How are money and experience divided in Dead Island's co-op mode?

Question

Are money and experience divided evenly when you play co-op? I'm playing with two friends of mine, and we'd like to try to stay within roughly the same level of each other.

So far, it looks like you get more experience when you tag a zombie, which is frankly, really annoying, especially seeing as we all have different weapon focuses and it can be hard to get a hit in on lower level zombies when they die so quickly from 3 people curb stomping them at once.

How exactly does this work?

Asked by FAE

Answer

It works quite poorly. Money distribution is reasonable, but there are a great many ways that XP disparity can exist and the game's mechanics seem to only exist to further this disparity. There are some mods that have been developed to try and force equalized XP distribution, but even then they do not cover all cases and XP disparity can still crop up.

Money

As of the latest patch, "loot from dead enemies is now always identical for all co-op players". Further research and testing reveals that all money received is identical for all co-op players in the sense that when someone picks up money from an enemy or loot container, all co-op players get that same amount of money with the exception of those with money boosting abilities who would have the amount that they receive modified by those abilities.

XP skills

Skills that increase XP, even if they claim to affect everyone in co-op have been reported to only do so for those in very close proximity. It would appear that these skills would only affect players with those skills active when co-op players are not bunched up. Obviously individually affecting skills will only affect the individual. This is a great way to further XP disparity.

Quests

Quest rewards are a bit more problematic. Each player in a co-op game may need to turn in a quest to get the rewards. Quest XP is far more challenging to explain. If the co-op players are not at the same points in the campaign, only players at or beyond the host's campaign progress will get quest XP. As of the latest patch, "in subsequent playthroughs XP is awarded for all quests completed in co-op" so for those players who have completed the game, they should receive XP, even when they aren't up to that point in single-player campaign again. It has been noted that sometimes, quest XP rewards have not been received in co-op when both players are at the same point in the campaign and the workaround was to have the co-op partners turn in the quests rather than the host. Quest XP is also scaled to your level so XP disparity will be further widened.

Challenge XP

Challenge progress is preserved across characters and playthroughs and XP only goes to the character that completes the challenge. All of a sudden, someone might complete a challenge they've been progressing towards with a different character and create a vast XP gap.

Action XP

You get individual XP for small actions such as healing, buffs, breaking doors and the like which can also increase XP disparity.

Combat XP

XP Bonuses abound. You get extra XP from breaking bones, landing criticals, etc. You get a share of the XP if you deal some of the damage, with the person dealing the final blow getting the most XP. Players who don't participate in combat get very little of the XP. Due to different combat mechanics and tactics, it is very easy for an XP disparity to form.

As of the current version, "enemy's levels can now be adjusted independently for each co-op player," and this means that by default, each co-op player will individually see the same enemies at or around their own level and XP will be distributed in accordance with their level, furthering XP disparity. It's possible to turn this option off, but it may only be with a mod.

Dead Island Co-op is Defective

All of a sudden people will sometimes jump in level for no apparent reason. Dead Island co-op is notoriously buggy and there are many modders working to try and address these concerns so you might try a mod or two to try and balance out the issues you've experienced, but there are no guaranteed fixes for this broken system.

Dead island DLC availability

Question

I Got the 2 DLC(Ryder White and Bloodbath Arena) for dead island, but when are they available for me to play?

Do I have to complete the game or get to a specific locations?

Asked by Arremer

Answer

All new blueprints and weapons are added to your game with the install of the DLC.

Ryder White

According to the Dead Island Wiki, this DLC was released on February 1, 2012.

As you can clearly see in this video, you can access this content by selecting Ryder White at the character select screen at the start of a new campaign.

Bloodbath Arena

Bloodbath Arena as described on the Dead Island Wiki states:

...the DLC was available for download on November 22, 2011

The arena is accessed from the resort jungle tunnel entrance, there is a door labeled "Arena Entrance" at the mouth of the tunnel. After entering for the first time, it is then found on the Fast Travel screen.

What do the weapon prefixes mean in Dead Island?

Question

I noticed that the weapons in Dead Island have prefixes on their names. The ones I've seen so far are:

  • Damaging
  • Feeble
  • Tiring
  • Weak
  • Flimsy
  • Spiteful
  • Disabling

In examining the items, it seems that the names are related to the most extreme stats, such as:

  • Flimsy weapons have very low Durability
  • Tiring weapons have very high Handling

However, I'm not sure of the pattern for other attributes like Feeble and Spiteful. For example, in the store I see two items, a Spiteful Baseball Bat and a Spiteful Mace. Here is a stat comparison:

                Spiteful Baseball Bat Spiteful Mace
Damage 71 64
Force 95 123
Durability 32 33
Handling 70 24

The highest stat for both of them is Force, so why aren't they Disabling? There's a vast difference between their Handling scores and Durability is roughly the same. I don't get it.

What are all the weapon prefixes, and how do they relate to the weapon's attributes?

Asked by FAE

Answer

There are a lot of prefixes and even more questions about them and their meaning. Some have only been seen in pre-release info or screeshots and some effects have not been well documented. There's a fairly good list on the Dead Island wiki and while it's a bit unreadable, the weapon mod FAQ lists the prefixes under the associated mods. Neither of these consider mods unique to one weapon as adding a prefix for the most part. If you can follow the association of the prefixes to the mods, the Dead Island wikia has some more detailed effect information. The accuracy of any of these sources is somewhat dubious for the effects so it may take some digging into the games' files for something more conclusive.

As you know, the game takes a base items and then adds prefixes after to modify characteristics. The game uses a weighted random algorithm with the item level as the base value to generate items and it is possible for items to have multiple prefixes. There are also prefixes from weapon mods that can be added and others of unknown origin.

I'll transcribe the known prefixes (107 at present) and their believed effects, ordering the generated prefixes according to the game's data file and I'll add whether I believe the descriptor is positive or negative:

There are still a lot of unknowns pertaining to the prefixes. I've seen the burning prefix shown in screenshots, but I'm not sure if they've actually been found and exist within the game or if they were part of the pre-release screens. It is listed on the wiki so I added it, but information on these is scarce. There's also the question of effects on handling as few of these seem to provide their clear effects on it as the critical mods seem to reduce handling and the tiring prefix has been described as doing this as well, but the effect is hard to corroborate.

What's a good way for me to find a Katana, aside from Zed's Demise?

Question

So I'm level 41 and I just got to the Jungle, but I haven't seen a Katana since level 30. I found a Frail Katana on the beach of the first area at around level 30 inside of a metal chest. Since then, I have been checking shops and chests and enemies and what-have-you, yet I still have not seen any other Katanas. Aside from Zed's Demise (I'm not that far yet), is there any certain way to obtain a Katana?

Asked by Aceofgods

Answer

Locations

  • A side mission in the Jungle, given by Connor gives the Katana as a reward.
  • A side mission to the prison leads to the legendary katana, Zed's Demise.
  • Can be randomly dropped by zombies in the jungle.
  • Different merchants in later levels of the game, can sometimes sell a Katana.( Check merchants. I saw an Orange one for sale in the Jungle. Also, there's a scientist above the lab in the Jungle with a short chain of quests, just follow the winding path into the mountains till you hit a gate. He's right beside it locked in a building.)

A little FYI

Xian Mei can perform a special attack when her first blade skill is upgraded. The skill is activated when you aim at a zombies head or neck, then Xian presses the blade against the zombies neck, causing roughly 1000-2000 damage.

Can you leave the Prison?

Question

I'm getting pretty close to the part of the game where you have to go to the Prison Island. I've payed alot of games where the last level is the last level, and you can't leave it to return anywhere. Is Dead Island like that, in that you can't leave the Prison Island once you go there?

Asked by Aceofgods

Answer

Sorry, no you can't. Once inside the prison you are set to finish the game. They even warn you when you are about to leave the lab and go that you can't go back after this point. However, you can restart the story when you finish the game. You keep all weapons( unless starting a new character for the achievement) and you keep your level and money.

What's the best way to kill a floater in Dead Island?

Question

I'm having mega trouble killing them: I've tried bombs, shotguns, etc. but they're still a nuisance!

Are there any tips or tricks to taking them out?

Asked by Sarah

Answer

I found that melee weapons work the best. Charge in, circle strafe around it and swing away with a melee weapon.

Or if you are able to knock them over, stomping on its head will also do it.

Do miscellaneous items take up inventory space?

Question

I was just wondering if all the items you collect over time take up space in your inventory making it so you can't have as many weapons, med kits and items of importance? I just sold a lot of my things, I had a crazy amount of stuff, can you keep collecting with no penalties, i.e. space issues?

Asked by Sarah

Answer

The only things that take up space in your inventory are usable items: weapons, health kits, alcohol etc.

Things like wire, algae, batteries (the miscellaneous items) do NOT take up space.

You will find as you play through the game that a lot of the weapon mods tend to appear after Act 1 and usually require more than 1 of an item (eg. Batteries x2). Keep every miscellaneous thing you loot. Miscellaneous items that show up in green (like the LP3400 battery) are used in later level mods (like ones found in Act 3).

I'm having problems with the storage girl in act 2 in Dead Island

Question

I can give her my weapons easily but when I try to take them back and click on them they disappear and are gone for good. Is this a glitch, has anyone had the same problem? Thanks for your answers in advance!

Asked by Sarah

Answer

As it turns out, your suspicion may be correct. The Dead Island wiki lists this as a glitch - the emphasis is mine:

After killing a zombie by throwing a weapon at it then retrieving it, reloading a checkpoint, dying and respawning, completing an objective, or giving items to Jin to store (taking a weapon out of storage, or traveling to a new area with weapons in her inventory), a weapon(s) might spontaneously delete from the inventory it is located in. Full Inventory's will not drop items from Jin, but delete the item(their are some cases when the item will drop to the floor).

The Xbox forums have a similar post, as do the GameSpot forums.

But hey! There's good news! Well, sort of. In October, they released a patch for the PC version that fixed this issue among others:

Fixed: disappearing items when there is no place in inventory and a player tries to get an item from Jin’s storage

Unfortunately, the update for the 360 that was released in November was supposed to contain the same set of fixes, as well as other improvements (including boosting the level cap to 60) ... and it did not list a fix for the issue you describe.

I see no recent news about another patch, just about DLC, so for the time being, this is a bug, and the only workaround is to remember to check your inventory every time you interact with Jin.

Are Dead Island's achievements counted across playthroughs and play modes?

Question

I want to know if the achievements can be acquired across multiplayer playthroughs/characters and through singleplayer and co-op.

I'm mostly wondering because the achievement Busy, busy, busy says "Finish 75 quests cumulatively," but the other achievements do not have this caveat.

So for example, for the achievement Cardio, which requires traveling 250 kilometers on foot, will that add up when I'm playing single player as Xian and when playing co-op as Logan, or not? Do all achievements work the same way?

Answer

Yes. Most achievements and challenges are cumulative across all playthroughs and modes. The achievements relating to collectibles (Gotta find 'em all and Nearly there) seem to require using a single character, but you can repeat the campaign with a character in single-player mode, which keeps your skills and inventory intact, including all collectibles you've found, so you can use that game-plus to get the rest of the items you missed the first time through.

Also, the challenge relating to collectibles (My collectibles, let me show you them!) does count total collectibles across all characters, and they do not have to be unique collectibles. (Example: If you get Banoi Herald excerpt #1 with all four characters, that will count 4 toward the total of 140; you do not have to find 140 unique collectibles across all four characters.)

Note that this gives you an easy way to level up a new character: get to 90% or more on a Level 4 challenge with a high-level character, get to a checkpoint to save your progress, then load a low-level character and complete the challenge. Because the experience reward does not scale, a reward that might not change a level-50 character much can boost a level-5 character several levels.

How do you complete the challenge “Can't have enough Ram”?

Question

I have no idea how to ram enemies.

How do I do this?

Asked by Sarah

Answer

You can only get this challenge by using Sam B's Tackle skill.

From the wiki:

  • 25 enemies need to be rammed at level one.
  • 50 enemies need to be rammed at level two.
  • 250 enemies need to be rammed at level three.
  • 500 enemies need to be rammed at level four.

How do I complete One is All I Need?

Question

I'm trying to get the 'One is All I Need' achievement but I'm having trouble.

Sometimes get the progress window to pop up, and other times I kill a zombie with one hit and nothing happens. Any hints on best weapons to use and strategies?

Asked by Sarah

Answer

Note that you have to kill five Infected in a row: one-hit kills on other types don't count (and also don't affect your streak; the only thing that will break your streak is doing damage to an Infected without killing it).

You're still going to want to do this in an area where there are several Infected; chances are that even if you have a weapon strong enough to one-shot an Infected, if you don't get five at once, that weapon will wear down and not do enough damage later.

Fury is a good option for this: save it until you reach an area where you know there are enough Infected,

say, Chapter 17, where you're trying to reach the roof before White does

and then trigger it. I can't vouch for its success with other characters, but with boosted Fury powers, Sam B tears through Infected easily.

The Dead Island wiki has another suggestion:

There's a cheap way to get this achievement easily early in the game. Near the gas station located in the south of the map in Act I, there is a tunnel with 3 or 4 cars burning. When the player approaches the tunnel, one infected will come out in flames (losing health continually) to attack the player. This wil [sic] make that one simple well-timed blow with any decent weapon will cause death to the infected (as infected have the lowest health among the zombies). About 30 seconds after, one second infected will rush out in the same condition. Repeating this five times will cause the achievement to pop.

Note that this works with Infected who have been damaged. You don't have to take all of their health with one shot, just all of their remaining health.

Green coloured items menu items in Dead Island, sell or keep?

Question

In dead Island the items you pick up in the game like flares that are green coloured in your item menu, are they just high end items to sell or are they used for anything special?

Answer

Some will be used for mods, most you can sell. I played this for PS3 and had TONS of blue and violet weapons. I sold almost every green weapon or item I came across being I had either found or made enough weapons that were way more powerful than any of the green stuff I was getting.

Also, side note, I had at least 3-4 orange, only liked one of them.

How do I save my Dead Island game on PS3?

Question

Apparently the developers forgot to include a save command in the ps3 version, and as a result the game saves only when it feels like it.

This results in lots of potential for lost data (indeed the Internet is rife with stories of people losing hours of play and multiple levels).

Is there any method known behind what triggers the game to save? The red biohazard symbol seems linked, but I've had partial data loss following apparent saves (going by the red biohazard symbol) with some quest pickups (and exp and drops) saved, but others lost.

As an additional question, Can you save your in game location anywhere besides the quest hubs (I found myself at the life guard station after my last session, even though it had been over an hour of play time since I had been there last)?

Bonus points if someone can answer and provide information about whether a patch to fix this is planned.

Answer

There's no other way of saving the game, other than the bugged auto saving.

They are definitely going to fix it, but when is unknown at this time. Here's a quote I found on the fan forums, however I do not know how reliable this source is:

I called Tech support they said the patch that will fix the save issues should be here either Monday or Tuesday at the latest.

Also, someone has reported that they fixed the problem. The steps he did was:

  1. Go into Game Data Utility
  2. Select the Dead Island file (It should be 31Mb)
  3. Remove the file
  4. Run Dead Island
  5. When shown the update screen, cancel it. (It should log you out of PSN until you install it)
  6. Play the game offline for five minutes. (Repair your weapons or something)
  7. Turn off your PS3 (I recommend the touch button on the front of the PS3, and THEN flick the switch at the back)
  8. Turn on your PS3 again
  9. Run Dead Island
  10. Allow the patch to install

NOTE: I don't have Dead Island on the PS3 so there's no way I can test that this actually works. So if someone should test it and report back if it fixes it or not.

How do I disable always on voice chat in Dead Island?

Question

I decided to try out Dead Island's co-op mode. Unfortunately, there seems to be no way to turn off voicechat and I can't find any push to talk option. I don't want to just unplug my microphone because I want to be able to chat with my friends using Mumble or some other external program.

I can't seem to find any option in the audio configuration file to turn off voicechat or change it to push to talk. Is there any way to do this or do I need to wait for a patch?

Answer

As of the latest Dead Island patch, there is now a way to disable voice chat in the options:

Where can I find more diamonds or champagne?

Question

I need a bunch of diamonds to make a mod, and the only way I know of is to turn in champagne as exchange, but so far I've only found one bottle (I forgot where). Where can I get more champagne and diamonds?

Answer

  • Multiple fridges in the kitchen area of the Hotel.
  • Two refrigerators in the abandoned house also known as the Square near the southern edge of the Moresby map. You can fast travel to and from here to farm them.
  • Refrigeration units inside the Supermarket.
  • Three refrigerators in the Laboratory, two in the room where Dr. West is standing, and one fridge in the corner room down the hall through the two double doors.
  • Two refrigerators within the hut on the Eastern edge of the River Village, at the top of the hill.

The fridges in the Hotel was where I found the most. I think I got about half a dozen bottles of champagne from there the first time I went through.

What are the different rarity colors in Dead Island?

Question

So far in Dead Island I've noticed white, green, blue, and purple items. These seem to indicate different rarities, similar to the classification system used in Borderlands, but I don't know what these colors actually mean. Is green more rare than blue? What are the different rarity colors?

Answer

So far, here are all the colors I've found ordered in quality (based on overall stats when compared to one of lesser color and also how often I see weapons of that color):

white->green->blue->purple->orange

The in game text during loading says that some of the quest rewards gives you unique weapons, and (assuming Gabriel's Sledgehammer is a unique), it is still an orange colored weapon. So I'm going to assume that even unique weapons are orange. I've also found a Master Chef, which was also orange.

This link seems to back up my answer.

Is there a technique to knocking down doors?

Question

In Dead Island, there is an achievement called Knock, Knock which is completed by breaching a locked door on the first attempt.

The meter in the game is incomprehensible to me and I've never been able to open a door in under three blows. Is there some technique that is more effective for knocking down doors?

Answer

When you enter the door-knocking minigame, you're presented with a grayish bar with a red center. Furthermore, there's a white indicator that starts in the middle. When you hold your right joystick down (or move your mouse back), the white indicator starts swinging from end to end. By swinging the mouse or joysytick forward/up, you slam into the door. The closer your white indicator is to the center, the more damage you do to the door, indicated by the grey bar reducing. In order to knock down the door in one attempt, you must swing forward when the white indicator is in the dead center of the bar.

Note that, to make this easier, you don't have to swing forward on the first pass. As long as you keep your mouse where you moved it back or your joystick down, the indicator will keep swinging. Rushing it will usually only cause you to mess up.

Where is the voice recording #4 in Dead Island?

Question

I just came across #5, but the last one I found was #3. I looked through most of the quest locations in the city already, but I can't find it.

Where is recording #4?

Answer

It took me a while, but I found it. It's in a strange location considering that quests will lead you to #5 much quicker than to #4.

Anyways, part of the "Head of Cerberus" missions will lead you to the rooftops of the center of the city. Next to one of the speakers (the last one) that you need to activate there will be a recording on the floor: #4.
