Is it worth doing Whimsyshire in Hell to get upgrades for Inferno

Question

So I'm wondering what is more efficient to farm gear for inferno. Once I acquired the ability to open the 'cow level' do the item drops and gold drops justify the effort to get the staff in the first place? Are there champions/rare mobs in Whimsyshire that increase my Nephalem Valor buff? Or am I better off just running Act I-IV hell and partially Act I inferno and hope for good items/gold.

Asked by Philipp

Answer

There are indeed rare and champion mobs in Whimsyshire with plenty of chests to loot. I have ran the level a few times on hell and the loot is what you would expect. The loot is equivalent to that of act 3 or 4. The pro to Inferno is that it has the ability to drop better, higher end gear. If you can farm Inferno (at least the skeleton king) at a regular rate I would suggest that you do that. If Inferno is giving you a hard time, Whimsyshire is as good as any other place in Hell to farm.

How can I farm orens?

Question

Is there any way to "farm" for orens in The Witcher 2?

Asked by Extrakun

Answer

There are several ways to gain orens continually

  • Farming monsters
  • Playing dice poker
  • Fistfighting
  • Arm wrestling

There are certain monsters than respawn, so you can farm them for alchemy and crafting ingredients and sell them. The respawning ends in many cases once you complete the quest for eliminating those monsters.

The three minigames are also a possible source of money, there are usually opponents you can challenge an unlimited amount of times, each time earning money.

How do I make a farm using buckets?

Question

On the Dwarf Fortress wiki is a description of muddying tiles using buckets and a channeled irrigation gallery. I haven't been able to make this work. I've dug the two z-levels, and channeled the upper level. I have a bucket, and I believe I've zoned the upper level as a pond (although I'm not at all sure I've done that correctly; the zoning menu is not intuitive to me). I have idle dwarfs, and they're not collecting water!

Is there anything else I need to do to enable my dwarfs to start pouring buckets? Do I need to designate a water source, enable a labour preference, or do anything else?

A step-by-step description of the process (particularly the zoning steps) would be extremely helpful to me.

Answer

Here's my method (illustration below, farm in progress): I dig an 8x8 room and channel out the interior 6x6 square with some stairs down for access. Once you've got that, you need to designate pond zones on the upper level. Only one dwarf will fill each pond zone at a time, so I like to designate six 2x3 pond zones.

Pond zones: i brings up the zone menu. Hit enter to start drawing a rectangle, then enter to set the other corner of the rectangle. Now you have a generic zone that's flashing. Press p (lower-case p) to make it a pond/pit. Press P (capital P) to change the zone settings. Press f to set the zone as a pond. Press esc to go back to the zone screen and draw your next zone!

Now you need free dwarves and plenty of buckets; they don't use buckets very efficiently. If your dwarves act too slowly, the water will start to evaporate, but I find 6 ponds with 6 dwarves will fairly quickly fill the farm area. If you have a stubborn spot that just won't fill, move your zones around to target that spot. If the stubborn spot is in the middle, well, be patient. :)

Once you've got mud on every tile (look, k, should show you mud) deactivate and/or remove your pond zones (via the zone menu) and then build your farm (b, p)! Don't forget you can size your farm plot with the umkh keys.

Advanced tip: I like to create a furniture stockpile that only accepts buckets near the water source to decrease the time dwarves spend running around carrying buckets.

What is the quickest way to get a trapezohedron?

Question

They're 2M when bought - is there a faster way to gain/earn/find a trapezohedron other than grinding for the gil necessary to buy it?

Answer

If you are patient, and don't mind getting really bored... Setup Vanille as your party leader, preferably with the Improved Debuffing weapon, and a whole lot of haste. Pick a fight with the big adamantoise right outside the Eden Palace, immediately summon your Eidelon to take out the legs, then send the eidelon home and spam the Death spell. I usually setup the other two party members as synergists to quickly pickup haste and faith.

Interestingly enough - I killed this guy before I ever walked into the Eden Palace, and he never crashed through the glass, it let me loot both treasure spheres located right there!

Some more tips for this technique can be found online.

Which tree type yields the most wood?

Question

To make the most of my wood farming I'd like to plant the tree type that will give me the most wood yield.

(I know the types have different spacing requirements- does that play a part in the answer?)

Answer

If you build tree farms underground plain trees are the best. If you keep the ceiling 7 blocks high the whole tree will be harvestable from the ground. Plain trees can grow when planted right next to each other unlike birch trees. Pine trees will not grow with a 7 block high ceiling.

However, if you plant plain trees too close together they won't grow much leaves. So it is easy to run out of saplings. I suggest planting them in rows and leave a block or two between the rows.

Is there some way of automatically farming wool from sheep?

Question

I would like to set up some way of autmatically farming wool from sheep in Minecraft. I have a farm, but unfortunately, sheep do not shed wool when they die. So all I get is leather, feathers and eggs. There was a suggestion involving pressure plates, dispensers and snowballs, but there is no more snow in beta. Does anyone know if sheep shed wool when they are damaged by cacti?

Any other suggestion on how to pull this off?

[I know that farming spiders is an alternative. But I would really prefer to use sheep.]

Does anyone know how far away you may walk from a mob before it despawns?

Answer

Here's an elaborate solution involving trapping a skeleton that appears to work well. It seems that this setup could easily be changed to use a snowball/arrow dispenser instead of a skeleton, however the business of keeping it fueled, and firing at the right time would be an issue.

Fastest way to make money in GTA IV multiplayer?

Question

I've been reading a lot about money-making schemes in GTA IV multiplayer, and everyone seems to believe something different works best. What is the one mathematically fastest way to make money?

Assume the player has access to the main game, The Ballad of Gay Tony and The Lost and The Damned DLC packs. Try to avoid answers that require boosters (people who are willing to help you specifically gain money), since they're few and far between.

Answer

Running Hangman's NOOSE over and over again with a solid group of people who know how the situation plays out exactly and can communicate is a great way to earn money. You can run NOOSE with random players, but if you aren't winning every time and doing so in just a few minuets the rate at which you earn money isn't as high as it could be. The OP might consider this a "boosting" answer since the money gained is higher when working with a group of well coordinated players, if so just disregard it.

I'd still say that Hangman's NOOSE is the best way though, because when it goes well you win rather quickly, and when things go bad, your group is killed rather quickly. The other forms of multiplayer (DM/TDM/Racing/Turf Wars/ect) can take much longer and don't return nearly as much money.

Just be warned if you are looking to get the Wanted achievement/trophy. The grind to it ($5,000,000 gained in multiplayer) will take forever no matter which method you end up using.

What are some designs for “safe” melon farms?

Question

I really like the wheat farms described in this answer, because it's impossible to trample farmland and harvested crops always bounce back at you.

Are there any similar designs optimized for melon farming?

I tried putting blocks directly above where melons grow, but then I can't get any slices that fall back to where the stem is.

Answer

I place a glass block directly over the stem. This ensures light gets through but I don't squish my melon seeds.

What areas offer serious soul farming?

Question

I'm already aware of:

  • The sealed area of Darkroot Garden.

This is normally a fantastic area to grind, but I'm currently in the Forest Hunter covenant and need to stay in it so I can purchase items from Shiva of the East.

  • In the Undead Burg, shooting the dragon causing him to kill the undead soldiers on the bridge.

This is fine for lower levels, but at SL50, 300 souls per go doesn't really cut it anymore.

Are there any other good areas for soul farming?

Answer

There's two more places I can think of. In order of progression:

Painted World of Ariamis

This is the place where I did my farming after Dark Root Garden wasn't cutting it anymore. First, you will need to:

  • Find the Peculiar Doll in the Undead Asylum on your second visit. For instructions on how to return to Undead Asylum, check this video. The doll can be found in the same cell where you started the game.

  • Reach Anor Londo and locate the big room where the Painted Guards are. You will find a huge painting on the wall. Descend to the floor level and touch the painting to be transported into the Painted World of Ariamis.

  • Progress through the level until you reach a sort of town square, where you will find a slew of Phalanx mobs. These are the creatures you will be farming.

  • Across this courtyard, you will find a door that opens up and leads you to the starting bonfire.

You will need an AOE damage spell for this method. Poison Mist is a good choice for low levels, since Phalanx are weak to poison. They move slowly, so you can run up to them and cast Poison Mist one or two times while moving in circles around them. Just wait for a few seconds and they will die. With the Covetous Silver Serpent Ring equipped, this method will net you around 9000 souls in a few seconds. Just run back to the bonfire and repeat.

If you are a caster class, you will be able to speed up the farming by using strong AOE spells. For instance, I play a faith build character. My Wrath of the Gods spell managed to kill all Phalanx with a single cast, netting me 9000 souls every 20 - 30 seconds. I spent more time running up to the town square than killing them. The Homeward miracle will speed up this process considerably.

Now this method requires you to side track from the main story progress. Another method you can try, which doesn't require you to do any side-quest is farming Dark Anor Londo.

Dark Anor Londo:

After beating the Ornstein and Smough encounter, you will meet Gwyneavere. If you hurt her she will disappear and Anor Londo will become Dark. Warning: Making Gwyneavere disappear means you won't be able to join the Princess' Guard covenant for the rest of your current play-through.

In Dark Anor Londo, only Painted Guards and Silver Knights will remain, the rest will be gone, including the giants and archer right outside Ornstein and Smough's fog wall. Instead, you will find two NPCs here. You can kill them for around 6000 souls with the Covetous Silver Serpent ring equipped. The trick is, they will only respawn if you leave Anor Londo and return. However, you can use Homeward Miracle to return to the previous bonfire where you rested at. The NPCs will also reappear.

Where is the best place to farm for Wool Cloth?

Question

In my server the price for Wool Cloth in the Auction House is very high, considering it's a low level item. What's the best place to farm it?

Answer

The easiest way to figure out where to farm an item is to have a look at the item's drop rates in Wowhead and find the mobs with the highest drop rate but also a large number of spawn points.

In this case, I had a look at the Wool Cloth page and found two good areas:

Can trees grow without sunlight?

Question

I've built an underground forest chamber in my main fort as a convenient lumber supply. It has a dirt floor and plenty of torches, but the trees I planted there haven't sprouted yet. I have heard that wheat will grow under torchlight (I believe X's Adventures in Minecraft mentioned this). Do trees also share this property?

Answer

Trees can definitely be grown underground with sufficient light. According to this thread on the Minecraft Forums, you need 7 blocks of space above the sapling. (Perhaps this condition isn't being satisfied.)

Best pattern for elevated lava or water?

Question

Related to this question, I am trying to create an elevated surface where I can put water. The surface below is made up of ladders/signs to keep the water flowing down, but still allows items (e.g., eggs) to pass through.

What is the optimal pattern for the ways in which the ladders would be laid out in, say, an 8x8 square area?

Answer

If you use signs, you can place signs on other signs and just cover the area needed. There is no way to use less than 1 sign per block though.

Signs placed on signs

How can I make an Automatic egg harvester in Minecraft?

Question

I have a breeding area filled with chickens. What I'd like to do is set up the area such that any eggs laid therein are automatically shuffled out of the pen to a place where it's easy to pick them up.

My current thought is that because chickens float I could replace all the grass with water. Then any eggs would float to the bottom of the lake. However from there I'm a bit stuck, as I don't know how to collect them once they're at the bottom. I'm thinking a water current of some kind, but how do I accomplish that at the bottom of a lake?

Any other ideas?

Answer

I've always held water containing the chickens up with signs, so there can be air below it. Then place another stream of water below this to carry the eggs to wherever you want them.

C C C <-chickens
WWWWW <-chicken pool water
----- <-signs
        <-air
WWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW <-collection stream

This should allow the chickens to float, but the eggs will sink into the collection stream. Let me know if this works out, haven't done this in several updates.

What is the minimum level one can feasibly reach the 3rd challenge chamber in Nier's DLC?

Question

What is the minimum level one can feasibly reach the 3rd "World of the Recycled Vessel" challenge chamber in Nier? I ask because the 3rd chamber of the DLC is supposed to have enemies that have a higher drop rate of Titanium Alloy than the robots in the Junk Heap.

At the time of asking, I am around level 13 and die in 2 hits in the first challenge chamber.

Answer

  • The 1st Door can be cleared right after starting part 2 of the game when you are in your low 20s. It seems the key is to have a strong weapon from that part of the game.
  • The 2nd Door will kill you in 1 or 2 hits in the first chamber at that level. It can be cleared easily in the mid-20s.
  • The 3rd Door can be cleared in the late 20s with a suitably upgraded weapon. Just be careful of the 3rd boss on the bridge, it can kill in 1 hit!

Final Fantasy VII - How to get Ribbons?

Question

I know that I can morph Master Tonberry in order to get a Ribbon, but he is a very tough guy...

Do you know any other way to get Ribbons?

Answer

Location of the Ribbons are as follows:
- Gaea's Cliff in a hidden passage (Disc 2)
- Temple of the Ancients in room V of the clock room (When accessible)
- By winning 10 Special Battles in the Gold Saucer at the battle square

Alternatively, you can get infinite more by morphing these enemies:
Master Tonberry (Northern Crater)
Ho-chu (Special Battle Square)

Also, it might be helpful to note that Yuffies ultimate weapon, The Conformer, does not take the morph damage reduction penalty, meaning she can still do 9999 damage with Morph. This allows Master Tonberries to be easily morphed.
It is also good to know that Master Tonberry can be located in the Nothern Crater Swamp area and has 44444 HP.

All information was taken from this guide.

What's the best technique for farming melons?

Question

I got some melon seeds from an abandoned mine chest. I naively planted them as I would wheat seeds, in a patch of grass, altogether. I came back to find that they'd matured into fully grown plants, but there wasn't a melon to be seen. What should I be doing?

Answer

To grow Melons, you need spaces to plant the Melons Seeds in, and Farmland blocks adjacent to those where the Melons can grow onto. Melons grow slowly until their stem grows to the maximum size, at which point a Melon grows on a Farmland block adjacent to where the stem grew out of (where you planted the seed). The Minecraft Wiki page on Melons has a nice section on farming them. They suggest using an arrangement like this:

S S S S S S S S S |
# # # # # # # # # |
# # # # # # # # # | S = Watermelon seed
S S S S S S S S S | # = Farmland
S S S S W S S S S | W = Water block
# # # # X # # # # | X = Random block
# # # # # # # # # |

What is a useful strategy to farm runes/gems in Diablo 2?

Question

As a follow up to my can I still dupe the hell out of Diablo 2 runes/gems, which I intended more for the single player fun factor, I am curious to know if there is a well developed strategy for obtaining gems and runes without duping?

This is focused primarily at playing online, on battle.net, but not necessarily exclusively. If it's a good strategy I'll likely try to perfect it in single player first.

Answer

Kill the Countess in the tower under the Black Marsh. Over, and over, and over, and over, and over.

She can't drop the very highest runes, but she can drop some pretty awesome ones. For the highest runes, you'll want to kill Baal. His rune drop rate is much lower, but it's still your best bet.

See Kotsu's comment below for more information on exactly which runes the Countess will drop for you.

Farming using Mob Spawners in Minecraft

Question

I have a couple of Mob Spawners surrounded by torches (thus rendered inert), and I want to try using them to farm enemy drops. What's the most efficient setup to automatically kill spawned mobs and collect their spoils?

Answer

Most mob farming techniques use a stream of water which collect all the monsters in the room to a central point, and then drowns them by pulling them underwater. Some other ways to kill them are:

  • Pushing them via a water current into cacti
  • Using lava to kill them
  • Making them fall really far so they die from the impact

Just as a note, most people just build enormous completely dark rooms (like this one) to farm mobs rather than using the actual mob spawner blocks.

Here are some screenshots from the link above:
