How do I get out of the police car?

Question

I am stuck at the very beginning after the car crash. It is said I should look around and find a way out of the car, but all I see are my handcuffs, a shutgun, and the dead police officer. I have no idea how to interact with my surroundings.

How am I supposed to get out of the police car?

Key for gadget 1 selection doesn't work

Question

I have a huge problem with the key "3" which is default for the gadget 1 (rocket launcher, medpack and more). The problem is basically, that it doesn't matter what key I assign to that gadget 1 selection, it doesn't work. I even tried a mouse button and my joystick to make it work. I can't use this selection! I always have to use the mouse wheel to select my first gadget.

This is totally nuts :/

I have tried everything to get it working, but it just doesn't work. Someone has an idea?

Asked by WarrenFaith

Answer

Bind "Select Underslung Weapon" to the same key as "Select Gadget 1" key.

It seems by default both "Select Gadget 1" and "Select Underslung Weapon" are the same key. I dunno why they did it this way... D:

How does the game decide which building to center on when double-tapping a hotkey bound to multiple separate buildings?

Question

Say I have all of my nexuses on hotkey 4. I double-tap 4 -- how does the game decide which nexus to center the camera on? Is there a way to quickly toggle around, centering on each building in a hotkey group in turn? Or must I always use separate hotkeys for each nexus?

These two questions mention spacebar as another way to cycle around your bases, but I haven't tried it yet.

Asked by Matt McHenry

Answer

I'm not sure if you are looking for this exactly, but here is my best guess. Mkaito may be right. It may very well center on the one closest to where your screen is. I will test this shortly and update my answer.

However, for quickly switching through bases you can use the backspace key or you can move that key in the settings to a more favorable position.

Spacebar is simply for recent alerts.

Edit I just tested out the theory. When double clicking your hotkey group it does snap the the building closest to your current screen position. There is no way to toggle through the list, however. Tab does not workto do so nor does spacebar or backspace.

Is the gamepad support in The Witcher 2: Enhanced Edition the same as in the Xbox 360 version?

Question

The Witcher 2 already had gamepad support, I know that, but with the Xbox 360 "Enhanced Edition" this has been completely rehauled to better fit the Xbox 360 controller and console play, alongside the UI and all menus in the game.

What I want to know is: Does the current version of The Witcher 2, which I believe is also called "Enhanced Edition" (if not, I probably wouldn't even be asking this question) use the overhauled Xbox 360 control scheme when you're playing with a gamepad or does it use the older version?

Asked by Rukishou

Answer

While Witcher 2 has always had (really good) support for the 360 controller, the Enhanced Edition's revised 360 controls currently have not made it to the PC Enhanced Edition. Kotaku:

Weirdly, the 360's enhanced controller setup doesn't make its way over to the PC version of the Enhanced Edition, which bummed me out. I'm one of the odd ones who played The Witcher 2 with a controller on PC, and I find that I prefer the 360's button layout and targeting system, which feel a touch different (and are arranged differently) on the PC.

Tips for improving overall gameplay and camera control in Starcraft 2?

Question

Have you ever had a dream where you're trying to run, but for some reason you just can't move your legs very fast and it's very annoying? I think you know what I'm talking about, you can see where you want to be but you just can't get there.

This is the problem I have with Starcraft 2. I have great game knowledge from watching replays/live casts, reading wikis/strategy guides, and I know what I could use for victory, but I can't seem to actually make it happen very well. I tend to always get into a reactionary mode and then everything becomes to overwhelming.

There are two main factors that I have found, one is camera control and one is just overall control in general, meaning knowing what/when/who to click.

In terms of camera control, this is the worst limitation. I can only view a small window of the entire map at any given time. However, I need to be controlling everything at once. This is a real challenge. I use hotkeys so I can build units while out on the field, but there is a major gap in the ability to reinforce. If I'm staging an attack and building units in the background with hotkeys, there needs to be a time where I switch my view back to my base, rally up my new units, and add them to the battle (if I just set my rally points to the battle field I would have no good force back at my base and the units would be trickling across the map). However during this time my vision is no longer on my attack force which causes major problems. Of course during this whole time I should be teching up and expanding, like I said, it's like those running dreams...

So beyond where I should be 'looking' with the camera, how can I get better at controlling everything, I always feel like I am one step behind my army. It's as if instead of me happening to my base/army, my base/army is happening to me. I can't seem to feel like I'm in control but rather like I'm trying to lead a class full of 3rd graders through a museum: I know what I want them to learn and what exhibits I want to make it to but half the kids are trying to run off and climb on things, and there is only so much time in the day.

I hope these are good analogies of what I am trying to describe as it is kind of hard to put it into words. I know Starcraft 2 is a game of constraints, but how can I take advantage of them instead of being hindered by them?

EDIT: Here I found a replay where the players seem to have really good control and tend to utilize the camera very well: http://sc2rep.net/replays/starcraft-2-replay-z-%EC%98%A4%EC%A7%80%EC%97%90%EC%84%9C%EA%B3%BC%EC%9D%BC%EC%9E%A5%EC%88%98-vs-p-karsidzenith-xelnaga-caverns-09-07-2010

Asked by Ryan

Answer

+1 for the dream analogy!

Like dreams, there is a good explanation of why you are living your game in slow motion, there is always one thing slowing down everything else. In the case of dreams, it is your brain, that actually dreams faster than your perception. That's why you seem to be slow, because the dream is actually faster than what you perceive.

For StarCraft, this is another problem. I discovered by studying replays that faster players remove one very large part of the time you may take in your game: controlling the army.

As an unexperienced player, you might not be familiar with unit balance. So when sending your 12 zerglings againts those 4 zealots, you don't yet know the outcome. I'm sure you expect some victory, but can you trust this expectation enough to actually leave your zerglings do the work without you?

I often find myself microing too much when dealing with large overpowered army. Yeah, I have 24 zerglings and they meet 1 zealot. Really, no need to micro them, just return and take care of your base!

Your problem may be the same...

How can I aim farther using the keyboard controls in DoomRL?

Question

When firing a weapon in DoomRL, you can aim using either the arrow keys or the mouse. When using the keyboard, DoomRL allows me to aim up to 8 tiles away. When using the mouse, I can aim as far as I'd like. This is useful for tactics like blind-firing at a tile out of your vision range, but I prefer to use the keyboard controls. Is there a way to aim at a specific distant tile using the keyboard?

Asked by Mike Welsh

Answer

It's a bug with the differences between the G-version and the normal version -- you can't aim further in ASCII mode. It may be fixed in the next release.

Which Starcraft 2 hotkey set should I use?

Question

I played a lot of beta SC2 games (as random) with the grid setup and managed. Since then I've started watching Day[9] and some other commentators who seem to refer often to the default hotkeys in their recommendations for, eg., keeping drones building at all times.

My question is: to what extent are hotkeys mere preference? If we took a random sampling of competitive players, would roughly 50% be using the grid layout, or would it skew for some relevant game-play reason?

Asked by ladenedge

Answer

I would argue that if you're just starting out, grid hotkeys are more efficient since you can memorize either which key it is or where on the unit-card the button is located (visual cues tend to help memorization) - and if you don't know the hotkey, you can find it without mousing over the button.
Also, all the keys are on one side of the keyboard, meaning you won't have to move your hand as much.

That being said, the vast majority of players use the default keys either because
A) They don't know grid exists, or
B) They are already used to the default layout (grid was not an option in the beta), and/or were already used to the very similar layout of Starcraft 1; there really is no benefit to them learning a new layout if they already have the default hotkeys memorized. Most competitive players would fall into this category.

Mouse Acceleration in Deus Ex: Human Revolution

Question

Is there a way to enable non-linear mouse acceleration in Deus Ex: Human Revolution?

I'm asking about a non-linear translation of physical mouse movement speed to angular speed of the in-game view. This type of translation feels very natural to me, as it's implemented in many desktop operating systems and in most FPS games I've played.

I don't know if acceleration is the right term for this, but I remember Windows' mouse control panel calling it that way in some older versions of Windows. In Window 7 it's called enhance pointer precision and is enabled by default. It's called pointer ballistics by Microsoft and is described under http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/hardware/gg463319.aspx.

I can't find any option controlling this in the game's menu or it's setup utility (launched from Steam by choosing Setup Deus Ex: Human Revolution after double clicking the game in the game library). Without this option, I find aiming very hard because if I configure the mouse sensitivity to get acceptable aiming precision, making a 180-degree-turn is impossible without either moving my wrist or lifting the mouse and moving it in the reverse direction.

Asked by Feuermurmel

Answer

It does indeed seem to be impossible to have any kind of nonlinear acceleration in Deus Ex: Human Revolution. Yet I was surprised how well I could adjust to the difference in conversion from mouse to camera movement between this game and what I'm used to from other games (using any of the games based on the Source engine from Valve as a reference).

But I still notice that I need to move the mouse much farther and/or faster while being less precise at targeting, so I still consider this a deficiency of Deus Ex: Human Revolution's engine.

How can I use the D-pad of my classic controller like the one on the Wii-Mote?

Question

I just bought a Classic Controller Pro for my Wii (mainly to play old (S)NES games on the emulator). However, I just thought it would be a great idea to try it out with SSBB. When I play SSBB I use the Wii-Mote without Nunchuck in the horizontal position, which allows me to control movement with the D-pad.

In the configuration menu I found, I cannot figure out how to map the Classic Controller's D-pad to the same functionality (by default, you move with the left analog stick). I refuse to believe that it's impossible, but all I can choose for the left-right-arrows is: Attack, Special, Jump, Shield, Grab and Horizontal-Mock. Similarly for the down-arrow.

Is there some hack or trick to configure the D-pad. I mean, the Classic Controller is a superset of the Wii-Mote. Why would you exclude the most obvious choice for the D-pad?

Asked by bitmask

Answer

Brawl does not allow you to use the D-pad for movement if there is a control stick available (on any controller, Classic or otherwise). There are legitimate reasons for this; using the D-pad instead of a control stick will gimp your controls slightly. I believe this also has to do with how the control maps are coded - because up, down, and side are different functions in non-Wiimote alone setups, you can't "merge" the whole thing into "movement" and "jump". (They had to carve up a few mechanics to squeeze the game into the D-pad anyway, it gimped parts of the game engine itself.) It's the exception; the control stick is the rule (and indeed the crux of the series).

Of course there are probably hacks for this, but I don't know any offhand.

How can I rotate the map?

Question

I just started playing Realm of the Mad God on Steam. The intro video shows the map rotating as players move around it, but I can't find any key (or key maps) which do this. Is it possible to do in the PC version?

Asked by Dan Rasmussen

Answer

Check the options. There's an option to set the map's default angle to 45 degrees (default) or 0 degrees as well as some options to change hotkeys and there's where you'll find the defaults for rotating the map (which I don't know off the top of my head but I believe they're Q and E). You have to unlock the map for rotation in the options though before you can use Q and E, this is of course assuming that those are the right keys to do it with.

Crysis PC has auto-aim when played with a gamepad?! Can I disable it?

Question

It's really obvious with the Automatic Grenade Launcher in Crysis Warhead. The AGL doesn't have an aim mode, so the view shouldn't change at all when you squeeze the left trigger. But if your reticle is near an enemy, the camera jerks in their direction.

I prefer the ergonomics of a gamepad and I don't want this crutch -- especially when it backfires and actually makes some shots more difficult. Is there a CVAR or something?

Asked by Metaphile

Answer

I've discovered at least two types of auto-aim in Crysis/Crysis Warhead. The first takes effect when switching into aim mode. It just jerks your reticle toward the nearest nearby target. The second type takes effect when firing. It's like a sort of magnetic attraction that dampens recoil drift -- very noticeable with automatic weapons.

Anyway, both types of auto-aim can be disabled via CVARs! Set aim_assistAimEnabled and aim_assistTriggerEnabled to 0.

If you bought Crysis through Steam, add these to your launch options:

+aim_assistAimEnabled 0 +aim_assistTriggerEnabled 0

Can you skip dialogues in Cave Story?

Question

I am playing Cave Story on hard. I don't find it too difficult, but I would like to be able to replay some segments of the game more quickly. Especially boss fights work on my nerves sometimes, as they are introduced with quite long dialogues.

Pressing 'z' makes the dialogues scroll by faster, but you can't entirely skip them. Is there any way to skip dialogues entirely?

Answer

As far as I can tell, no.

Both Cave Story and Cave Story+ actually attempt to make this more bearable. If you've already sat through a dialog segment and died, the dialog will appear much faster the second time — i.e., box by box instead of scrolling text. These can be skipped through relatively quickly by hammering Z.

Skipping these sequences entirely does not seem to be possible, however.

Is there a keyboard shortcut to target my companion in SW:TOR?

Question

In SWTOR, I often find myself playing a healer to my companion tanking, especially against Elite-level mobs.

Currently, I am pressing F1 twice in order to target my companion. Sometimes, though, I don't quite make it and poor Khem Val dies.

Is there a single shortcut I can use to avoid this?

Answer

By default the key combination to do this is Shift + F1.

How much am I supposed to tilt the controller?

Question

This question comes in relation to a couple trophies I am completely stuck on in Heavy Rain:

  • Kamikaze
The Bear - Take the best route on the highway

  • I'm not Scared!
Twins - Follow your brother without making any mistakes

These would both be generally easy except for the fact they both involve tilt commands with the controller, which neither of my controllers seem to want to do. I have tried these chapters many, many times (around 50 now) and I can get all the ordinary left, right, X, and O moves down perfectly, no problem. But it only ever seems to recognize around 50% of any tilt commands I have to do. I have tried everything to do these, tilting it up at a 90 degree angle to just tilting it slightly. It seems like it sometimes just doesn't want to recognize that I tilted the controller.

Is there some specific way I'm supposed to tilt the controller to get the game to recognize that I did? I mean, I went as far as actually pausing the game after each successful command so that I could level the controller and tilt again, still with no success. Keep in mind, I've tried this with two separate controllers, one which I use frequently, and the other which is just a backup that I've only ever used a few times.

Answer

On The Bear mission, my biggest recommendation is to hold the controller as if you're holding the wheel of a car, with the buttons facing you, and tilting the wheel left and right like you would turn a wheel.

On the mission to follow your brother, I assume you're having problems with the balancing parts, would recommend holding the controller in front of you, face buttons facing the ceiling, and tilting left and right like you would tilt a tray. It shouldn't require too much tilting. Don't follow in the animation in the icon but follow the character's hands, tilting the control as to keep them leveled.

Hope these tips help.

How to make the key 'WIN' used for key bindings?

Question

I know there is a method in windows to ban the WIN key(To edit the register), and when I hit the WIN key, nothing happens. However, can I use the key for key-bindings?

Answer

You can use a utility to rebind keys to other keys, or manually hack your registry to do so. Here's the source MSKB article that they used.

For instance, the following registry key will swap F11 and LWIN:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Keyboard Layout]
"Scancode Map"=hex:00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,03,00,00,00,57,00,5b,e0,5b,e0,57,00,\
  00,00,00,00

Broken down:

  • 00,00,00,00,: Version (0)
  • 00,00,00,00,: Flags (0)
  • 03,00,00,00,: Number of entries, including trailing null (3)
  • 57,00,5b,e0,: The left Windows Key (E0 5B, it's backwards) is interpreted as an F11 (00 57)
  • 5b,e0,57,00,: F11 (00 57) is interpreted as the left Windows Key (E0 5B)
  • 00,00,00,00 : Null ("we're done")

After modifying your registry, you must relog (or restart) in order for the changes to take effect.

What scancode is what key? See this WHDC article, specifically the Word document in it. Use the values from the "scan 1 make" column. Alternatively, some "keyboard test" utilities will tell you.

Once you've remapped keys in windows, you can bind them as you see fit.

How do I favourite an item?

Question

I'm playing on a PC and all of my keybindings have been rebound since I'm left-handed. Having a hard time figuring out which button favourites - I thought it would be the sheathe button like on Xbox, but that simply drops my item.

Which button favourites the item? Please note I don't want to know which letter it is on the keyboard, I want to know what button it says on the controls menu (i.e. if it's the "activate" button or the "sprint" button or whatever).

Answer

On PC it is the "Change POV" button.

How can I remap the keybindings for containers in Skyrim?

Question

The interface for containers in Skyrim is driving me nuts. On the chest side, press E and you take the ingredient. Change to your inventory side, press E and you eat the item, instead of dropping it in to the box.

On the other hand, I have emptied the whole chest countless times, because the R key moves one item from your inventory into the container, but all items the other way round.

Is there any way to change this behavior? Mods like "Interface Hard Coded Key Tweaks" only seem to be able to change the whole group of functions a key can be bound to in different situations (meaning that I could bind "Take" and "Eat" on another key, but not on different keys).

Answer

Two solutions I can think of:

  • Check out the SkyUI mod. It may alleviate the problem as it's more reliant on the mouse, however it doesn't replace all menus at this time (only the personal inventory screen).

  • If you have Adobe Flash and with some programming experience I'm pretty sure you can separate those predefined controls into any keys you like. See my question Config setting for the threshold between single/multiple item handling? for the basics of opening and editing the Interface files. You'll need a tool like FOMM to see inside the Skyrim - Interface.bsa file and find the correct directory structure to store your own "mod".

You wouldn't be able to change the UI like SkyUI does without prior Flash experience. However as I have found out, it's fairly simple to edit the actionscript code and re-publish the files without touching anything else.

EDIT If you're willing to hack the actionscript, see line 62 of ContainerMenu.as

Can I use “click and hold” sighting?

Question

By default, you look down the sights by clicking the right mouse button, and stop looking down them by clicking it again.

Is it possible to change the controls to look down the sights when you press the right mouse button, and stop looking down the sights on mouse release?

Answer

take a look at you control-settings, there are two options:

  • Hold Aim Down Sight
  • Toggle Aim Down Sight

i don't know the exact lables for these options as i only own the german version, but the first one is what you're looking for wile the second one seems to be the one you're using - just change your settings.
