How do the 3DS and N64 Ocarina of Time releases compare in content?

Question

Does the 3DS version of Ocarina of Time have more or less content than the original Nintendo 64 version?

Asked by KatieK

Answer

Compared to the N64 original, a little over double. The reason for this being the inclusion of the Master Quest, which was not originally available on the N64 version. Although it was released later as part of a special promotion. The world is mirrored in the 3DS version of Master Quest, but everything else is the same as the previously released version.

The only content which is 100% new is the boss challenge mode.

How do I create folders?

Question

I just got the new 3DS firmware update, and I know that it gives me the ability to create folders on my home screen (according to various blogs). However, I can't figure out how to make the folders.

I tried dragging one icon over another like you do on an iPhone/iPad to create a folder but that didn't work. I also tried looking at various system options with no success.

What am I missing? How do I create folders?

Asked by Derpy Hooves

Answer

You are correct Derpy. Nintendo gave us folders and named ones at that with the capacity for up to 60 items and at the same time also gave devs the ability to push updates. Apparently nobody put up any official info about how to create folders yet so I'll just describe my experience in doing so (note that wherever I tap an icon/folder in the home screen, you can usually do the same by navigating to it with the D-pad and pressing A):

I haven't played my 3ds much lately, let alone update firmware although I did an update about 18 hours ago for the heck of it and folders weren't there yet. Upon reading your question, I:

Ensured the 3DS has the Latest Firmware Update:

  1. powered on my 3DS,
  2. double-tapped on System Settings (you can alternatively tap Open),
  3. tapped Other Settings,
  4. tapped the right arrow three times,
  5. tapped System Update,
  6. tapped OK in the lower-right,
  7. tapped I Accept in the lower-right,
  8. waited until it was done its thing and tapped OK to restarting.

I went through updating a second time, but it said I was up to date.

Then I figured out

How to Create a Folder:

As aro19 and Krazer suggested, to create a folder, you must:

  1. tap an empty slot on the home screen (The SD card icon may look like an empty slot, but it isn't),
  2. tap Create Folder on the bottom of the screen.

and there was a new folder. I did this again as I wrote this to document the process. The folders created will be named # (New Folder) which will increment and apparently deleting a folder will not reallocate the number for folder auto-naming (likely until it reaches the cap and then loops around).

You cannot create a folder within a folder.

Now that I had multiple empty folders I tried out folder management.

How to Use Folders:

Like the rest of the home screen icon management, it's pretty simple:

  1. Drag an icon onto a folder to add it to the folder.
  2. Tap a selected folder to view its contents or use Open in the lower-left.
  3. Drag icons within the folder content window to swap their positions.
  4. Drag an icon out of the folder content window and onto a space on the home screen to remove it from the folder.
  5. Tap the right and left arrows or use the D-pad navigation to change screens to the left or right just as you would on the home screen.
  6. The size of icons can be changes just as they would be in the home screen by using the buttons in the top-left corner of the screen.
  7. Tap the curved arrow on the folder content window to close the folder content window.

How to Rename a Folder:

Folders will display the first character of their name as their icon.

  1. On the home screen, tap the folder you want to rid yourself of,
  2. tap Settings in the lower-left,
  3. tap Rename on the upper half of the menu,
  4. enter a new name on the text input screen,
  5. and tap OK on the lower-right to accept the new name.

How to Delete a Folder:

Folders containing anything cannot be deleted.

  1. On the home screen, tap the folder you want to rid yourself of,
  2. tap Settings in the lower-left,
  3. tap Delete on the lower half of the menu,
  4. and tap OK on the lower-right and your folder will be gone.

Is there a way to get DS games to use the full top screen on a 3DS?

Question

I noticed that when I play DS games on my 3DS, the games don't fill the entirety of the top screen on the 3DS - there are black bars on either side of the image.

Is there a way to get the game to fill the entire screen? Or is that just going to make things look terrible?

Asked by Derpy Hooves

Answer

There appears to be two modes for playing DS games on the 3DS. If you hold Select+Start while the DS game is loading, it will display in it's "Native Resolution" on the 3DS screens.

Unfortunately, this is going to make the black bars bigger and not smaller. As far as I can tell, this is the only other display mode that the 3DS supports when playing DS games.

It has to do with the different resolutions/aspect ratios of the DS and the 3DS. Similar things happened when playing GB games on the GBA.

What's the correct timing for the the starting turbo boost?

Question

In previous Mario Karts, I haven't had any trouble getting the turbo boost at the beginning of the race. But I can't seem to figure it out in Mario Kart 7 - how do I time the gas to get the starting boost?

Asked by KatieK

Answer

To initiate a turbo at the start of the race, hold down the acceleration button right when the number "2" appears, or just a little after it appears.

Is the 3DS version of “Link's Awakening” identical to the original?

Question

I've heard numerous interviews with Miyamoto stating that he'd love to see Link to the Past on the 3DS with 3D. As well it's my understanding that a few games on the 3DS Virtual Console (Excitebike?) have 3D added into them.

So my question is, is there 3D in the 3DS version of Link's Awakening? As well, anything at all different with this version over the DX or GB versions?

Asked by Jeff

Answer

It is a port of the DX version. It is not 3D whatsoever. It does include the Color Dungeon found in the DX version, and is in colour.

Has Nintendo announced whether the 3DS will get downloadable GBA titles? [closed]

Question

I want to go back to playing some old Gameboy Advance games and I'm wondering if Nintendo has made any official announcements regarding plans to make classic GBA titles available on the 3DS online store.

If so, is there a tentative list?

Asked by soulstriderx

Answer

Nintendo hasn't announced any plans to support Game Boy Advance emulation outside of the currently available titles for ambassadors. However, the same was true for the ambassador NES games, until they started appearing in the eShop.

Following that logic, although Nintendo has not announced anything, if they do, you can expect the first games to be:

  • Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones
  • F-Zero Maximum Velocity
  • Kirby & The Amazing Mirror
  • Mario Kart: Super Circuit
  • Mario vs. Donkey Kong
  • Metroid Fusion
  • The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap
  • Wario Land 4
  • WarioWare, Inc.: Minigame Mania
  • Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3

The GBA emulator used for the ambassador games is currently poor. It doesn't support sleep or restore points, and it probably doesn't handle any per-title quirks beyond those needed for the ten ambassador titles released so far. The NES emulator used by the early ambassador releases also had issues, and those were fixed (and available as updates) before the NES titles appeared in the eShop. The earliest sign of Nintendo doing a general release of emulated GBA games is probably going to be the same - updates to the existing ambassador titles.

Does the e-shop version of Link's Awakening have the Color Dungeon?

Question

The first time I played Link's Awakening, I played the DX version for Game Boy Color, which had the "Color Dungeon", which awards you with a choice of one of two different stat-boosting tunics if you finish it.

Does the version of Link's Awakening that you can get on the Nintendo e-Shop have this dungeon?

Asked by Ashley Nunn

Answer

According to this, yes indeed!

Can I remove the game listing without removing the game?

Question

I want to remove some of the games that appear on my Home screen - the ones I don't play very often, like Face Raiders, for example.

I don't want to take them out of the system completely, because sometimes they are neat to play (or to show other people how the AR works, for Face Raiders). I know I can do that by going to System Settings, then to Data Management, and then from there choosing what I want to remove.

I also would like to avoid "hiding them" by moving them to the last few slots, if at all possible.

What if I just want to "hide" them from the Home screen? Is that possible?

Asked by Ashley Nunn

Answer

It's not possible to remove or hide the built-in software like Face Raiders or Safety Warning at all.

3DSWare can be deleted, but not hidden. If you delete it, you'll have to re-download it.

For DSiWare, you can move it to your SD card. This will require you to copy it back off the SD card when you want to play it or show it to someone, but you'll at least not have to re-download it.

Is there any reward for completing the Pokemon Pokedex 3D app?

Question

I was just curious, someone had posted that as a prize for completing either the Pokedex or sticker collection (I don't recall which), you would get a Pikachu added. Is this true? I'm still 7 away myself, I havn't been able to find anyone local to fill in the monkeys and deer I'm missing :/

Asked by Kit

Answer

Pikachu isn't actually in the Pokedex 3D - Pokedex 3D only uses the new fifth gen Pokemon (Black and White) - there is a persistent rumor about getting Pikachu for filling your Pokedex, but this is nothing more than a rumor.

There are various lists online of all the available Pokemon (like this one from Serebii), and you can also unlock the ability to view more Pokemon with the AR viewer at once:

200 stickers allow 10 Pokémon to be viewed with the AR viewer at once. 250 stickers allow 11 Pokémon to be viewed with the AR viewer at once. 328 stickers allow 12 Pokémon to be viewed with the AR viewer at once.

Other than that, though, there isn't anything else to unlock, and there is definitely no Pikachu. There might be, if Nintendo decides to update the application in the future to include more "classic" Pokemon from previous generation games, but for now, no, this is nothing more than rumor.

What will I miss if I only play with cats?

Question

In Nintendogs+Cats, it seems like cats/kittens are only an add-on to the main game of dogs/puppies. But if I only want to play with cats, how much of the game will I miss out on? Can I take cats on walks?

Asked by KatieK

Answer

You must first adopt a puppy before you can adopt any kittens. Kittens cannot walk or participate in competitions.

If let loose in your room they may find surprising treats, but without money coming in from walks and competitions, you might find yourself low on money. This would limit the amount of toys and other purchases you could make in game.

How are Streetpass puzzle panels distributed in Europe / Australia?

Question

In the United States, Streetpass puzzle panels appear to be distributed by state. That is, each state gets a particular puzzle, and to find other puzzles, you need to streetpass with people in other states. It tied to your initial region selection, so unless you reformat the 3DS's system memory, you will always get the same initial panel.

Does anyone know how the puzzles are distributed in Europe? Is it broken down by country, or is (hopefully) more granular than that? My wife and I both live in Berlin, and we've now both completed the Mario, Luigi, and Bowser panel.

Asked by Joe Wreschnig

Answer

With Nintendo's revamp of the Streetpass Puzzle system this question is irrelevant as-written, and the new way they're distributed is more transparent.

Different countries, and different regions in larger countries, still get different puzzles. These regions are identified in Streetpass Mii Plaza's map feature. On top of that there are special pieces you can't buy in particular regions at all and must Streetpass someone from another region to get; these are indicated by purple squares.

With the new system, new puzzles can also be distributed by Spotpass.

What are Special Miis?

Question

I was looking at the list of StreetPass accomplishments and noticed there are a few accomplishments that require you to StreetPass with Special Miis.

What are Special Miis? What makes them special? How do I find them?

Answer

Special Miis are Miis created for official promotions. Some are official game character Miis. For example, Capcom created Resident Evil: Revelations for Jill, Chris, Parker, and Jessica. Others, the kind StreetPass Mii Plaza gives achievements for, are gotten by StreetPassing special demo kiosks or Nintendo employees.

Special Miis are identifiable via their golden pants. You can't share QR codes for them, and apparently you cannot send them directly to someone else without losing them from your own plaza.

If you're trying to get that achievement, your best bet is to go to events like Gamescom, Tokyo Game Show, or PAX.

(Special Miis are not new to the 3DS; the Wii also had them, but they were much less used given the poor state of WiiConnect24 outside of Japan.)

3DS Street Pass Not Working

Question

Lately the Street Pass feature of the 3DS has not been working for me. A coworker and I will both have our 3DSs, at work, next to each other, with the wifi on and street pass never connects. Sometimes turning the wifi on and off will cause it to connect properly.

Anyone know if there are any better solutions? I'm worried I'm missing random street passes out there because most of the time it requires me to toggle the wifi.

Answer

I just wanted to add aside from the correct answer from Joe, I too have been having issues with the street pass function not working 100% of the time. When I first received my 3ds I would go over to my brothers house and it would instantly light up, but tonight when I went over it took a while and a little fiddling with to react. My honest opinion would be that it is still working out the little bugs and most likely be honed to perfect with a ninja update. Still a lot of features for this system to pop up.

My advice would be to just set the two down next to each other and let them sort it out.

Also, 100% correct on the "cooldown" for the data swapping, 8-10 hours. Although I haven't tried getting one swap, going out to get a different one, and then trying to swap again. That might be worth an experiment. Maybe you can't get the same data unless you get different data.. following me? Alright I'll go crazy professor laugh over here by myself.

Hope this helps.

What are all the hats I need to unlock Find Mii 2?

Question

I know that to unlock Find Mii 2 you need to get all the hats from the original Find Mii.

As listed by IGN, the hats from the first playthrough of Find Mii are

Extra Super Mario 3D Land saved games

Question

Is there any way to have more than 3 saved games in Super Mario 3D Land? My wife and kids have claimed all three saved game slots, and I'd like to play sometime...

The 3DS has an SD card, so it seems like it ought to have lots of storage, but I don't see any way to use it.

Answer

Unfortunately, Super Mario 3D Land does not support any more than 3 save slots. The SD card does hold save data for many games, but you cannot add to save slots or anything like that.

Transferring Apps/Games from one 3DS to another

Question

Here is my situation:

I recently got a 3DS which has games/apps from the e-Shop. This new 3DS seems to be having some issues so I am planning on returning it for a new one but I want to keep the games/apps.

Will it be possible to put the bought apps/games on to my new 3DS?

Answer

It is possible - with the newest software update (version Version 3.0.0-6U), you can transfer software, sounds, and images from one 3DS to another using the System Transfer found in the System Settings menu. However, if you no longer have access to the Nintendo 3DS, the transfer cannot be completed. It is all transferred using local wireless communication, which means you need both your old 3DS and your new one to do this transfer.

From Nintendo's support page:

For the most part, information on the target system (system being transferred to) will be overwritten by the information on the source system (system being transferred from). See below for specific details, or click here for more information:

  • All content downloaded via the eShop on both systems (DSiWare, Ambassador games and status, 3DS Downloadable software, etc) will be combined together onto the target system. After the transfer is complete, titles will be available to re-download from the Nintendo eShop.
  • Any game data that is duplicated on both systems is overwritten by the data on the source system.
  • The eShop balance from both systems is combined together. (Total amount cannot exceed $200 or the transfer will be canceled.)
  • Data associated with any pre-installed software or applications (Face Raiders, Streetpass Mii Plaza, etc). Only the data associated with the source system is retained.
  • Photos, Videos, and Sound files. Any photo and sound files that exist on the target system’s internal memory will be overwritten. However, photo and sound files saved to the target system’s SD Card are still retained.
  • System Settings from the source system (Parental Controls, Internet settings, etc)
  • Save data associated to DSiWare and Nintendo 3DS Downloads
  • The WFC ID associated to DS online games.

Where is the microphone located?

Question

I know the 3DS has a built in microphone somewhere, because I need to blow into it as part of a Cooking Mama 4 minigame. However. I have no idea where it is, so I just generally blow at the bottom edge of the 3DS.

I keep failing the minigame, most likely because I am blowing in the wrong spot.

Where is the microphone located, so I can blow in the right spot and get past this mini-game (because I don't like it when Mama is mad at me)?

Answer

It's that little hole under the Start button.

How can I sleep DS games on the 3DS?

Question

On the DS, you could close it mid-play and pick up where you left off (Sleep Mode). You can also do this on the 3DS, but I have found that some DS games won't sleep properly when played on the 3DS (Yoshi's Island DS comes to mind).

Is there a way to make sure games enter sleep mode? I was a little disappointed to be quite a ways through a level, then I put my 3DS in sleep mode, and when I cam back 20 minutes later, the 3DS took me to the Home Screen instead of my game.

Answer

I don't know if this is the specific problem you're having, but there's apparently some hardware weirdness when the 3DS is in sleep mode, possibly related to sleep mode with DS games. Exposure to magnetic fields might be part of the problem. For instance, putting a 3DS on top of a DS Lite (which has magnets in the speakers in the lid) can sometimes cause this issue:
