How to make Alien Swarm dedicated server to automatically say announcements?

Question

What I want is to make my server to automatically print invitation text to every player when he connects my server. Or I want my server to say a message in fixed time interval. How do I do it?

Do I need to use SourceMod for this? If yes, how do I make it using SourceMod?

Asked by DIMEDROLL

Answer

It is needed to install SourceMod and Advertisements plugin. It has all the documentation. Here is an example of advertisements.txt:

"Advertisements"
{
    "1"
    {
        "type"      "S"
        "text" "Please download the latest addon maps: www.moddb.com/games/alien-swarm/addons/alien-swarm-mappack-12"
    "flags"     "z"
    }
}

dota 2 matchmaking server priority

Question

In dota 2 when you select more than 1 server region and start the matchmaking,the background image has only US west server colored,is that actually a map bug or does the game really search the US west server first and then other locations or is it all grouped together?

Asked by Arremer

Answer

As far as I can tell this is merely a visual glitch; the background image does not correctly reflect your selected regions. Accurate feedback is available from the options sidebar, which properly lists the selected regions.

Can I host a Minecraft server from an iPad/iPod?

Question

My iPad is, by far, faster than my laptop. Would I be able to instead host a Minecraft server on my iPad?

EDIT: I found that the iPad 2 (which I have) only has 512MB of RAM. However, I wanted to do this since whenever I get on my own server, I gets lag messages in the console. I figured that if I run it on an iPad, I could go onto my server while running various programs (Chrome, recording software, etc.) with little lag, at least compared to hosting it on my laptop which has 2GB RAM that runs MANY various programs that may or may not be crucial to my computer.

Asked by Jonny B

Answer

Under normal conditions, you simply can't. You can't use the Desktop version of Minecraft on iPad because you can't run the Java files on iPad. A non-jailbroken iPad will never allow Java to run like that.

Some people are trying to get this to work with jailbroken iPads which can run java. It's still not working, and only an iPad 3 would yield remotely acceptable performance for a low-end server. I strongly recommend against trying unless you're doing this as a "because I can" project.

If you mean for Minecraft Pocket Edition, you can just play locally with other MPE players over Wifi. It's really easy, but it's not a "Minecraft Server" in the same sense and Desktop players won't be able to access your "server".

Is it possible to turn a Minecraft single player map into multi-player server?

Question

I've got some funky minecraft maps that I'd like to share with my friends. However, they're, more often than not, far away and unable to stop by my computer and see what I've wrought.

I was wondering if there was a way to transform a singleplayer map into a multiplayer one, such that I could share my singleplayer creations remotely?

Asked by Raven Dreamer

Answer

Yes, just copy the world you want to share to minecraft server directory, delete old world named "world", and rename the directory of your single player world to "world". You can insert single player world into SMP.

What's With the Server Connection Error That Shows a Bunch of HTML?

Question

So, as of yesterday, I've been unable to connect to any of four different servers, which work fine for others. Of the 4, three give me the following error:

HTML?

What's up with this? Why is it showing HTML?

Asked by GnomeSlice

Answer

The technical reason it's showing html? The client probably expects an error message in plaintext that explains why the login failed. The client is receiving an actual html document and doesn't do any checking before it loads all that text into the spot where the error message should be.

This could be any number of issues where your client is getting back html from something between you and the minecraft server (such as a network security layer or wifi login page, like Amazed suggested) or the minecraft server itself producing 404, 500 or any number of other error pages for any number of reasons.

Considering that it's happening on 3 of 4 servers, maybe they haven't upgraded to 1.5 yet?

How do you host a multi-player survival game in Minecraft?

Question

I've downloaded all the required files in order to host an on-line multi-player Minecraft game on my computer, and successfully made a server. However, it seems that I can only make games in free build mode, where you have unlimited resources to build with. I prefer the survival mode where you have limited hp, there's a day/night cycle, mobs spawn, etc (the registered user version, not the classic free version).

Is it possible to host a survival multi-player game, whether on-line or local?

EDIT: Given Minecraft is undergoing huge changes please update your answers as appropriate.

Answer

You need to download the multiplayer survival server. It can be found at http://minecraft.net/download.jsp at the bottom of the page.
