Noble map pack for Halo Reach is not showing up in game

Question

I downloaded the Noble map pack when it was first released and although Xbox live says that I have downloaded it, its not showing up in game under the DLC section of matchmaking. Its only showing the new one which I haven't purchased yet.

Any ideas where it could be hiding? I have downloaded it for a second time to see if it made any difference.

Answer

In the last playlist update (pushed out on 3rd May 2011) the Noble and Defiant map packs were merged: Halo Forum Update Changelist Post.

This means that the Defiant playlist that appears under the DLC does actually include the Noble maps as well. Unfortunately the Defiant map pack DLC is required to be able to use this playlist. One solution for you could be to purchase the Defiant map pack, however, the Noble map pack is not a requirement for this playlist, which means that you will only get Noble maps on the voting screen when all of the players have the Noble map pack too.

If you don't want to buy the Defiant map pack, then the only other option for you is to use the normal playlists. The Noble maps have been integrated into the normal playlists according to the November 30th 2010 Changlist. This means that you should theoretically still be able to play the Noble maps, however these will only appear on the voting screen when all of the connected players also have the Noble map pack, but as you have probably noticed, the chances of this happening are pretty slim.

This quote is from the Bungie.net Noble Map Pack FAQ:

Many other playlists will contain DLC maps as well, but since you are not gated from entry to these playlists by having DLC, you could match with people who don’t have the maps. If that happens, you will not get them as voting options for that session.

You may be able to improve the chances of you playing one of the Noble maps by using the playlists that require less players. I think that if all connected players do have the Noble DLC, then at least one Noble map will show up in the voting options.

What do the Pestilence and Inclement Weather armor effects actually do?

Question

What do the Pestilence and Inclement Weather armor effects in Halo: Reach actually do?

Asked by Harpal

They only have an effect on the appearance of the character during gameplay. Pestilence makes a diseased looking cloud appear around the Spartan's head and Inclement Weather makes the Spartan appear to be engulfed in a lightning storm with the cloud near their head.

Halo Reach Credits custom games

Question

I was at a LAN party at one of my friends house last night where we played 50+ custom game matches. Mainly Infection. After every matches was over, me and only one of my other buddies got only 50 or less credits. While the other 7 people in the group got 100 - 1000 credits every match. I was top player on several occasions and still only got 50 or less credits. I even had more medals in a few matches compared to my friends that were getting more points. I figure there may be a glitch because me and the one other buddy were on a separate hub than the rest of the group, but we still played the matches just fine.

Why was I not receiving 100-1000 credits like everyone else?

Asked by TrickyM66

Answer

This is only a theory, but were the ones that were getting reduced credits xbox live profiles?

If a profile is an online one (AKA a gold subscription I believe) then they work on a different credit scale than that of an offline account. This is done so that offline accounts can experience all the joys of the armory easier, and online accounts can't abuse offline play to max out credits easy.

This is what I'm basing this theory on:

On a similar note, I’ve been seeing some chatter about the prospect of mass quantity credit dumps that can be earned through offline play in various game modes. Some of the laziest among us are no doubt already plotting out their path of least resistance, thinking of ingenious new ways to rubber band a controller to achieve a Zen like state of ridiculous effortlessness.

Not so fast. When you escort your offline profile into the wonderful world of Xbox LIVE, our servers will identify your newly connected status and instantly notify you that our online credit scale operates on a completely different level. (That fizzle sound you’re hearing is probably your boosters running out of fuel in an oxygen starved environment. Don’t look down, RocketMan.)

If you choose to remain offline with your decked out profile, you get to keep your ducats and your duds with no questions asked. But should you opt to take this party online, your credits will be reduced significantly and any Armory items that you had previously earned (for which you no longer meet the minimum online credit or rank requirements) will be righteously revoked.

Of course, the credit reduction that occurs when you make the move into cyberspace is completely by design. For players without a connection to the outside world, the system is simply accelerating the credits being awarded to allow them to experience the Armory at a realistically achievable (but decidedly lonely) offline pace. For those who opt for a more social experience, the grind is a little more protracted, but still profoundly fun.

How does pummeling work?

Question

In Halo:Reach, how much damage does a beat-down, or "pummel" do in multiplayer? At what point can I be guaranteed that a beat-down will kill the opponent?

Asked by TeeOh

Answer

From my experience, whenever I melee an opponent who doesn't have any shields, the melee always kills them. If you melee when they still have shields, then only their shields are removed (thus taking a max of two melee attacks to kill an opponent).

Edit: The Bungie Weekly Update for September 24 has more information about how melee attacks and headshots work in Halo Reach. The basic idea is the same: melee will destroy any remaining shields (and nothing else), while a melee to a shieldless opponent will kill him.

System Link fails

Question

I recently bought a brand new xbox 360 slim and have transferred all of my data to it. It also has an xbox live account that gets played quite frenquently. My old xbox is still operable and in fact gets used by my brothers. We both have copies of Call of Duty World at War and would like to system link to play zombies with 4 people. However when we system link via direct ethernet connection or via router connection, the the joining xbox never sees the games being hosted by the host xbox.

I have tried changing which xbox is the host. I have swapped out ethernet cables to see if any are bad. I have tried several different routers to see if that changes the connection.

The weird part is whenever we system link with Halo Reach we have no problems connecting and playing together. The only thing I can think of is that the newer xbox has been updated via xbox live and is not compatible with the version of WAW or the old xbox.

Does anyone know why this is happening or how to fix it?

Answer

Chances are good this has to do with the version of CoD: WAW you're both running - since you can link up to play Halo: Reach, it's not an issue with hardware or networking. This is especially likely if you connect regularly to XBox Live on the newer XBox 360, but the older XBox 360 has not connected in a while.

Your options at this point are to clear all the software updates off both Xboxes (not recommended - you have to clear everything), or to get the older XBox to update to the newest version.

The second option is likely less inconvenient. If you go with it, you can either connect that older XBox to XBox Live using a different Gamertag (either Gold or Silver should work), or go through the following steps (using a single Gamertag):

  1. Plug the older XBox into a network
  2. Recover your Gamertag (make sure you've connected to XBox Live with that Gamertag recently, as you'll lose all offline achievements that haven't been submitted yet).
  3. Start up Call of Duty: World at War
  4. Update to the newest version when prompted
  5. At this point, the two XBoxes should be able to link up
  6. Recover your Gamertag on your newer XBox, so that you can continue to use it as normal

Given the time investment it's probably easier to use a Silver Gamertag - it's free, and signing up from scratch (assuming you don't have one already) is probably less time-consuming that two Gamertag Recoveries.

Can I use the Halo: Anniversary map packs with Halo: Reach?

Question

I purchased Halo: Anniversary recently and was told by a friend that the maps (which run off the Reach engine) can be downloaded for free for access from within Reach, since I own both Reach and Anniversary. I could not find online how to do this, so is this possible? And if so, how?

Answer

When you buy Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary, you get two components: the original campaign remastered, along with 6 multiplayer maps and 1 Firefight map using the Halo: Reach engine.

If don't own Halo: Reach, you can only play the maps included with Anniversary. There is a Multiplayer option on the title screen of Anniversary that boots up a minimal version of Halo: Reach - namely, only multiplayer with only Anniversary playlists available.

If you bought a new copy of Anniversary, it should have included a code that allows you to download the Anniversary Map Pack for Halo: Reach. Once you have done this, these maps work like any other map pack for Halo: Reach - they are available to play (whether in a custom game or in matchmaking) when you run Halo: Reach.

If you didn't buy Anniversary new (or only want the maps, and not the remastered campaign), the Anniversary Map Pack can be downloaded for 1200MS points.

Halo:Reach Matchmaking Campaign

Question

In some of the release notes Bungie noted that Halo Reach will have campaign matchmaking. I'm assuming this meant you could play the campaign with other random people on Xbox Live, versus just those on your friends list.

Is this the case, and if so, how do I access it?

Answer

To add a bit about what tzenes said: It is confirmed that Bungie plans to release the campaign matchmaking some time in the future:

"If you're looking for campaign matchmaking in Halo: Reach, sit tight. In an effort to keep your first campaign experience spoiler free, we've decided to wait for a bit before we deploy the campaign playlist.

Halo: Reach and Call of Duty: Back Ops Controller mapping

Question

Is it possible to have the same button/controller layout for Halo: Reach and Call of Duty: Black Ops? I have a lot of experience with Reach and only started playing Black Ops. I am having difficulty switching between the controls and can't seem to find a common scheme which fits both!

Answer

Unlike most PC games, console games provide a number of different control configurations rather than allowing the user to bind specific actions to specific buttons.

I doubt it's possible to have the same control configuration on both games if you can't find them among the sets already provided.

Can I use 4 Xbox 360 consoles in System Link mode on the same wireless network?

Question

I was looking to have a Halo: Reach party with 16 people (4 Xbox 360s) at my house, but in talking to a friend, I became worried when he said he was not able to connect through the (Existing) wireless network to play vs other XBox 360s. Can you run 4 xBoxes off the same wireless network and have them connect to (local) network games or can this only be done with a wired hub? If so, is there any special setup I need to do first?

Answer

Wireless works fine for Xbox System Link. Microsoft's help page for system link states:

A system link cable or crossover cable for each console, an Ethernet hub or switch with enough open ports to connect the consoles together, or a wireless networking adapter for every console.

The more recent version of the Xbox 360 has a wireless adapter built-in. It's safe to assume that if you can play on Xbox Live wirelessly at home, that it has the correct hardware to play in a wireless system link setup with other Xbox 360s.

If you have a wireless network already in place where you plan to play, you'll have to configure the wireless settings on the Xbox 360s to connect to the wireless network wherever you're getting together, but otherwise no additional setup should be required. You can also mix and match using the wireless adapters on some consoles and connecting via an ethernet cable on other consoles, so long as they're all connecting to the same router/network. For instance, you might put one Xbox near the wireless router and use an ethernet cable for that one, and then have 3 others spread out in the area connecting to the router via wireless.

The Xbox 360 also supports an "ad-hoc" wireless mode where you don't need a wireless router, but in this configuration you'll only be able to play with 4 Xbox 360s if they all have wireless adapters.

In the second round of Invasion: Spire, where does the shotgun spawn?

Question

In the second round of Invasion: Spire, when the Spartans are trying to capture the points at the bottom of the spire, I have seen people using the shotgun, but none of the loadouts have it so it must spawn on the map. Does anyone know where the shotgun spawn is for this round?

Answer

If you're coming from the Spartan spawn, the shotgun is on the far right side, leaned up against a metal fence. There's also a rocket launcher, nearest the left spawn, and a sniper rifle up against the rocks near the middle spawn.

In Halo games, whats the best way to make use of marines?

Question

In the halo games since halo 2 you've been able to swap weapons with allies. I sometimes will give better weapons to the marines I'm with in the hope that they'll be more useful. For example I'll take away their assault rifles in favor of battle rifles or sniper rifles. Or I'll try to get the passenger in the warthog to have a rocket launcher.

Is this useful or am I just wasting my time? Whats the best way to make use of the marines? Are there strategies that make good use of them? Or for the most part is it a waste of time to worry about them?

Answer

If you need a particular weapon, like a Shotgun, Assault Rifle, Battle Rifle etc, you can swap your current weapon with a marine to take his. So marines can be a good way to get weapons in certain situations.

Additionally, a marine will carry any weapon you give him until he is killed, or you swap with him again. This also means that marines can be used to transport weapons. Say you know that you're going to want a Sniper Rifle you've found later on in a level, but you don't want to carry it with you in between. If you give it to a marine, you can carry two other weapons, and then simply swap with the marine again once decide you need the Sniper Rifle, provided that the marine has survived to that point in the mission.

An element of this that can be used to even greater advantage, is that marines don't use any ammunition. What this means, is that even if the weapon you give to one only has one round of ammunition left in it, the marine will be able to use it without limit. This also means that while transporting a weapon for you, the marine is free to use it without expending any of your ammunition.
Important to note here is that you can't give a marine an empty weapon.

In short, if you've got a decent weapon that's almost out of ammunition, give it to a marine; while the marines may not be able to operate weaponry as effectively as most players, you will still likely benefit more from having the desired weapon as an asset to your mission in the hands of a marine than you would if you had depleted it yourself and thrown it away.

They can also be used to refill ammunition on a weapon that both you and a marine are carrying. As long as you have at least 2 extra (and unique) weapons nearby, you can swap your low-ammo weapon for one of them, then swap it to the marine for his weapon. At this point, you should be holding the marine's weapon, and you need to switch it for the second unwanted weapon, making sure that you drop it at least a few meters away from your original weapon (if you don't want to collect its ammo and completely deplete it). Then pick up your original, low-ammo weapon again (dropping the second unwanted weapon) and give it to the marine, then finally switch the first unwanted weapon for the higher-ammo one you left on the ground.

This process is actually much simpler than it sounds, and you should be able to figure it out easily on your own while playing.

Because of the fact that marines don't use ammunition, I always try to give my marines certain weapons once I've almost depleted them (particularly explosives). In order starting with most desirable:

  • Fuel Rod Gun/Cannon
  • Rocket Launcher
  • Brute Shot
  • Needler
  • Sniper Rifle
  • Beam Rifle

Depending on the circumstance, you may want to give your marines different weaponry, but to be brutally honest, I almost never really notice their "support" unless they're equipped with one of the above weapons.

In regards to the Warthog, I also often try to make sure that the marine in the passenger seat is equipped with a Rocket Launcher or Fuel Rod Gun/Cannon. This seems to be easily the most effective strategy in most situations. However, in rare circumstances you may want to equip your passenger with a weapon that can be fired more accurately, or rapidly.

How do you perform extended assassinations in Halo: Reach?

Question

Is there some special combination of buttons to perform the new extended assassinations in Halo: Reach? Like where you knife someone? I can only seem to do they typical Halo behind the back assassination when pushing RB.

Answer

You need to sneak up behind them and hold the melee button which is usualy the right bumper.
