CHAD (world 2 boss) level bugged in Super Meat Boy on OSX

Question

I get the key at the beginning of the level, but the stage doesn't start: the locks open but the screen stays fixed. The boss jumps up and down, always in the center of the screen.

Is this a known bug, somehow work-aroundable? I guess I could copy the savegame to a windows box and play there this level, hoping it works?

Answer

Apparently it's a known, and so far ignored, problem.

One kind-of workaround is to set the graphics to -ultralowdetail, which for some weird reason usually solves this (revert to normal details later, because the ultralow are really ultralow and horrible as it sounds).

Sometimes, even with higher details, if you go at one end of the screen and then another end, and do a little jump, the level starts scrolling. It's not much good, since it increases way too much startup time and frustration.

How to beat level 6-5 Omega in Super Meat Boy?

Question

I've got up to level 6-5 Omega in Super Meat Boy. I've tried beating it dozens times now, but I fail at the same place. And my fingers hurt. :)

How can I safely go down after I get the key in this level?

I can "easily" play the level up to that key, and then I die when trying to go down. I don't even know what challenges await me after I get the key.

Answer

It is possible to simply drop from the Key's platform back to the ground below, avoiding the walls entirely. It is also possible (and perhaps intended) to simply wall hop between the two walls(though if you haven't been playing the dark world levels, you may not have had as much practice with the precise timing).

Here's a video displaying a successful run of Omega -- and remember to not give up! Getting to the key is the hard part!

What are the cryptic Steam Super Meat Boy achievements and what do the names mean?

Question

It seems like the following cryptic achievements are only available on the Steam version, not XBLA.

  • N#7*<1!23
  • &*>?1$
  • (=+66&1$
  • ^**5%_=+12
  • *|-0&&
  • N&8^2^%$1``

The "description" on all of them is: 8*(@31^

Bonus (bounty) points:

Are the names/characters truly random or is there some pattern? Can they be translated into something sane?

Answer

Mana's guess is correct. I can confirm that after beating Level -1 (in The Forest) I got the N#7*<1!23 achievement. Six worlds, six negative levels, six achievements.

See this question on how to reach the levels in the first place.

How to take those big side way jumps in super meat boy?

Question

I'm somewhat stuck in the last but one level (Level 6-5 "Omega") of Super Meat Boy. I'm pretty sure I've taken similar jumps throughout the game before, but this jump is near the end of the level, and I haven't got a clue what magical key combination I should press in order to fly away that far from the side, and back again over the saw blade.

difficult jump

Maybe I should zig-zag up, bouncing back from the platform where SMB is standing (uncomfortably) on?

Answer

While it's certainly possible to do a big wall jump like that (you'll need to in some of world 7), in this particular instance, you don't need to do a vertical jump at all -- the sawblade can be cleared with a horizontal jump from the platform to the left. See this video for a demonstration:

Restarting level in Super Meat Boy

Question

Is there a key to restart a level in Super Meat Boy?

Other than going back to level select and selecting it again, I mean.

(I'm playing it on OSX/Steam, in case this matters)

Answer

There is no restart in Super Meat Boy other than killing yourself, or even finishing the level which will prompt you if you want to re-try the level. With how fast the game can load, however, this is almost as quick, if not, faster than any other game's restart.

How can I complete the last episode in Super Meat Boy?

Question

I can't get past the last episode. I'm reaching the end of the stage, but I just can't do it.

Are there any tips or tricks to beating this episode?

Answer

I don't know if it's the same level that you are talking about, but here the solution of the W-6 (Light World).

You can see the integral of the world 6. All stage are there.

Is Super Meat Boy really harder with a keyboard?

Question

While poking around on Youtube I found many commenters saying "yeah, now try that with a keyboard." The game itself, however, only seems to suggest a controller to keep the "feeling" of the game.

enter image description here

I played with the keyboard so far, and I'm 10 levels from completing world 5. Sure, my completion rates for worlds 2-5 are below 30% and I only have 11/100 bandages so far – I still do value my sanity – yet I'd rather think it's me not being good enough, than thinking I'm bringing artificial difficulty onto myself for not wanting to buy a controller.

The only gripe I have with the controls is that you need to release Space after having gained enough elevation before you can jump again by pressing Space again. I'm not sure using a smaller button, or a different finger, would make this any less frustrating however.

Is Super Meat Boy actually harder to play with a keyboard?

Answer

Super Meat Boy is harder to play with a keyboard.

Gamepads can detect how much you are pushing the control stick in a direction; there are partial actions. Jumping to the right with 30% of run speed is possible to do.

Keyboards only detect whether you're pressing a key or not; you are either performing an action or not. So if you want to jump to the right with 30% of run speed you have to tap the right key at a certain frequency to simulate what the gamepad would otherwise do for you. This is especially difficult with a less than perfectly responsive keyboard.

Buying a gamepad is worth it depending on your experience with PC platformers. The gamepad and keyboard have different mindsets, and having already played through a good chunk of Super Meat Boy with the keyboard you'll have to spend time switching to the gamepad mindset. If you're a long-time player of PC platformers this will prove a painful transition. If you're not, then getting a feel for the gamepad will happen after replaying a few levels and you'll find the game much easier.

What are those big floating things in Super Meat Boy called?

Question

I mean those floating corpses that chase Meat Boy about in the Chapter 5: Rapture.

Answer

I posed this question to Edmund McMillen, one of the creators of Super Meat Boy, and he answered that these enemies are called Oobs. There is even a level in the Cotton Alley world called Oobs' Revenge.

How much time do I have to spend in hell to earn the “Medium Well” achievement in Super Meat Boy?

Question

So, during the Steam Summer Sale 2011, Super Meat Boy was updated and has a new achievement: "Medium Well". It's description is only, "Spend as little time in hell as possible"

How do I earn this new achievement?

Unless I messed up with my calculator, the A+'s for each level in hell put you at a time total of 631.8 seconds.

Update: Super Meat Boy was later updated in 2011-07-20 and what was originally the "Medium Rare" achievement has now been renamed to "Medium Well".

Answer

The SMB team has said on Twitter that it counts a sum of the best play times in Hell.

From the Super Meat Boy Forums:

You must clear Hell, both light and dark world

The sum of your best times in Hell must be less than some threshold

Apparently, the threshold is 500 seconds.

What are the secret achievements in Super Meat Boy?

Question

Super Meat Boy has just been updated with new achievements, and though they are listed on the steam achievements page, they have no accompanying text on how to unlock them.\

The original secret achievements, the so-called cryptic, glitched achievements have already been identified elsewhere on this site.

Some, such as the "Rare, Medium, Medium Well, and Well Done" achievements seem similar to the "Medium Rare" achievement (added for the steam summer camp event).

Others, such as the "Well look at you!", "Seneca Falls", and the "Suffragette" achievement also have no unlock text, and they do not appear to be similar to existing achievements, either.

What do I have to do to earn these achievements?

Answer

The update notes say:

  • Added 4 more achievements along the same lines as the "Medium Rare" achievement added last week
  • Renamed "Medium Rare" achievement to "Medium Well"

Since they are along the same lines as the previous achievement, they mean the player should complete both the light world and the dark world of a chapter, and the sum of the best times for that chapter should be lower than some threshold. Here are the descriptions of each one:

  • Rare - Spend as little time as possible in The Forest (around 320 seconds)
  • Medium Rare - Spend as little time as possible in The Hospital (around 430 or 460 or 490 seconds)
  • Medium - Spend as little time as possible in The Salt Factory (around 570 seconds)
  • Medium Well - Spend as little time as possible in Hell (around 500 or 550 seconds)
  • Well Done - Spend as little time as possible in The Rapture (around 740 seconds or more)

About the old secret achievements:

  • Suffragette - Complete the light world of the Cotton Alley
  • Seneca Falls - Complete the dark world of the Cotton Alley
  • Well look at you! - Input the petaphile code to play with Tofu Boy

The achievement isn't called Medium Rare, it's called BBQ Boy.
Of course, then they change it to read Medium Rare after all just to spite me.

How to solve 5-4?

Question

What I do is, all while holding the running button:

  • Run off the platform and jump
  • Jump then hold jump for a little longer to climb that extra height
  • Jump off the wall onto the left.
  • Jump off the wall onto the right.
  • Reach slightly above the first repulser
  • Reach slightly above the second repulser
  • End up on the wall below Bandage Girl.

enter image description here

From there I'm stuck. If I try to jump back on the second repulser, I don't gain enough altitude to reach the ledge.

Am I screwing up with the double-repulser jump? Am I supposed to end up on that wall?

I could try using Commander Video's longer jumping capabilities, but with him I can't clear the second repulser jump, as the first doesn't gain him enough height. The other character I have is Headcrab, but it doesn't seem to be particularly useful for anything.

The A+ time is 13.5 and by the time I reach the opposite wall 6.5 seconds have elapsed, so I guess I'm not supposed to reach that ledge straight away after all. I still can't manage to pull this off however.

Answer

A quick youtube search pulled up the following video, which helps demonstrate what I'm about to tell you you need to do.

Basically, you shouldn't try to reach the wall under bandage girl, as your position on the wall there prevents you from getting enough vertical boost from the repulsor to safely clear the buzz saw. If you jump from the (safe) flat ground before the final repulsor, you can easily clear the buzzsaw, as the video shows.

Edit: Okay, now that you've posted a picture, I've misattributed the source wall of your frustrations. In that case, the answer is much simpler -- You're not supposed to end up on that wall. You need to get over the buzzsaw and inside the 2nd building from the repulsor.
