Can I get my Steam categories back?

Question

During the Holiday sales, I logged in to Steam on a different computer (one powerful enough to actually run my games :). When I logged back in on my notebook, all of my categories except one were deleted, and all of the games except one were removed from my favourites and from the one remaining category. I re-added some of them.

Later, after logging in again, I lost all my groups and favourites again. Is this behaviour common? Can I get them back, or at least back them up in the future?

(I have read this, but I'm not sure it's the exact same problem. Both my computers ran Windows and I lost my categorization entirely.)

Answer

If your categories didn't sync, then you can't get them back.

What does it mean if it shows a question mark over the Steam Cloud icon?

Question

Looking at my games in List View, I noticed that it shows a question mark over some of them with whether or not they support the Steam Cloud.

The normal icon and the one with a question mark

What does this mean?

Answer

I believe the ? means that Steam isn't sure if it's synced with the Steam Cloud. When you launch the game, or if you toggle cloud support for a game, the icon turns from the "question mark" to just a cloud icon. I tested this with a couple of games in my library, and this seemed to be a pattern. I can't find any Steam FAQs on this topic, so this is more of an educated guess backed up by some research.

I presume that on launch, Steam checks in with the cloud servers to see if there's any updated information to sync, and then it "knows" that the data is properly synchronized. At other times, it's possible that it has changed since the last time Steam checked, so it shows the question mark.

How do I upload old screenshots taken with traditional methods to Steam?

Question

Steam now has a screenshot-hosting feature, but I've been unable to break the habit of hitting F5 to take traditional TGA screenshots in Team Fortress 2, rather than the new hotkey F12 (the default) to take screenshots for uploading to Steam.

There are a couple of images I'd like to upload, but as they weren't taken using the new hotkey they don't appear in Screenshot Manager. Rather, they're in the old screenshots folder, %ProgramFiles%\Steam\steamapps\[username]\team fortress 2\tf\screenshots, in the TGA format.

Is there a way I can import these screenshots to Screenshot Manager for upload to Steam's hosting service?

Answer

Unfortunately, no. There is currently no official way to upload screenshots to Steam directly.

However, there are work-arounds on the Steam forums, with varying rates of success.

I personally would suggest waiting until Steam officially releases a method to do this.
