What are the different worlds' size in Terraria?

Question

In Terraria, you can choose the world's size when creating a new one.

The current version of the game offers three choices : small, medium and large.

What is the size of the world for each option (in blocks)?

Asked by astryad

Answer

A quick little table of world dimensions in tile sizes

  • Small - (1200,4200)
  • Medium - (1800,6300)
  • Large - (2400,8400)

These dimensions were retrieved via the Map Renderer tool from the Terraria Online forums.

Hope this helps

Is there a way to change my spawn point in Terraria?

Question

In Terraria, I built a house a little ways away from where I spawn. But, when I re-join/ respawn, it puts me back at that spawn point, which gets very annoying. Is there a way to move my spawn point?

Share Multiplayer World

Question

A buddy and I have been playing Terraria together in a joint world. I hosted and so I have the world and can play in single player when he's not around. He'd like to do the same, is this possible?

I doubt we could both play it and then have it sync up the changes, but is there a way to send him the world file and then when we go to play together copy it back or something along those lines?

My solution:

I have used a combination of the answers below to make this game even more awesome. First I setup a Dedicated server as mentioned by OrigamiRobot. This was super simple and meets my requirements perfectly. I don't mind leaving my computer on all the time with this running. To do this I also had to do a couple of other things unique to my situation:

  • Setup a static route in my router for port 7777 to the machine where I am running the dedicated server
  • Registered with DynDNS.org to get a domain name to be used with my dynamic IP Address
  • I setup the DynDNS account in my router and I was good to go (This is needed so that my friend can ping the domain name and get my current ip address should it change in the future).

Doing that took care of my need to share the world file without us having to sync it between run times.

Looking at the other answers, Kissaki provided me with the folders I needed, and I used flying sheep's answer about symlinks along with Tom Wijsman's suggestion of using DropBox to share my player folder. I use the dedicated server to hold onto the world, but putting my player folder in dropbox allows me to play as the same character regardless of which of my machines I am using.

Asked by theChrisKent

Answer

At the bottom of www.terraria.org there is a link for the dedicated server. If you run that on your computer, he can connect to the world whenever your computer is on.

http://terraria.wikia.com/wiki/Server_Console can help set this up.

Can Rocket Boots be found in Chests?

Question

One of the few items I have yet to obtain in Terraria is a pair of rocket boots.

Common wisdom is that they drop from the goblin invasions that occur every so often. Scuttlebutt says they also spawn in chests on floating islands or in dungeons.

I have scoured both wikis, but the only mention of finding rocket boots in chests is in this youtube video:

Obviously, if rocket boots can't be found in chests I shouldn't waste my time finding floating islands or battling Skeletron, so I am looking for some independent confirmation that they are a possible chest item in the first place (Or at least some volume of proof more than a single mention in a single youtube video).

Asked by Raven Dreamer

Answer

No, the Rocket Boots can not be found in any chests, don't drop from shadow orbs or bosses...

Are there any background walls which are immune to explosives?

Question

Explosives are powerful. Maybe a little too powerful for my liking.

I've set up a trap where mobs fall into a pit of explosive proof material (in this case, mythril ore), where I'm free to throw dynamite or bombs to my heart's content.

However, I want there to be a background wall so that mobs won't spawn inside the pit while it's closed off (using active/inactive stone blocks).

So far all my attempts have failed with the background being blown clean off the sky.

Is there a wall that will remain in place even if dynamite goes off right in front of it?

Asked by Mr Smooth

Answer

I'm pretty sure the answer is no. The only background walls completely impervious to anything are world-generated, unsafe walls (unless the blast reaches a hole in the wall, or an edge). However, these, by design, cannot be placed by the player at all, and in any case do not prevent monster spawns.

It looks like you're out of luck here. Bombs and Dynamite can blow up any player-placed wall.

Can monsters open doors that are not on ground level?

Question

Currently my house is a multi-storey tower with the outside door on the second floor, where I can jump and open/close the door (and then enter). Could a zombie during a Blood Moon (or any other door-capable monster) do the same to enter the house?

Asked by Gwen

Answer

Baseline answer: A mob (evil NPC) must be standing on the same level as the door to open the door.

Mobs can jump but will generally only do a large jump if the player is near by. So while it may be possible for them to do so, it is not entirely likely. The thing I would be concerned about is when the monsters spawn on the ledges because you just happen to be standing at the right spot to make it a valid spawn location. Putting in good NPCs will help with this a bit, but its still a concern.

Here is a picture of my last base (well, two towers out of it, it expands more to the left with a couple more buildings). All the doors seen in the picture are mob safe, they are up one block from the standing level the mob will be on, and there is nothing for the mob to jump to as long as the door is closed. There is one weak spot on the right hand tower, if you look at the internal doors on the right side of it, they are on the level with the flooring.. So if a mob can get through the lower right hand door (which is offset properly mind you) then they can jump to to any level and start running havoc! Mob Safe Doors

Hope this helps!

Why are these blocks unbreakable?

Question

I'm in the corruption, and I noticed that the rock here is indestructible. Why?

Unbreakable rock

The block type I'm facing can't be destroyed

Asked by Codemonkey

Answer

That is ebonstone and it can only be broken with higher tier pickaxes.

From your screenshot, it looks like you have either an iron pickaxe or a silver pickaxe, neither of which are strong enough to destroy the ebonstone.

It is possible to destroy before you obtain the higher tier pickaxes using one of these methods:

  • Dynamite
    • You can find dynamite in chests, or buy it from the Demolitionist if you have managed to get him to move in yet
  • Purification powder
    • You can buy this from the Dryad if you have managed to get her to move in yet; after using the powder on the ebonstone, you will be able to mine the stone normally with your current pickaxe
Answered by jaminja

Why is this not an acceptable spawn location?

Question

I can't wrap my head around it. Right clicking this bed doesn't give the "Spawn point set" message.

Spawn location

Asked by Codemonkey

Answer

As far as I know, you need to have a door for a house to register as a house, and no "open" spaces or gaps in the outer walls. If you look to the left of the building you're in, you have a small gap on the floor where you have the bed. Try to cover it and, theoretically, it should work.

Can you still change night and day in Terraria?

Question

I thought you could change night/day by dragging moon or sun, but I can't seem to do that anymore?

Answer

As far as I know you can only change the time of day if you are the host of a server.

There's another related question you could have a look at: How do I sleep or skip nights?.

The Eye of Cthulhu disappeared after I reloaded the game. Is there a way to get it back?

Question

I was playing Terraria earlier, having just reached the Hell layer (~3000ft.) and after I killed one of those annoying imps, I got a message stating:

You feel an evil presence is watching you.

I read on the official Terraria Online forums that it means the Eye of Cthulhu is about to spawn at the surface. Unfortunately, after receiving the message, I saved the game and quit to look online for that message means (while still in Hell). When I reloaded the game and spawned at the surface, during night-time, Cthulhu wasn't there.

Is there any way to get the Eye back?

Answer

It is possible to spawn the Eye of Cthulhu by using a Suspicious Looking Eye.

This item needs to be crafted from 6 lenses. Lenses are occasionally dropped by Demon Eyes (the flying eyes that attack at night along with zombies).

Once you have collected 6 lenses you will need to find a Demon Altar in order to craft the Suspicious Looking Eye. You will probably have to do a bit of searching underground in order to find one of these if you haven't already found one.

Note that in order to summon the Eye of Cthulhu it must be night time. If dawn breaks while fighting the Eye, it will fly away to return the next night with full health.

Is there any way to get a snow biome without generating a new map?

Question

Just as the title says, is there any way that I can get a snow biome without generating a fresh map in Terraria?

Answer

You just need an area with a large number of snow blocks, around 500 will get you the most snow, any more should be unnecessary.

You can use programs like TEdit to edt you map to have enough blocks. Or you can put them in your inventory using TerrariViewer and place them manually.

How can you make an NPC move house?

Question

Is there any way to move an NPC from one house to another in Terraria?

Answer

You would need to

  • Destroy his old house and build the other one (he will go to the new house when it becomes night if the distance isn't to far)

  • Destroy his old house and build the other one and hope that the same type (merchant, gun dealer etc.) will respawn

We once had 2 merchants; when we tried to get a Demolitionist, we killed 1 merchant and got another 1; after we killed that one, we finally got the Demolitionist.

P.S. You only need to hammer away the chair and table to destroy his house

How can I continuously explore in Terraria?

Question

I'm playing Terraria again with the 1.0.6 update so I started a new world for a fresh experience. Unfortunately, I'm running into the same frustrations I've hit before when exploring. Starting from spawn where my crafting/containers/npcs are, I head out to explore vertically (though it applies horizontally too, I suppose) and follow natural caves looking for chests/hearts/etc with the eventual goal of mining some hellstone from the Underworld. Eventually I get close to death/filled up on items/bored and I use my mirror to return home, losing my progress underground in the process. Now I have to find my way back down to where I was while being bothered by all these low level monsters in the process, and it takes a significant amount of time.

Do I really have to walk all the way down to continue exploring where I left off? Is there a better way to explore far away places without having to bore myself with the trip to get there (the second time)?

Answer

From 1.1 With Love

Spawn Switching

By using a on/off wire trigger block you can effectively "open" your bed's wall and invalidate the room it's in, leading you to spawn back at the middle of your world. If you're close enough (wiring only works for 2000 blocks or so) you can just hook up a switch at your spawn that'll change the blocks again and allow you to spawn back at your home base. Otherwise, you might be able to coax a contraption with a statue spawner/pressure plate/lava block to toggle it for you automatically.

This post on the TerrariaOnline forums in particular has an interesting bird-based reset circuit that seems to be fairly popular, but you'll need a bird spawner.

Digging the hard way

From your main base, just dig a hole straight down (the classic "Hellevator", if you will). When you get tired of exploring your caves, just start digging left/right towards your shaft. It'll take a while, but you'll at least probably find some goodies (more caves, ores...) on the way, and getting back will be a lot easier. You can even use a depth meter to align all your "escape routes" to the same depth, so that eventually you can just have one long path across the world that speeds up travel.

Previously, on Terraria...

A trick that worked in 1.0.5 was to start up a multiplayer server and explore with a friend (or just explore with two characters locally), then follow the instructions:

  1. Build a room with a bed. A room isn't necessarily required, but will keep the other person safe. It's best to put the bed in a corner.
  2. Set your spawn point to the bed.
  3. Break the bed and use a mirror. Logging out might work but I don't make any promises.
  4. Do whatever you need at your spawn point. When you're done, let your friend know.
  5. Put the bed back down in the exact same spot. This is important.
  6. Use the mirror again.

If you did it properly, you should travel back to where the bed is. This might not work in 1.0.6, though, and it's only good for exploring together -- if either of you get separated, you'll have to travel back manually.

If you're exploring solo, your only real option is just to take the time to improve the path. Wooden platforms over minor gaps and flattening out bumps will help a lot with horizontal movement, and creating a double shaft with a soft landing area (e.g. water) on one side and a wooden platform tower on the other will make vertical travel easier. Using background walls other than dirt will also stop the enemies from spawning.

Will a Mana Flower auto-consume Restoration Potions?

Question

I was reading about some of the items that can be crafted with a Tinkerer's Workshop and saw that a Mana Flower will enable "auto-consumption of any mana-restoring items." Will this cause Restoration Potions to be consumed also? If so, it seems like a way to restore HP while avoiding the limitation of Potion Sickness.

Answer

The Mana Flower will select restoration potions to refill mana... but only if you don't have the potion sickness debuff in the first place.

This means it will not let you bypass the cooldown on health restoration items.

Are there any Terraria biomes that can't be transplanted to another location in the world?

Question

I've figured out that certain biomes in Terraria can be transplanted - mine or collect enough materials from the original biome (for instance mud blocks and jungle grass seeds) and then plant them somewhere else at the right altitude (above or below ground). The biome should then take root and the biome's own monsters, music and background will appear. The corrupt and hallow biomes even spread on their own in hardmode.

Are there any biomes that can't be replicated just by transplanting tiles? If I use a pickaxe and hammer to steal a bunch of bricks and wall sections from the dungeon, could I make my own dungeon somewhere else and get dungeon enemies to spawn? What about the ocean biome? Do I just need sand and a big enough body of water for sharks to appear, or will they only spawn near the edge of the map?

Answer

Pretty much all of the biomes (using Terraria's liberal definition of "biome") can be moved to another location, within certain limits.

The most extreme example is a Meteor crash site biome, which can exist anywhere, at any height. At the other end of the spectrum, we have the Dungeon, which cannot be moved at all.

Completely immovable

  • The Dungeon, because it requires an unsafe background wall below the Dirt Wall depth (cannot be placed by the player).
  • The Underworld, which is restricted to the very bottom of the map
  • The Sky, which, like the Underworld, is just there at a certain altitude.

Mostly immovable

  • The Ocean is not completely immovable, but very inflexible. It is both restricted to a certain height (above the surface level), and can only exist within 250 blocks from either edge of the map. You can create an artificial Ocean in the middle of the map, but that won't spawn Sharks, nor will it grow Corals. Creating artificial Oceans that sort of float above the real one does work; I have actually done so to farm Corals.

Is there a way to save a map without also exiting it?

Question

Is there a way to save a Terraria map without also exiting the map? Last night I was victim to a power outage that lost me a lot of work. I'd like to avoid this in the future, but it seems overly complicated to be forced to exit just to save my progress. Ideally, there would be some sort of autosave solution that doesn't require me to remember (since I probably won't), but anything's better than having to exit and open the map again just to save.

Answer

In Terraria 1.0.4 devs added an auto save option:

  • Added an option to automatically save the world every 10 minutes. Defaults to on.

enter image description here
