Convert PS1 on PC saves to PS3/PSP save format

Question

I've been hunting for some PS1 game saves as my PS1 memory cards died. GameFAQs has many more saves listed for the Original PS1 save format rather than the PSV format. The PS3/PSP require PSV format to work, and I don't even know what to do with the gme files GameFAQs lists for PS1.

I know I can use the Sony Memory Card adapter for physical memory cards (and I own one) but that doesn't help me here unless I can somehow copy .gme files with the adapter from my PC, then to the PS3. If I can do that, that solves the problem as well, but I don't know how/if I can do that.

How can I convert these PS1 saves (.gme) to PS3/PSP format (.psv)?

Asked by Ben Brocka

Answer

This guide explains how to convert .MCR PSX memcard images to PS3 format.

PSXGE can handle conversion between most popular PSX memcard image formats, including .GME to .MCR (the format you're looking for in PSXGE is .MC, just rename it to .MCR).

Does the PS3 back up option back up PS1/PS2 game saves?

Question

When my first PS3 died I restored a back up and for some reason I lost all the internal memory card data for PS1/2 games. However, I restored the data on a different PS3 (with the same log in).

Are PS1/2 game saves not backed up at all, or are they only backed up for your specific PS3 or something? The warning when backing up says some items will only be restored on your own PS3 (or something like that).

Asked by Ben Brocka

Answer

The warning refers to copy-protected data, which does include PSX and PS2 save data. The full list of restricted data, courtesy of Sony's knowledgebase article on the utility:

The following copy-protected content will not be transferable:

  • Digital Right Management (DRM)
  • PlayStation® format software game data
  • PlayStation®2 format software game data
  • PlayStation®3 format software Game Save Data flagged as unexportable
  • Trophy data, trophy data is saved onto your Sony Entertainment Network account

Note these restrictions don't seem to apply if you're just replacing the hard drive (something I do often and haven't had problems with PSX saves or unexportable PS3 games): it only seems to apply when replacing the entire console.

Another knowledgebase article enumerates what types of data can be exported:

Some types of backed up data can be restored on another PS3™ system. The types of data that can be restored on another system are as follows:

  • Saved data from PlayStation®3 format software*1
  • Saved data for minigames ("minis")
  • Saved data for PSP™ Game software
  • Image files under (Photo)
  • Music files under (Music)*2
  • Video files under (Video)*2
  • Bookmarks added under (Internet Browser)
  • Terms that were added using (Settings) > (System Settings) > [Add/Edit Term], or predictive terms that were "learned" by the on-screen keyboard

*1 Copy-protected data cannot be restored. Also, saved data that has been restored may not be usable in some games.
*2 Does not include copyright-protected data.

Is there a way to cleanup or repair savegames?

Question

We are having issues with crashes in Fallout: New Vegas on the PS3. We tried our savegames on another PS3 and encountered the same problems. Also, starting a new game on our PlayStation or loading the savegame of a friend does not have any crashes.

The savegame of my girlfriend does crash very often, at most in open areas. With my own savegame crashes are not that frequent but they happen.

Since we are very advanced it would be very sad if we had to restart from scratch, also we are frightened that this issue could occur again with any other savegame.

We also tried to delete Fallout and reinstall it along with all updates and DLCs, this did not help.

So my question is:
Is there any way to repair or fix up the savegames of the PS3 Version using a Linux or Windows PC? (Linux would be preferred, but Windows is also available.)

Asked by NobbZ

Answer

Fallout: New Vegas is notoriously buggy. As the game wears on, the chances of you encountering one or more crashing bugs becomes increasingly likely. The Fallout Wikia has a long list of things that you can try, but here's just a few of the most relevant ones:

  • Turning the pip-boy radio off and leaving it off seems to help quite a bit. Try it if nothing else seems to help.
  • Crashes often when you near completion of the game. Waiting 73 hours can fix this occasionally by resetting all cells except the one you are in.
  • Crashes or very severe slowdowns are common when the player character reaches the top of a hill or ridge and the landscape and sky beyond become visible. (no known workaround)
  • Equipping the sniper rifle may cause the game to slow down severely and most likely freeze. On the PS3 equipping the sniper rifle can cause the weapon hotkeys to stop functioning, and the game to crash shortly thereafter on attempts to sleep, save, enter a new area, or just walk around the map for a minute or so.
  • Sometimes changing the color of the interface can cause the game to crash or lock up. Keeping the interface Amber may help in avoiding this. (On both the Pip-Boy and Hud)

As far as I know, there's no save file editors for Windows or Linux that can fix the cause of crashes in New Vegas. In fact, editing your save outside the game is probably more likely to cause you crashes in the future.

How do I unlock each of the “alternate” videos in MGS3?

Question

How do I unlock each of the alternate videos for Metal Gear Solid 3's "DEMO THEATER"? There seems to be a real lack of information online about it! :(

Thanks for any SPECIFIC explanations that go through each alternate video and how you unlock them.

Thanks!

Answer

Well, as it turns out, you have to play through the game at least four times. The alternate scenes are:

When you're fighting The End, and your final duel with Ocelot.

THE END:

  1. Beat him normally.
  2. Beat him by saving, quitting out, and then setting your clock several weeks forward.

There's also:

  1. Letting your stamina drain down.
  2. Saving, quitting out, and setting your system clock forward a day.

OCELOT:

  1. Pick the left gun, shoot Ocelot.
  2. Pick the left gun, miss Ocelot.
  3. Pick the left gun, don't fire.
  4. Pick the right gun.

When you've unlocked all the of the videos in DEMO THEATER, you get access to the PEEP SHOW. Which is all the scenes in the game with semi-nudity.

Can I combine PS3 controllers and PSVita remote play?

Question

I recently bought the Remote-Play enabled Pixeljunk Eden, and since I have one PS3 controller and one Vita, I was wondering how exactly remote play works (I'm interested in trying Eden's co-op).

Does everyone need to use Remote-Play, or must everyone? Is there a limit to the number of Remote-Play-ers, or are they just as good as having actual controllers? Does any of this vary by game?

Asked by Raven Dreamer

Answer

This is not how remote play works, it simply allows you to control the PS3 from the Vita from any location you have internet access.

Basically it displays what would have been on the TV screen on the Vita Screen but not every game supports this feature. You can however switch the PS3 on from standby and access the XMB.

Two player is not possible via remote play unless it is online.

How do I defeat an enemy with a parry?

Question

I'm stuck on one last trophy for Marvel Super Hero Squad: The Infinity Gauntlet:

Take that, Villain!
Defeated an enemy with a parry.

I've looked up a couple guides and they seem to say the same thing:

This trophy will pop up during natural gaming. Block an enemy’s attack with [circle] and then hit [square] immediately after to execute a parry.

Well, it certainly didn't come with natural gameplay and I haven't had any problems getting the rest of the trophies. But this one still eludes me. No matter what I try, I can't seem to get this to work. I hold [circle] to block and then immediately hit [square], the guy dies, and nothing happens.

Can anyone shed some light or be more specific on what needs to happen? Obviously I'm doing something wrong and can't figure out what it is. I figure since it says "Defeated" they have to die from the hit, so I tried weakening the enemy first, then blocking and attacking so they die instantly.

Are there any specific enemies that are easier to do this with, on specific levels? I've been trying this for hours along with finishing heroic feats and now I've pretty much finished everything else and am still left with this.

Asked by animuson

Answer

Parrying requires you to block just as the attack hits, not before it.

Rather than holding O, try pressing O just as the enemy's attack is about to hit, then when the attack is blocked, attack with Square

Belethor disappeared

Question

So for some reason Belethor seems to have disappeared. Whenever I go to his shop, it is locked up tight. However, when I see his assistant, he always invites me to come by the shop, so I don't think I killed him. I know there was a dragon attack in the city, but I only saw guards dead. Either way, I thought that store owners were among the NPCs that could not get killed. Is there some reason I am missing as to where he could have gone? This is also before the Civil War storyline (I haven't joined a faction yet).

Asked by IrishJMA

Answer

Belethor is not essential (read: he can be killed), so it's possible that he's dead. I can't confirm this at the moment, but I believe that Sigurd (his assistant) will say the same things regardless of Belethor's state - he's only got about 3 lines total.

The UESP page for Belethor notes a bug that you may be experiencing, though:

Belethor's shop will often close the moment you leave no matter what the hour, and may not reopen until after his inventory resets. [...] The standard wait for reset often results in his shop still being closed regardless of the time of day. Waiting nearby in one hour increments may fix this.

PS3 restore backup restores no data

Question

My PS3's blu-ray drive died recently, so I performed a backup with the Backup Utility and sent my console in for repair.

About a week later I received a replacement PS3 from Sony and have attempted to restore using my backup. But, the backup utility has restored NO DATA!

I have tried logging in to PSN and attempting the restore again, but the end result is the same.

I'm aware that some data cannot be restored, especially since Sony has replaced my original PS3 with a refurbished one, but surely I should see something restored! What am I doing wrong?

Asked by YellowMegaMan

Answer

Rather than try to work out what happened or how to fix the restore process, I just started fresh with my new PS3.

I can't stress how useful the PSN+ cloud service is, since without it you can pretty much redownload everything except your own saved games.

The PSN+ cloud service does not back up saved games from PS1, PS2 or minis though, so be sure and copy those from your old system to a USB device while you still can.

How to play a multiplayer team death match in MW3 indefinitely? (no scoring)

Question

I do not know if this is possible but I think the online team death match is too fast? The game ends every 10-20 mins when the score is reached. Is there a way or a mode that let's you play indefinitely without scoring or at least to join a game with extremely high score goals? Currently I have no choice and I am automatically joined in a random game. This is PS3 btw.

Asked by IMB

Answer

In private matches, you can customize the rules of the game and change things such as the time limit and score limit. However, you must then invite friends to play with you. Private matches are just that - private, and only open to the people you invite.

If you're looking to play a game against random people on the internet, you are limited to the playlists that are available within the game. None of the available multiplayer game modes are time-based in Modern Warfare 3.

That said, Team Deathmatch games tend to play pretty quickly, but if you just want to be playing and getting kills, you might try an "objective" game type.

For instance:

  • Search and Destroy tends to take longer and does not have a kill limit. The objective is to get a bomb to a bomb site, which many people ignore in favor of just killing each other.
  • Kill Confirmed requires that you pick up tags in order to get credit for a kill, so there are typically more kills per round than in other "kill enemies to win" modes.
  • Drop Zone also focuses more on holding a position and playing with killstreak rewards than on a specific number of kills.
  • Ground War mixes several game types and has a higher score limit, so more kills are required to win, although there are typically more players.

Can I import someone else's Mass Effect 2 save on a PS3?

Question

This question about where to find a full Mass Effect 2 save file made me wonder, on the PS3 can I import ME2 save data from another person when I play Mass Effect 3?

I know PS3 save files are tied to the user ID to a certain amount so I'm wondering if I can import these save files at all and if it would be possible to download a copy to import as I haven't played ME2.

Asked by Ben Brocka

Answer

This is technically possible, but for some titles it requires software designed to circumvent basic built-in security measures in the PS3. Not that there's a PS3 police knocking on your door, but if you want to be really technical, using another player's save on the PS3 network is considered a violation of their TOS.

Migrating data to a new PS3

Question

I have a PS3 Fat which I bought many years ago, and have since upgraded the hard disc to a new 250gb one.

If I were to trade it in for a slim version, how would I go about moving all my save games, data and everything from one console to the other?

As I know it, there are two options.

  1. Buy a subscription to PSN+ and sync all my saves and stuff into
the cloud, and redownload it on the new one.
  2. Go with how I upgraded my disc, create a backup onto an external and then restore it all.

However with option 2 I lost most of my DLC and had to reinstall most of my games, and then go through and download and apply all the DLC again. So is there a foolproof way of migrating all my gear from one console onto a new one?

Asked by DavidYell

Answer

I wouldn't call it foolproof because it's lengthy, but there is a relatively straightforward way of transferring your data. It's called the data transfer utility and requires an ethernet cable. The manual states the following:

Preparing the systems to transfer data

Before starting the data transfer operation, you must perform the following steps.

  1. Update the system software of both PS3™ systems to the latest version.
  2. Prepare the PS3™ system that will send the data (the “source system”). If multiple users exist on the source PS3™ system, you must perform the following operations for all of the users before starting the data transfer operation.
    • Create a PlayStation®Network account if a user does not have an account. - Select (PlayStation®Network) > (Sign Up), and then follow the on-screen instructions to create an account.
    • Deactivate the PS3™ system if the data to be transferred contains content that was purchased from PlayStation®Store. - Select (PlayStation®Network) > (Account Management) > (System Activation).
    • Back up, or "sync", trophy information on the PS3™ system with the PlayStation®Network server if you want to transfer trophy information. - Sign in to PlayStation®Network, and then select (Game) > (Trophy Collection).
    • Sign in to (PlayStation®Home) before transferring the data if you have obtained reward items for use in (PlayStation®Home) on the source system.
    • Back up your profile information and stages you created in LittleBigPlanet™ to your saved game. You can then use the data that was backed up when playing LittleBigPlanet™ on the destination PS3™ system.

Notice

The following restrictions apply if you perform the data transfer operation without creating a PlayStation®Network account:

  • You may not be able to use the saved data on the destination PS3™ system.
  • You may no longer be able to earn trophies using the saved data that you transferred.
  • Trophy information is not transferred.

Transferring data

Turn off both PS3™ systems, and then perform the following steps. If the transferred data is saved game data that is copy-prohibited or data that is copyright-protected, it will be moved to the destination PS3™ system and deleted from the source PS3™ system.

  1. Using an Ethernet cable, make a direct connection between the two PS3™ systems. You can use either an Ethernet straight-through cable or an Ethernet crossover cable.
  2. Connect the PS3™ systems to different video input connectors on the TV. For example, use the HDMI input connector and the video input connector on the TV.
  3. Turn on the TV, and then turn on the PS3™ systems. Use the TV remote control to switch the video input to display the screen of the source PS3™ system.
  4. On the source PS3™ system, select (Settings) > (System Settings) > [Data Transfer Utility].
  5. Select [1. Transfer data from this system to the other PS3™ system.]. If you did not complete the preparation steps described earlier, follow the on-screen instructions to complete these steps.
  6. When the PS3™ system is on standby to begin the data transfer, use the TV remote control to switch the video input to display the screen of the destination PS3™ system.
  7. On the destination PS3™ system, select (Settings) > (System Settings) > [Data Transfer Utility].
  8. Select [2. Transfer data from the other PS3™ system to this system.] Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the operation.

Hints

  • After the data transfer operation has been completed, you can turn off the source PS3™ system. Set the TV to display the screen of the source PS3™ system, and then select (Users) > (Turn Off System).

  • If content that was downloaded from PlayStation®Store was transferred as part of this operation, you must activate the destination PS3™ system before you can use the data. Log in to the PS3™ system as the user who owns the content, and then select (PlayStation®Network) > (Account Management) > (System Activation) to activate the system.

Limitations of the data transfer utility

Some types of data cannot be transferred using the data transfer utility, and some types of data can be transferred but not played on the destination PS3™ system. For the latest information, visit the SCE website for your region. The following types of data are not transferrable:

  • Video content that has been downloaded as a rental from PlayStation®Store (file type: MNV)
  • Tracks (including "songpacks") for the SingStar™ software that have been saved on the PS3™ system's hard disk
  • Copyright-protected video files (file types: MGV and ETS)
  • Video files that are compatible with the DivX® VOD (Video On Demand) service
  • The following PlayStation®2 format software titles, if they are installed on the PS3™ system's hard disk:
    • [Nobunaga's Ambition Online] and [Expansion Packs]
    • [FINAL FANTASY XI] and [Expansion Discs]
    • [SOCOM II: U.S. NAVY SEALs] and [Related discs included with OPM* Issue 87, OPM* Issue 88, OPM* Issue 89, OPM* Issue 90]
    • SOCOM 3: U.S. NAVY SEALs
    • SOCOM: U.S. NAVY SEALs Combined Assault

For the following data types, you must perform some additional steps after completing the data transfer to be able to use the data:

  • Application data for Life with PlayStation®
    • Download and install the Life with PlayStation® application on the destination PS3™ system. You can continue to accumulate contribution points for the PlayStation®Network ranking system of the Folding@home™ channel.
  • GripShift™
    • When you start the game for the first time after the data transfer operation, an error message will be displayed and you will not be able to play the game. To play the game, download and install the game again.
  • Saved data for Ghostbusters™ and Ghostbusters™: The Video Game

    • The saved game will not be recognized when you start the game for the first time after the data transfer operation. To use the saved data, quit the game, and then start the game again.
  • Official PlayStation Magazine

Hint

Some software titles may not be sold in some regions.

Just so you know, the destination console may shut itself down after the transfer is complete.

If you also intend to swap hard drives

This is slightly harder. As you probably know by this point, PS3s format their drives on install so it's not like you can just plug your old drive in an go. There is this handy guide on how to do this. In it it mentions this useful backup tool as well as the data transfer tool.

The guide states as follows:

...to avoid redownloading gigabytes upon gigabytes worth of digital gaming and destroying my monthly bandwidth alottment, I did the following:

  1. Backed up my protected saves just in case things didn’t go according to plan.
  2. Purged unnecessary game data (ie: installs, patches, demos etc)
  3. Performed a backup to an external hard drive using the Backup Utility
  4. Once the backup was complete, removed the hard drives (320GB & 160GB in my case) from both consoles and swapped them.
  5. Booted up each console and performed the requested formatting of each drive.
  6. Restored the backup from step 3 onto the old PlayStation 3.
  7. Once the restore was complete, initiated a transfer via the Data Transfer Utility

The Data Transfer Utility worked as described; all my PSN games, themes and saves (protected and otherwise) made it across the Ethernet cable into the new PS3.

Note: The destination console may shut itself down after the transfer is complete.

PS3 Loading without sound

Question

Okay, so I have the old fat PS3 80gb, which I upgraded with a 250gb hdd ages ago. For the last while, not sure, some stuff has been loading without sound.

  1. I get a loading chime and XMB tones
  2. I can play music from the XMB without problem, nice sound
  3. I can watch TV through the 4OD, iPlayers and the like no issues
  4. Game trailers work fine, but, they only work if I press triangle and select the 'Play from beginning'. If I then exit the playback using circle and then play it again, I get no sound
  5. I rented a movie from PSN yesterday and it took me 8 tries of playing and quitting to get the sound to work
  6. I can't get Little Big Planet to work with sound at all this morning

If anyone has any ideas please do chip in, this is starting to really frustrate me. Infamous seems to load with sound every time, Kill Team is a 3/10 chance of getting sound. So it seems to be some games more than others.

I've reset my Sound Settings again, but short of a system factory reset, I'm really not sure what to do at this point.

Taking a note from the 'Play from beginning' I tried pressing triangle and then 'Start' from the games menu and this doesn't seem to work either.

Created a thread on the tech help sony forums also, http://community.eu.playstation.com/t5/Technical-Help/Games-movies-and-videos-loading-without-sound/td-p/13842737

Asked by DavidYell

Answer

Are you connected through HDMI for audio? Have you tried hooking it up with another type of connection such as a analog sound cable? Some TVs have shoddy HDMI Audio implementations and switching video modes can cause their audio to "desync" from the stream. You could also try changing which types of streams are sent to the TV could help as well, reducing it to only PCM perhaps instead of Dolby may help it when it transitions from program to program.

You can try shutting the TV off and turning it back on when it happens as well, and that may nudge the HDMI connection into working.

Is it possible to find out what level your follower is on?

Question

Also, is it possible to level them up? Or do they level up just like me by fighting and increasing their skills?

Asked by David

Answer

They are locked at the level on which you hired them, and will not continue to level up as you do.

To set them on your current level(should be higher) you can:

  • use console commands on the PC ("disable" then "enable" the character while they are not in your party.

  • use Wabbajack to turn them into a mudcrab/goat/etc, then rehire them when they change back.

This resets their stats to the current player level, and also does not appear to reset their inventory or quest scripting (although you will need to take an item from their inventory and put it back to get them to re-equip any non-default equipment you've given them). However, it has no effect if they are currently in your party. Essential characters can not be transformed, therefore essential followers can not reset their stats unless using console commands.

There are a couple very specific occasions in which certain Followers will level up due to scripted events in quests.

Note that most of followers can reach max lvl 30 so updating them past this level would be useless.

For those on PC check out getlevel and setlevel console commands.

Do I need to own Orgins to play Awakening

Question

I really like DAO, but I am just burrowing it from a friend. I have found DAW for pretty cheap and I want to play it, but am I limited to playing it only while I still have DAO.

I know it is an expansion, and from my pc days I was able to play the original using the expansion CD. I don't expect that here, but what are the limitation of an expansion on PS3.

Asked by kwelch

Answer

  • Do I need to insert my Origins disk to play Awakening?

If you are only playing Awakening, you do not need to swap discs on any platform. Simply start Dragon Age with your Awakening disc and away you go!

Many more common questions regarding the expansion pack are answered in the source below.

Source here

More information per the source:

On PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 console, start up Dragon Age with the Awakening disc in the drive, then press New Game. Select Awakening campaign icon.

  • How do I import my DA:O character?

To import your Dragon Age: Origins character into Awakening:

For PC:

Select OTHER CAMPAIGNS at the start menu.

Select Dragon Age: Awakening from the list of campaigns.

Select IMPORT FROM ANOTHER MODULE at the next screen.

You will be presented the character from your last played save game. Select IMPORT, or choose ADVANCED to select another save game you wish to use

For Console: To import your Dragon Age: Origins character into Awakening:

Start Dragon Age with the Awakening disc in the drive.

Select NEW GAME at the start menu.

Select the Awakening icon.

At the character creation screen, select IMPORT CHARACTER

Choose save game to import

In all platforms, if the character had not yet reached level 18, they will be elevated to that level instantly.

  • What level do new Grey Wardens start at?

If you create a new Grey Warden for your adventure in Awakening they will start at level 18.

All specialization, attribute, talent and skill points will be unassigned, allowing you to customize your character from the very start.

  • Will my items transfer to Awakening when I import my character?

Most items will import into Awakening from Origins. All items obtained from the Return to Ostagar DLC will transfer. Weapons, armor and other items that are unique to all other DLC releases will not transfer.

Your storage chest at Warden's Keep will not be accessible and items stored in it will not transfer to Awakening. Be sure to go back and retrieve anything you think you might want before importing your character to Awakening. You will have a new storage chest at Vigil Keep once you are in Awakening.

  • Do I have to complete the base game to import my character?

No. You do not have to complete the base game to import your character. However completing Dragon Age: Origins may open different options for your character in Awakening.

When I try to install my Awakening expansion the auto-installer freezes and returns an "Installation Failed" message.

There is a potential workaround, which can be found in the Dragon Age Customer Support Site: http://help.dragonage.com/cgi-bin/eadragonage.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?&p_faqid=46545

Do I have to steal “Litany of Larceny” items during the quest?

Question

So I was looking through the wiki and saw that I missed an item for the "Litany of Larceny" quest when I did Snow Veil Sanctum. I went back and got the model ship, but when I went to Devin I did not get the conversation prompt to sell him the item. It is the last item I need to complete the quest, and it does not show under my completed quest section. Did I miss out on the quest because I didn't get the ship during my first trip through the dungeon? Is this a known bug? Or am I just missing something? Also, I am playing on ps3, so console commands are not an option to complete the quest.

Asked by IrishJMA

Answer

The final item, and sometimes the Left Eye of the Falmer (final or not) can/will cause the larceny quests to bug. It is possible that the death of Mercer Frey is the cause of the glitch and there are workarounds for the PC and 360 .

It appears that finishing the Thieves Guild quest Darkness Returns will sometimes prevent handing in more larceny items to Delvin. Source

I don't think there is a fix for it on the ps3.

Metal Gear Solid 3 HD: “King of the Jungle” Achievement

Question

Does anyone know if you have to eat every type of animal on ONE playthrough, or does it accumulate like Kerotans when you load from a previous playthrough?

I think I captured just about everything my first time around, apart from one or two things, I'd rather not have to do it all again for my second playthrough.

Thanks for any help!

Answer

According to this trophy guide:

[...] To earn the title MARKHOR you must collect all 48 different types of animal and plant life. That is all Snakes, Birds, Fruit, Mushrooms, Fish, Frogs and various other non-specific flora/fauna. You do not need to eat, just hold all 48 items in your inventory at least once in a single playthrough [...]

So, to answer your question, you do have to collect all animals/plants on a single playthorugh, but you don't have to eat them all.

Effective placement of claymores in BF3

Question

Recently i've been trying to use claymores but I never seem to be able to position them in a way that makes them effective. I'm aware that you can avoid them by crouching or going prone but in the situations where i've used them, the other team seems to just freely walk into them without triggering them. There was one instance where one was planted several feet from the sliding door inside the Metro near the Cafe entrance and someone actually scaled over it like it was a fence?

If I want to protect a doorway, how many approx feet in distance should the claymore be placed to effectively cover any attempt to enter the doorway?

Answer

This actually can be kind of tricky with the location to where you place your claymores. I have not 'climbed them like a fence' before because they usually blow up in my face.

Although, I have entered a doorway (running through) where the claymore has gone off and not harmed me at all. [it should have killed me]

My recommendations:

For claymore locations on Metro: would be at the very top of both front and back escalators on objective B. These are usually squeezed points where players [on average] sprint up carelessly to attempt to either flank or bypass that objective.

For claymore locations near a doorway: I would place them facing the doorway, sitting in a location your enemy would not be facing when they enter that room ( when the claymore gets triggered, it blows up into their back). This method will strive to prevent the enemy from noticing the claymore (so they dont bypass it or disarm it safely).

If that method isn't applicable, your best option is try to conceal the claymore by hugging a wall facing outward towards the door and having it placed about a foot back from the door.

Keep in mind results may vary. Different players techniques vary and these are just a few recommendations.

Is it possible to get data off of a dead PS3

Question

Is possible to get the data off of the hard drive of a PlayStation that has crashed. I have already voided the warranty so I am not worried about that and I have access to quite a few tools.

I have a new playstation and a few saves that were not backed u. I am not worried about them but if it is possible I would love to get it moved over.

The old playstation will not turn on at all and I think I am going to have to pull the drive. My main concern is if I am able to transfer the files without running into any issues. I have heard that some of the stuff is specific to each playstation is that true?

Thanks

Answer

There's no way to get data off a PS3's hard disk if the PS3 is dead.

Transplanting the hard disk into a new PS3 doesn't work because the hard disk data is tied to the old PS3. The new PS3 will only allow you to format the drive, not access the data.

How does clan ranking work in Call of Duty Elite, and how can I increase it?

Question

In Call Of Duty Elite (Modern Warfare 3, PS3) I cannot figure out how to increase my clan ranking. I effectively added 9 friends to my clan, but the ranking is still at 1.

How does clan ranking work, and how can I increase it?

Answer

Currently there are very few ways of increasing your clan rank. Clan rank goes up by accumulating clan XP.

You can get clan XP by adding people to your clan who have "Founder Status" - this means people who joined the for-pay version of Elite right around the Modern Warfare 3 launch. Since most of these people are in clans already, and it's a one-time bonus, this is not really a good source of clan XP.

The "real" way of getting clan XP is participating in Clan Operations:

Clan operations award clans that finish in the bronze tier or higher. Bronze requirements may change from op to op, but generally if your clan finishes in the upper half of an operation, it will be rewarded.

These rewards include badges that are displayed in your clan’s showcase and Clan XP.

Only the clan leader can enroll in Clan Ops, and in order to get badges or XP, you're going to have to have your clan members play the designated game type during the operations period. There's more detail on the "Compete" tab of Elite, under the heading "What are Clan Operations," which is just above the photos of upcoming Clan Ops.

The MW3 events team has had a spotty track record with scheduling and awarding Clan Ops to date, so if clan ranking/XP is important to you, you'll want to check in early and often for new ops.
