How are various shielding spells in demon's souls affected by increasing the Magic skill (not intelligence). Duration? Shielding effect? Amount of MP spent?

I want to consistently play (co-op) Demon's Souls with a friend online. Assuming we are both new to the game:
What is the earliest we can start playing together? Can we start playing together immediately after creating a character?
How can we play together?
How can we ensure we stay connected as long as possible?
Co-op experience in Demon's Souls is a bit limited. First of all you can play with a friend only for a single level, and only in levels where you have not defeated the Boss Demon yet. Whether you complete the boss fight or die in the other players world you will always be transferred back to your world.
A player can be summoned in another player world using a Blue Eye Stone. You can find a more detailed description here, on Demon's Souls wiki.

No, you will not.

From Unknown Soldier to Renowned Hero, plus for defeating bosses you get souls which you can use to gain various amounts of souls. It would be nice to know how much each is worth. For example, to not spend them and have 'em wasted if you die and can't get back to your bloodstain.

I'm picking up Demon's Souls again so I can play through it before the servers close. However, while trying to plan for a trophy run and somewhat efficient playthrough, everything I've read recommends playing in offline mode in order to make it easier to get Perfect White/Black World Tendencies.
If I play offline, will I still be able to get the trophies? I'm wondering how exactly this works if I need to be signed out of PSN in order to play offline. If I don't get them while playing offline, it partially negates trying to go for an optimized run in the first place...
I've checked out a few sources, and it looks like it is possible to acquire PSN trophies while offline. They just don't sync up to your online profile until the next time you sign-on.

I've recently started playing Demon's Souls, and I was wondering what use the fog barriers served. There aren't any prerequisites to go through them; you only have to hit X to "Enter Fog" and the barrier then disappears. You can freely run back the way you came, so it doesn't seem to be a one-way gate that blocks you from exploring earlier areas of the level. Is there some purpose I'm missing or that is explained later in the game? Does it trigger a save? I'm clueless here.
They simply divide an area from another. If you put down a soul sign (using the blue eye stone or red eye stone) it will disappear if you enter an area marked with a fog barrier. (you will have to put down again the sign if you want to be summoned) Consider them as doors to other areas of the level. No big deal ;)

I just got a hold of Dark Souls but I have never played Demon's Souls before. I know the games are related and was just wondering to what degree in terms of storyline, characters, etc.
According to the developers, Dark Souls is not a direct sequel of Demon's Souls but a spiritual successor. So the story are not related even though the mechanics are really close, and the game are made by the same director and producer.
From an interview of the game director Hidetaka:
"What we we want to clear up is this is actually not a sequel to Demon's Souls - we're treating this as a brand new game created by the same director and producer," Miyazaki-san told CVG in an interview.
"Again it is created by the same director and producer, so the base concept and themes are very similar. However, the story itself as well as a lot of the game features have been recreated so that we can present this as a brand new title."

I am intrigued by the Multiplayer offered by Demon Souls and after hearing so much about it I am quite keen to give it a try. The problem is I have not touched a PS3 controller before (and it has been a while since my SNES :))
The game is hard, I know that, but I want to know if the controls add to the difficulty. Do I require some experience with a PS3 controller before starting Demons Souls?
I bought my PS3 a few months ago, and the first game I bought was Demon's Souls, and I had no problem with the controls. I also never owned a PlayStation console before (although my sister had a PS2, for which I played through a couple games).
As such, no. The controls shouldn't add any additional difficulty to the game - and if you did find some due to the controls, they shouldn't last anymore more then 30 minutes, by which point you'll know the controller well.

In regards to your first question, yes. So long as the shield is in your active equipment slot, you will receive bonuses from it. The easiest way to test this is with the Adjudicators Shield, which grants you health regeneration.
As for your second question, no. You only receive bonuses from the equipment in your active equipment slot.

Yesterday, I killed the Dragon God in Demon's Souls. Since I died a few times trying, I didn't do it with pure white tendency. Afterwards, I got a glimpse at the Dragon Buster Sword in the rock and realized that I needed to kill the dragon.
If I get the tendency to full white again, and kill him as a phantom helping another guy, will I be able to get the DBS or do I need to do another play through?
You will need another play through. The reason for that is that you are not able to carry over items from a friend's game to your own.
I should point out that Demon's Souls has a New Game+ mode (along with New Game++, New Game+++, et cetera), which increases the difficulty of the game, and carries over your items and levels from your first game. New Game+ unlocks when you beat the game. So you don't need to make a new character to get it.

In the fight with the first boss (the winged demon with the giant club) I died because it was so difficult. The game does continue on afterwards. But I wonder, is it possible to defeat him, and do you get anything for it?

BOSS BATTLE : VANGUARD [BV]This boss wasn't meant to be defeated, but stories of the hardcore prevailing are many.
It has 2 slashes, a direct overhead slash, and a horizontal forward slash. Not only that, but it also has a body press attack when players attempt to flank it too much.
A tactic for winning, is to stay under it's sword arm, and keep slashing it, until it does it's body press attack. At that point, roll back, and then resume slashing it.
If you do win, you'll score yourself a [Gripless] katana, and a [Grey Demons Soul]
Either way, win or lose, you die. D:

I'm playing Demon's Souls, and dying a lot. I've seen a message that says "while in soul form, your HP is halved." Other than starting a new game and not dying, how can I get out of soul form?
In order to turn back into Body Form from Soul Form, you need to either:
I wouldn't worry too much about being in Soul Form. It's definitely not necessary to start a new game, as you will likely end up dying again anyway. In fact, if you want to deliberately shift World Tendency, you will probably end up purposefully killing yourself more than once. Many people spend most of their game in Soul Form in order to minimize the effect on their World Tendency.
Hint: Wearing the Cling Ring in Soul Form, your health is only reduced by 25% rather than 50%.

I finished the first stage of the Boletarian Palace (1-1) and I'm trying to clear the second (1-2) and the first of the Stonefang Tunnel (2-1). What order for clear all the stages do you recommend? I prefer a list order by difficulty but any order is welcome with a good explanation.
Generally you want to plan your route based on your class. Each level has different equipment sets lying around for you to pick up. That having been said, I would personally go something like 1-1, 1-2 (1-2 is really quick), 4-1 (so you have access to a good farming spot, plus the regen ring and crescent falchion), 3-1 (there are 2 or 3 armor sets here, and it's not that difficult besides the damn Cthulu heads), then all of 2, the rest of 4, the rest of 3, 5, and then back to 1.
Once you get a little more experience, you're pretty free to go in whatever order you want. The power levels in the stages are all relative (the first section of each stage is weak, second is hard, then there's a boss), so explore a little.
