How can I fix the mouse lag on the PC version of Dead Space?

Question

When I try and play the PC version of Dead Space the mouse is sluggish and unresponsive regardless of how high I set the sensitivity. Is there a fix for this?

Answer

Usually this means that vertical sync is set, and you need to unset it, it's one of the most annoying things ever from computers that are slightly behind recommended specs.

Dead Space, all the little meat pieces are attacking me!

Question

I'm playing Dead Space demo for the Xbox 360 and this thing is sick. And when I say sick I mean, dissolving-puppies-with-acid-and-feeding-poor-children-with-the-resulting-paste sick.

Anyhow, I'm using some weapon that cut the things into little pieces, but the little pieces jump at my neck and kill me, I shake them once but they attack me again.

What is the best strategy to kill these horrid undead meats?

Answer

If you're talking about the Swarm:

Swarm: Swarms are the creatures that come from a Pregnant who has been shot in the belly, and sometimes are found in independent swarms or inside item crates. They are extremely weak, but tend to swarm en-masse and do a lot of damage to Isaac by attaching themselves to his body. However, their weakness and the density of their swarms can be cleverly used against them. They appear as a small lump of green flesh with small tentacles, and move by rolling with their appendages. They can leap great distances.

then I would heartily recommend the force gun. One shot and they are all toast. On the higher difficulties where you don't want to waste any ammo at all, use stasis and then stomp the little buggers.

How do you make a melee attack?

Question

How do you melee attack (swing your hand wielding the weapon) in Dead Space? I know curb stomp is RB next to fallen enemy.

Answer

I can confirm it's the right trigger. I just checked on my Xbox 360. It's really a last-ditch sort of thing; I wouldn't suggest counting on it.

What should I focus on upgrading first in Dead Space?

Question

Specifically, this is a first playthrough on Medium difficulty. I've read that I should try to keep at least one Power Node on me at all times in case I run into a locked door. I am wondering what I should focus on increasing first for survivability: Rig, Stasis Module or my weapons (the only one of which I have is the Plasma Cutter currently).

HP seems like the obvious choice but I'm wondering if upgrading my Stasis Module first will end up preventing me from taking damage in the first place. I'm not sure how often I should be using my Stasis, but it seems like I should learn to use it well pretty early on. An extra 20 points in Energy would give me another shot I presume. I have no reference for how much longer 2 points of Duration will give me though. Is that just straight up 2 seconds? On the other hand, upgrading the Plasma Cutter might also help with the damage prevention. I'm not sure though.

I don't plan on going for the Plasma Cutter only playthrough yet because it's just my first run.

Answer

In my experience, the difference between a fully damage upgraded gun and one that isn't fully upgraded is ridiculous. I would absolutely recommend upgrading your plasma cutter first; figure out the path that will get all the damage upgrades in the shortest number of nodes and follow that one. Once you do that, either focus on your rig or figure out what other weapon you like.

I found stasis upgrades to be the least useful; something only to take when you don't know where else to put your nodes. I'd also recommend focusing on only 3 weapons in a single playthrough. Every weapon in the game is fully viable when fully upgraded (except perhaps the flamethrower IMO), so figure out a weapon to upgrade and upgrade it all the way to the end. Trust me, using upgraded weapons makes the game both much easier and much more enjoyable.

Even though you don't want to do a plasma cutter only playthrough right now, the plasma is and will always be a great fall back weapon. Having it upgraded will make life a lot happier in general.
