Is there any point in collecting puzzle pieces in Donkey Kong Country Returns?

Question

This is very similar to this question, except mine is about puzzle pieces (although I'm curious for a more satisfying answer to that question as well).

Does anyone know if there are rewards (other than getting image gallery or music gallery stuff updated) for collecting all the puzzle pieces? Also, what about beating levels in Mirror Mode or (like the other question) Time Trials?

Asked by Jeff

Answer

No there is not. The extra gallery items are the only reward.

Is there a reward for earning all gold medals when Donkey Kong Country Returns is in time attack mode?

Question

In Donkey Kong Country Returns, after beating a level, you unlock Time Attack mode, where you have to beat the level within certain time thresholds to earn gold, silver or bronze medals. Earning gold and silver medas is insanely hard, requiring near-perfection.

Do I get anything by earning all gold medals as opposed to just earning any medal?

Answer

After completing world 1, Jungle, I went back to find all the puzzle pieces and K•O•N•G letters, and earn a time-attack medal in all the levels. When I found all puzzle pieces and letters in world 1, but before I earned time-attack medals on every level, the hidden 1-K Platform Panic level unlocked/appeared.

This leads me to believe that you don't get anything for earning any time-attack medals.

Are there more Golden Temple levels?

Question

So last night I unlocked and completed level 9-1. So I now have all the K-O-N-G letters and all the puzzle pieces. I went to view the image gallery, since I have collected all the puzzle pieces, and I noticed that the "Golden Temple" gallery has a picture of level 9-1, and then lots of other levels I've never seen: a minecart level wrapping around a giant banana, a Super Paper Mario style level, and a Virtual Boy level, among others. Are these real levels that are unlocked by completing enough mirror mode or time trial levels? It seems weird that there would only be one level in world 9. I've checked the three FAQs on GameFAQs and none mention any levels beyond 9-1, but they all appear to be incomplete too.

Answer

No, there is only the one golden temple level. Completing mirror mode nets you a 200% completion, the remaining gallery unlocks, and bragging rights, but no additional golden temple levels.

What are any special effects/methods of killing enemies in Donkey Kong Country Returns?

Question

I discovered a neat little thing in level 1-3 of Donkey Kong Country Returns for Nintendo Wii: early on in the level there are three enemies all in a row: two birds and a drum thing. With careful jumps, I can jump on both birds (killing each on one hit) and land on the drum three times (killing it) without hitting the ground. It seems to me this nets me three banana coins!

What specifically is going on here? Are there other such bonuses for killing enemies? For example, can you do a similar thing by rolling? What other special, unique ways to kill enemies should I be looking out for, or is "Mario Brothers" consecutive jumping the only one?

Answer

You can consecutively jump on enemies. On the third and subsequent bounces, you'll get banana coins. I've read online that when you get to the eighth bounce, you start to get balloons, but I've never gotten that many. A good place to try is level 2-2, Sloppy Sands. After the first checkpoint, look for the squid cannons with a platform above.

Killing multiple enemies with the same barrel will also earn you banana coins in the same way (one coin for each enemy starting with the third). This is trickier to pull off as it requires a barrel and an uninterrupted surface with at least three enemies.

You don't get anything for rolling into multiple enemies. That would be nice, especially on levels like 1-4, Sunset Shore.
