Is it possible to play Halo 1 over System Link/LAN between an Xbox and an Xbox 360?

Question

Is it possible to play Halo: Combat Evolved with System Link/LAN between an Xbox and an Xbox 360?

Asked by michelemarcon

Answer

Yes. You can play any backwards compatible games (which includes Halo 1) via System Link between an original Xbox and an Xbox 360. You can't just connect the two Ethernet ports together, however as the original Xbox requires a crossover cable. You can however, plug them both into the same router. You will need a disc per console, as with any System link play.

Halo Reach Credits custom games

Question

I was at a LAN party at one of my friends house last night where we played 50+ custom game matches. Mainly Infection. After every matches was over, me and only one of my other buddies got only 50 or less credits. While the other 7 people in the group got 100 - 1000 credits every match. I was top player on several occasions and still only got 50 or less credits. I even had more medals in a few matches compared to my friends that were getting more points. I figure there may be a glitch because me and the one other buddy were on a separate hub than the rest of the group, but we still played the matches just fine.

Why was I not receiving 100-1000 credits like everyone else?

Answer

This is only a theory, but were the ones that were getting reduced credits xbox live profiles?

If a profile is an online one (AKA a gold subscription I believe) then they work on a different credit scale than that of an offline account. This is done so that offline accounts can experience all the joys of the armory easier, and online accounts can't abuse offline play to max out credits easy.

This is what I'm basing this theory on:

On a similar note, I’ve been seeing some chatter about the prospect of mass quantity credit dumps that can be earned through offline play in various game modes. Some of the laziest among us are no doubt already plotting out their path of least resistance, thinking of ingenious new ways to rubber band a controller to achieve a Zen like state of ridiculous effortlessness.

Not so fast. When you escort your offline profile into the wonderful world of Xbox LIVE, our servers will identify your newly connected status and instantly notify you that our online credit scale operates on a completely different level. (That fizzle sound you’re hearing is probably your boosters running out of fuel in an oxygen starved environment. Don’t look down, RocketMan.)

If you choose to remain offline with your decked out profile, you get to keep your ducats and your duds with no questions asked. But should you opt to take this party online, your credits will be reduced significantly and any Armory items that you had previously earned (for which you no longer meet the minimum online credit or rank requirements) will be righteously revoked.

Of course, the credit reduction that occurs when you make the move into cyberspace is completely by design. For players without a connection to the outside world, the system is simply accelerating the credits being awarded to allow them to experience the Armory at a realistically achievable (but decidedly lonely) offline pace. For those who opt for a more social experience, the grind is a little more protracted, but still profoundly fun.

System Link fails

Question

I recently bought a brand new xbox 360 slim and have transferred all of my data to it. It also has an xbox live account that gets played quite frenquently. My old xbox is still operable and in fact gets used by my brothers. We both have copies of Call of Duty World at War and would like to system link to play zombies with 4 people. However when we system link via direct ethernet connection or via router connection, the the joining xbox never sees the games being hosted by the host xbox.

I have tried changing which xbox is the host. I have swapped out ethernet cables to see if any are bad. I have tried several different routers to see if that changes the connection.

The weird part is whenever we system link with Halo Reach we have no problems connecting and playing together. The only thing I can think of is that the newer xbox has been updated via xbox live and is not compatible with the version of WAW or the old xbox.

Does anyone know why this is happening or how to fix it?

Answer

Chances are good this has to do with the version of CoD: WAW you're both running - since you can link up to play Halo: Reach, it's not an issue with hardware or networking. This is especially likely if you connect regularly to XBox Live on the newer XBox 360, but the older XBox 360 has not connected in a while.

Your options at this point are to clear all the software updates off both Xboxes (not recommended - you have to clear everything), or to get the older XBox to update to the newest version.

The second option is likely less inconvenient. If you go with it, you can either connect that older XBox to XBox Live using a different Gamertag (either Gold or Silver should work), or go through the following steps (using a single Gamertag):

  1. Plug the older XBox into a network
  2. Recover your Gamertag (make sure you've connected to XBox Live with that Gamertag recently, as you'll lose all offline achievements that haven't been submitted yet).
  3. Start up Call of Duty: World at War
  4. Update to the newest version when prompted
  5. At this point, the two XBoxes should be able to link up
  6. Recover your Gamertag on your newer XBox, so that you can continue to use it as normal

Given the time investment it's probably easier to use a Silver Gamertag - it's free, and signing up from scratch (assuming you don't have one already) is probably less time-consuming that two Gamertag Recoveries.

Diablo 2 LAN game

Question

When I host the game my friend can't connect to me.

Our Ip 192.168.1.100, 192.168.1.101.

But when I run second instance of Game.exe I can connect myself

Both computers has Windows 7.

I try to find some information in Google to configure Windows. There was advice to remove Ipv6 protocol, but it doesn't help

Answer

Since the two computers are on the same local network, as you confirmed, it might be an issue of either network configuration in general or firewall configuration on at least one of the machines.

There is a support article on Battle Net about neccessary tcp and udp ports for Diablo2. I suggest to look it through, but the core info is:

Diablo II/Lord of Destruction: TCP Port 6112 and Port 4000.

Startopia multiplayer crashes to desktop

Question

Starting a two player game (TCP/IP or IPX, doesn't matter) works great, but after ~10 minutes of playing the client (and always the client even when switching roles) crashes to desktop without any logfile left. A second, possibly related problem is that on the server one cannot get back to the game from the menu after hitting escape, so loading a previous game doesn't work either :-(

Any ideas what is causing this?

Tested configurations:

  • Server: win7pro, 64bit (=:PC1), client: win xp pro 32 bit (=:PC2)
  • Server: PC2, client: PC1
  • both client and server xp pro 32bit

The game runs fine on each configuration for single player (ok, CTDs occur too but after several hours only).

Answer

I've never tried online play myself.

The brilliant guide RTSC Startopia has a few notes on its starting page. In particular, they say:

  • That online play, different from LAN play, doesn't work well. (Yeah, you figured that out yourself.) Meaning it's probably caused by desyncs due to the higher latency, something many older games struggle with.
  • That the autosave helped them after the frequent crashes.
  • That there's a rumour that the autosave itself causes the crashes and that disabled the autosaving by write-protecting the file might help. (Could this explain why it's almost after ten minutes for you?)
  • Do not try to save. Do not pause. Do not open the menu. (More indicating that desyncing is the issue at hand.)
  • That you shouldn't get frustrated by crashing multiplayer games, because it will just happen a lot. (Probably the most helpful tip, but also much easier said than done. :))

Install / Sync Multiple Steam games over LAN

Question

I have a bunch of Macs that I'd like to install the same Steam games on (they all have separate accounts) I'd like to be able to install it on one and have Steam leach the files from that machine instead of the Internet. The games total 10GB which would be fast over LAN but slow over the net.

I know it uses some P2P tech, is it clever enough to detect nearby hosts? Or can I copy some steam install files manually?

Answer

I'd use one if the backup/restore methods discussed in other questions here (such as How do I move Steam games to a new computer without re-downloading them?). There's no reason a backup can't be restored to multiple computers, or the data copied directly from one to the others.

Can I play Dead Island over a LAN?

Question

Tomorrow I'm going to go to visit my friend, I will bring my laptop. He has Dead Island, and If there is any way we can play on LAN, I will also buy it.

Does it have LAN?

Answer

Yes you can, in fact you can specifically set it (in options) to allow only LAN, or both (I think it's both, it might just be internet), or neither. Just go into:

Options > Online > Gametype - Co-operative > Game Visibility - LAN

SZ_GetSpace overflow in Paintball 2

Question

When I try to start a match in Digital Paint: Paintball 2 I get a huge amount of error messages after I click 'Start Game'.
The error message is:

SZ_GetSpace: overflow
WARNING: msg overflowed for x3m157

(x3m157 is my username). Any idea what is causing this? The map I'm trying to load is pball_shred. Thanks!

EDIT: After I do this, if I press ESC to get back to the main menu and click 'Join Game', the game I tried to start shows up on the list, but when I try to join, I get the same error messages

EDIT #2: This doesn't change if I change the map that I am trying to have the match on.
The elim time does not affect anything either. I have started a bounty in the hope of getting an answer to this annoying problem. (if you get the Tumbleweed badge, you know something's wrong :)

Answer

OK, I posted my question on the DigitalPaint forum and I got an answer (from jitspoe himself :)
Here is a link to the post on DigitalPaint.

The problem was I was trying to load to many grenades. I changed the number of grens and it worked.

Is there any way to play Left 4 Dead on a LAN?

Question

It seems the only option for playing Left 4 Dead with my friends is to have all computers online, even though I bought the 4 pack from Valve. Is there anyway to plan a LAN game on Left 4 Dead 1?

Answer

It is possible. If you use srcds to set up a dedicated server and note the LAN IP of the computer hosting it, you can enable the developer console in-game (under Keyboard settings then advanced) press the ~ key (on foreign keyboards, it is usually whichever key is next to the 1 key) to open it and enter the command connect <LAN IP of server> into it. You'll then be dropped into the game. Make sure to edit the key of the server so that random people don't start joining. Consider setting it to LAN-only.

If you're using a non-QWERTY keyboard, sometimes binding the developer console may not work. If so, you can edit the launch options and add --console. Then, whenever you launch the game, you'll have console open.
