Do I have to complete a mission to earn an achievement in SC2

Question

I have just started a level, quickly got an achievement I needed. Now can I just quit the level and still have the achievement or do I have to play and complete the level before I gain the achievement?

Asked by Ryan Murphy

Answer

No you don't have to complete the mission, however you do have to be connected online.

Why does the # mean beside trained units in SC2?

Question

In starcraft 2 there is a building that allows you to buy trained units and there is a cooldown on them. What does the # beside it mean and what happens when you get to 0? Does the # reset every map?

Asked by acidzombie24

Answer

I believe you're talking about the Mercenary building. As you surmised, the # displayed indicates how many more times you can hire that band of mercs.

It resets every map.

How exactly do different difficulty levels affect the gameplay in campaign?

Question

Just wondering, how exactly different difficulty levels affects to the gameplay?

Does it switches AI into more aggressive mode, gives more starting money to a computer, etc.?

Asked by Regent

Answer

So, your interface is always the same. Marines always cost 50 minerals, and they behave the same way.

In harder difficulties, the AI is more agressive (attacks sooner and more frequently) and is smarter (i.e. better control over units), the enemies have more HP / attack, there are more enemies to encounter (Example, in the second mission, there's a little alcove north of the starting base with minerals and vespene pallets, on easier difficulties, there isn't any force there, on harder difficulties, there's a lot more), and harder enemies to encounter (on the third mission, on casual, my wife encountered zero mutalisks)

I don't think they give more starting money to computers, but I don't think they need to. On easier difficulties, the computer doesn't even use a fraction of the money it gathers.

How do I avoid friendly fire in Starcraft 2 single player?

Question

I often use the attack-move command on my troops, and in the course of events sometimes click on one of my own and kill him/her instead.

Is there a method to avoid friendly-fire?

I could use the "patrol" command, but I find the P key is too far away for practical use.

Edit: I should mention I am playing on hard difficulty.

Asked by Bora

Answer

In the options, you can adjust your hot keys to the grid pattern.
This will change the hotkeys so you don't have to remember them...

I would suggest to use Attack Move for long distance Attack commands and Patrol for short distance, both keys will be next to each other which makes it more easier to choose between both.

Other than that, if you are into multi-player too, you might want to consider to learn the habit of attack moving your units through your opponent his army instead of in front.

If you are focus firing units you might want to consider to learn the habit to just (shift) right click on them instead so that when you are surrounding your opponent that you don't accidentally attack your own unit. Right clicking on your own unit cause your army to follow that unit, unless there's another next action in the queue to perform. So accidentally clicks on your own units have no effect when focus firing. Just make sure you don't click the ground instead, as they will walk instead of attack…

The grid pattern is Illustrated in the next picture:

How can I complete all “armory” achievements?

Question

I've almost completed campaign, bought all upgrades for infantry (and earned additional achievements, I don't remember it's name, let's name him "infantry armory achievement")... and discovered, that after "Gates of Hell" campaign there are no any income anymore...

I've tried to pass already existing missions another time, but they don't give money.

From what I see now the only option is to begin campaign again. Am I right?

Will my achievements be kept after campaign restart? I mean: don't I need to complete "infantry armory quest" again (and a lot of others too)?

Thanks a lot.

Asked by Budda

Answer

At first, the credits available to you in the single player campaign is limited to that from missions alone. However, once you've fully maxed out either the zerg or protoss research trees, you gain the ability to trade any future research points into 10k worth of credits.

There have been mentions of a glitch with the way the game handles this: if you replay a mission you've already beaten and acquire protoss / zerg research points within that mission, it is possible to get the Moebius foundation to "purchase research samples" from you, even though you failed to increase your net points (you already got them once). In this way, you can accrue as many credits as you need, and can buy all the armory upgrades in a single playthrough.

Update: This method has since been patched.

As of now, the best way to earn the armory achievements is to play the campaign multiple times, selecting different upgrades on each playthrough, as achievements are shared across all campaigns.

StarCraft2: How to get more research points?

Question

I've passed campaign once and want to do on the Brutal now.

After passing all 3 first missions I did the "Smash and Grab" - the 1st artifact missions. Upon completion I've discovered that I don't have laboratory available... Then I did "The Evacuation" - the 1st colonist mission.

I've passed the missions twice: - 1st time on Brutal level. Here I've collected all 3 Zerg artifacts and used one "re-load"; - 2nd time on Hard level to get "Sacrifice Nothing" achievement (Complete "The Evacuation" mission on Hard difficulty without losing or salvaging a structure). Actually I've completed "Handled with Care" achievement too (Complete "The Evacuation" mission on Normal difficulty without losing a Transport Truck). And also I've collected all 3 Zerg artefacts on 2nd pass.

When I've visited the laboratory I've discovered that I have 4 Protoss research points and 6 (!) Zerg points...

Question: What is a source of additional 3 Zerg points? As far as I know, till the end of all researches done no new research points are available when missions are completed.

Am I correct? Or each mission pass gives you all available missions research points?

P.S. Here is a similar question (http://gaming.stackexchange.com/questions/5695/i-missed-some-research-points-in-some-levels-can-i-replay-to-get-those-points), but it's answer is not clear for me.

Answer

If you're going back and RE-playing the missions, it'll take the research from the mission where you got the most research. So even if you did the normal mission and got 4 points, and then did the brutal mission and got 0 points, 4 points will be available in the next mission.

It won't double up though. I'm pretty sure about this: I did the whole campaign on hard, then went back and replayed every mission on brutal, and I know I didn't get extra research.

How smart are enemies on Hardened and Veteran difficulty on MW3 Campaign?

Question

I have been playing the campaign on normal difficulty, and even now, at times, I find myself reading war-related quotes.

I can imagine that enemies react faster and are much more accurate with increasing difficulty level.

What I really want to know is, the single-player experience is pretty linear and the enemies monotonous. They just don't move much and stare at you a long while before registering you stand right ahead

I'd like to see a bit more intelligence and tactics, like the Half Life marines. While some would suppress me with fire and nades, trying to get me out of my hide, others would try to flank me.

Is this what I am going to see when I up the difficulty to Hardened or Veteran, or am I going to just get shot faster from farther distances?

Answer

The enemies generally take more shots to go down, and they have better aim. You can take less hits before you go down. Frequently there are scripted sequences where you have to move up in order to stop enemy spawns, so you'll have to move quickly once you down the enemies in a room in order to stop them from spawning.

There's no difference in their AI or the quantity (aside from it being more difficult to stop the infinite spawns) from what I can tell.

I play for the achievements, so I always finish the game on Veteran, but it isn't difficult so much as it's frustrating. Often times you won't have time to stick your head out before they've almost completely killed you. Get used to the death and loading screens, because even if you're epic in multiplayer, they're still going to kill you often.

Sometimes the best strategy is to just sprint into the room before they can get into their scripted positions. If you do this fast enough, you might be able to push them back in certain situations. Other times, you're just going to want to load a fresh mag and unload as you walk down the hallway.

Is it even worth picking up weapons in the campaign?

Question

I've been through the first couple of chapters of the campaign, while constantly picking up and trying out any weapon dropped by enemies. So far, I haven't found a single weapon that was noticeably better than the ones I started with. In fact, most were distinctly worse.

So I ask to the members who have already finished the campaign: were there moments in the game were you picked up a weapon that was undoubtedly better than your original one? Was there a pickup, at any point, that made you glad you were picking up everything? Or should I just give up trying out every new weapon I find?

Answer

I don't pick up a second weapon beacuse its better then my first. I grab weapons so I can build an arsenal to deal with any situation.

For instance, if I'm doing a sniper mission the first thing I will do is replace my sidearm with the first shotgun, smg, or assult rifle I found. Carrying multiple guns gives you the versatility to always have the appropriate gun for the appropriate situation.

Finally, don't forget that its faster to switch weapons then it is to reload. Carrying a second gun you enjoy can make your charge 2x more awesome!

Hope this helps

What is the best strategy for beating the final Campaign Mission “All In” on brutal difficulty?

Question

Has anyone beaten this mission on brutal difficulty? If so what was your strategy?

I tried both paths:

Path 1 - Taking out the nydus networks

Path 2 - Taking out the flying units

I found path 1 to be significantly easier as the nydus worms spewing tons of units seems much harder to deal with than flying units. Especially later in the level when the worms are very far from your base and are guarded by spore colonies and overseers+hydra. Also, if you go mass tanks, Kerrigan will do AOE to your tank groups.

My current strat which got me to about 76% using path 1, is to mass battle cruisers and vikings. On the ground I use a few tanks and some flame towers.

For my next attempt, I will try mass BCs and Vikings, but will use a barracks wall at the choke points. Money is pretty tight (not enough mineral patches...), but I'll probably try making use of the zerg mind control towers too, which I forgot I researched.

If anyone has a better strat please chime in :)

Answer

Ok so I ended up beating it. 100%!

Here's a video of someone else beating it on Brutal with a different, and possibly better, strategy than I describe below.

Again, there are probably infinite ways to do it, but here is how I did it:

  • Heavy use of save and load. Save before Kerrigan shows up and after she retreats. If you lose too many units (like 3 BCs to Kerrigans stupid magic hand wave instakill bull), then reload.

  • Take out the Nydus worms as flying units are easy to deal with

  • Build BCs to make use of Yamato cannon on Kerrigan and the Leviathan (the giant flying guy).

  • Build Marines and medics; make use of stim.

  • Build a few Science Vessels to help with healing your BCs. Build them early.

  • Build, and never stop building, SCVs. Trust me, I had the research that lets me train 2 SCVs at once, and I NEVER stopped building them. You need them for repair and to keep up with the mineral gathering.

  • Keep SCVs near chokes to repair

  • Construct flame towers near the choke. If you didn't get flame towers, build a few planetary fortresses at the chokes and have a bunch of SCVs there to auto-repair (no seriously, it'll work, lots of HP, lots of splash damage).

  • Construct a few flame towers sporadically in your base to deal with random drop pods.

  • Construct Barracks at each choke point to serve as a wall between incoming enemies. This also helps keep Kerrigan back.

  • Get as many ship and infantry upgrades as you can. Do it early.

  • Make use of mind control towers. Build them early on the left and the right sides.

  • Use mind controls towers to grab as many brood lords and Ultralisks as you can. Broodlords are imba and you want to make use of the infinite infantry they can provide. Mind controlling Ultralisks is amazing too. Especially if you have medics there to heal them.

  • Build a mind control tower and turret behind your mineral line to mind control brood lords that attack from behind. Mind controlled units will NOT be affected by the nova blast (lulz)

  • Make sure you have mind control energy when the big ultra push happens toward the end of the mission.

  • Save a Nova blast for when the Leviathan attacks. It will decimate you otherwise because it constantly spawns Mutalisks and Broodlords

  • If Kerrigan or the Leviathan isn't around when you needed to nova blast, then it's likely that you need to reload a recent save. Though don't Nova blast too soon when Kerrigan shows up. The blast has limited range, and you want to wait for the next wave of flyers/worms that quickly follows her.

  • Just before the Leviathan shows up, start cranking out some vikings to deal.

  • The drop-pod research is useless. Get the Tech-reactor research.

  • If you ever lose too many key units or structures (especially in the beginning), reload from the last save. It will end up costing you the mission in the long run.

  • Tanks don't work so well because Kerrigan's area of effect attack can easily clean out 4-5 tanks and there's not much you can do. This makes units like BCs more cost effective because they can get out of the way.

  • Buildings work great at attracting Kerrigan's focus. She will spend her energy doing an AoE to the building and not doing it to your units. Also, keeping a building alive is much easier against her because they have tons of HP and huge surface area to repair

  • Don't use supply Depots at your choke. They do not have enough HP or surface area to repair. You aren't going to leave your base anyway (not with units that don't fly that is...)

More Alien Swarm Campaigns?

Question

I have played a bit with Alien Swarm now, and after 17 hours the default Jacob's Rest campaign starts to become known. Are there around any good campaigns? Do they plan to release other official campaigns?

Answer

As of August 2010, there are currently no other official campaigns other than Jacob's Rest. It is unknown whether or not more official ones will be released, so only speculation is possible at this point. However, the game shipped with a SDK so players could make their own maps and campaigns. If you check the game's official forums, you can find information there about custom maps and mods that players have created.

Where do I find custom made maps / campaigns for Elemental: War of Magic?

Question

Been a few weeks now since Elemental: War of Magic released, are there any singleplayer maps / campaigns out there already?

Google doesn't turn up anything useful.

Answer

It looks like there are quite a few user-generated maps on the developer's site at http://www.elementalgame.com/mods/type/maps/sort/downloads.

StarCraft 2 Continuing Campaign

Question

I've finished the campaign mode but i missed some missions (the ones of the crystal and others) and some armory and lab upgrades.

Is there any way i can continue the campaign and finishing those missions and researchs? Is starting a new campaing the only way to do so?

Thanks!

Answer

If you press "Continue Campaign" after finishing the last mission, it will bring up a window similar to the Missions Archives you could access during the game. For all of the missions where you could choose one mission or the other, both options will be available to play here.

The only mission that you can't play if you missed it is the Secret Mission. To do that, you'll either need to start a new campaign or load a save game from before you finished the mission where you unlock the Secret Mission.
