Identify an arcade 2D shoot 'em up with a metallic dragon or snake

Question

I am trying to remember the name of an old arcade shoot 'em up. I believe it is from the late 1980s and you controlled a snake or dragon or snake-dragon, the creature was possibly metallic. The unique thing about this was that you could use your tail as a shield, i.e. curl up in a ball to protect your head from incoming bullets. I think it was only single-player although there was an option for turn-based two-player.

Answer

Could be Saint Dragon

C64 game where you take over other robots?

Question

Can anyone remember the name of this Commodore 64 game?

The game is set on a spaceship which has been taken over by hostile robots. You have to use your robot to destroy the hostile robots. You take-over / possess hostile robots by playing a mini puzzle game. The game has a series of lights in the middle and you have to change the lights to your colour, you do this by connecting the lights through circuits on your side of the screen. The robot you are trying to take over does the same on its side of the screen.

Some of the robots you take over had guns / lasers that you could use to shoot other robots instead of taking them over.

Other features:

  • Top-down view, robots are circles with a number to indicate model
  • Spaceship has different levels accessed by lifts
  • Levels had different coloured backgrounds, background went dark grey when you cleared the level.

Here's a link to a port of it if you fancy a bit of a replay on Windows or Linux: http://paradroid.sourceforge.net/

I used to love it - great game - although I found it ridiculously difficult. The circuit board minigame was very inventive, especially as the level of the other robot compared with you affected how many moves you could make compared with it.

Higher level robots couldn't be controlled for very long, so you had to keep switching from one robot to the next.

I almost completed the ship once, but I think there were another 7 ships or something to do afterwards!

Top-down shooter with 2D gameplay and 3D graphics, Linux demo was available

Question

I remember playing this game sometime between 2003 and 2006.

It was a top-down shmup (shoot-em-up) game with full 3D graphics.

I think it had some camera settings, so the camera could position itself in an angle, instead of straight top-down (not very sure about this camera setting; but it certainly had a straight top-down view).

The level where the game was played had some kind of "platform". It was not just a ship floating freely on space, it was "hovering" on a limited platform (that was slightly bigger than the screen, as far as I remember).

The level included in the demo had an awesome yellow robotic spider that would open its body to shoot a powerful laser. Sometimes the spider would also jump up and land at the platform again (and if your ship was below it, too bad for you).

Due to the limited platform thing where the game was played, the player ship could switch sides, so it could either be shooting to the right or to the left.

I slightly remember having two types of ships, or two types of weapons, but I'm really not sure about this. It might be wrong.

I remember it had a Linux demo, and that was the version I played.

I remember it came with one of the first versions of "Kurumin Games" live-CD, which also came with Quake 3 Demo. (yeah, I've already looked at the list of games from Kurumin Games 1.3, but it doesn't seem to be any of those games - it probably was from an earlier release of Kurumin Games)

I played it on a Pentium III 800MHz with 256MB of RAM and nVidia RivaTNT2 video card, and it had great graphics for that time.

This Astro Tripper screenshot is very similar to how the game I am looking for was played. But Astro Tripper is not the game.

Answer

It was Space Tripper?

Can you name an early 1990s tank based shooting game on Macintosh System 7.5?

Question

There was a very simple tank shooting game that came out in the early 1990s for Macintosh System 7.5 (I was able to run it on System 7).

I only have some very random memories about it; anyone have an idea on what it was called?

Game features:

  • Tank shooter, in a fixed arena (squared box).
  • Internal and aerial view of tank.
  • Wire frame mode for slower Macs.

Game objective:

  • Score points for destroyed enemy tanks, within a counting down round time.

Answer

Thanks to @tzenes suggestion of 'Battlezone' that looked similar in the wire frame mode, but not quite what I remember.

In the 'list of clones' I was able to go through and discover, the game I was thinking of:

It was...

It looks to be available for purchase on the iPhone too:

A vertical scrolling shoot 'em up, where you can reverse the scrolling

Question

I'm looking for a game I remember playing as a kid on a PC (I think) and my Game Boy (early 90s), but I can't recall its name.

  • It was definitely a vertical scrolling shoot 'em up, where you could reverse the scrolling a bit. In some levels you needed this in order to escape dead ends.

  • The enemies where organic. Giant monsters instead of enemy ships.

  • There was an ugly alien shopkeeper where you could buy power-ups between levels.

  • Some of the power-ups would then show up as sidekicks next to the player ship.

Answer

Xenon 2 - Megablast.

Apparently its creators are offering a free download of a remake over at http://www.bitmap-brothers.co.uk/our-games/past/xenon2.htm
