What does “ [Element] Power rises by X” do?

Question

When I am in battle, and I summon a spirit, after the attack has finished, I get a message saying "[Character's] [Element] power rises by [a number]".

What does this mean? Does that mean that they will have stronger attacks if they use that particular element/djinn when summoning? Or does it mean something else entirely?

Asked by Derpy Hooves

Answer

Simply put, it's a boost to psynergy, summons and element-based weapons of that element for the remainder of that battle. This answer can be found on this page and in this thread and in Krazer's comment below.

From the Golden Sun: Dark Dawn Manual under the section Battles (page 30 in my copy):

Elemental Power

This is the character's strength for each element. The higher the value, the greater the character's attack strength with that element.

When selecting a psynergy target, in the lower right corner, you will see the elemental power indicated. You can also check this value in your detailed status screen. Note that the increases due to djinn summoning will only last until the end of that battle.

Why am I flashing while walking?

Question

Sometimes when I am walking (outside of a town, on the world map), my character will flash white.

Does this mean anything? Or is it just a graphical glitch somewhere?

Asked by Derpy Hooves

Answer

It's those Djinns re-setting themselves. Looks like you've been putting them on quite the summoning routine.

Upon skovacs1's persuasion, I've added video documentation of this phenomenon:

After a bit of summoning, you'll notice at this interval that the Djinns are re-setting themselves.

How do get through Kolima Forest?

Question

I am trying to get through Kolima forest because there is apparently someone there I need to talk to. Problem is, it is a directional maze and I keep ending up back at the start, which really sucks.

How do I get through this maze? If Sveta was stil part of my party, I would use her psynergy but she left a while back.

Asked by Derpy Hooves

Answer

According to Blitz Knight Stunt's FAQ, you get through Kolima Forest by following your Venus Djinn guide whom you should see upon entering the forest. To follow them, you'll need to grow some vines and such.

If you aren't seeing them when you enter the forest, you haven't used the Hermes Water on the Dream Tree in Kolima Village yet.

Hopefully that's enough detail to not spoil too much. If not, please let me know in the comments or better still revise your question to better detail the state of where you are in the game that I may provide more precise directions to guide you through this obstacle.

How do I get this lazy guy to move?

Question

There is a guy in Kaocho who sits near a lily pad and complains he is feeling tired and doesn't want to do anything. I need him to move so I can get to the djinn near by, but I have no idea what to do.

Amiti says his powers might help me, so I tried using the Insight Glass - this just showed me a picture of a bun type thing. I have no idea what to do with this information.

How can I get this lazy guy out of my way?

Asked by Derpy Hooves

Answer

This particular guy wants a Kaocho dumpling:

enter code here

You can buy one in the food shop nearby:

(The video's in Italian... trying to find a better one :)

This shop will only be open after Amiti joins the party.

How do I use Grip?

Question

I am in the Konpa Ruins, and entered a room where I got a Grip Crystal, so apparently I can use Grip now with an Earth Adept.

Problem is, I don't see it in my list of Psynergy options.

How do I make it so I can use Grip?

Asked by Ashley Nunn

Answer

Make sure a Venus Adept has it equipped first.

Then, look for thin/long pole/spire-shaped things and "grip" them.

Do I need all the Dijinni to complete the game?

Question

The dijnni seem pretty important when it comes to fighting battles. I am trying to collect them all, but I am afraid I have missed at least one already, in an area that I cannot go back to.

If I have already missed one of the Dijinni, is it going to severely impact my ability to finish the game? Or am I okay to miss some of them?

Asked by Ashley Nunn

Answer

It is quite possible to finish the game without getting all the Djinni. When I went though the game, I thought I was being quite thorough about getting into all the nooks and crannies to find all of them. Imagine my surprise, by the end of the game, I was missing about a half-dozen or so. It didn't impact my ability at all to take out the end boss.

Obviously, you don't get all the stat increases or classes, but that's more for completeness's sake than any requirement for the end boss.

Plus, it would be pretty bad game design to require every Djinni to beat the game, and then go and ensure that some of them are missable, thereby making sure you can't finish the game.

What does mastering a weapon mean?

Question

Periodically, post-fight, I will get a message saying "Character so and so has mastered weapon such and such".

What does that mean? What sort of perks does mastering a weapon give, if any?

Asked by Ashley Nunn

Answer

You can't use unleash skills of weapons until you unlock them by filling the mastery bar. By maxing it out, you'll fully unlock the weapon. You can see the list of unleashes and which you have unlocked simply by inspecting the weapon.

(I believe a mastered weapon has a marginally higher unleash rate as well, but I'm really not sure about this.)

Do my emotional choices affect the story?

Question

I am playing Golden Sun: Dark Dawn and noticed that sometimes I need to give an emotional response to something that was said. Do these decisions affect anything ? Or are they purely aesthetic?

Asked by Ashley Nunn

Answer

I don't think the decisions really make a difference; they're just there to let you develop your character's identity a little. Pretty much the same things will happen regardless of how you respond, but it serves as a nice aesthetic touch.

If you want a reference, I quote the following from a review:

The player is allowed to "respond" at certain points with one of 4 emotional responses (positive, enthusiastic, negative, or angry). While this has little impact on the actual game, it adds a bit of the player's personality into the otherwise mysterious silent character.
