Can I play Seiklus in windowed mode?

Question

I recently downloaded Seiklus at the recommendation of a GamingSE blog.

I had it on my old laptop, and was enjoying the game; I would like to enjoy it on my new laptop as well. The problem is, I can't remember how I got it to play in windowed mode on the old laptop. So, my question is:

How do I set Seiklus to windowed mode?

Asked by Fluttershy

Answer

No, but there may be a workaround. From the comments on this archived thread made during Seiklus' development, changing windowed/fullscreen was not an option and the author never added it as per the changelog. The possible workaround is that the author added in different resolutions which according to this is toggled by Ctrl + R. I hope this helps.

What are the uses for the trophy items in Seiklus?

Question

I have finished Seiklus, and it was great, but I'm still wondering if I used everything to it's full ability.

There is a "trophy stand" of sorts on the map screen which holds a number of interesting items:

Interesting trophy stand

At first I thought they were just, well, trophies. Only shiny things to look at. Later on I realized that one of them actually has a purpose.

So now I'm wondering if the other trophies have a purpose. I didn't really notice anything else special happening while I was playing the game, but I would think that if one has an ability the others must.

So what are the functions of these items?

Asked by RedriderX

Answer

I don't know their names (if they even have official names), so I made some up. At least five of the seven "medallions" have a function.

There is an "official" walkthrough that also describes these items, and it comes to the same conclusions about the powers of each item. I've added (in parentheses) the names that the walkthrough's author gives each item.

From the left to right:

Bird (Invisible Platform) medallion - Looks like flying bird. Gives you the ability to detect where invisible platforms (you'll see blinking blocks) are located.

Plant (Claw) medallion - Looks like those (hidden) plants that eat you. Gives you the ability to see (you'll see a slight sparkle) those (pesky) plants, so that you can avoid being eaten.

Fish (same) medallion - Looks like a crescent-shaped fish with spikes. Makes one of the fish in the giant lake follow you.

(??) medallion - Looks like a cave or a shell. I have no clue what this does.

(???) medallion - Looks like a sailboat or something. I have no clue what this does, either.

Snake (White) medallion Looks like a snake in the upside down U shape. Lets you see where the hidden white orbs (white flashing dots) are from the map screen.

Star (same) medallion - Looks like a star. Gives you the power of the "W" (key)!

Why do I keep getting swallowed by black goo?

Question

This annoying black goo keeps sprouting up from the ground, engulfing me, and dumping me in a pit.

Why does it do this and how can I make it not happen again?

Answer

You have entered the domain of what I like to call the "Swamp Claws"(Since I have no idea what they are actually called).

As you have already seen, they love to lurk underground, snatch you up when you least expect it, and spit you out in the same, very inconvenient hole over and over. This for me was one of the most annoying areas of the game, but don't lose heart.

Swamp claws like to lurk in flat areas, and don't like slopes. So keep to the board walks and slopes where you can. But remember you can't jump while sliding down a slope.

There isn't much else you can do other than remember very closely where each one is located. There is a special item you can get however. If you look around the swampy area for secret exits and climbing ropes, you can find hidden in a chest containing the golden swamp claw, which grants you the ability of "swamp claw vision", so you can see a twinkling dot wherever a swamp claw is hiding.

EDIT: Here is a (hopefully) simple guide to the Golden Swamp Claw.

Assuming you know your way to the swamp/mud area, travel to the right of the entrance, as per the helpful and overly large arrow:

step1

You should then find a tunnel down-wards, take it (make sure you watch out for those swamp claws).

step2

Coming out of the tunnel, you should see some boardwalks. Follow them to the left of the tunnel exit.

step3

At the end of the platform, you should be able to see some small platforms that lead to a ledge above you. That's where you're headed.

step4

There won't appear to be much on the ledge once you reach, but just on the right wall is a hidden doorway (highlighted in the pic) that you'll need to take.

step5

Head through there and... BAM! SECRET PASSAGE! You'll find a friendly cat-sized rat waiting to guide you to the exit. (Not that you'll find the path that diffucult... and where was this cat-rat earlier?)

step6

There are other secrets here, (I'll let you find them on your own ;) ) but for now follow cat/rat and his pal to the huge, gaping, and very obvious exit and step on through.

step7

Alright, all that's left now is to do some platforming to the left...

[step8]

...descry yourself the chest, and...

[step9]

GOLDEN SWAMP CLAW ACHIEVED!!!

[result]

You will be able to see the effects of the Golden Swamp Claw immediately. As noted above, you'll see multiple small twinkles wherever a nasty swamp claw is lurking. I've highlighted the effect here:

[effect]

Here is a "map" of sorts. I've approximated the location of the screen shots and arranged them in relation to each other. Note that I don't really know where the secret passage is located (I hear it's a secret), so I just added to the bottom, with labels to mark entrance and exit locations.

map of sorts

Hope this helps you! :)

How can I reach this treasure?

Question

I noticed a treasure chest in Seiklus, but I can't seem to figure out how to the platform where it rests.

enter image description here

I've gone through the fish intestines and noticed it put me up above this location, but I couldn't seem to find a path that would lead me to where I needed to go.

How do I get to this chest?

Asked by Tristan

Answer

To get to it you need the warp ability, this video shows how to reach it:

And then at 2:49 he gets to the chest. If you are stuck before getting the warp ability you can check gamefaqs and search for "Hippo Crevasse"

Why is this fish following me?

Question

Long story short, I ended up getting lost in Seiklus and fell into some water. As soon as I started swimming around, I noticed a fish following me.enter image description here

It doesn't hurt me in any way, but I'm wondering:

Is there a reason this fish is following me?

Asked by Tristan

Answer

It means you found the Fish Medallion! Congratulations!

Yeah, the fish that follows you around is completely useless, as far as I can tell. The walkthrough found on the game's FAQ page also says so:

Section 3: The Sea [...]

You will fall down really far into a giant lake of fish. Immediately swim all the way to the right to find a rope. Climb up it to find a treasure chest that holds the Fish Medallion. When you jump back down into the water, a fish will be following you! It doesn’t serve any purpose, but it is cute.

I'm seeing bright lights at the end of this tunnel in Seiklus, should I be worried?

Question

I have been making some progress in Seiklus, finding cool stuff, and generally having a good time. Then I check out the map(once I read the instructions to find the map button,) and find that there are a number of blinking lights on certain area blocks:

blinking lights

They alternate between white and black, and they seem to me to appear in a rather random fashion. Is this a sign of some secretes I'm totally missing, or something else I should be worried about?

Answer

Well, I finally realized what the blinking lights mean.

While progressing through the game, I noticed that the lights did go away after a while. I finally figured out that the blinking lights are for areas that still contain elusive white orbs. So they act as reminders to return and search places that have missed.

Do I need to grab every orb?

Question

In seiklus, there are little orbs of various colours that you need to grab as you go along. Some of them I found very hard or frustrating to try to get.

Am I going to be able to finish the game if I miss some of them? I was treating them sort of like coins in Mario games, in the sense that it wasn't necessary to get 100% of them to finish the game. Was this a wrong assumption?

Answer

If you want to meet up with your girlfriend again, yeah. There should be 100 of each... six, excluding the white ones. The white ones are optional... do them after you get all the other (main) colors.

There's another ending waiting for you if you get 100%...

What do I do with the piano in the volcano?

Question

I am playing seiklus and got to the bit where there is a piano like object inside a volcano. I can jump on the keys and make music, and each key I hit also makes a different colour appear in the bottom of the two dots above the piano.

I can't seem to just walk any further, and there is nowhere I can really seem to jump to, either. What do I need to do here?

Answer

If I remember, the key positions and their colors are important to note as you'll be back later on. Have a go with the keys.

After you've had your fun, backtrack and go down the staircase. You should notice a big crack in the wall on the right once you reach a chain (I believe this is the one you climbed to get up). Head in and there should be an elevator waiting for you...

Don't forget the white orbs... gotta collect them all.
