Is it possible to get the “Catch” achievement on PC?

Question

While looking around for information on other achievements, I've found this one that doesn't show up in the Steam achievements list. Thinking that it was a "secret" achievement, I've tried to do as said in the comments,

throwing a remote batarang to Azrael.

He caught it, but no achievement popped up. Am I missing something? Is "Catch" a Xbox-only achievement?

Asked by Kappei

Answer

Looking at the Steam achievement list, it seems indeed the PC version of the game doesn't have the Catch achievement or equivalent.

How do I glide in “Batman: Arkham City” during the “Demon Trials”?

Question

I am playing Batman: Arkham City on the PC (Windows). I am stuck on the Demon Trials level where one has to follow a blue path through the air by alternating between gliding and dive bombing.

I have looked online, and everywhere says the same thing. One simply holds down W+Space to glide, and W+Space+Left CTRL to dive bomb. So, essentially, one should just hold down W+Space the whole time, and switch between holding down the Left CTRL and not holding it down, in order to dive bomb or not, respectively.

However, every single time, I start in glide mode, then I do a dive bomb, and as soon as I let go of the Left CTRL button, Batman stops gliding and plummets to the ground like a bag of wet cement.

I have read some things that seem to indicate pulling back (or forward) on the mouse makes a difference, but not as far as I've experienced. I've also tried every variation I can think of for how I switch between keys and which ones I hold down in what order, but nothing makes a difference.

How can I get Batman to glide and dive bomb using a PC keyboard and mouse as is necessary to pass this level?

Asked by Dave M G

Answer

It could be your keyboard and key combinations that's causing problems.

The key here is to never release the glide button (Space) and you don't necessarily have to hold forward (W) IIRC. Hold forward and glide (W + Space) to start the initial jump off the ledge and gliding. While gliding, make sure you're holding the glide button (Space) to keep on gliding. The movement buttons (W, S, A and D I assume) controls your pitch and yaw (fly up/down, left/right).

Every once in a while, you'll need to dive-bomb to not only follow the path but also gain some needed momentum. While gliding, hold the dive-bomb button (Ctrl) and don't release the glide button! After diving for a while and gaining speed, release (only) the dive-bomb button and fly upward (S or W if inverted flight is off) to gain more altitude. The speed you got in the dive should allow you to fly back up close to the height you started diving but you'll be gliding forward a bit faster. And repeat as necessary.

Assuming you're doing all this and not releasing the glide button at any point, you should be fine. If you still stop gliding after releasing the dive-bomb button, try changing your glide button to a different key and see if that makes a difference. Try Alt as it's a modifier key and should be able to be combined with most other keys (though Ctrl + W + Space and possibly A/D shouldn't cause problems on most keyboards today).

Arkham City 'full screen on' does not fill the screen

Question

Running Radeon HD6800, Win7 64-bit Home Premium - cannot get rid of black border around the game on fullscreen.

Arkham Asylum did not have this problem. DX9 and DX11 both have the problem. Resolution changes make no difference.

Also, the benchmark process hangs when it gets to 'Hit Esc to finish' (not a blocking issue).

AMD software is at Catalyst 12.3 - 12.4 upgrade appears to work but when you check for updates again, it downloads repeatedly.

Answer

You need to adjust the resolution of the game to fit your screen perfectly.

I can't suggest which would be best as I do not know what type of screen you have, what your current resolution is, etc.

What I can suggest, however, is going through each resolution setting/option and applying it to see which fits the best.

Is there a point to destroying Mr. Freeze's wives?

Question

In New Game Plus I finally beat Mr. Freeze, but this time I noticed that there were various statues of Nora around that I could destroy with a baterang or by dodging when he shot at me with one behind me. I tried destroying all that I could find, but it didn't seem to do anything. Is there a point to them or are they just eye candy?

Asked by Ullallulloo

Answer

During the fight, destroying the Nora statues irritates Freeze and indicates to him where you are. This could be used to draw him to a statue location and setup an attack.

How do you tell the good inmates apart from the bad inmates?

Question

A fair bit of the side-quests I've started in Batman: Arkham City are given by political prisoners usually by themselves on some roof. However, some thugs also like to sit by themselves on a roof, so more than once I've just walked up to them like they're someone nice then had to beat them down.

The run-of-the-mill inmate shows up as blue on Detective Vision, just like the political prisoners, so I don't see any easy way to tell them apart. Their posture seems to vary as well, but both can slouch, etc.

Is this not really a problem as you continue on (they're so rare)? Or rather, should I just assume everyone's bad and sneak up on them like a real Batman?

Asked by Nick T

Answer

When a political prisoner appear, they usually will be being robbed by some thug. You can tell the difference by just watching who is afraid and who is not.

So it's fair to assume that everyone is bad until proven contrary.

Is it possible to re-enter the Joker's factory to get the Titan canister?

Question

After getting drugged by Joker and being sent on the Mr. Freeze mission is it possible to re-enter the Joker's factory to get the Titan canister inside. I've not been able to find a re-entry point.

Thanks in advance.

Asked by Ivan L

Answer

The first time you enter the Steel Mill, you go in via an upper entrance and down into the smelter. The second time, you enter through a back door near the water.

Once you've completed the second pass through the Steel Mill, you can re-enter through this door as many times as you like, but you'll probably have to fight the guards outside again. Further, it's kind of a long trek through the factory to find most of the stuff inside. (especially getting back to the arena you fight in early in your first trip)

Luckily, the Titan canister is near the entrance. However, if you're going back through to collect all the trophies, I'd recommend waiting until you have all the gadgets so that you only have to make this trip once.

This video is a little shaky, but it shows a picture of the map, so you can see the area of the map you need to get to in order to find this door:

How can I skip to a certain point in the game?

Question

When Arkham City was released, there was a bug that when you exit the game your savegame files disappear.

I heard about the problem and I played the game without exiting. At that point the fix was unknown, but now it is solved. I already played most of the game but at one point the game just had to crash.

I fixed the problem now but I don't want to play all over again. I'm looking for a way to skip directly to that point in the game (somewhere around battling Mr. Freeze).

Up to now I've found savegames for PS3 (I have the PC version), and tried cheats from Arkham Asylum(modified), but neither helped.

Asked by Arremer

Answer

The short answer is that there is no way to skip to a specific part of the game through any official cheat or function built into the game.

The only way that anyone has had moderate success in reaching a point in the game without earning it is through save game sharing. This solution is not without problems.

I've quoted the relevant issue from a post on the Steam Forums regarding this save swapping issue:

Your actual save files are stored in Steam\userdata\\57400\remote. However, the catch is, these files are encrypted using a special key. This key is generated when you first log in to Games for Windows Live on your PC. However, despite being generated when you log in, if you logged in on a different computer or cleared your GFWL data on your computer and re-logged in, it would make a different key, thus invalidating your save files.

The proposed solution and follow up discussion is here: http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2331974

Be aware the solution did not work for everyone, and should be regarded as experimental.

What's the deal with the cure delivery on the rooftop in Arkham City?

Question

So I've been playing Arkham City recently. Near the beginning of the game,

The Joker poisons Batman.

Much of the rest of the game is spent

searching for the cure to the poison. At one point, you get a call from Alfred, who tells you that Lucius Fox has synthesized a cure and it's Coming Soon To A Rooftop Near You. Sure enough, the cure is in a delivery capsule just like the ones that brought me the BatSuit and the Turbo Grapple, but when Batman injects the cure, he passes out and wakes up at the Mad Hatter's Tea Party. The supposed cure is never mentioned again and the rest of the game centers around finding more cure?

What did I miss?

Asked by Steve V.

Answer

It's all part of Mad Hatter's delusion.

Mad Hatter specializes in hypnotic suggestion. We are told that finding a cure may take time and suddenly Batman receives a call that the cure is ready, only to find that it's actually a sedative. What happened is that by some sort of hypnosis , Batman is led to believe that whole part - the call, the delivery, taking the cure, etc. What probably happened is that the hatter planted a syringe with the poison at this location and led Batman there. (I don't believe we actually can tell when that hypnosis takes place but we do get a glimpse of the hatter when Batman rescues Vicky Vale, so it might have happened then)

What are the cues that enemies are going to attack you in Plus Mode?

Question

I got tempted to attempt 100% completion on Arkham City, and, wow, not having the little squiggly lines coming off enemies when they're about to attack makes the game really, really hard. I'm to the point of the Penguin mini-boss fight, and there's just. no. way for me to get through it. I can't even survive half-way through the first round. Now, I realize that trends in gaming are such that harder and more-clever is all the rage, but this is just what I feared when I started this playthrough: hitting a point that's so hard that it simply stops me from playing the game any more. I'm trusting this isn't what the designers intended, and assuming that I'm just missing something about the mechanics of the game. Is there some way to offset not having those indicators? Are there little cues that can tell me that someone's about to take a swing that I'm missing? I can tell sometimes by the way they "step up," but in a big crowd of people, it's easy to miss one doing this. Plus, the people wielding a weapon typically don't do this. I can't seem to find ANY video of this fight on YouTube, which makes me wonder if it's even humanly possible to finish (without cheating).

Asked by David Krider

Answer

There aren't any as nice as the attack indicators you get during easy/normal play through. You have to watch and learn the indicators/movements that someone is about to punch, kick, or otherwise attack you. They do things like:

  • Pull there arm back before throwing a punch or slicing with a knife.
  • Take an attack stance.
  • Start to lift there leg for a kick.

It is definitely more challenging and requires more attention and detailed pattern matching. It takes awhile, but you'll slowly start to get better.

Here are some of my strategies:

  • Attack isolated inmates first, or small groups of isolated inmates. Use Evade to quickly move around the group, moving away from any cramped quarters. Don't let yourself get surrounded. There are too many inmates to watch and keep track of.
  • The Batwing Swarm is also a good move to use frequently. It stuns and isolates inmates, giving you time and space to attack.
  • Finally, Batman can't be attacked during the Takedown move, and enemies don't get back up after receiving it, so use it every chance you get.

Good luck!

How can I fix the Batsuit?

Question

As I played through the campaign, Batman started looking a bit rough around the edges. His cape is torn, and he's got tons of damage to his Batsuit. I realize this is all cosmetic, but now that I've finished the campaign I'd kind of like to get him back to "mint condition NRFB Batman A++++" condition.

I know there are some "alternate Bataman" skins floating around as well (mostly through pre-order and DLC bonuses, I assume) that I could switch to, so I assume there's got to be some sort of "skin menu" I'm missing here.

Besides calling Alfred and asking for the world's toughest sewing kit, how do I "fix" Batman's outfit?

Answer

Short of switching into another suit (gotten through a preorder bonus, or through DLC), there is no way to repair the suit.

Beating the game unlocks the option to change into other suits, however, you can only change costumes before you start playing. When you choose either "Continue Story" or "Continue New Game +" you get the option to change your suit. You will also get the option to change suits in the challenge modes.

How do you enable Big Head mode?

Question

In Batman: Arkham City, there is apparently a secret big head mode. How is that mode enabled on each platform?

Answer

Kotaku describes how to access this easter egg:

It's very easy to do. You have to [have finished the game] on normal or hard, or on New Game+ (Which you can't unlock by completing the game on easy, anyway.) At any point in the game, take out Batman's Cryptographic Sequencer. While holding down both RT and LT (or, I presume, R2 and L2 on PS3), begin to rotate your left thumbstick clockwise and your right thumbstick counter-clockwise. After doing that for a few seconds, you'll notice that the Dark Knight's chin has gotten a good deal…chinnier.

You can also watch the Rooster Teeth video (great channel for achievements and easter eggs, by they way!):

On the PC, it's a bit different. You don't seem to need the cryptographic sequencer. The key combination is:

U,U,U,D,D,D,L,L,R,L,L,U,U,D

or in WASD:

W,W,W,S,S,S,A,A,D,A,A,W,W,S

And here's a video:

At what milestones do I get to tackle a Riddler puzzle room?

Question

Periodically, I'll get a notification that I can use the Enigma machine to determine the location of one of Riddler's hostages. This seems tied to the number of the Riddler challenges I've completed in the game so far.

What are the milestones I have to reach for each hostage room?

I'd also really like to bust the Riddler before I hang up my cape and cowl. What percentage of the challenges do I need to conquer before I can wrap this case up?

Catwoman also has some Riddler challenges associated with her - how do these factor in? Must I do them as well? Can I do some instead?

Answer

The first hostage is accessible after getting the enigma machine from the Courthouse.

The rest are tied to number of Riddler challenges finished/trophies collected:

  • 80 - Second room
  • 160 - Third room
  • 240 - Fourth room
  • 320 - Fifth room
  • 400 - Last room

There are 400 total challenges/trophies available to Batman. If you have the Catwoman DLC, she has 40 available to her. In total, there can be 440 possible challenges/trophies to collect.

You can mix and match any of these to get to the next milestones. I ended up getting all the Catwoman ones early, so I hadn't finished all of Batman's when I got the last hostage. You only have to have 90.1% of them if you have the DLC, otherwise, you have to get 100%.

How do I get to Riddler's second hostage in the Enigma Conundrum side mission?

Question

I've rescued Riddler's first hostage from the courthouse, and gone to the location of the second hostage, outside the Black Canary. However, I've search all over the building and can't find any doors or other entrances. How do I get in the building with the second hostage? Or do I have to go somewhere else?

Answer

Look for a green question mark on the wall. You should be able to walk up to it and break through the wall to reveal a door hidden behind it.

How do I use smoke pellets in the Search and Destroy campaign?

Question

To earn the Smoke Detector medal in the Search and Destroy campaign, I have to

Use the Smoke Pellet to create a smoke cloud and take down a henchman as he panics in the smoke.

I've hit twice on the D-pad to select the smoke pellet, but pressing L1 throws the batarang. Holding down L1 doesn't seem to work either. How do I use the smoke pellet? Is it a future gadget upgrade?

Answer

You can toss a smoke pellet in the following ways:

  • Tapping triangle while under fire
  • Choosing it, aiming with L1 and tossing with R1
  • Tapping R2 while aiming with L1

You can always review the controls by going into the WayneTech menu and choosing Smoke Pellet under Gadgets

I am only 70% complete, but have finished all the side missions, what am I missing?

Question

I have finished all secondary campaigns in Batman: Arkham City (including Riddler trophies/challenges) and have almost everything (level 41), but am only 70% complete. What major things could I be missing?

Answer

To reach 100% completion you also have to complete New Game Plus, which is harder. You won't have to redo all the side missions though, as they carry over.

In Arkham Asylum, are there Riddler informers?

Question

In Batman: Arkham City there are "green" criminals that you can interrogate for the Riddler's stuff.

Are these same green criminals available for interrogating in Batman: Arkham Asylum?

Answer

In Arkham Asylum there are Riddler maps instead of the Riddler informants that are in Arkham city. The maps serve the same purpose, but are slightly more difficult to find as they don`t stick out as much as the green henchmen do.

How can I always enable the tutorial popups for Batman's special combos?

Question

I always miss Batman's "special combos" enabled by keys like R,T,Y etc.

Is there a way to always display the tutorial messages?

Every time I play, I manually activate the tutorial with Ctrl-Right, but the next time I start the game it's off again.

Answer

Well, you can enable them from the WayneTech page. And obviously, you can't enable two special combo tutorials, because they all happen when your combo reaches x8. Just enable your favorite combo tutorial.

What determines Batman's movements when gliding?

Question

When you are pulling out of a dive, what factors determine whether or not you will pull upwards (thus gain some more height) or just glide forwards?

Answer

From personal experience, it will try to keep a somewhat parabolic pattern, sticking you back just a little lower than the height you originally dove from. It seems that there's a sort of timeout on this though, and if you dive for too long you won't be able to reach the same height.

With a small amount of practice, it's pretty easy to find the "sweet spot" for how far you can dive and still come to the nearly the same height you were at before.

How to get this trophée blocked by a destructible wall?

Question

I can't destroy this destructible wall placed on top of me.

This is about at the start of wonder city

Answer

You need to glide off the opposite side, and use the grapnel boost to grapple to the top edge and crash into the destructible roof to break it. You can then use the Batclaw to pick up the trophy as normal.
