How do I get to the surgery machine on level R of System Shock 1?

Question

On level R (the lowest floor) of System Shock 1, there's a surgery machine clearly visible near the anti-radiation chamber. It's blocked only by a force door, as seen on the screenshot below.

SS1, level R, surgery machine

I have no idea how to unlock that room and my guides couldn't help me out either this time. I'm pretty sure I completed everything else on this level, so it can't be a room that is relevant for proceeding with the story in any way.

Any ideas how to get in there?

Answer

There should be a wire puzzle panel on the wall directly opposite the door which will open it (from where you're standing in that screenshot, you'd need to turn right about 90 degrees to see it).

How do I get into the area blocked by force bridges on level 7 of System Shock 1?

Question

In System Shock 1, on level 7, there's an area in the middle that is blocked by force bridges. See the screenshot below and in particular note the map MFD in the lower right:

SS1, L7, force bridge blocking path

What you see here is the SE force bridge blocking my path. There's a symmetrical force bridge on the SW of the room.

In the NW of the area, there's a door (visible on the map), but it's "broken beyond repair", which afaik means that there's no in-game way to open it. I don't see a way to get there from the NE at all.

I checked some walkthroughs but none is comprehensive enough to cover this in the required detail. I presume it's also a very irrelevant area. I completed everything I need to get done on this level. (I still haven't found the surgery machine, but I might have just accidentally destroyed it.)

Can someone help me out and provide me with a pointer? It's really probably just a switch somewhere that I missed.

Answer

I couldn't let this go and eventually figured it out, with a little bit of help from the System Shock I.C.E. Breaker guide book.

There's the main center area, the S of which is shown on the screenshot, right N of the area I wanted to get into. In this center area, I completely missed that there's a third level of platforms. You can get there either with your jump jets (I guess) or just by coming through that complex system of spiral staircase tunnels from the N.

When you're up there, there are a number of puzzles to solve, one of which opens the 'broken beyond repair' door to the SW (which is NW of the area I want to get into). From there you get to the surgery machine and also to an energy charge station (in addition to the usual set of loot and baddies).

Increase mouse pointer speed in System Shock Portable

Question

I'm running System Shock Portable v1.2 and when I increase the resolution to 1024x768 or higher the mouse pointer speed slows down incredibly making the game nearly unplayable (I have to move my mouse 3-4 times to get the pointer across the screen).

Is there some config file setting to increase the speed of the mouse pointer? I am using Malba Tahan's mouselook mod as well as Gulikoza's DOSBox build if that makes a difference.

Edit: In XCYB.CFG I decreased the hmousemul and vmousemul to 1 which makes it playable but is there any other tweak that can be done to increase the speed of the cursor even a little more?

Answer

In DOSBox, the mouse sensitivity can be altered by changing the setting "sensitivity" in section [sdl] in the file "Dosbox.conf".

The default value is 100 and can be changed up to 1000.

I don't know if this is helpful for you in this situation but it might be worth a try.
