to get the Episode 1 - Score Addict achievment. (Or maybe I need an intervention?) There are 63 stages, which means I need to score an average of 3,000 more points per stage to get this achievment.

This doesn't seem possible.

Are there things I can do to get higher scores besides smashing more blocks? Multipliers? Smashing certain items?

Answer

There are a number of stages where you can exceed the three stars score by a healthy margin. Most of the time, if you used all of your available birds and still got three stars, you can improve your score by completing the level with fewer birds. Obviously, it's going to be difficult to improve some of your scores, but even adding 10 or 20 points to some of the levels will help.

Is Angry Birds deterministic?

Question

While trying to get 3 stars on the more complex levels (the ones with a lot of destructible entities) I noticed that even after playing the same level over 50 times, doing always the same thing, I've never seen the same final result. Something always goes differently.

Does the same input always result in the same output, or is there a random factor in there?

Answer

The algorithm is deterministic, but it's arguable that the overall result of launching a bird is effectively non-deterministic because it relies on (extraordinarily sensitive) user input.

To test the algorithm and the effect user input has on it, I used the following procedure:

  • Load the Google Chrome verison of Angry Birds
  • Load level 1-1
  • Pull the mouse back to a specific X-Y coordinate. (This was past the point of "full draw" for the bird.)
  • Release the bird, and wait for the game to reach a steady state.

To measure my X-Y coordinate, I opened a background Chrome window, and navigated it to this page. I aligned the two windows so that I could see the X and Y positions of the mouse while still able to cause something to happen when I released the bird. I aligned my mouse cursor with the lower left hand corner of the box around these two numbers, and then released. I noted the position of my mouse cursor then (as the display only updates when the mouse is not released and the cursor is over that window) and then noted the resulting score in Angry Birds. If you're having issues with exact mouse positioning, you might try an accessibility option offered by your OS, for instance, Mouse Keys on Windows.

I got the same score, so long as my cursor was in the exact same spot as it was on previous iterations.

Prior to coming up with an enhanced test rig that allowed me to measure my cursor's position to the pixel, I ran this experiment about 10 times, using a reference point in the background image of the game. I got scores by firing the first bird that varied between 8,000 and 11,000 points. Using the enhanced testing strategy, if I was off by a single pixel, I could expect score differences of anywhere between 150 and 500 points.

I will note that the cursor was beyond the edge of the game area, outside the browser window, far beyond the maximum distance the bird can be drawn back, and I still noticed differences when moving my cursor even a single pixel.

Further, I took screencaps for an extreme case where my cursor was on a different monitor than the game window, and ran several iterations where I kept my cursor in the same location, or moved it slightly. By my calculations (based on measuring distance from screencaps) the game was able to create a different result (score 32960 vs 31520) based on a one pixel difference in height (544 vs 545 pixels) over a distance of approximately 1,284 pixels of width. This works out to be an angular difference of 0.03 degrees.

I'd say that for any practical purposes, you can expect to employ the same general strategy on the same level repeatedly and expect wildly varying results. The level of sensitivity in the controls is so extreme that there's no practical way to get it to do the same thing twice. This is exacerbated by the fact that if you're playing on a touchscreen, it would be extraordinarily difficult to reproduce the same movements down to the individual pixel.

Valentine's Day version of Angry Birds?

Question

Could someone tell me more about the Valentine's Day version of Angry Birds: Seasons? I've only recently heard that it exists. What differentiates it from the other versions that are available?

Answer

The Valentine's Day Angry Birds was an update to Angry Birds Seasons. The update added more levels with a Valentine's Day theme. Currently there are two paid Angry Birds games out - Angry Birds and Angry Birds Seasons - the Valentine's Day is not a separate app.

How do you complete the Golden Egg level with all the sounds?

Question

One of the first Golden Egg levels you unlock is a level that has buttons with various birds, pigs and items on them. When you press the buttons, the appropriate sound effect from the game is played.

Generating the sound effects is fun, but is there something you can do to complete this level?

Answer

As usual Angry Bird's Nest has a guide

Golden Egg #4 is unlocked when you obtain 3 stars on all levels of Poached Eggs. The Angry Birds Soundboard is the first of the puzzle levels. Here’s what you need to do to unlock the star. Press the group of birds, slingshot, TNT, any top bird, and finally any bottom pig.

There's also two similar levels you could be referring to:

Golden Egg #12 is unlocked when you obtain 3 stars on all levels of Danger Above. The second soundboard puzzle level is all about the birds and their beautiful harmonies. To get the star press blue bird, red bird, black bird (with eyes closed), blue bird, then finally the green bird.

Golden Egg #17 is unlocked when you obtain 3 stars on all levels of The Big Setup. To get the star first fill in all the pigs then tap Big Brother so he opens his eyes. Now drag him to all the way to the right.

No. 17 was originally broken on the Android version, I believe, but doing the above has worked for a while now.

What is the “Golden Eggs” section in Angry Birds for?

Question

There's a screen called "Golden Eggs" in the game that has 7 icons in it... when you click the icons, it shows a picture of a golden egg with the icon. Anyone know what's going on here?

Answer

In different levels (or in special screens) there are "hidden" golden eggs. Once you touch or see them, they will be displayed in the "Golden Eggs" screen. When you touch them there you can play an extra level

Examples on where to find golden eggs:

  • At the end of the credit (just let them running through)
  • Just touch the sun in the level select screen
  • Complete all of the Worlds in Episode 1 with 3 Stars (same for episode 2)
  • If I remember correctly there is also a golden egg "hidden" in the help-section where the "Bomber-Birds" are explained
  • In one level there is chest beneath a mountain, just tap it once to get your golden egg
  • In other level there is a golden egg at the top right of the screen (only visible when zooming out). There you need a "yellow bird" to reach touch it in order to get your egg.

Make a search on Youtube for "Golden Egg Location", there are many videos showing the exact locations for each of them.

Can Mighty Eagle not achieve completion of a game board?

Question

I haven't purchased the Mighty Eagle but am curious if it's possible to throw the sardine tin in a spot in which the Mighty Eagle will not achieve completion of a board? Or does the sheer force of the eagle hitting inside or outside the game-play area always cause all pigs to be destroyed? I noticed the ground bounces.

Videos, which are my only source of information at this point, show how the Mighty Eagle destroys mostly everything on the first use but sometimes with a bit of structural integrity left behind, like some bits and pieces on the ground.

I expect the answer to this question will be short. :)

Answer

Yes, the Mighty Eagle kills all the pigs in the level, even if you throw it backwards off the screen. However, the eagle will not destroy all the blocks on the screen, as you said.

The Mighty Eagle is kind of like a mini game within Angry Birds that passes the level for you that you can only use every hour.

Source: I just tried it out on my iTouch.

What are the dice for in Angry Birds?

Question

I've noticed dice in some Angry Birds levels like the ones in the image below:

alt text

Do they have any significance? Are they related to the golden eggs by any chance?

Answer

Just some (pretty) flotsam - they don't play any part other than being an obstacle.

(You'll find lots more of such things in later levels - only items like the crates of dynamite and balloons are "active".)

Does tapping the Yellow bird sooner have a greater impact on the structure?

Question

If I click earlier to launch the extra speed for the yellow bird,
will it have a greater impact or does it matter?

Answer

It doesn't matter, as far as I know. There's two things to keep in mind with yellow birds:

  1. They are only effective against certain materials. They will rip through wood but seem to be particularly weak against ice.
  2. When you choose to click on the bird after launching it determines what kind of trajectory the bird will have; apart from going backwards, you can make a yellow bird strike a target at pretty much any angle.

What does getting the Chrome icon in Angry Birds Chrome Edition do?

Question

I played the Chrome version of Angry Birds. In level 3-7, there is a Chrome icon that you can get. I got it and it became big and it disappeared.

I didn't beat the level on the first try, but the chrome icon is not there anymore when I attempt to finish this level.

Did I get a bonus or something else? Did I miss something by failing the level after hitting the icon?

Answer

This unlocks the sixth "Chrome Dimension Level". So yeah, you got a bonus level :). The Chrome Dimension appears as an episode (set of levels) in the main menu area of the game.

Check out another of my answers if you want to see the locations of the other Chrome Dimension pickups and how to get them.

How to reach 100% total destruction with the Mighty Eagle in Angry Birds?

Question

I recently purchased the Mighty Eagle in Angry Birds for iPhone. To use him, you toss out a can of sardines and the Eagle swoops down to retrieve it, destroying everything in it's path, including all the pigs. If the Eagle destroys everything, you get a feather (you're rated on a percentage scale, e.g. 85% destroyed, 93% destroyed, etc.). Get enough feathers and you earn some achievements. I've been able to earn a few feathers, but haven't figured out what has to happen to get to 100%. Everytime I've earned 100%, there are usually some wood/glass/stone pieces leftover.

What criteria does the game use to measure the amount of destruction the Mighty Eagle has wreaked?

Answer

A simple way would be to keep trying till you destroy everything. Note that you can use some of the other birds before using the Eagle!

However there is a "4-stars" score for each level, invisible to you. (See: Eagle Score on this AngryBirdsNest post). You have to reach that score, by destroying most of the stuff with the eagle, to get 100%. The percentage of that score you get is the percentage shown to you.

Spoiler:

Check out this YouTube video for an example of how to get 100%.

How can I open the chest in 1-8 of Chrome version?

Question

I have tried other instructions I found, like clicking and typing "OPEN", but nothing seems to work. How can I unlock the chest?

Answer

You can't open the chest at all in the chrome version: you have to use your birds to hit randomly placed chrome balls, in some levels. The first one is in level 1-16, and you need to zoom out all the way to see it, on this little floating island. Also in level 1-18, zoom out to find that at the top of the mound there is a chrome ball.

Where are the Chrome Dimension pickups in Chrome.Angrybirds?

Question

The browser-based verison of Angry Birds seems to have an extra suite of levels you can unlock if you find and hit a google chrome logo within a level with a bird.

There appear to be 7 levels in total (so far), and while I've unlocked #3 and #6, I'd like to unlock the others as well.

Answer

Angry Birds Nest has a guide, as usual. Summarized below:

Chrome Dimension Level 1 unlocked in Poached Eggs Level 1-16
To unlock this level zoom out and shoot a yellow bird up to the ledge in the sky.

Chrome Dimension Level 2 unlocked in Poached Eggs Level 1-18
The logo is on top of the cliff to the far right. Zoom out and nail it with a yellow bird.

Chrome Dimension Level 3 unlocked in Poached Eggs Level 1-20
If you zoom out you’ll see the Chrome logo swaying in the breeze above you. Time it right and victory is yours!

Chrome Dimension Level 4 unlocked in Poached Eggs Level 2-4
Zoom out and you’ll see the Chrome logo way over yonder behind them bolders.

Chrome Dimension Level 5 unlocked in Poached Eggs Level 2-20
This one is a bit tricky! If you zoom out you’ll see the logo on the far right behind a tall wall. The best way to get this one is with the white bird. Launch it at the very last pig and drop the egg bomb right on top if him. The explosion should be enough to snag it!

Chrome Dimension Level 6 unlocked in Poached Eggs Level 3-7
Dude! It’s right there in front of the slingshot. Bounce red bird off the structure, but don’t pull the slingshot back all the way or you’ll overshoot it.

Chrome Dimension Level 7 unlocked in Poached Eggs Level 3-14
Zoom out and you’ll see the logo nestled in the nook behind the slingshoot. Shoot a red bird every so gingerly backwards to hit it.

Is there a way to disable the Mighty Eagle icon?

Question

The new (today!) version of Angry Birds (at least on iPhone) offers the help of a new character: the Mighty Eagle.

If you fail twice a level, the Mighty Eagle icon appears close to the Pause icon.
Clicking on that ME icon brings the Apple payment screen, so that you can get the Mighty Eagle to help you on that level (never tried, but seemingly it crashes the whole pigs construction and - I guess - you get a 3 stars by giving 0.99 cents).

The things is, to get 3 stars by playing normally, requires to reload the level a number of times! Making that ME icon to appear all the time, and I don't want to pay - cheat - in order to get the 3 stars...

Question: Is there a way to prevent that Mighty Eagle icon to appear on the screen?

It takes quite some place, and the screen is already pretty busy...
And while I don't intend to use that ME option, the icon is anyway available from the Pause / Restart screen.

Answer

As of now with the current version (v 1.5.0), No, there doesn't appear to be any permanent way to remove the Mighty Eagle icon from ever showing.

From what I saw, it shows up after the 3rd or 4th replay of a level. If you click on the icon, and then close it with the X, it will disappear, but then it shows back up on the 3rd or 4th replay of the level. I tried running in airplane mode as well, with the same results. There don't appear to be any menu settings allowing it to be removed or moved to another area on the screen.

Angry Birds: score is always 3,977,990

Question

I played all (available) levels of Angry Birds Summer PigNic and always get 3,977,990 as a score, for all levels (score displayed top right side).

Please see the screenshot below (today's level)

Summer PiGnic 1-11

The score takes about 3 mn (three minutes) to be displayed - counting from 1 to 3,977,990.

What does that score mean? Is it be a bug or a kind of limit feature?

Answer

I believe that's your highest score so far for a set of levels, presumably the Trick or Treat levels. As for why it shows and counts it every time ... that's either a bug or a really dumb decision made by Rovio. It doesn't happen on the Android version.

Note that the highscore for the level is shown below it on the yellow tab, and the current score below and left of that on the green area.
