Where are the warp zones?

Question

In which levels are the Warp Zones located in Super Mario Bros. and how do you get to them?

Asked by alexanderpas

Answer

  • Level 1-2: Warp to World 2, 3, or 4
  • Level 4-2: Warp to World 6, 7, or 8
  • Level 4-2: Warp to Word 5 (Yes, there are two on this level)

The following detail came from this site.

Where to find warp zone #1 hidden in level 1-2

You will find the first Warp Zone located at the end of level 1-2. In order to reach it, you will need to ride the previous elevator to the top and then jump onto the brick ceiling. Run all the way to your right and you will find the Warp Zone. Enter the corresponding Pipe to skip to world’s 2, 3 or 4.

Where to find warp zone #2 hidden in level 4-2

This level contains two Warp Zones, one to level 5 located at the end of the level, and this Warp Zone that takes you to levels 6, 7 and 8 located in the middle of the level. To find this Warp Zone look for a high three-brick-long platform that is too high for you to reach, located across from the first elevator platform. There are some invisible blocks that you will need to make appear in order to reach the far left block, which contains a vine. You need to hit the invisible blocks from below to create a staircase allowing you to reach the Vine. To do this, make the first two lower blocks on the righter side appear. They will start to create a staircase. Then hop on them and break the two bricks above. If you haven’t already activated the vine, try to do so now, and then make the following invisible blocks appear if you need them to reach the vine. Climb the vine and you’ll reach the Warp Zone that can take you to worlds 6, 7 or 8 depending on which pipe you enter.

Where to find warp zone #3 hidden in level 4-2

To reach the final Warp Zone (note that you can only take one Warp Zone since both are on the same level), you will need to reach the ceiling from an elevator platform and then run all the way across it to the right, just like you did in level 1-2. This Warp Zone will take you to World 5.

Did the original Super Mario Bros. contain a running glitch?

Question

I've found a version of Super Mario Bros online. However, the game contains a glitch. If you run continuously, Mario's legs will stop moving for half a second or so, while he is still moving forward. Did this happen in the original NES version of the game as well?

Answer

I don't think so. Could just be a glitch with the port.

Is it possible to jump over the flag-pole in Super Mario Bros?

Question

When I was younger, I remember there was a persistent rumour that claimed that under certain circumstances it was possible to jump completely over the flagpole at the end of each level. Every time I jump for the flagpole and my 5000 points, I still remember this and wonder about it. On a few occasions, it seems as though I'm about to make it! Mario is on course to leap to freedom! However I always find myself "pulled" back to the top of the flagpole.

Is there any way to completely clear the flagpole at the end of a level?

Answer

Yes, but there's really only one level it's possible on, World 3-3:

Game Trailers provides a great video about the Mario Flag Pole jumping myth in an episode of Pop-Fiction.

But it can also be done with the Game Genie or other "hacks".

Differences between Mario Bros for the NES and 25th Anniversary Super Mario Bros?

Question

As part of the 25th anniversary celebrations, Nintendo has released a couple of Wii bundles that include some sort of variant of Mario Bros:

25th Anniversary SUPER MARIO BROS is pre-installed, the design is partially rearranged from the original SUPER MARIO BROS for NES

Does anyone know what the difference is?

Answer

From the screenshot shown on that page, it appears that the coin blocks have been relabeled with "25". I hope, at least, that this was the only "partially rearranged" issue in the 25th anniversary of a classic.

How can I get fireworks?

Question

What are the requirements for making fireworks appear at the end of a level in the original Super Mario Bros.?

Answer

From the Super Mario Wiki:

At the end of every level in Super Mario Bros., with the exception of a castle level, fireworks would go off when Mario or Luigi entered the tiny castle (if the last number of the timer is 1, 3, or 6 at the end of the level). If the last number was 1, one firework would go off; if the last number was 3, three fireworks would go off and so forth. Each explosion would award the player with 500 points.

The page also details the appearance of fireworks in numerous other Mario titles.

How do you take out the Hammer Brothers in 1985 Super Mario Bros?

Question

They always kill me or make me little. I have literally not found a way to be able to kill them. The ones that are on the blocks like in this picture aren't as bad because you can hit the blocks to take them out. The problem are the ones that are just standing there say, on a set of stairs or something.

Is there some trick to this that I am just not getting?

enter image description here

Answer

The trick is all in the timing. It's a lot harder to time your way through two sets of hammers (ala in the above case), but once you're underneath the bros, taking them out becomes trivial - as you can just hit the block they're standing on.

The ones on the ground are still a matter of timing. Wait for the long pause between throws (happens once every 4 or 5 hammers) and run through the hammer arc. Stay between the hammer bro and his arc until the next pause (this may require moving a little with the hammer bro), and just when the next pause appears, take your chance and jump on his head. If timed correctly, he'll miss you with his last hammer, but not even get a chance to throw his next one.

As with all things, practice makes perfect. The more you tango with these creatures, the better you get at timing their throws and consistently avoiding those deadly hammers.

Where is the infinite (99) lives staircase in the original Super Mario Bros?

Question

I know there's a staircase at the end of one of the levels where a well-timed jump onto a turtle coming down a staircase will allow me to keep landing on the same shell until I max out my extra lives.

Where is it?

Answer

It appears to be at the end of stage 3-1. (source)(video)

I've unfortunately never been able to perform this trick. The potential of 99 lives does you no good if you die every time you go for it.
