What is this door for?

Question

I found this door, but it doesn't seem to do anything. Nothing in Glitch (thus far) has been without purpose, what's this door for?

enter image description here

Asked by fredley

Answer

That's the one-way exit from Martleby Hare, a street in Groddle Heights*, which can be accessed from Rookthills Lays with a Green-White circle key. There's a similar one-way exit for Vicar's Peak located at Mossystep in Groddle Forest.

* The wiki is wrong in stating that both Martleby and Vicar's Peak are Seam Streets. They're actually part of Groddle Heights.

What music should I play a crab to make it happy?

Question

I want to make a crab happy, what music is best for this?

Asked by fredley

Answer

Crabs keep track of all the blocks they've heard, and they will give you better bonuses for playing a block that hasn't been heard as recently. This achievement is specifically for playing the music block that the crab has heard least recently.

There's no way to know what block they have heard least recently, although it's probably a safe bet it's fairly rare. Therefore, this achievement is pretty much luck based, although you can bias it in your favor by using rare music blocks.

"GNG" and "SB-1" are the rarest blocks, as they were created by the devs as a reward (The GNG block for being a beta tester, and SB-1 for... who knows :) although there are enough of them in circulation (and enough people have them specifically for getting this achievement) that sometimes it will be a rare one of the common blocks instead. You can generally gauge how rare a block is by how much they sell for at the auction.

Can people steal my icons?

Question

I've got some icons, nicely displayed in a row in my house:

enter image description here

If I have guests over, will they be able to pick them up and take them?

Answer

As long as the icon's in your house, it's safe.

The Glitch Strategy Wiki seems to have my back:

Using the Place verb will place the icon on the ground. The icon is safe when placed in your house. When placed elsewhere, anyone can pick it up.

Together we just tested this, and no, I can't take your icons. I can take your butterfly milker (among other things left on the ground) but I can't access your storage cabinets, or disassemble your machines or the still.

Where's the best place to find lumps of earth?

Question

I need lots of earth, but it's so rare I'm having a hard time finding it. Is there a region in which it is more commonplace?

Answer

The best resource for locating resources in the game is Zog's Glitchy Tools. In addition to telling you where all the Dirt Piles are, it will also suggest the closest location to you to find some using the Glitch API.

Kajuu, for instance, is absolutely buried in dirt.

Where are the roasted pepitas?

Question

I needed some to make birch candies in order to get another recipe for my sauce pan but I couldn't find them anywhere. I ended up buying 50 from an auction because I couldn't find them in the game. So where do they come from? I thought I saw something that said they came from pumpkins, but I haven't seen any pumpkins either. Apparently they are seasonal as well, but I have been playing since before Halloween, so I don't know what season pumpkins come in except the fall season?

TL;DR Where in the game do roasted pepitas come from?

Answer

Roasted Pepitas comes from carving a Pumpkin (which gives you five) as well as smashing a carved pumpkin (which gives you an additional five).

While the Pumpkins, Pumpkin Seeds, Pepitas and the recipies stay after Zilloween, the carve verb, the Pumpkin Seeds in the Gardening Goods Vendor and the ability to plant them are only available during Zilloween. Any carved Pumpkins, unlit and lit, decompose into Pepitas and Pumpkin Pies after the event.

Zilloween is a holiday that happens every 37th of Remember every Glitch Year. Since time in Glitch passes six times as fast, and there are 308 days in every Glitch year, the event occurs every 51.3 Earth days. The period of time in which the holiday items are 'active' lasts several real world days.

As to answer the actual question, the best way to get Pepitas off season is simply to ask. Glitch is, ostensibly, a social game, and the players are generally very friendly. Asking on Global, group or even local chat will usually get you someone who is willing to trade or give you the item you need. Supply of items on auction can be finicky, and you often get overcharged for rarer items like Pepitas.

Who likes meat the best?

Question

I'm trying to get enough emblems for an idol (11). Since I have quite a pork factory at home, the easiest way for me to gain favour is with meat gifts. Is there a particular God Giant who will give me more favour in exchange for my meat or are they all the same?

Answer

No, donations to giants are rated by how much the donation is worth, not any particular preference of any given giant. The same donation will give you the same credit, regardless of where you donate it to.

I put together a system for determining how much a donation is worth, which can help you avoid going over the donation limits, called the FavorSaver. I haven't played the game since they un-launched it, but the tool is based on their API calls, so it should still be current (assuming they haven't changed any of the formulas).

There's some help text in the tool itself that goes into some amount of detail about how the system works. There's also this thread on the forums which may be of use.

How long does corn take to grow?

Question

Is it safe to plant in public lots, or do I need to get a house first? Is it different for different crops?

Answer

Corn takes six hours to grow. It does depend on what crop it is.

As far as I can tell, you've got a bit of leeway in the public gardens, but not a heap.

Is it ever worth it to sing to a butterfly?

Question

Singing to a butterfly gives you an indeterminate amount of experience points but it also costs a great deal of energy--seemingly more energy the further into the game you go. So is it ever 'worth' the energy expenditure of singing to a butterfly in order to gain experience?

It seems like it's never going to be more valuable to sing to a butterfly than just to do the regular things (like making recipes, etc.) to gain experience more slowly but with predictable energy expenditure than to gamble on butterfly singing, but I am afraid there is something in the experience I am missing since I have only done it a handful of times in 25 levels.

Answer

I think it makes more sense if you look at the third limited resource involved: real time spent playing the game.

Higher levels of Animal Kinship skill will improve the amount of experience you get from singing to a butterfly, but singing is never very efficient in terms of the ratio of energy expended to experience gained.

The main advantage of singing lies in the ratio of experience gain to real time invested. It's possible to get a decent chunk of experience in only a couple seconds on a street full of butterflies - at the expense of a lot of energy.

Since your energy refills at the start of each new game day, you can think of any unused energy at the end of a game day as "wasted". If your game-playing time is limited, singing to butterflies is a good way to quickly use up that energy and at least get some experience for it.

However, if you've got the time to burn through that energy with other, slower activities, you will get more (experience) bang for your (energy) buck.

Is there a way to search for a particular type of resource?

Question

I often need to track down a specific type of tree, rock, animal, etc. However, the zone map doesn't seem to give any indication of what resources are where. I have to either rely on my limited memory, or just wander in hopes of finding what I'm looking for.

Is there any way in game, on the site, or using some third-party tool, that I can search for a particular resource and get a map of where it can be found?

Answer

There is a pretty good site called Zog's Glitchy Tools. You can click any resource, log-in, and it will give you the closest location of that resource to your current location.

Is it possible to learn all skills in Glitch?

Question

Is it possible to learn all skills in Glitch? I haven't seen anything definitive either way, but it looks like you can.

Answer

Yes, it is currently possible to learn every skill available, and many people have. The only disadvantage to learning more skills is that there is a compounding 3% time penalty for every skill you learn above a certain limit. The limit is determined by your current level of the Better Learning Skill.

The effect of this is that learning many 'fast' skills will make the longer skills later in the tree far more difficult to learn. The current maximum penalty is over 4x the base learning time, so for skills that take days or weeks, this can be significant.

Thus, learning some skills you aren't interested now might penalize you in the future, should there be a long learning time skill that is introduced into the game later down the line. The game developers have said that they have many skills planned for release in the near future.

One of these skills is thought to be Unlearning, which will allow you to 'forget' skills that you don't have any interest in retaining. It would take a fraction of the time it takes to learn a skill in order to Unlearn it. The descriptions of the Unlearning skills are already programmed into the game, although the skills are not active and cannot currently be learned.

The Skillifier is a tool I developed to track skill times and help you prioritize, if learning time is an interest/concern:

What's the most efficient way to farm favor with a Giant?

Question

Barring quests and badges (which aren't repeatable, so can't be farmed), the only way I know to gain favor with a Giant is by donating at shrines. I'm currently churning out Sammiches as fast as I can and dumping them into Lem's shrines so that I can unlock Better Learning III, but it's slow going.

Is there a more efficient way to gain favor? The wiki page is fairly thin. If nothing else, are there crafting recipes which offer a better favor/energy ratio?

Answer

Since favor gained is related to the value of the item donated, you'll want to find high value items that are relatively easy to get. What items you use depends on your current skill set.

Many people swear by sparkly rock, which you can mine efficiently with Mining level 3 or 4. You also gain gems this way, which can be extraordinarily valuable.

If you have high Animal Kinship, it is extremely profitable to gather meat and donate that directly. Finding streets or zones with many pigs at the highest AK level can easily fill your bags with delicious and profitable meat.

Most recipes for items can't beat the cost/benefit ratio of those raw materials. If you want to craft things for donation, I think the best method is to sell your items in auctions and then use the currants to fund acquisition of items (ie, shrine powder, plus other auction house items that generally sell for less than they're worth).

If you're interested in maximizing your shrine donations, check out Zu's thread:

http://www.glitch.com/forum/general/9667/

...which is probably the authoritative source on all things shrine related.

I'll also pimp my FavorSaver tool:

What do I do with all these emblems?

Question

I already had my first emblem from Humbaba, which I'm saving up for when I need to spend it to unlock Animal Kinship 6. However today, I donated enough to earn a second. I can't auction it, and I can only Caress/Contemplate/Consider one emblem per giant per day, is it useful at all?

Answer

There are three things you can do with the 'leftover' emblems

Consider/Contemplate/Caress (CCC)

You've mentioned CCC, which is actually one of the main reasons why you might consider collecting a second set of emblems. With 11 emblems, you can obtain a fairly large amount of energy, mood and xp per day. Carrying around 11 emblems can be a bit of a pain, but it depends on much you value this source of 'free' energy and mood.

Spend it on your next skill

Emblems can be spent to reduce skill learning time. Each emblem is equivalent to 1000 favor. Primary/Secondary Giant effect will count, so it's best to keep this for AK7 if you want to do this.

Make an icon

An icon is basically an upgraded version of an emblem's CCC features. You can similarly Ruminate/Revere/Reflect for a considerably larger amount of xp, energy and mood everyday. However, icons require tithing of currents, which can get quite expensive with higher levels. An icon requires 11 emblems of the same giant to make. You can find out more at the announcement thread on the forums.

Do note that in addition to these direct uses of emblems, hitting maximum favor with a giant and obtaining its emblem will also increase the daily favor limit, which is equivalent to the amount needed to obtain the next emblem. This allows you to reduce the skill learning time more quickly, which is useful for skills with long learning time, like Mining IV and Better Learning V

Where is Gwendolyn?

Question

I am trying to get some Random Kindness, but to do that I need a Quest from Gwendolyn. However, I do not know where to find her. I know it is somewhere near Jethimadh Tower...but where exactly?

Answer

You'll need to complete the Jethimadh Tower quest. To start it:

You need to first move through a series of locked doors and rooms inside Jethimadh Tower. You will need to enter from either the North or South Street entrance. The first key should be given to you automatically when you enter the tower for the first time. The next key can be found in one of the Secrets of Jethimadh Tower locations. The most difficult part of the quest is actually finding the keys here. They respawn slowly, and if there is a large number of other players around you might not be able to find one. After that you will move through a series of rooms, using keys obtained in the previous room to open the door to the next. Spinach will be required. They can be harvested (so bring a hoe) from the first locked room in the tower. The quest for Gwendolyn will start at the point when you find a Greeterbot.

A more detailed explanation (spoilers) can be found on the Wiki. As for the quest itself,

You'll move through a series of weird (by Glitch standards!) sceneries. This stage is actually pretty easy, as everything is very linear. You will need to do a fair bit of platforming. At the end you'll meet Gwendolyn, and she will give you a Random Kindness, in addition to the usual quest rewards. The quest can be repeated for 100 currents by going back to the Greeterbot.

There is also a more mundane method for obtaining Random Kindness - by harvesting crops with Croppery II skill. If you need one (or a key) I can send it to you if you drop your username in a comment.

How do I know how many meals I've cooked with a given utensil?

Question

In Glitch there some achievements that require you to cook __ meals with a Frying Pan (for example)

How do I know how many I've chopped, fried, blended, etc?

Related: Where have I been?

Answer

Currently there is no way to tell. Potentially it might be possible for a third part script to (1) keep track of this or (2) access this info, but at this time there is none.

I appear to have died and gone to Hell. How do I get out?

Question

I forgot to eat for a while, died, and now I'm in Hell. Food turns to ash in my mouth, drink fails to quench my thirst. There's grapes around, but I can't do anything but squish them. What do I do?

Answer

You squish eleven grapes, then you come back from where you died. To squish grapes you stand near them, press ENTER, and then select "Squish".

Can I stop people kissing me all the time?

Question

People are always kissing me, and more often than not they've got garlic breath, which really gets my mood down. Is there any way of preventing people from kissing me?

Answer

You probably know this already, but those players are attempting to complete the early quest Spread the Garlic Love. There's currently no way to block these types of 'social' player to player interactions globally, and given the nature of the game I doubt there will be one any time soon.

Instead, since this is a relatively early quest, you might want to simply avoid areas where new players start, or move to less crowded areas. Other than changing your username to "Stop kissing me" I doubt there will be a better way to prevent this, so I suppose you should just take this as part of the game's humor and go along with it. The mood loss is fairly small anyway, and you won't suffer any penalty until your mood drops below the half way point.

Is smuggling bad? What could go wrong?

Question

I've just been asked to smuggle a package. Should I accept? Will bad things happen to me if I do/don't?

Answer

There are no negative consequences; it is a "mini-quest" like any other. See the Glitch Strategy page on Bureaucrats for more (if still not much) detail.

What determines how much favour I get?

Question

When donating to the giants, what is taken into account when determining the amount of favour I get for a donation? Is it anything other than monetary value of the items donated?

Answer

The amount of favor you obtain when donating is equivalent to its value listed on the item's info page divided by ten. The value seems to be rounded to the nearest whole number (.1-.4 will be rounded down, .5-.9 rounded up). This applies to all items you throw into shrine - all giants treat all items equally.

The only exception to this rule, as far as I know, is elements - even though they have no listed value, when donated they give a small amount of favor. One thousand red element for instance seem to yield 20 favor.

Using Shrine Powder will increase the value of your next donation. Fairly Hallowed Shrine Powder will double the value, while Extremely Hallowed Shrine Powder will tripe the value. To farm favor efficiently, you should gather up a large number of one type of item and donate them all under the influence of Extremely Hallowed Shrine Powder.

What does Bureaucratic Arts II do?

Question

The description is:

With the second level of Bureaucratic Arts, the ability to wrangle permits from the Bureaucrats becomes yours.

What does this actually mean?

Answer

Bureaucratic Arts II allows the player to obtain more types of permits from the Bureaucrats in Bureaucratic Halls. As of now, the only item this enables you to obtain is the General Building Permit, which is consumed in certain phases of Street Projects. However, because the game has just started, Street Projects are running under a simplified regime that does not yet require complex items such as Building Permits. tl;dr: This skill is currently useless.

It is hinted that in the future more types permits will be added. For example, in the forum post introducing Party Packs, the developers hinted that Parties will in the future require Party Permits which presumably will require BA II to obtain. There also exists the unimplemented skill Bureaucratic Arts III, which hints that the developers may expand the skill tree in this direction in the future.

Why can't I fix my TinkerTool to 100%?

Question

i have Tinkering III, but every time I try to repair it, it only goes up to 99%. Because of this I cannot complete "Tinker with your Tools" quest. How do I repair it?

Answer

Using a Tinkertool to repair a tool (even itself) causes wear to it. When repairing itself, this wear is applied after the repair, effectively capping the tool's wear at 99%.

The only way to repair a Tinkertool to 100% (say, for the quest) is to use a second Tinkertool.
