Max Payne - Max Payne 2 Resolution / Perspective issue on a wide screen monitor

Question

So just bought Max Payne and Max Payne 2 from the Steam Sale. Is there a way to change the perspective of the game, so that it doesn't look weird on a Wide Screen monitor.

I am able to set it 1680x1050, but then everything looks Wide(fat). Is there a way to fix that, or should I stick to a 4:3 resolution and turn of scaling for my monitor/graphics card.

Answer

There's not a shred of evidence on Widescreen Gaming Forum (the definitive source for widescreen game support and fixes) that you can get an acceptable display in widescreen resolutions. The game simply stretches the image to fill your monitor, just as you described.

I would recommend sticking with your second idea of running the game pillarboxed at a 4:3 display ratio.

Can Mike the Cowboy survive Part 1 Chapter 2?

Question

When you come to Vlad's help in Part I, Chapter 2, you will meet up with Tommy the Cowboy.

In my past playthroughs this guy always died at least when the final assault took place just before getting to Vlad.

So I was wondering:

  1. Is it possible for Tommy the Cowboy to survive?
  2. If it is possible, is this recognized by the game either by character reaction or bonus?

Answer

  1. Yes, he can. He will walk up to Vladimir Lem if you succeed. But Vlad will not notice this and still only say "my hero".
  2. No bonus, but you will meet him a second time. This time as an enemy and he will taunt you through the microphone.

So in retrospect, best course of action is shooting him in the back to get his Kalashnikov ;-)
