How to play a multiplayer team death match in MW3 indefinitely? (no scoring)

Question

I do not know if this is possible but I think the online team death match is too fast? The game ends every 10-20 mins when the score is reached. Is there a way or a mode that let's you play indefinitely without scoring or at least to join a game with extremely high score goals? Currently I have no choice and I am automatically joined in a random game. This is PS3 btw.

Asked by IMB

Answer

In private matches, you can customize the rules of the game and change things such as the time limit and score limit. However, you must then invite friends to play with you. Private matches are just that - private, and only open to the people you invite.

If you're looking to play a game against random people on the internet, you are limited to the playlists that are available within the game. None of the available multiplayer game modes are time-based in Modern Warfare 3.

That said, Team Deathmatch games tend to play pretty quickly, but if you just want to be playing and getting kills, you might try an "objective" game type.

For instance:

  • Search and Destroy tends to take longer and does not have a kill limit. The objective is to get a bomb to a bomb site, which many people ignore in favor of just killing each other.
  • Kill Confirmed requires that you pick up tags in order to get credit for a kill, so there are typically more kills per round than in other "kill enemies to win" modes.
  • Drop Zone also focuses more on holding a position and playing with killstreak rewards than on a specific number of kills.
  • Ground War mixes several game types and has a higher score limit, so more kills are required to win, although there are typically more players.

How does clan ranking work in Call of Duty Elite, and how can I increase it?

Question

In Call Of Duty Elite (Modern Warfare 3, PS3) I cannot figure out how to increase my clan ranking. I effectively added 9 friends to my clan, but the ranking is still at 1.

How does clan ranking work, and how can I increase it?

Answer

Currently there are very few ways of increasing your clan rank. Clan rank goes up by accumulating clan XP.

You can get clan XP by adding people to your clan who have "Founder Status" - this means people who joined the for-pay version of Elite right around the Modern Warfare 3 launch. Since most of these people are in clans already, and it's a one-time bonus, this is not really a good source of clan XP.

The "real" way of getting clan XP is participating in Clan Operations:

Clan operations award clans that finish in the bronze tier or higher. Bronze requirements may change from op to op, but generally if your clan finishes in the upper half of an operation, it will be rewarded.

These rewards include badges that are displayed in your clan’s showcase and Clan XP.

Only the clan leader can enroll in Clan Ops, and in order to get badges or XP, you're going to have to have your clan members play the designated game type during the operations period. There's more detail on the "Compete" tab of Elite, under the heading "What are Clan Operations," which is just above the photos of upcoming Clan Ops.

The MW3 events team has had a spotty track record with scheduling and awarding Clan Ops to date, so if clan ranking/XP is important to you, you'll want to check in early and often for new ops.

Where to buy Call Of Duty version 1 from?

Question

I searched for the CD of the first ever version of Call of Duty (version 1) in many malls and CD stores in Bangalore, India but didn't find. It seems to be out of stock and will never come back.

  • So any genuine online stores from where I can purchase? Do they ship to India? I have never ever purchased any tangible item online.
  • Do they sell only the key? In that case they don't need to ship the CD to my house because I already have ahem.. a pirated copy.

As you guys know for playing multiplayer on most servers (not cracked ones) you need to have a valid CD key. Only players with a valid key can join a game. Otherwise you can host a game but most others trying to join are also without valid keys so they are kicked out automatically and so there ultimately are just 1 or 2 players. Of course there are cracked servers but there too it sucks because of so few players. This game is really worth the expense.

Unfortunately, my system configurations are very low and I am sure that this version runs fine. Does Cod UO also have the same system requirements? If so, I could purchase that. However I am very happy with that version still because I never really played much multiplayer.

Answer

I believe there are many brand new Call of Duty Deluxe Edition (original + United Offensive expansion) offers on eBay, these usually do not cost more than 15 USD, plus ~5 USD for shipping. In this case you get full physical media, including CDs, instruction booklets with valid CD keys, DVD box and so on.

Alternatively you can purchase original Call of Duty on Steam. This will cost you around 20 EUR. United Offensive costs another 20 EUR, but you can buy both in a bundle for 30 EUR. In this case you get a legit download from Steam, with CD keys and possibility to redownload the game any time you want.

Generally, if there is a possibility to buy only an original CD key, the game's publisher will allow buyers to download full game for free from their website upon registration. This policy is supported i.e. by Blizzard games (Starcraft, World of Warcraft etc.). Of course, there is no shipping costs involved with digital distribution (Steam, Battle.net, etc.).

Call of Duty MW3 Guide for Black Ops Players

Question

Being a Wii gamer, black ops is my first real exposure to call of duty. So has anyone written a guide for transitioning from black ops weapons system (I see the upgrade system is quite different), perks, killstreaks, etc to MW3's approach?

Thanks.

Answer

I can't seem to find a good listing of the differences online, so I'll try to compile a short list. If you're interested in my personal opinion, I discussed my feelings about the major changes here. (warning: personal blog link) The first thing to note is that Modern Warfare 3 follows Modern Warfare 2 pretty closely, and isn't as related to Black Ops. There are a lot of similarities, however.

Perks

There's a lot of commonality between each year's installment of Call of Duty when it comes to perks. You've almost always got the "silent footsteps" perk, the "invisible to UAV/air support" perk, the "fast reloads" perk, etc. There's a listing of the perks on this page, which goes over the perks available. You have 3 perk slots per class, and much choose a perk from each tier, like both Black Ops and Modern Warfare 2.

Weapons

Weapons unlock based on your level, which goes up based on your XP, which you gain by completing matches, objectives within matches, kills, pointstreaks, bonuses, etc. There are no point costs for unlocks; whenever you get to a particular level you'll unlock all the items from that level.

Weapons also gain XP, which is measured separately. Each weapon has a separate XP meter, and the higher your weapon level, the more attachments and camo options you'll have available. You can also select a "weapon proficiency" which is similar to a perk, but attached to your weapon. In previous iterations of the franchise, one of your 3 main perks would usually allow you to equip 2 attachments on a weapon. In this game, this is controlled by a weapon perk. However, most of the weapon perks are new, and grant bonuses like increased damage, range, or reduced recoil. Attachments are mostly the same, such as sights, undermounted grenade launchers, front mounted grips, etc.

The available weapons are quite similar - assault rifles, SMGs, LMGs, sniper rifles, and shotguns all return, and most are pretty similar, especially compared to MW2.

Pointstreaks

In previous iterations, you got to choose a set of 3 bonuses that unlocked as you got a number of consecutive kills. The developers this time around decided to reduce the focus on kills, and try to reward a variety of contributions made by players. Shooting down air vehicles, capturing objectives, and gaining assists (if you have Hardline Pro as a perk) all earn you points towards your pointstreaks, among other things.

There's also the concept of "Strike Packages." There are three available, Support, Assault, and Specialist. Assault is the "classic" strike package, where your pointstreaks unlock as you gain successive points without dying. Support changes this up by allowing you to keep your pointstreak even if you die, but the rewards are more focused on bonuses to your team instead of dealing direct damage to your enemies. Specialist trades your normal pointstreaks for the chance to gain extra perks as you get successive points without dying, up to the point where you have all the perks on your class at the same time.

Most of the pointstreaks are things we've seen before, such as UAVs, air strikes, chopper support, sentry guns, etc. Care packages return, as well as the option to take a Juggernaut armor care package that makes you far more resistent to damage, but less mobile.

Equipment

Where you usually could take a tactical grenade, a lethal grenade, and a piece of equipment (ie, radar jammer, tac insert, etc) you now get one piece of lethal equipment (including grenades or 2 types of mine) and one piece of tactical equipment (such as a portable radar or flash/stun grenades)

Secondary weapons are more in line with Black Ops, where your selection is limited to pistols, machine pistols, launchers, etc.

Prestige

In previous games, prestige mode meant that you'd lose all of your unlocks and have to start over from level 1, as if you'd just bought the game. In Modern Warfare 3, you gain "prestige tokens" from successive prestiges, which allow you to (among other things) unlock gear from level one. You will have to level the gear up as if you just unlocked it, but you won't have to wait until you get back to your old XP levels in order to use your favorite weapons or perks.

Gametypes

Most of the multiplayer game types return from the previous games, although a couple of new modes have become popular. For instance, Kill Confirmed is very popular. It is like Team Deathmatch, but players drop tags that must be collected in order to get credit for the kill. This mode emphasizes close-range combat over long-range engagement.

Maps

The multiplayer maps feel smaller, and more of them are the size of Nuketown or Rust than in previous games. There are fewer Array or Wasteland-sized maps, for instance. It's much easier to roll a short-range class and dominate than it was previously. Shotguns and SMGs are much more frequent in classes than sniper rifles, although they still have their place.

Blind Eye Pro - What Qualifies?

Question

I was reading the description of the blind eye pro perk in call of duty modern warfare 3 perk. It says to destroy someone's streak item. Does that mean things such as destroying crates, or does that include shooting down spy planes, choppers, etc?

Thanks.

Answer

Anything that's a killstreak reward counts, so things like choppers, UAVs, SAM turrets, sentry guns, etc. If you can destroy it, and the enemy got it because of a killstreak, it counts.

I don't think you can destroy enemy care packages, so that's probably not something that counts towards this. I believe that shooting down the care package delivery chopper counts, however.

MW3: Do captures in Domination count towards pointstreak?

Question

The subject says it all, when playing Domination, do captures of a base count toward your point streaks? Seems like it id for me in one game; I got a support pointstreak award after capturing, but wasn't sure if that was related to something else (like the grenade I threw)...

Answer

Yes, capturing a point in domination counts the same as one "kill" for the purposes of pointstreaks. I don't know all the breakdowns for the various game modes, but I do know that capturing the flag in the relevant game mode counts the same as well.

You can watch your pointstreak counter in the lower right to see how much progress you're making towards your next streak. This can help you understand what counts and what doesn't.

Does each Call of Duty playlist require thousands of servers?

Question

How come Infinity Ward doesnt offer a hardcore playlist for ever game typ?. Recently they added hardcore domination, FINALLY. But my question is, do they have to have thousands of servers to support each game type or are they just restricting the playlist types for no reason?

Answer

They pick gametypes/playlists at their discretion. I'd suggest consulting the Call of Duty forums if you'd like to make a request. New playlists are announced on the forums as well, see this thread from December 16th about the addition of a couple of new hardcore playlists, for example.

Most multiplayer games of Modern Warfare 3, including all console games, are hosted peer-to-peer, where one player is acting as the host. In this scenario, servers hosted by Infinity Ward/Sledgehammer Games are only involved in matchmaking. Your system talks to these servers to determine which lobby to join and to find other players interested in playing the same game type who live in the same region as you do.

I have no facts about how many servers are running in order to support multiplayer matchmaking, but I do not believe there are thousands per gametype. An educated guess would be dozens or perhaps hundreds total across all gametypes. They likely have the ability to scale this number up and down as the game grows or wanes in popularity. I imagine that there is little load on the matchmaking systems per-playlist, and rather the load varies depending on how many people are actively searching for games at a given time. This is a hypothesis, however, and there's no way to know the facts without asking the developers directly.

On PC, it's possible to run a dedicated server, which means that one computer is responsible for hosting the game every time anyone plays. However, you will be playing an unranked game. This means you can't gain experience to the next level on a dedicated server. Instead, the server administrator chooses what gametype is played, as well as what unlocks are available. I am not aware if Infinity Ward hosts any of these servers. The intent seems to be to allow independent server admins to host game servers if they so choose.

What are the main differences between the Halo and the Call of Duty series?

Question

I've never played either in my life. What are the main differences between them? I hear COD is more realistic, while Halo lets you get into a lot of new places on the map that you wouldn't think of in the beginning. What are some other comparisons and contrasts between them?

(this is not a game-rec question, I am curious about factual differences between their gameplay)

Answer

I have played both games, so this comes from my personal experience. However, I do prefer Halo to Call of Duty. I am mainly comparing Modern Warfare 2 and Halo Reach. This is not exactly fair, as Black Ops comes out in a few weeks, but I haven't played it yet.

I've broken these differences down into the follow catagories:

Feel

The Call of Duty and Halo franchises are very different in terms of gameplay. The biggest difference is that Call of Duty goes for a realistic feeling, while Halo is more of an arcade shooter.

Killing

In Call of Duty, the guns and settings are realistic. Most guns kill in a few shots, and there are a lot of things outside of shooting another player, such as calling in a tactical strike, or a helicopter. Call of Duty maps are (from my experience) more complex and larger.

In Halo, killing someone is much harder. Most weapons take multiple shots to kill, so battles are more drawn out. There are power weapons, such a sniper rifle or rockets that kill in a single shot, but they are limited in ammo, and placed strategically on the map. While Call of Duty allows the player to spawn with almost any weapon, Halo usually allows the player to spawn with a base weapon, and requires them to pick up better weapons on the map. Halo Reach has expanded the weapon choices in a few game types (such as Invasion) allowing the player to choose between a set of weapons to spawn with, but players can never spawn with "power" weapons in default games, except specific exceptions, such as snipers only. Halo also has player driven vehicles in multiplayer, while the Modern Warfare games do not.

Movement

Call of Duty has realistic movement. The player has a low run speed, sprint, can prone, and has a low jump height. In Halo, the players moves fast, can crouch, and has a very high jump height.

Health

Halo handles health by giving the player a rechargeable shield, which will return to full charge outside of battle, and health under that which (in Reach, Halo CE and ODST) will not refill once diminished. Call of Duty has only health, which refills after a short time.

Game Modes

The type of games in both franchises have diverged. Both have base slayer, capture the intel/flag, plant the bomb, and many others. Both games also have a diverse custom game engine outside of online multiplayer.

Load Outs

Call of Duty has customizable classes, with any weapon, grenade type, and upgradable "perks", which are set by the player. Halo Reach has predefined load outs set for each game type that come with one or two weapons, grenades, and an "armor ability" which gives the player an ability not normally in the game, such as a jet pack or sprint. This goes back to the core of Halo, where every player starts the same.

Rewards

Another big difference between the two franchises is how they reward dedicated players. In Halo, every person starts the game exactly the same. Everyone spawns with the same weapon, or is allowed to pick from a pool of the same weapons, so everyone begins on an equal footing. In Call of Duty, players are rewarded with better weapons, and better loadouts. This is controversial in video games, because it gives the better players, who have played the game more, better weapons than less experienced players. In Halo Reach, players earn credits which allows them to customize their armor, but this only changes the armor cosmetically, and does not provide any other benefits.

Halo allows players to customize and even build new maps through "forge", which is not possible in Call of Duty. Current Call of Duty games do not have a way to watch past games, but this is being added in Black Ops.

Meta

Not a part of the games themselves, but Call of Duty is multiplatform, while Halo is only for xbox.

Steam + Call of Duty 4 problem

Question

I just download Call of Duty 4 from Steam and every time I open up the multiplayer I get the following message:

Your computer appears to have changed since the last time you ran Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. Would you like the game to configure itself optimally for your new hardware?

Is there a way I can fix this?

Answer

It's likely that the game is trying to save your configuration settings and failing. Try checking whether or not the files in your CoD4 directory are write protected or not. By default, Steam installs CoD4 to:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\call of duty 4

But, this may vary depending on your Windows version, 32/64 bit, how you installed Steam, etc.

You will want to at least check all of the .cfg files, although one person had better luck making sure that all of the files in that directory are not write protected.

Some people speculate this is an issue with file permissions caused by the filesystem changes in Vista/Win7, although others have reported issues with Windows XP as well.

For reference, there's a help thread on the Activision site for this, but I doubt that the suggestions there would help.

How can I become a better CoD player?

Question

I've been playing CoD games on my Xbox for a few years now, and I feel like I've hit a plateau. At first I got shot up so quickly it made my head spin, and I'd easily die 20 times a round and perhaps get one kill.

These days I can hold my own, and I typically average around 1.4 K/D (If I'm playing K/D focused). However, I still feel like there is a class of player that is far beyond my skills. I encounter these players and they win against me 90+% of the time, and I don't understand why. Sometimes I feel like I may as well toss a coin at the start of the round to determine whether I crush the other team or they crush me.

I generally just blame it on lag, or perhaps that other people practice more or have better reflexes. (kids these days, get off my lawn, etc) However, I feel like I'm missing something here that's preventing me from doing better.

If you're an "excellent" or "pro" CoD player, what's the secret? How do you consistently win encounters with other players? Are there any specific strategies you employ? Is there anything I can do besides practice more, and hope for the Lag Gods to shine down on me?

Currently I'm playing MW3, so any MW3 specific strategies are welcome, but I feel like there's enough overlap between CoD games (which has its ups and downs) that even generic advice would be useful.

Answer

Take your time

It's slightly heading towards being a camper, but take your time. You don't need to run all the time, only run at times where you know you are very unlikely to be shot or can do anything about it if you are. It's a little bit frustrating, but then balance that with having to respawn.

For example, stairwells - no point walking slowly up them as someone at the top will slot you more than likely.

If in doubt, flash the corner.

Heard gunfire? Seen dots nearby? Flash a corner before running round it. You always get more flash grenades at respawn :)

This includes areas that you know there's a likelyhood of someone being there. Going to a point in Domination? Flash it. A flag in CTF? Flash it. Even if you don't actually get the person properly disabled - the hit markers will indicate someone there.

Look for gaps that others won't.

MW3's terrain is quite complex, and there'll be spaces in the fences or gaps in bushes that you'll see before you are seen. Not saying you should hang around them - but they can be useful as you move forward.

Stick to the shadows.

Simples. More difficult to see you if your opponent is in the light and you are in the dark. Also, if you can, mix it up with crouching, dropping or sidestepping on encountering an enemy. Take the initiative from them, make them react.

Think about the map.

Where are the kill zones? Should you be in the kill zones? No, thought not. Big wide open spaces with areas of cover all around? Why go through the wide spaces? Always run that way? Why? Do you think other people will do the same? Probably. What about trying a different route?

Just some things to think about.

Speed proficiency

Question

Does the Speed proficiency make a big difference and does it make up for the loss of lightweight on Sub machine guns? And do you notice the difference on Light machine guns? or is it not noticeable enough to be affective and be a "replacement" to the Lightweight Perk that was in MW2?

Answer

While not as dramatic as the lightweight perk it definitely does make a difference. A player's run speed is based off of the 'mobility' stat of each gun. It can still help balance some of the clunkiness of an LMG.

As far as effectiveness, movement speed is one of the best defensive stats in the game. The ability to get behind cover, flank, and the speed at which the enemy has to aim all makes it a viable choice. As you may recall from MW2, player with lightweight are always harder to kill.

How to get bullet penetration kills in MW2?

Question

What do you have to do to get a bullet penetration kill in MW2? I've been stuck trying to complete the extended mags challenges because I'm not getting the penetration kills required.

Answer

Attach FMJ to the weapon you are trying to complete the challenge with. Then follow an enemy with your fire as they run for cover. Or otherwise try to get them behind cover once they are hiding. Often, you can easily spot someone behind a window or a wall when the barrel of their weapon is sticking out. Easiest to shoot through is sheet metal like the most walls on Scrapyard.

Why are Aspyr COD games so expensive in the Mac App Store? [closed]

Question

In the Mac App Store, Aspyr is selling the following COD games for super inflated prices:

  • Call of Duty: $19.99
  • Call of Duty 2: $29.99
  • Call of Duty 4: $49.99

Why are they so expensive?

Answer

The price of an app in the Mac App Store is set by the publisher. Aspyr is charging so much for their ports because, presumably, they believe people are willing to pay those prices.

Fastest way to level up in Modern Warfare 2 / Black Ops

Question

What is the quickest way that you have found to level up in MW2?

EDIT: I've been playing a lot of Hardcore CTF lately with friends... this has been getting me a lot of XP... we would just hold the flag and play for a draw the first 2 rounds and cap in the 3rd round if possible...

i'd say 8k up to 25k xp per round..

CTF XP

Answer

I would say avoid big games especially Ground War. It seems it's easier to get kills because there's more people but in fact it's a lot harder to get high kill streak because of bigger chance of getting killed.

Do learn the maps as fast as you can so you can easily pick good spots and avoid those from where you can get killed from easily. Watch killcams for that (as was suggested in the answer to another question).

Unlock challenges for the same gun to get optimal performance out of it. Almost every gun (at least from assault rifles) can be configured to be effective.

Lastly, try to play stealth to avoid many deaths and therefore build higher streaks. Use silencer, Ninja and Cold Blooded for that.

Is Call of Duty: Black Ops based on the same engine as Modern Warfare 2?

Question

I am planning to get black ops, but I need to know that my machine will be able to play it. The typical system reqs that they have offered on steam are not quite decipherable to me, as I've got a Macbook Pro and despite my initial expectations, MW2 runs fine on it in bootcamp with xp-sp2. I'm just curious as to whether or not Black Ops will run at around the same quality.

Also, I would like to know if they are based off of the same engine and if so, what modifications have been made? (which would answer my other question)

Answer

Hey man, I'm in the same unsure position as you. Macbook Pro 2.66 core 2 duo 2.72 GB RAM Nvidia 9600MGT BOOTCAMP

It seems that everything is fine and can be handled by a Macbook Pro except for the CPU. "Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 or AMD Phenom X3 8750" seems to translate to a 2.93 core 2 duo which may be a problem unless you have one of the newer slightly more powerful Macbook Pros.

Hope this helps.

Spoiler: What happens when the Call of Duty 4 - Modern Warfare solo campaign is beaten on a higher difficulty?

Question

I played through and beat the solo campaign of Call of Duty 4 - Modern Warfare on the Recruit difficulty when I first purchased the game a long time ago. I vaguely remember the game telling me to try beating it on a higher difficulty. Do you get a multiplayer perk or something?

Answer

As far as I know, the only difference is (on 360, possibly on PS3 too) there is an achievement for beating the game on one of the top two difficulty settings, and several achievements for beating groups of missions on the top difficulty setting.

In Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 what is a good multiplayer kill to death ratio?

Question

I want to get better at the multiplayer in Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2? What is a good kill to death ratio?

Right now for every kill I get I die about 10 times. What should I be shooting for?

Answer

Kill / Death ratio isn't that important really. For example, mine is about 0.7, but I regularly top the scoreboard.

Just focus on getting a weapon / perk setup that works for your play-style and have fun with that.

Prevent Fall Damage

Question

In Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, what kinds of things can you land on to soften fall damage?

Edit: I'm looking specifically for things to land on. My perks are already set to a configuration that I'm happy with, so I don't want to change them - I just want to know what to keep my eye out for when jumping from high places

Answer

The best thing to do is land on a mattress. For example, there are mattresses at the bottom of the sniper ledge on Afghan, and it always amazes me the number of people who miss them. If you are very careful, you can often 'slide' down things, but that is touch and go.

EDIT: Oh yeah... and commando pro. I totally forgot that one.

In Modern Warfare 2, is it a realistic strategy to play free for all mode with a LMG?

Question

In Modern Warfare 2, is it a realistic strategy to play free for all mode with a LMG?

Is this a wise strategy? Should I go for a more "all round" fitout/perks when playing free for all? I seem to get a bunch of kills but get nailed on the smaller maps and anywhere with boxed killzones/corners.

Answer

Its 'realistic' to play with any gun. An LMG is a very 'well rounded' gun. If your having problems pulling it up in time use a slight of hand/ steady aim combination. You can begin to shoot from the hip while pulling your gun up.

Most of this game is recognizing the strengths of your gun and sticking to areas that utilize it! For example, if you use an RPD stick to open areas. On the map 'Wasteland' stay outside of the bunker and try to engage your enemies at mid -> long range. With the staggering power of secondary guns in this game, any primary gun is absolutely reasonable. Stick with a pp2000, g18, or shotgun to balance out the mid -> long range requirements of your LMG (a close -> mid range secondary to use when your LMG is too clunky)

The RPD with a grip is my favorite gun in the game: my k/d is 5. If your looking for a higher kill/death use the ACR, UMP, or Scar.

Hope this helps

Tips to complete Call of Duty - Modern Warfare 2 Special Ops and gain 3 stars

Question

I've completed the Campaign mode of Call of Duty - Modern Warfare 2. I want to complete Special Ops in the game. I'm stuck there in the pit itself. We have to complete the pit in 35 seconds to get the three stars. I was able to get 2 stars only till now, no matter how many times or how hard I tried. Can you give me some suggestions like Shoot from the Hip rather or shoot while running rather than aiming down.

Answer

It's much easier with a co-op partner. When I did it, we split the targets between us in a predefined fashion so we had the whole run choreographed. I think aiming is necessary but only for a split second i.e. aim-shoot all at once.
