Does the Soul Forge cost something (except time)?

Question

As the title says, does the use of the Soul Forge in the Conflux web application cost something except time?

It takes time to upgrade a Dynasty Weapon, and it doesn't consume my Dynasty points. So I don't understand what's the catch?

Asked by Mentoliptus

Answer

All that it costs is time. The "catch", as you put it, is that they are getting you to log in to their website regularly, where they can serve you ads or other content that they want you to see.

Does it matter what order I play the campaigns in?

Question

Is there any reason to play the campaigns in a particular order, or should I just pick whichever one strikes my fancy?

Answer

There's no benefit to playing the campaigns in a specific order. (Aside from the tutorial campaign, of course)

There is however, minor benefits from finishing the five "standard" campaigns before taking on the "final" campaign: since you must pick a hero from one of the finished campaigns for the final campaign, finishing more campaigns gives you a greater pantheon of heroes to pick from.

That said, there is nothing particularly relevant about beating one of the 5 standard campaigns before another.

Pick your favorite!

How do you use the plunder mine ability?

Question

I gave my secondary hero the Plunder Mine and Destroy Mine abilities.

Then I walked up to a mine. Nothing happened.

Skipped a turn and tried to visit it with full movement. Nothing.

I even tried selecting it from the ability window.

What am I missing? How do you activate the skill?

Answer

You may have to find the Plunder Mine ability in the spell book and cast it as a spell when you are standing at a mine.

How do I unlock the level 2 ability of the Sword of the Griffin?

Question

I'm playing through the second mission of the tutorial campaign in Heroes 6 and the only remaining quest (short of finishing the mission) is to get attuned to the Sword of the Griffin.

I'm online and connected to the CONFLUX servers, so that's not an issue. I also thought that I had to reach dynasty level 2 and the quest would complete, but that doesn't seem to be the case either.

What do I have to do, exactly?

Answer

Heroes of Might and Magic VI (Or whatever anagram thereof they're calling it) tracks Weapon experience separately from Dynasty Experience.

In short:

  • Dynasty Levels go up to 50, and unlock Tiers at the altar of wishes.

  • Weapon Levels go up to 5, and unlock new passive bonuses or active combat abilities.

In both cases, however, leveling them up is the same - winning battles. In the case of the weapons, the dynasty weapon in question must be wielded by a hero in the battle.

So... what do you have to do? Win more battles! You've not reached Weapon level 2, you've reached Dynasty level 2.

Final Note: Don't be discouraged by the seemingly insane numbers you need to reach weapon levels 3, 4, and 5. Is it a lot? Yes. But in the last map of each campaign, when you're routinely slaying 100's of angels (or angel-analogue) per fight, it adds up quick.

Is there any benefit to attacking enemies from different angles?

Question

Given enough movement points to adjust the position of my units, I can attack my enemies from different angles. It looks like each enemy unit just turns to face me anyway, so is there really any point in positioning my troops to attack from different angles?

Answer

No, angle itself doesn't make any difference in terms of damage. Most creatures can only retaliate once per turn though, so there is an advantage to attacking it with multiple creatures during the same turn. It will retaliate against the first attacker, but the rest will be able to do their damage without getting hit back.

Keep in mind that positioning can have other advantages as well. Maybe it puts you close enough to attack a different creature next turn, or blocks an enemy's path (especially useful against large creatures). Or maybe it puts you adjacent to a ranged creature, thus preventing it from using its ranged attack.

Is there any way to access Dynasty Traits in offline mode?

Question

I am playing Might and Magic Heroes VI and have come across Dynasty Traits. It appears that they are not available when playing in offline mode. Is there any way to enable them while in offline mode?

Answer

I don't think so. It's a feature reserved for online so that you can't have it if you crack the game. It's ubisoft baby.

What determines how much structural damage a stack does?

Question

In order to quickly break down the defenses of an enemy town or fort, your creature stacks have the option to attack the door and the walls. Sometimes my creatures do 1 structural point of damage, while at other times they do 2. What determines how much structural damage a creature stack does?

Answer

The damage is determined by the physical size of the unit.

A unit that needs one tile does 1 point of damage. A 2x2 unit does 2 points damage.

Is there any way to turn off the synchronizing of save games?

Question

When Might & Magic: Heroes VI is closed, Ubisoft's Uplay service pops up a window that says "Synchronizing Save Games", which takes a very long time to complete and often fails without any obvious reason. For some time I just accepted the delay as an annoying penalty for legally obtaining my copy of the game.

For the past two nights, the synchronizing has failed every time it occurs, and it is also attempting (and failing) to synchronize whenever I start the game, adding to the delay and my frustration. However, even with the synchronizing failing, I am still able to access my campaign save games and play through them, so it appears that I am connecting to the service properly.

Since the synchronizing does not appear to be working, nor does it appear to be providing me with any benefit, is there some way to turn it off and still play online?

Answer

You can turn off the syncronization in the UPlay settings.

Why can't my sisters heal?

Question

Sometimes when my Sisters turn arrives they can use their heal ability; sometimes they can't. I can't quite figure out when they can and when they can't. Seems they can only use it once per turn, but sometimes even when a fresh turn starts they can't.

Does anybody know the rules behind this thing? Nowhere in the description does it mention any limitation or mana cost or anything...

Answer

They can only use the ability twice per battle. You should see a little number over the skill that tells how many casts you have left for the current battle.

In addition, if your sisters get an extra action due to good morale, they will not be able to use their ability during the extra action. Attacks/movement during the extra action is only 50% of what it would normally be, and you are not allowed to use skills. You can however use the heal as their normal action, and then use the extra action to attack/move as normal.

Heroes VI graphical problem in third Necropolis mission

Question

In the third Necropolis mission, after I take the first Orc Stronghold, when I see the screen that says what artifacts I have won my graphics card appears to reset (both of my monitors reset) and after that the entire Heroes VI screen is invisible, so I cannot play. This happened exactly the same way again after I reloaded from a save. Can I avoid this and still defeat the Orcs?

This graphical glitch has happened before, but the other times it went away when I reloaded from the save.

Answer

Try changing/lowering your graphic-settings. Maybe this avoids the problem. Also updating the driver of the graphic-card is never a bad idea.

What is the significance of these obelisks?

Question

Every map I've played so far seems to have a feature in common: pairs of obelisks that serve as a chokepoint between areas.

enter image description here

The colors vary, but they're always there. Is this just a favorite feature of the map generator, or do they have some additional significance?

Answer

The obelisks that appear on the coasts indicate where you can land a ship.

The obelisks on land appear where one towns territory ends and the next towns territory begins. The color of the obelisk corresponds to the color of the player that currently controls the town (with gray representing a neutral town).

What's the difference between Prime Magic and Arcane Exaltation?

Question

I'm looking at both of these prime spells, and they seem to do almost the same thing. The first claims to award 3 magic power to the hero, while the second claims to award 2 magic power permanently.

What does it mean by that? Is Prime Magic not permanent, thus having to be cast (or something)?

Answer

IIRC,

Prime Magic only awards the bonus to spells in the Prime spell tree (e.g. Implosion)

Arcane Exaltation works for all trees. So if you're a primary Dark Magic user, you can pick up Arcane Exaltation to increase the bonus for your Dark Magic spells.

What is the Might and Magic: Heroes 6 Damage Computation?

Question

Anyone figure out yet how damage is computed?

Heroes 5 used:

Creature Dmg * Stack Size * (1 + (.05 * (Attacker's Attack - Target's Defense)))

Is it still the same for 6?

Answer

There is a fan created Heroes VI manual that contains all the gritty details of the damage calculation. This is not an official manual, so no guarantee it is correct.

Essentially there are two calculations:

Raw Damage = Creature Damage * Stack Size * Attack Modifier

Creature Damage and Stack Size are what you think they are. The Attack Modifier is a separate calculation based upon the hero's Might or Magic Attack value, depending upon the type of damage the creature inflicts. The Raw Damage is calculated as a range, due to the Creature Damage not being a fixed number.

The second calculation brings in the defense of the stack being attacked:

Final Damage = Raw Damage * (100% - Resistance %) * Misc Modifiers

The Misc Modifiers are bonuses given by spells, skills or artifacts (i.e. friendly creatures' ranged attacks deal 8% more damage). Resistance % is calculated in a similar manner to the Attack Modifier using the defending stack's and hero's Might Defense or Magic Defense.

Final Damage is also a range (as Raw Damage was) and the calculation then picks a random integer out of that range for the actual damage caused by the attack.

As to your comment question regarding +3 Might Defense, that does mean +3 to the the Might Defense value, which is turned into a percentage during the Resistance % calculation.

What's the Difference between HOMM VI Online and Offline mode?

Question

What are the differences to the two modes? If I play offline do I get less features than had I played online? The only feature I can think of that I'll be losing are the Conflux orbs, but are there others?

Answer

Since no one's made the attempt to differentiate the two, I decided to try it out for myself.

Features Missing from Offline Mode

  • Conflux Orbs
  • Dynasty Weapons
    • You can still claim them in the Campaign but they're disabled in the inventory screen
  • Dynasty Traits
    • Option appears at the beginning of the game
  • Hero Choices
    • When playing skirmish you get a very limited pool for hero choices (1 might hero, 1 magic hero per race)
  • Daily/Weekly Autosaves

What Effects exist and what does each Effect do?

Question

Many of the skills indicate that they cause an Effect on the target stack. For example, Storm Winds II states that creatures are "inflicted by the "Dazed" effect" and Ice Armor "applies the "Chilled" effect to attackers".

Is there a full list of these Effects and the effect (hah!) they have in the game?

Answer

From the awesome fan manual linked here

Chilled -1 Movement reduction and +20% vulnerability to damage (Fire). Lasts for 1 turn.

Dazed Initiative is decreased by 10. Lasts for 2 turns.

Frozen Movement is reduced to zero and suffers from +20% vulnerability to damage (Fire). Lasts for 1 turn.

Soaked 20% vulnerability to damage (Air). Lasts for 2 turns.

Summoned Initiative of summoned stacks is decreased by 15 for the turn they enter the combat map. They cannot be resurrected and also leave the Hero’s army after the combat.

Where can you find the unit production for a town?

Question

Navigating a town's menu I can't find this information anywhere. Is there a way to see how many of each unit a given town is producing per week?

Answer

In Heroes VI, creature production has been divorced from towns entirely, as recruitment is map-wide. This means, for instance, that "creatures produced by a town per week" is less useful than "creatures produced by your entire realm".

As far as I know, there's only support for the latter - clicking the arrow on the minimap will bring you to the kingdom overview screen, which will show you your current heroes, their armies, and your creature production.

How do you see the specialization of a hired hero?

Question

After you hire a new hero in the Hall of Heroes, how do you see the details of his/her specialization?

When I go into the heroes heroic abilities, I can see the name of the specialization but no description. Is that a bug, or am I looking in the wrong place?

Answer

Currently, the specialization of all heroes is bugged when you attempt to view it from the hero's stat page.

Fortunately enough, for those heroes you hire from the Hall of Heroes, you can simply right-click their specialization to see what it is before you hire them. On the Hall of Heroes page, it should be towards the bottom of the right-side window. I'll add a pic when I can.

Is there a way to view the Dynasty Weapon skills?

Question

Anyone know how to view the dynasty weapon skills? Staff of Sandro has a lot of lich-named skills but there's no indication what those skills do

Answer

A fully detailed description of the dynasty weapon (and each of its 5 leveled abilities) can be seen (counterintuitively) on the Dynasty Hero screen, under the middle sub-tab.

This sub-menu lists all your currently unlocked dynasty weapons, progress towards leveling each of them, and the ability granted each level.

Right-clicking the ability will cause a description of it to appear. Not sure if this is applicable while in a game, but it's readily available from the main menu, at least.
