How do I wake the boss at the top of the Tower of Nod?

Question

There doesn't seem to be any way in game to do it. I've tried various abilities (like Whistle) and the party tricks, but none seem to work!

Asked by Daemonic

Answer

Unfortunately, this looks to be impossible in the current state of the game. There will be a DLC that you can buy sometime in the near future that will allow you to continue on.

Base stats for all vocations at level 99 in Dragon Quest IX?

Question

I'm currently trying to decide on what will be the "main" jobs for my characters in DQ9. Does anyone have a chart showing what every job's base stats (before bonuses from skill points and seeds) would be at level 99? Since abilities are shared between jobs, picking a main job is mostly just about the final stats and equipment, at least for non-spellcasters.

Answer

Yes!

Is there a better way to level up in Dragon Quest IX?

Question

Currently playing Dragon Quest IX and I want to level up some characters quickly as I'm at the Gittish castle (just beat Hootingham). My main is 35, the others are 31. I looked up the Priest class and they get multi heal at 38 which made me groan that I would have to grind 7 levels :(

I know that I can go hunt metal slimes etc but they are so freaking rare (or they run away) it is making for an overly grindy experience which is becoming frustrating :(

Would appreciate any pointers on other ways to level up (if there are).

Thanks :)

Answer

Unfortunately, killing metal slimes is your best bet. They're fairly rare, but they're also worth big, big XP. The Quarantomb has a fair number of them, and that's where I farmed in the early part of the game. You'll want to go prepared with attacks that are strong against Metal enemies, plus high speed and speed boosting spells. There's a good strategy here that may help save you some trouble.

This GameFAQs thread lists some locations where you can find other metal slime variants later in the game. The consensus seems to be that Bad Cave is the best place to farm Liquid Metal slimes.

It may feel grindy, and that's because it is :( All the DQ games I've played have been this way - "it's a feature, not a bug." :)

What is the fastest way to get money?

Question

I'm playing Dragon Quest IX, and I'm at the part where I just got the boat. What is the fastest way to make a bunch of money? I need about 10,000 to buy the best equipment and grinding takes a really long time when you only get a few hundred per enemy.

Answer

Early on the game, the best technique is to fight the highest level monsters that you have access to.

Here are some more techniques:

  • Gold Golems, which you can find in the ditch south of Gleeba, drop 505 gold each.
  • Use Alchemy to make Ear Cosys (Fur Hood + Bunny Tail + Lambswool) and sell them. You can buy the ingredients at Slurry Quay (Fur Hood), Porth Llaffan (Bunny Tail) and Batsureg (Bunny Tail).
  • Use Alchemy to make Gold Mails (Silver Mail + Gold Ring + Gold Bracer) and sell them. You can buy the ingredients at Bloomingdale (Silver Mail) and Porth Llaffan (Gold Ring and Gold Bracer).
  • In mid level (Copper, Bronze, Steel, Silver, and Gold) Cave and Ruin grottoes, you might find Gem Jamborees - these are worth 1130 gold each, and drop Gleeban Gold Pieces or Gold Bars.
  • In high level (Platinum, Ruby, Emerald, Sapphire or Diamond) Ice (Snowhall, Tundra, Glacier) and Ruin (Crypt, Ruins, Path, Maze, Lair, World) grottoes, you might find Gem Slimes - these are worth 10080 gold each.

(Most of these techniques require finishing certain points of the game.)

What kinds of items can I use a Reset Stone with?

Question

What kinds of items can I use with a Reset Stone in Alchemy? Can the stones be used to de-volve any kind of item, or only special ones?

Answer

Reset Stones are only used to reset a failed Alchemiracle attempt.

Alchemiracles are special patterns involving the rare armor from Grotto end-bosses, orbs from the Legacy Bosses, and Agates of Evolution. They follow a pattern of Level 1 Item -> Level 2 Item -> Attempted Alchemiracle. Each Alchemiracle has a chance of success - the average is 20% - and a failed Alchemiracle gives you a "level 3 item", one that's not quite as good as the Alchemiracle result (a "level 4 item"), but still better than your level 2 one.

Reset stones can be used on this Level 3 result to reset it back to its level 1 state in order to attempt to succeed on the Alchemiracle again.

For example:

  • You obtain a pair of Sensible Sandals from Elusid.
  • You alchemise these Sandals along with a Blue Orb from Nimzo and an Agate of Evolution. This yields a pair of Sagacious Sandals.
  • You take your Sagacious Sandals and alchemise them with three more Blue Orbs and three more Agates. The Krak Pot will inform you that this is an attempted Alchemiracle, and ask you if you want to risk it. The game will be saved BEFORE AND AFTER your attempt, so you cannot save-scum this.
  • Depending on your luck, you will receive either Sentient Sandals (the successful Alchemiracle - level 4/ultimate sandals) or Sapient Sandals (a failed Alchemiracle - level 3 sandals)
  • If you failed to obtain the Sentient Sandals, you can alchemise the Sapient Sandals and a Reset Stone together to go back to your Sensible Sandals.

Bear in mind that if you are going for 100% Alchenomicon completion, you will have to perform both the failed Alchemiracle (Sapient Sandals), the successful Alchemiracle (Sentient Sandals), AND the reversion pattern (Sensible Sandals).

Is a melee-centric party without a healer viable in Dragon Quest IX?

Question

I have recently started playing Dragon Quest IX, and I was wondering if my party set up would be a viable one to play the game with. I'm just an hour or so after recruiting my party at the Inn:

  1. Me (Minstrel, going to become Gladiator eventually)
  2. Martial Artist
  3. Warrior
  4. Mage

What worries me most is the lack of a dedicated healer. However, I initially did create a priest, and it seemed like he mostly didn't do anything, and was a waste of spot where I could have another damage dealer. I'm intending for my Warrior to dabble in Paladin, and as a minstrel I also have some limited healing, plus medicines.

Will this party make it through the game, or does strong healing become a requirement later on? Would it me enough to just have my mage switch to priest when I got to that point?

Answer

Against the different boss, heavy healing is necessary. Starting with the third or so boss, he will hit twice per round, often with multiple target spells (megastorm or something like that in english, for example), so heavy healing is needed. Plus, some can heal themselves, drawing the battle in length. A dedicated healer is, in my humble opinion, necessary. Even with a priest dedicated to healing, I am sometimes constrained to use the healing spells of the main character to keep the whole group alive.

Unless you manage to have a damage output of hundreds of damage per round, you won't be able to kill a boss before he kills you.

Edit : Sometimes use of buffs/debuffs is mandatory. You won't survive a heavy hit with an alteration on your party and you won't damage a boss with protection on him, thus, you must counter those spell with the appropriate buffs/debuffs, and a buffing/debuffing player does not deal damages. Likewise, you have to counter alterations effects (sleep, paralyze, etc.). Also, the time a member of your party is healing himself or another one, he doesn't do damages. Having completed DQ4 and 5, and seeing DQ9 is the same and even harder, I can tell you cannot survive without proper healing.

The healer is quite useless on random monsters encountered on the map. My personal advice : specialize your healer in magic wands, this way you can regen the MP of your healer on the random encounters to arrive fully charged against the boss.

When to change occupations in Dragon Quest IX?

Question

I just reached the part in Dragon Quest IX where you get th ability to change occupations. The thing is, I can't figure out why I would want to. I feel like I should max out all the skills on the occupations I already have before I would even think about changing. Am I correct, or is there another reason to switch that I'm not getting?

Answer

A big reason to try out different vocations is to farm skill points.

For example, if you have a character who is a priest and you want him/her to learn wands. You could spend points you get from leveling up as a priest on your wand skill, but then it would be tougher to level up your priest vocation skill.

Instead you could make your character a mage, point all those points you get into wands, then switch back to priest. Then you could use all your priest points on your vocation.

A second reason is because maxing out an equipment skill at 100 points lets you use that skill on any class, even if they don't have it available. Martial artists for example cannot use shields, but you could level your martial artist as a class that can, get shields up to 100, then when you switch back to martial artist you will be able to use shields.
