What are some basic strategies for multiplayer in the original Modern Warfare?

Question

I'm very new to all things Xbox Live, I hope you'll treat me nicely!

I enjoy Halo on Xbox Live (even tho I'm really bad at it!) so I thought I would try out Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare on Xbox Live. However, it's really difficult to understand what's going on.

How am I supposed to know who is on my team and who is on the other team? Halo is easy, red and blue (or other colours) - but in Modern Warfare, everyone just looks the same.

Any tips on how to get started? There's no help or anything! It's just straight in and you're by yourself.

Any tips would be brilliant, thanks.

Answer

Call of Duty can be a very hectic multiplayer First Person Shooter.

When it comes to identifying friendly players from enemy players, a name highlights over their head when you are looking at them. If they are on the enemy team, this name will be red, and if they are on your team, this name will be green.

On top of this, there are UAV's (Unmanned Arial Vehicles) which players may call in when they have managed to kill 3 enemies without dying. These will show a little minimap which will display everyone's location on either hardcore or normal servers. (hardcore servers remove the Heads Up Display and any information like ammo reserves)

Here, you can see members of the OpFor team:

They are always wearing dark coloured clothing, and wear hats or headdresses that are red.

In the first screenshot, you can also see that the UAV map is active, (top left corner) indicating where your teammates are (green arrows) and where your enemies are (red dots).

Here, you can see members of the American team:

Their clothing is light in colour; what may be considered 'desert cammo'. They wear helmets.

You can once again see that the UAV is active, and showing where your friendly soldiers are VS the enemy soldiers. It also displays where the helicopter is located, and whether or not it is friendly. (friendlies are always green, enemies are always red on the UAV, including helicopters or airstrikes)

Call of Duty 4 consists of a few game modes.

  • Free-for-all means that it's every man for himself; you shoot people no matter what clothing they are wearing.
  • Team Deathmatch means that you simply shoot people on the opposite team, and try to beat the enemy team's score.
  • Capture the Flag involves grabbing a flag from the enemy base, and bringing it all the way back to your base.
  • Headquarters involves capturing a location on the map and holding it for as long as possible. This location changes, so you need to capture as many as you can.
  • Domination involves capturing and holding as many locations on the map as possible. There are always 3 persistent locations your team can capture.
  • Search and Destroy has no respawns. You are either on the defending team, or the attacking team. Attackers try to plant a bomb and set it off at a bomb site, defenders need to prevent the attackers from blowing up the bomb site.
  • Sabotage is similar to Search and Destroy, except there are respawns, and both sides have an objective to blow up, and an objective to defend. There is also one single bomb which can be dropped and picked up by the enemy team.

If you are new, I suggest avoiding 'Hardcore' servers, as you do not get a minimap, and your health is 40% of what it is in a normal match, so you will die much faster if you aren't quick on the trigger.

If everything is too fast for you though, a hardcore server can have it's advantages. People generally pace themselves slower on hardcore because they can die much faster if they run around without checking corners and being careful. It means that it shouldn't be as hectic, but you will die easier.

What happens when the Call of Duty 4 - Modern Warfare solo campaign is beaten on a higher difficulty?

Question

I played through and beat the solo campaign of Call of Duty 4 - Modern Warfare on the Recruit difficulty when I first purchased the game a long time ago. I vaguely remember the game telling me to try beating it on a higher difficulty. Do you get a multiplayer perk or something?

Asked by cowgod

Answer

As far as I know, the only difference is (on 360, possibly on PS3 too) there is an achievement for beating the game on one of the top two difficulty settings, and several achievements for beating groups of missions on the top difficulty setting.

Prestige Transfer after starting MW3

Question

I realise that I can get prestige tokens in MW3 for having previously prestiged in MW2/BlackOps, but after playing MW3 for a while can I now go back to the earlier games and prestige in them again to get more prestige tokens?

Answer

You don't get prestige tokens for each prestige rank you have. You get a prestige token from having gone prestige in a previous game (so 2nd prestige in MW2 buys you no more prestige tokens then 10th prestige).

However, if you haven't gone prestige in a previous game (Modern Warfare, MW2, World at War, or Black ops), you can go back and prestige to gain an additional token.

Hope this helps!

Prestige transferring from Modern Warfare 1 & 2?

Question

One of my friends told me that you get special unlocks in Modern Warfare 3 if you went prestige in the first two.

Is this true? If so what sort of unlocks are we talking about?

Answer

Modern Warfare 3 features the Prestige Shop. Prestige you've performed in a previous Call of Duty games (MW1, World at War, MW2, Black Ops) earns you a single prestige token per game.

Prestige tokens can be spent in the shop to unlock things like an additional custom classes, special emblems and titles, and numerous other features.

Full list (from here):

  • Extra custom class (up to 5 extra classes for a total of 10 max)
  • Double XP (2 hours in-game time)
  • Double weapon XP (2 hours in-game time)
  • Regular Package (Callsign Title and Emblem available to those with an extra token lying around)[2]
  • Unlock Gear (can be weapons, equipment, perks)(Available at 1st Prestige)
  • Hardened Package (Callsign Titles and Emblems)
  • Veteran Package (Callsign Titles and Emblems, unlocked after 10th Prestige)
  • Reset All Stats (Availble at 10th Prestige)

Unexpected Blast in Call of Duty 4

Question

I'm playing Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, level No Fighting In The War Room. I read a lot of walkthroughs, but couldn't solve the problem.

First of all, you start as Soap MacTavish, with your teammates: Captain Price, SSgt Griggs, and Cpl Miller. The latter is is not mentioned in any walkthorugh I saw. He is a real coward, and engages in almost no fight. Despite this, he gets killed no matter how I try to save his life.

Anyway, I continued the level till I reached a corridor where crates blocked the road. There were two entries to my left and right, each leading to parallel side corridors. I entered each of them and killed every enemy. Oddly enough, neither Captain Price nor SSgt Griggs followed me.

After that, killing all enemies in side corridors, I took a path leading to the main corridor (bypassing the wooden crates which blocked the road). At the moment I set foot on the passage joining the side corridor to the main one, an alarm set off.

I sprinted to the main corridor, meeting Price & Griggs! They were running towards some giant door. No matter how fast I ran, just before entering the door, something exploded, and I was dead!

This explosion is not mentioned in any walkthrough. I think it might be related to Cpl Miller's death, but I'm not sure.

Any ideas?

Answer

One thing you should always keep in mind with Call of Duty games is that the action sequences are completely scripted. Basically, what that means is the game will keep throwing enemies at you or will otherwise not progress the level until you initiate a specific action. In this case, you are faced with this corridor:

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare - Corridor filling with flammable gas

The corridor is filling up with flammable gas. Once you pass a specific point in this corridor, shortly after exiting one of the side corridors, Captain Price will say Go! Go! Go! This is your queue that the corridor will be detonated by the opposition. If you listen carefully, you can hear a countdown on the overhead speaker in Russian. You need to make a mad dash to the end of this corridor and exit it before Captain Price shuts the door. He will shout out Move! Move! right before he shuts the door.

I would suggest sprinting for this door as soon as you exit one of the side corridors and make it through the door before Captain Price shuts it, thus:

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare - Exiting corridor before Captain Price shuts the door

Unable to connect to activision matchmaking error 33

Question

I got the following error when I try to play the Call of Duty (multiplayer mode):

Unable to connect to activision matchmaking error 33.

Anybody have any information about this problem?

Thank you.

Answer

This error is generally related to the network being down, or the game servers being down. The only real solution to it is to wait and try again later.

The other issue that people have had with this error is a problem with their own router. You may need to turn off UPnP on your router.
