Why should I use the Item Modification Table in SWTOR?

Question

It seems that any modification you can do to a weapon on the Item Modification Table can also be done from Inventory.

Why are there so many tables and why would I want to use them?

Answer

It is a remnant from earlier item modification game mechanics Bioware was trying.

Currently the crafting table has no special purpose. You can modify an already-modifiable item by Ctrl + Right Mouse Click-ing the item in your character or inventory window. You can still use the table to start this process if you want, but you don't need to.

Can Sith use lightsabers of any other colour than red or yellow?

Question

In Star Wars the Old Republic, can a lightsaber-wielding Sith use a saber with a colour other than red or yellow?

Answer

The color of your lighsaber is dependent on your color crystal and you should be able to get any color you desire no matter if your sith or jedi.

What are the advantages/disadvantages of having a light/dark side alignment of the opposing side?

Question

In Star Wars the Old Republic, you can earn alignment points towards light side or dark side from conversation choices and other actions.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of having a high alignment in the opposing side of the force?

Answer

So far the only thing I have found that has your alignment as a requirement are the light and dark side items which are sold for Republic, in the Republic fleet. There are two shops at either end of the shopping concourse which sell light and dark items.

All of which have an alignment requirement.

Your alignment also affects your companions, just as with Kotor. For example, I play Jedi Guardian with T7 as my companion and he values honour and justice. So usually when I make a light side choice, my affinity with him goes up.

I would imagine this is the same for the other classes and sides.

What happens if my companion hates me?

Question

If I continually lose affection points with my companion, what happens? Does she run-away, drop dead, turn on me and fight to the death?

Answer

No. Your companion's Affection can not go below the initial starting value, indicating neutral.

If you're on an RP server, feel free to role play their hatred towards you by staging a fight with them yourself, then never summoning them again after you betray them and let them die in a fight you tell them to start as you run away laughing at their demise.

Otherwise, (seriously) the benefit of having high Affection with a particular companion increases their chances of crafting and mission successes, yields better quality results and opens up better gear.

What do the numbers next to your portrait in group conversations mean?

Question

When in a group and after / during the choices section of a conversation a number appears in the bottom-right of each members portrait.

Group portrait

I'm guessing that it is the roll result for what choice is used as the answer but cannot confirm. Does anyone know?

Answer

You are correct. This is how the game decide's who's conversation choice is the one to be picked.

How are PvP servers different?

Question

My guild has joined a PvP server, and I'm not really a PvP player. I'm wondering how does PvP work? Will I get ganked whilst out and about?

Will I lose all my items when I'm killed?

Answer

PvP will not cause you to lose your items.

You will get ganked whist out and about in contested areas, but generally you won't encounter those planets/star systems until around level 20.

PvP battlegrounds will also ramp up your health and damage, but in the world you won't have those enhancements so you will die a little easier in world PvP.

How is the default price of an item in GTM determined?

Question

When I try to sell an item through the Galactic Trade Market, some price is automatically assigned to the item. I can then change the price, but I think many players will keep the default one.

How is this price determined? Is it somehow based on the state of the economy on the server? Or is it a static price (maybe based on the price when selling the item to a vendor)?

Answer

It seems like the default buyout price is 450% of what a vendor will pay. Deposits vary from 22% of the vendor price (6 hours) to 68% (48 hours).

I have no evidence, but I would not imagine the price would vary.

What does the saber flash mean?

Question

I've noticed a difference in fighting with a saber since the beta, it now flashes occasionally. Anyone know what this means? I'm not sure if it's a parry/block or critical?

The flash is a bright blue, flash emanating from the saber.

Answer

Based on my experience from level 1-10, melee weapons glow strongly in their color during a critical hit. You might call it a flash.

This is very easy to observe with the Consular's starting force/melee attack.

Where do I get the T7-01 droid companion?

Question

I'm playing as a Jedi Consular, and around level 7 I noticed that some people already have the T7-01 droid companion while I'm still all by my lonesome. Did I miss something? Where do I get T7-01?

Answer

The T7-01 companion is for Jedi Knights only. So to answer your first question, it is not possible to get a T7-01 on your Jedi Consular.

As to when you'll get your first companion - keep following the main story quests, and you'll get your first companion: Qyzen Fess. It is likely that those players who already have companions are being less than thorough with completing the non-story quests, which is why you're a higher level than them.

World chests loot

Question

I notice that there are lots of chests in the world which seem to spawn all the time, like the one opposite the Jedi Temple up the hill, in the tent. They seem to have random loot in and respawn.

Can you just camp them and loot them the whole time? Or is the respawn time long to prevent this?

Answer

Yes, there are some 'safe' chests. You could camp them for some easy bucks.

However, waiting a minute (or whatever the respawn timer is) for 100 credits seems me to be a waste of time.

Questing yields the most credits and experience per time, by far. There are a lot of daily repeatable quests, so I doubt you'll run out of quests.

Melee Class - Auto run to target

Question

I'm a Jedi Knight in SWTOR and being a melee class, I find quite annoying having to run to follow my target when it's being pushed back by a party member.

Is there an option to auto run at hitting range of the current target when I cast an attack?

Answer

There is an auto run button which you can configure, as I did, to something like the thumb button on your mouse. Then you can point at a target and hit auto run, but you'll have to aim at them.

There is a follow mechanic in game but it only works on fellow player characters!

What kinds of lightsabers (and fighting methods) are available?

Question

One of the (excellent) videos for Star Wars: The Old Republic showcases a character wielding 2 lightsabers... and one of those is itself a double-bladed lightsaber, allowing for a particularly crazy-looking fighting situation with 3 blades. Is it possible to do this in the game?

More to the point, what lightsaber options are available to Force users?

Answer

Number of light sabers depends on your advanced class.

Jedi Guardian - Sith Juggernaut - 1 Lightsaber

Jedi Sentinel - Sith Marauder - 2 lightsabers

Jedi Sage - Sith Sorcerer - 1 Lightsaber

Jedi Shadow - Sith Assassin - 1 Double

So no, you cant have 3 lightsabers on the same fight.

What can I get from datacrons and where can I find them?

Question

On Tython I've found 3 datacrons so far. Two gave me a stat boost and third gave me a Blue Matrix Shard. Now I have a couple questions:

  • Is there anything else I can get from datacrons?
  • Where are they all? I don't want to miss one.

Answer

If you want to make sure you got all the datacrons on a specific planet, look at the Codex entry for that planet and then click on the magnifying glass. It shows your progress on that planet, including how many of the datacrons you have:

Codex entry for Korriban, showing I have found 2 out of three datacrons

As for the rewards from datacrons, it seems it's only stats boosts and matrix shards, but I can't say that for certain.

Crew Skills - Which are complementary?

Question

I was wondering, which of the crew skills are complementary? Like mining and smelting in WoW, which gets the components for which?

Answer

Here's a very handy link for how the crew skills relate to each other.

The bottom tier is the crafting while the top ones are the ones used to gather materials for those crafting professions:

Here's a direct link in case the image isn't large enough.

Do I get only one preorder bonus or one per character?

Question

I am wondering if the Preorder bonus (the stone thats makes you change you lightsaber color) is only once, or one for every character you create?

Also, do you get one later in the game if you didn't preorder?

Answer

Every character you create, on any server, will get all the pre-order and/or Digital Deluxe/Collector's Edition items. They come in an in-game mail as soon as you create the new character.

So don't worry about using them; each character gets their own copies. :)

You can purchase with in-game credits several of these items without buying those packages, if you get a security key (hardware or software versions). But not all of them. Some are exclusive.

Also, Bioware does allow you to later buy the Digital Deluxe/Collector's Edition later, and add those keys on to your existing account which will give you access (plus the 1 free month of play) on top of whatever you already have.

What is the difference between armor and rating?

Question

The description of every armor in the game says something like “97 Armor (Rating 54)”. The first part is clear, when I equip this armor, my (confusingly named) Armor Rating increases by that much. But what exactly does Rating mean?

My character sheet

Answer

Rating is the quality of the item (explained here under item rating)

Equippable items have a rating indicating their general level of quality. This number gives you a rough idea of how powerful the viewed item is compared to other items you’re wearing. To raise the rating, look for certain modification items that can increase these ratings, and attach them to your equipment.

How do Matrix Shards work and where can I find them?

Question

On Tython I found a datacron containing a Blue Matrix Shard. I was told that I could combine them in some sort of combiner on Coruscant. Which leads to a couple important questions:

  • How do they work? I.e., what can I make and how many do I need?
  • Can I get them anywhere else besides datacrons?
  • Where are they all? I don't want to miss one.

(I think this info is best in one question/answer, but let me know if it should be split.)

Answer

Three shards can be combined using an Assembler to form a Matrix Cube; the cubes are then used in your character's Relics slots. There found on all the planets and only in datacrons.

As far as the number, there are around 65 (98% sure) datacrons. However, there are a limited number of shards to be found (3 red, 3 yellow, 3 blue, 2 green--98% sure, again).

Here's a video walkthrough with more details on how to use them:

!

This is the most comprehensive guide I could find on the locations of the datacrons (including those with shards):

When do I get my first companion?

Question

I know you can get a companion in Star Wars: The Old Republic, but when do you get said companion?

Answer

This varies from class to class, but you should get your first companion as part of the storyline missions in your beginner zone. You'll be in the range of level 5-10.

Are all trainers the same?

Question

On Tython I've encountered two trainers, and the second didn't have any new moves to offer me. Do all trainers teach the same moves? Or do I need to seek them all out at the right levels in order to learn everything?

Answer

All the trainers (that are appropriate for your class) will teach you the same skills. In the top right (if I remember correctly) of the training menu you can choose to display the skills you haven't learned yet or don't have the level requirements to learn yet.

All the trainers teach you the same basic skills. IE. All Sith Inquisitor trainers will be able to teach you force lightning at level 2. Multiple trainers are scattered out to make it easier to get your skills when you level up.

What are the best practices in theory crafting around generating an optimal spell/ability rotation in an MMO?

Question

When SWTOR rolls out, I'd like to have a firm grip on how to approach the theory crafting of working out my DPS rotation during encounters.

How do I determine and model things like spell coefficients, management of cool downs, haste, and buff procs?

In the past, I've simply consumed data produced by sites like elitistjerks, but I've really never had a handle on HOW they approach modeling these issues.

Answer

The basic formula is: DPCT = average_damage * modifiers / effective_casting_time. (DPCT = Damage Per Cast Time)

average damage usually is easy: (min + max) / 2. min and max are given in the abiliity description. For dots (damage over time effects), sum all the damage it will do during its lifetime.

effective casting time frequently is easy as well: just read the ability description, and subtract bonusses from talent trees.

modifiers usually are the hard part. The descriptions of modifiers might be clear, but it seldomly is clear whether they are additive or multiplicative when combined.

And even if the description from the game is clear, it might be wrong. Tooltips are not always updated the same patch as the code that does the calculations. As SWTOR recently has had a beta with lots of balancing changes, it's a safe bet that some tooltips will be wrong!

Let me give an example: if two effects each increase damage by 10%, the combination could be 10% + 10% = 20% (additive) or 1.1*1.1 = 1.21 = 21% (multiplicative).

Not much of a difference, but elitistjerks will want to be as exact as possible. This is where things get time consuming: use the ability 1000 times, parse the combat log, and see whether it is closer to 20% or 21% on average. A basic knowledge of statistics might be required to know when you've parsed enough log files.

A quicker trick might be to observe the maximum possible. If the maximum hit is e.g. 100, and there are two 10% increasing effects active, a hit of 121 is a clear indication that the modifiers are multiplicative. If you are able to rule out other causes (other modifying effects, crits, level difference with target, ...).

It gets even harder when effects are coupled: e.g. a very good ability with a cooldown of 12 seconds, but only usuable when another effect with a chance of 25% to happen is active. One cannot assume that this ability will be used every 12 seconds, as that other effect might not be active when the cooldown is finished.

In those cases, it might be easier to simulate a combat. Repeat the simulation many times and take the average. Again: a basic knowledge of statistics might be required to know how many times the simulation should be repeated.

Those are the basics.

For more details, just read the elitistjerks posts. WoW is a complicated games, and has many effects, both multiplicative and additive, so formulas can appear to be complicated. However, the basics are still the same.

Once you grasp each and every detail of the simulations, and as a proof have written some simulations yourself, you might consider to change your job :). Those skills are highly wanted by e.g. banks and insurance companies...
