Can I take snapshots (~savegames) of the current game in the Nintendo Wii emulator?

Question

I'm replaying old SNES games and right now the Boss of DK Contry 2 (King K. Rool) gets the best of me. I always die just shortly before the end and have to replay the whole thing all over again. I have 90+ lives, so that's not an issue, I'm just tired of repeating the same thing over and over (I know, it's pathetic).

Asked by bitmask

Answer

The answer is shortly "No."

Appart from the save features that are present in the games themselves, the Wii's Virtual Console does not offer any savegame features.

The closest thing that it has is Suspended Play, that is available for most Virtual Console games (I belive Nintendo 64 and Neo Geo games are exluded). If you open the Home menu while in game, your gamestate will be saved and you can safely exit the game and resume where you left off when you start the game next time.

However, this feature prevents, by design, the kind of functionality that you are looking for.
Once you restart the game, the suspension data is deleted automaticly. What's more, it cannot be copied for safekeeping using Wii's operating system. That is, you can not copy it to your SD card and the copy it back after you loose to the boss.

I belive it would be theoreticly possible to use this state data to resume from certain point in game, but doing so would require rather drastic measures and I wouldn't recommend even trying them for something like this.

I've heard that the boss can be a tough nut to crack, but I'm afraid that you'll just have to endure it and keep practicing. You'll get it eventually.

How do you get up the endless stairs on Super Mario 64 for Nintendo 64?

Question

Do you need a certain amount of Stars or is there another way?

Answer

Once you have 70 stars, the staircase is no longer endless and you reach the door at the top.

Or the long jump trick to reach the top of the staircase without 70 stars is:

Do a long jump away from the stairs, then tilt the control stick up. Mario should still be doing long jumps and facing you, but at the same time going up the stairs instead of down. Press the jump button as fast as you can, and Mario will eventually make it up the stairs.

P.S.-- in the DS version the only way to do it, if even possible is to use a mod like action replay to have all the stars {in which case you will already have 70} so there is absolutely no way to do it becasue DS makes it impossible

Second Quest in Legend of Zelda for the Wii

Question

Does the Legend of Zelda version available from the Wii's Virtual Console service feature the "second Quest" that was accessible once you either completed the game once (or put ZELDA as your name when you started the game)?

Answer

According to Wikipedia:

The Virtual Console release of The Legend of Zelda (NES) uses the updated version featured in 2003's The Legend of Zelda: Collector's Edition compilation for the GameCube. While the gameplay is identical to the 1986 original, this release includes the save screen from the Famicom Disk System version, as well as an updated translation of the introduction screen.

Furthermore, I can find no reference stating that the "Second Quest" has been removed. I would logically conclude that if there is no reference regarding it being taken away, it should be in the game.

We retro-gamers never take modifications to original games lightly.

How do I safely sell a Wii with VC games on it?

Question

I want to sell my Wii with the VC games included, but am afraid there might be some personal info on the system somewhere.

If I delete my shop account & format the system memory, will the next owner be able to re-download the games free?

If I leave the VC games on there, is there any reason to worry? I looked at my account activity and saw the last 4 of my CC#. Can anything be done with that?

Answer

You can't wipe your Wii without wiping the VC games, and they can't download them without having full access to your Wii Shop account and any credit card information it stores.

You can't sell a Wii with VC installed without handing the buyer considerable amounts of personal and financial information.

It's also, aside from that, against the licensing of VC content to resell it: it's explicitly non-transferable when you buy it. As a consequence, it will come as no surprise that Nintendo has set up the system such that you can't clear personal info off a Wii in preparation for reselling it without also wiping the Wii Shop downloads.

The ending for Super Mario World (Wii Virtual-Console)

Question

I recently just beat the game on the Wii Virtual Console and the ending was just Mario, the Princess, and Luigi standing there. Does nothing else happen?

Answer

After the credits roll and Mario/Luigi, Peach, and Yoshi make it all the way back to "Yoshi's House" and the eggs hatch, it shifts to the tableau of Mario, Luigi, and Peach (that you mention).

For the SNES and virtual console version of this game, that's all there is to it -- there's no new game plus option, and no way to save the game after beating bowser. The Gameboy advance version of Super Mario World (It was rereleased as Super Mario Advance 2: Super Mario World ) however, featured additional content after the game ended while collecting all the dragon coins. But, as this was specific to the gameboy advance port of the game, yes, that final tableau is really the end.

Edit: Actually, I'm not positive about the GBA port. It depends on whether or not Bowser's castle level has dragon coins, I suppose.

What are the locations of the Warp Zones in Super Mario Bros.?

Question

In which levels are the Warp Zones located in Super Mario Bros. and how do you get to them?

Answer

  • Level 1-2: Warp to World 2, 3, or 4
  • Level 4-2: Warp to World 6, 7, or 8
  • Level 4-2: Warp to Word 5 (Yes, there are two on this level)

The following detail came from this site.

Where to find warp zone #1 hidden in level 1-2

You will find the first Warp Zone located at the end of level 1-2. In order to reach it, you will need to ride the previous elevator to the top and then jump onto the brick ceiling. Run all the way to your right and you will find the Warp Zone. Enter the corresponding Pipe to skip to world’s 2, 3 or 4.

Where to find warp zone #2 hidden in level 4-2

This level contains two Warp Zones, one to level 5 located at the end of the level, and this Warp Zone that takes you to levels 6, 7 and 8 located in the middle of the level. To find this Warp Zone look for a high three-brick-long platform that is too high for you to reach, located across from the first elevator platform. There are some invisible blocks that you will need to make appear in order to reach the far left block, which contains a vine. You need to hit the invisible blocks from below to create a staircase allowing you to reach the Vine. To do this, make the first two lower blocks on the righter side appear. They will start to create a staircase. Then hop on them and break the two bricks above. If you haven’t already activated the vine, try to do so now, and then make the following invisible blocks appear if you need them to reach the vine. Climb the vine and you’ll reach the Warp Zone that can take you to worlds 6, 7 or 8 depending on which pipe you enter.

Where to find warp zone #3 hidden in level 4-2

To reach the final Warp Zone (note that you can only take one Warp Zone since both are on the same level), you will need to reach the ceiling from an elevator platform and then run all the way across it to the right, just like you did in level 1-2. This Warp Zone will take you to World 5.

On the original Legend of Zelda (on virtual console) for Wii, how can you save a game in progress?

Question

In the original Legend of Zelda for the NES, there was a trick where you could (if I remember correctly) press and select simultaneously on the 2nd controller to bring up the Save dialog.

After buying the Virtual Console version for the Wii, I tried this trick and it didn't work.

Is there a way to save your game in-progress on the Wii version? (maybe I'm missing something obvious, like generic save state functionality)

Answer

Commonly with virtual console games, you can hit the center button (Wii menu?), and exit the game. This will automatically save the state of the game. Next time the game loads you'll begin at that spot; however, after reloading once the save state is no longer available -- resetting the system won't allow you to resume from that state again.

How much are 3DS Virtual Console Games?

Question

Not sure who all has heard the latest news the past couple days but the Big 'N' is slashing the price of the 3DS by $80 (here in the US) and will be offering their early adopters 20 free Virtual Console games (10 NES and 10 GBA).

I'm trying to figure out the value of the NES and GBA games but I can not find anything that states how much Virtual Console games cost on the 3DS. I know NES games are 500 Wii Points ($5) on the Wii, so I'd assume that's the same.

How much do these games costs/will they cost once they are released?

Answer

It seems that NES and GBA game prices have not been released yet, but this article from Wired says:

"Nintendo has set a rock-bottom price point of $1.99 for eShop games. Of the three Game Boy games available, Super Mario Land will cost $3.99, and Alleyway and Radar Mission will cost $2.99. Some applications will be free, though."

Likely to be a few dollars higher, considering the Wii's Virtual Console pricing structure of having more advanced systems' games be more expensive.
