What item's effects or heroes' skills goes through Black King Bar?

Question

Someone told me that Bane's ulti goes through Black King Bar. Are there other item effects or hero skills that goes thorough it and that can be use to counter heroes that heavily relies on this item?

Asked by Drake

Answer

Noteworthy disables and interrupts that go through magic immunity from various heroes (all ultimates):

  • Bane
  • Beastmaster
  • Batrider
  • Pudge
  • Silencer
  • Clockwerk
  • Faceless Void
  • Enigma
  • Vengeful Spirit

Other ultimates that are primarily used for their damage still stun or ministun (but won't damage) magic immune opponents, useful for enemies who are trying to BKB and use a TP Scroll to escape.

  • Necrolyte
  • Anti-Mage
  • Lich
  • Juggernaut (Will still damage, as it deals physical damage.)
  • Sniper's Assassinate

The only non-ultimate I can recall that disables through a BKB is Axe's Call.

Abilities/Items that grant vision

Question

Referring to my previous question and its comments, I want to know which abilities/spells/items supplement hero vision at night, day and both combined?

Asked by Ashwin Ganesh

Answer

This should be pretty much everything, I tested the few that I wasn't sure on but I probably hit most.

Spells that provide temporary flying vision:

  • Tiny's Toss
  • Kunkka's Torrent
  • Night Stalker's Darkness (with Aghanim's Scepter)
  • Razor's Static Link
  • Batrider's Firefly
  • Dark Seer's Wall of Replica

Spells that give vision as they traverse/land:

  • Clockwerk's Rocket
  • Juggernaut's Omnislash
  • Mirana's Sacred Arrow
  • Vengeful Spirit's Wave of Terror
  • Razor's Plasma Field (unique in that it only grants vision of units, not the area)
  • Weaver's The Swarm
  • Crystal Maiden's Nova
  • Puck's Illusory Orb
  • Storm Spirit's Static Remnant
  • Windrunner's Powershot
  • Zeus's Lightning Bolt (Grants Truesight)
  • Shadow Shaman's Mass Serpent Wards
  • Jakiro's Ice Blast
  • Witch Doctor's Death Ward
  • Death Prophet's Exorcism
  • Pugna's Nether Ward
  • Dazzle's Weave
  • Batrider's Flamebreak
  • Ancient Apparition's Ice Vortex
  • Ancient Apparition's Ice Blast
  • Invoker's Sun Strike
  • Invoker's Tornado
  • Invoker's Deafening Blast
  • Bane's Fiend's Grip
  • Shadow Demon's Shadow Poison

  • Wildkin's Cyclone (neutral creep)

Spells that give vision of affected targets:

  • Slardar's Amplify Damage (Grants Truesight)
  • Lifestealer's Infest
  • Spiritbreaker's Charge of Darkness (Grants Truesight)
  • Bounty Hunter's Track (Grants Truesight)
  • Bloodseeker's Thirst (Grants Truesight)
  • Razor's Static Link
  • Spectre's Haunt
  • Zeus's Thundergod's Wrath

Items that provide vision:

  • Observer Wards
  • Sentry Wards (Grants Truesight)

I've ignored summons as all summons will of course grant vision, and I've ignored spells that move you along with them, as it's you providing the vision, not the spell. As you can see, most support heroes have a spell that provides vision of an area. This is to allow them to counterward more easily.

What game is better for a more daily player, League of Legends (LoL) or Defense of the Ancients (DotA) or DotA2? [closed]

Question

I've played quite a number of MOBA (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena) games before and I play games almost every day for extended periods of time. Which of these two games is more oriented and more rewarding for more "hardcore" gamers?

Also, which is better between DotA and DotA2? Should I stick with DotA because it's already complete and everything or should I go with DotA2 before it's finished? Is DotA2 buggy right now at all?

Asked by Aceofgods

Answer

League of legends is a more casual of a game but still has a very competitive scene as for dota and dota 2 i always found that to be more of a serious tryhard every game kind of a moba.

Which Hero has the largest vision?

Question

In Dota 1&2, Which heros have the largest vision at :

  1. Night
  2. Day
  3. Both Combined
Asked by Ashwin Ganesh

Answer

  1. Night Stalker and Enchantress both have 1800 night vision. Here's a sortable complete list of Hero Stats I put together a while ago that has a list of everyone's Night Vision in Dota2. In DotA, Meepo and Slark also both have 1800 night vision.

  2. Night Stalker is an exception in that he is the only hero who does NOT see 1800 during the day, seeing only 1200.

  3. Enchantress is the only hero in Dota2 right now that has full vision (1800) during both the day and night. In original DotA, Meepo and Slark share this combined 3600 vision.

What are the differences between Defense of the Ancients (DotA) and League of Legends (LoL)?

Question

Speaking about gameplay only, what are all the differences between Defense of the Ancients (DotA) and League of Legends (LoL)?

Asked by Drake

Answer

First of all, there is an official page about differences between DotA and LoL, from Riot themselves: http://www.leagueoflegends.com/learn/dota_and_lol

Some of the most noticeable changes that pertain to League of Legends:

  • Champion selection is limited to the "free to play" champions (which are rotated on a weekly basis) or the ones you have purchased using in game points (Influence points) or real life money (converted into Riot points).
  • Maximum level is 18. With the exception of (as of writing this) 2 champions, Udyr and Karma, this gives your Q, W, and E skills 5 levels, and your R ultimate 3 levels. For Udyr, as he has no true ult, but rather 4 basic skills, you could have a 5 5 5 3 setup, or a 5 5 4 4 setup, or any combination therein. For Karma, her ult is given at level 1 and never levels up, giving her Q, W and E skills 6 levels each.
  • No denying. This includes towers as well as creeps/minions. You can still deny by keeping enemy champions out of the kill radius / prevent them from last hitting, but there is no "auto-attack your own minions" to deny.
  • No gold loss on death.
  • Towers hit a lot harder and do more damage to you the longer they've been hitting you, making early tower dives a lot riskier and making towers much safer to defend against.
  • You can kill the enemy base/nexus without having to kill the 3 inner lane turrets. You still must kill the 2 nexus towers first, however.
  • The ranged/melee barracks have been merged into a single building called an inhibitor, and instead of bolstering the melee/ranged minions in that lane when destroyed, it instead makes a single, powerful melee unit spawn with every wave. Inhibitors respawn over time.
  • There are far fewer "active" items (click to use) and the focus is more on increasing your passive stats.
  • Every champion has a passive ability that is somewhat integral to their playstyle or their character flavor. These passives are always active and require no skill points. For example, the champion Zilean increases all allies' experience gain by 8% always. A more active example would be the character LeBlanc, who spawns a mirror image whenever she drops below 40% HP (occuring at most once per minute).
  • There is a 3v3 as well as a 5v5 map, meaning there are two separate meta-games to identify (though most people play 5v5).
  • Some of the larger neutral creeps provide passive buffs that provide a visual effect as well as a bonus to attributes. For example, the Golem buff provides mana/energy regeneration and cool down reduction.
  • There is a large neutral creep called the dragon that provides teamwide gold and experience. This is often contested through the mid-late game and is a prime target for jungler champions to kill.
  • The "boss" neutral creep (Baron Nashtor) does not provide an item (like Token of Life), but rather teamwide gold/exp and a passive buff that greatly increases health/mana/energy regen as well as additional attack damage and ability power.
  • You get to choose 2 additional "Summoner Abilities" that are universal regardless of what champion you pick. Some examples of these are Ghost (temporary speed boost and unitwalking), Flash (short range teleport), Ignite (scaling damage with a DoT and reduced healing/regen component), and Clairvoyance (short cooldown, small radius map reveal). There are others too, of course.
  • No river runes.
  • You may passively increase your champions' stats by purchasing "Runes" outside of the actual in-game interface. These runes are purchased using points you earn by playing games (winning or losing).
  • Additionally, you may increase your champions stats / enhance your "Summoner Abilities" / provide passive effects through the mastery system. The mastery system is a simplified version of a talent tree (akin to Diablo 2, World of Warcraft, etc.) with points being earned as you level your summoner (your account), which is done by simply playing games.
  • Ability to return to base (free, no need to buy it, no item slot taken, no cooldown)
  • Improved juking - instead of sneaky paths between trees there is "brush" (bushes/grass) system - brush blocks line of sight of those outside it and provides bonuses to some champions/heroes
  • Map is symmetrical with the exception of the placement of the Dragon and Baron "boss" creeps.
  • Shields system - damage shields are dynamically displayed as a gray extension of the healthbars. Purple extensions indicate magic-only shields.
  • It's possible to bind smartcasts (cast instantly on keypress on the area the cursor is hovering over, not on an additional mouse click)
  • No secret shops or outposts. All items are purchased at the base shop.
  • The Shop's combination items are displayed in a tree, making it easy to see which items combine into what.

I'll add more as I think of more. Hope this is a good start for you!

Not-So-Squishy Slark

Question

Slark being a squishy hero is a known fact. Standing 1v1 against him is quite hard. Even at low levels. I can't be teaming up all the time just to kill him.

The following are my rather defensive approaches

  1. Tower hugging - saves me with very low HP

  2. Hex/stun and run

  3. Blade mail and assault - potent but he heals and comes back fast.

  4. Force staff myself.

Any counter heros or offensive strategies particularly for 1v1?

Asked by Ashwin Ganesh

Answer

To begin with, early game Slark is essentially about as menacing as a paper napkin. Slark needs a pretty decent baby sitter to survive early game without heavy harassment. After Slark gets to level 6 things get trickier, but the fact remains that Slark has no survivability when faced with nukes.

So the effective counter heroes will deal heavy amounts of burst damage and essentially kill Slark before he has time to fully finish his combination of death pact, shadow dance, and leech enough stat points through essence shift.

While you may not always be able to team up to kill a hero, it is still recommended to try to wrangle at least 1 other teammate to assist. But given your criteria, and whether with support or without you will need to provide truesight. So wards, or dust if you intend on going 1 on 1.

Heroes

Lina - unloading the early/mid game combination of her light strike array, dragon slave, and laguna blade

Bane Elemental - brain sap, fiend's grip, follow up with another brain sap - items to get in the mean time, necronomicon so that the minions can pound away while you disable

Leshrac - between diabolic edict and pulse nova Slark will have a pretty hard time standing directly next to you or even using pounce. On the off chance you are pounced on split earth should be like shooting fish in a barrel to land. And you still have lightning storm to cast.

Nerubian Assassin - mana burn, impale, vendetta, attack, repeat whichever skill is done it's cooldown.

Items

  • observer wards
  • sentry wards
  • gem of true sight (situational)
  • necronomicon - (upgrade this) minions for added dps and on-demand true sight
  • blademail - synergy counter as essence shift and damage incoming is redirected
  • ghost scepter - disable Slark
  • eul's scepter - disable Slark
  • force staff - to break pounce link
  • blink dagger - to break pounce link

Counter for sacred warrior 1V1

Question

Ok heres the scenario, Huskarr with burning spear in auto cast rushes at me with his ulti. My hp reduces to half of what it was, with his damage constantly increasing with berserker's blood (and me attacking him back and reducing his HP) and my hp reducing because of the burning spear, i die (in some cases i am left with a two digit HP, after killing him but i die anyway because others would have caught me by then). Who is the best counter for sacred in 1v1 situations like this?

Answer

To counter the specific situation you have described there are two possibilities: to escape alive, or to kill him outright. In my opinion, trying to go one-on-one with Huskar is almost always ill-advised due to his skill set. So I have broken this up with heroes that can reasonably escape while still damaging Huskar to a degree and lastly a hard counter.

Heroes

Windrunner - using the windrunner ability, depending on level, you have from 3-5 seconds of 100% evasion, 50% increased move speed, and a small area of effect slow around your hero. While this skill can usually be advised for aggressive engagement usage, as an escape, it is ideal to run from Huskar. Shackleshot is also a solid escape tool depending on your ability to position yourself and predict the enemy's movement.

Mirana - even while being attacked, with a few steps back arrow and starfall should be relatively easy to land for either a small stun (if early levels) or a large amount of nuke damage (later levels). Huskar's skills are all based around losing health and gaining bonus damage so burst damage is your friend here. In an ideal situation you would have teammates that could follow-up with finishing the kill, but most likely you can turn at this point and leap toward safety. Leap is also a pretty solid counter to Huskar's ultimate, Life Break. Where Life Break was suppose to slow for 5 seconds, after leap you will gain some move speed back due to the leap move speed bonus.

Anti-Mage - dive in to add a few attack swipes before using blink to escape in any direction, blinking in a direction other than straight back will help as it is less expected.

Void - similar tactic to Anti-Mage, but using Timewalk instead and with the added perk of Chronosphere to either give you more time to attack or get away.

[Hard Counter] Spectre - With desoloate adding damage since you are one on one, and dispersion soaking up anywhere between 10-22% of damage dealt to you, the only large variable here is whether your items are farmed yet.

Items

Force staff - push yourself in some direction away from attack.

Eul's Scepter - use on Huskar if you are alone and need to run or on yourself to allow teammates to focus down Huskar and you can rejoin a few seconds later either to use nukes that were on cd or hopefully persue a now heavily injured Huskar.

Sheep-stick - polymorph/hex as a counter for any carry, for the most part.

Ghost Scepter - you can still be attacked through manually casting of Huskar's orb, but this will be far far slower than if he was auto-attacking with his berserker blood buff.

DotA: placing mines by Goblin Techies

Question

I am interested in some good strategies of playing by Techies. Mostly, what is the most profitable place for placing mines in the game beginning ? Such places as near the top/bottom shops work rarely because it's the first place where the opponents do NOT send their heroes having techies in opposite team. Also I wonder when it's the best time to leave the line and start patrolling over the map and mining. I understand that it of course depends on the concrete game and heroes pick, but I'm interested in opinion of experiences players.
Thanks in advance.

Answer

First of all, you are right, most players are aware that you will most probably place bombs on the shop area so they are carefull. However, early game, while lanning, you can notice that your creeps will go only on one half of your lane(left side on bot lane and right side of top lane). So it's a pretty good idea to place your mines anywhere in the lane on the side which is not crossed by creeps. However, you should be very carefull because by attacking an enemy hero you will provoke enemy creeps to come to you and attack you and therefore they will get outside their normal lane track. If you keep this in mind, this is a pretty good strategy to start with. Classic spots like runes will however get you a kill if the enemy player isn't cautious. If the enemy team starts buying sentry wards or gems, you might consider yourself useless. Even so, it is not the case. Use ramp fog to your advantage. Place your mines on the upper part of any cliff. This way when the enemy comes even if it has a gem in his inventory he won't be able to see the bombs because of the fog. If they also have the map filled with observer wards, then you are pretty much screwed. In this case your only option would be a force staff. But if you want to play a good all around game, you should definately go for aghanim. On lvl 16 with aghanim the damage output of a single remote bomb is just outrageous. In team fights just place bomb and instant detonate. If the opposing team has a few agi/int or non-tank heroes, I am telling you: "They WILL fear you!". I hope you find this helpfull. If you have any more questions or just need general advice with anything dota related feel free to ask .

What are the differences between Defense of the Ancients (DotA) and Heroes of Newerth (HoN)?

Question

Some days ago I asked about the differences between LoL and DotA.

Now, in order to have a clear view of all actors in the so called "DotA Wars", I would like to understand in detail what are the differences between Heroes of Newerth and Defense of the Ancients, concerning the gameplay only.

Answer

So unlike League of Legends, Heroes of Newerth wasn't just designed to feel like DotA, but to actually be DotA. From Heroes, to items, right down to the default map, it is very much a DotA clone... and S2 was really OK with this. So if you're looking for a gameplay difference, then they're few and far between.

  • There are 22 "new" Heroes, many of whom share only an ability or two with DotA heroes
  • The map is smaller/faster, depending on your perspective, the map is either smaller or things move faster
  • Players can rejoin games they disconnect from, if you've ever played DotA you know why this is gameplay related
  • 8 Unique Items
    • Some orb effects stack
    • Move modifiers stack via multiplication
  • Players can forfeit during a game
  • All abilities are bound to qwer
  • The HUD is constantly focus on your Hero with the option to examine other Heroes
  • Shops can be used at all times via the b and are sorted for easier use
    • You can even buy parts of a recipe from that recipe

I admit this list is a little strapped for items, but when you design a game to be the same... don't be surprised when its the same.

On the other hand, if you're willing to look outside of gameplay, the major advancement HoN has over DotA is a ranking system and matchmaking. For those people who didn't resort to third part products, you are probably familiar with how frustrating finding the game type you want is with DotA or finding people with equal skill to play with. HoN solved both of these problems exceptionally, using an Elo system to rate and allowing the searching of games types and restricting certain games by rating.

Finally, HoN allowed for the creation of new maps to aid in different game play style (one bizarre example is a map that has everything cleared out of it, and only 1 lane).

What are the differences between Defense of the Ancients (DotA) and DOTA 2?

Question

Seeing that The International tournament has finished (and therefore DOTA 2 previewed) are any DOTA users able to list the differences/similarities? -- I'm sure Valve wanted to stay true, but have they? (Ignoring the beautiful new graphics, non warcraft 3 mod and network connectivity improvements)

Answer

There are virtually no differences. It's almost an exact copy of the original Warcraft 3 map, minus the improved graphics, down to the very level of the basic controls itself (animation cancelling, etc.).

The biggest difference that you'll feel while playing it is the matchmaking system which Dota2 will take from games like Team Fortress 2 and Left 4 Dead and a ranking system about which we don't know much yet.

I'd love to give sources on this, but I'm afraid I don't have ones on hand right now. There aren't exactly a ton of interviews on the game, and most of this stuff is gathered from simply watching the game (it looks like it's an exact copy) and posts by icefrog (one of the original Dota caretakers who now works on the game) on various forums.

Nevermore strategies in DotA

Question

I completely suck at DotA i am somewhat familiar with Nevermore. I can never kill any enemy heros even on easy. What strategies can i use to defeat enemy heros?

I do the basic get last hit to get cash and thats pretty much all i know. I buy the trent boots which is set to agility. The first two things i buy is a courier and the reg with +5 hp regen. I then get that sword with critical hits and upgrade it after getting demons edge.

I still suck and cant kill enemy heros even tho i have +130 damage (or more). What can i do?

Answer

Nevermore is actually one of the more powerful heroes there are a couple things you should know about him:

Staying alive: Nevermore's damage is largely proportional to how many last hits you got since you last died. So stay alive! You're going to need Lother (which turns your invisible) or Kelen's (which teleports you) to do this, so after boots (str or phase) this is your first pick up.

Combo: because you have 3 shadowrase, you need to cast it more than once to kill. Figure out the middle range usage (hint its the same range as your basic attack) and then follow up with short (if he comes after you) or long (if he runs away). You can also combo it to get more kills.

Requim: This skill trades on being right next to your target, so combo it with Lother or Kelen's for maximum effectiveness.

Ability build:

  1. Necromasty (to start grouping up your last hits)
  2. Shadowraze (lvl 1 isn't great, so hold off on it
  3. Shadowraze (Your combo is starting to get good)
  4. Necromasty
  5. Shadowraze (by now your combo is leathal)
  6. Requim
  7. Shadowraze
  8. Necromasty
  9. Necromasty 10+ you want to max out Requim then Presence of the Dark lord

Damage: Most of your early game kills revolve around Shadowraze, but once you get to mid game you're going to want to pick up some dps. Demons Edge is very nice, as is Manta Style (with bonus to survive). Stygian is going to be essential in late game as it stacks with your Presence. Nevermore doesn't trade on his life steal, but Mask of Madness' on use ability is nasty. I usually go for Demon's Edge -> Stygian -> Buriza. If you're still looking for items after that Skadi or Satanic are both good, but you should be in end game by then.

Ok, it sounds like you have a larger problem than working well with Nevermore, that extends to DotA in general.

A carry is a late game hero who can push a lane and take out 3-4 opposing heroes with little support. A Hard carry is a character who needs to farm up all game specifically for late game. A Soft carry is a player who doesn't have a ton of late game abilities but can become very powerful late game due to ganking.

Ganking is a term for going into an ally's lane and helping to kill their enemy. This technique usually relies on surprise and coordination. Ganking is useful for all heroes as nearby heroes split the xp of a kill and the last hit gains significant gold. Agility based heroes usually operate as glass cannons early on, so ganking is a way to gain experience and gold with minimal risk (the risk usually being getting ganked).

Nevermore's ganking technique usually relies on casting shadowraze back to back. Ideally you can get an ally to stun the target and there fore get off all 3 shadowraze. Once you hit level 6, if you have full Necromasty use your lothar's to get right on top of an opponent and Ult. Follow this up immediately with shadowraze (remember to attack first so you're pointed in the right direction, but don't wait for the attack to go off). The target should be low and try to run. Just dps him down till he's in range of your next shadowraze and enjoy the kill.

Farming is another technique to get to late game with an agility hero. Nevermore is especially good at farming in his own lane (known as laning) because of shadowraze. Adjust your range to be ideal for mid-range shadowraze (you can do this by attacking). Wait till the last one of your melee creeps is about to die then cast shadowraze. This should kill some of them and injure the rest. When they come into melee range your second shadowraze will finish them off. This is excellent farming technique, but very mana intensive so stock up on consumables.

How do i kill Aiushtha in DotA?

Question

I'm having trouble with Aiushtha the Enchantress?

The build which is really giving me trouble is the one where my opponent rushes the +25 intelligence wand. Then he goes for boots and perseverance. The first 8 levels are fine. When he gets to lvl10-12 I am no longer able to kill him. He does Base Damage + 90 every time he attacks me, around lvl 10 I'm still under 1,000HP.

I tried buying armor (+15) without success. What's more his many wisp heal quite quickly. I've tried sneaking behind him and unloading with little success, often leaving him at full hit points.

What's worse if he turns his staff into a sheep stick I'm even more behind.

I'm most concerned with 1v1 in the 10-12 level area.

-edit- I do notice the opponent running away to refill mana but usually he isnt gone long. Maybe i can play in a way to make him use mana repeatably without losing too much health and leave often? Maybe i should be less afraid of the ultimate or farm creeps instead of trying to kill her (or not far at all and only try to damage her?)

nevermore is one of my favourites, how do i kill aiushtha with nevermore?

Answer

Note: I haven't played DOTA in a few patches...

Enchantress biggest weakest are nukes because of her little HP
You said you enjoy Nevermore, your best bet would be too just stay out of her range during the lane, and just last hit appropriately...focus on not dying to build up your creep count (which gives you damage) at lvl 3-5 you could start using your long and mid range nukes to last hit+harass the Enchant, and disengage if she wants to fight. This will keep you at high health and her at medium, giving you a significant lane advantage (with three nukes all it takes is one good rune to kill her at medium life). When you do engage dont attack until you have used all your nukes, She has a move that slows you and if she decides to run you wont be able to chase if you attack her. If she ever procs her healing item, just back off and pop a clarity, then harass a litte more aggressively while its on Cooldown, this will force her to heal at well, giving you an EXP advantage.

Be sure to use chicken early game to keep mana/ life in good shape so you dont have to leave your lane and get boots before her so you can chase when you go in for the kill. If she is rushing the +25 INT item, you should have a significant early-mid game advantage with items, big enough to kill her a few times and come out on top.

Non Nevermore specific tips:

  • Nukes > Stuns when it comes to Enchant since attacking her will slow your hero.

  • You usually have to kill Enchant in 2 bursts, 1 to get her to pop
    heal, then another to kill.

  • At the start just last hit and attack her only when your creeps are there

  • Keep good control of runes during early-mid game

  • Use chicken so you dont have to goto town and heal (meaning you will always be gaining exp)
  • Keep an eye out for Enchants chicken, your long range nuke means you can kill it without even going up ramp sometimes

Hope this helps and be free to comment with any questions

Who is the guy in the DotA 2 Trailer?

Question

Here is a link to the trailer: DotA 2 Trailer.

Does this guy have any relevance to the DotA story line or world, or is he just a character they added into the trailer to put a face to the voice?

I am not talking about the heroes, I am talking about the big-nosed fellow who is doing the talking.

Answer

In all likelyhood, he is the shopkeeper for the store.

DotA has no real plot to speak of.

Leaked picture from dota 2,looks like him and resembles scourge secret shop

Best way to play Defense of the Ancients (Warcraft 3) on a Mac?

Question

I own a Macbook Pro. I want to play a PC game called WarCraft 3 - Defense of the Ancients. I have googled and done some research on how to play DotA on a Mac.

Most of resources I found recommended I buy Warcraft 3 for Mac version (yes, there is warcraft 3 for mac). However, I already own the PC version, and I don't want to waste another $60++ bucks to buy a Mac version (it's an old game as you guys already know).

I also came across some forums suggesting using a virtual machine or using Bootcamp to install Windows and play.

Using bootcamp and installing Windows sounded good for me, but after I did more research, I found that since I don't have experience with using Bootcamp, I might crash or need to reformat my Mac(when partitioning). Apple also recommends doing backups for your Mac when using Bootcamp. I do not want to go through all this troublesome things, thus I will not choose this method.

My last option is to install virtual machine. I used VirtualBox and already installed Windows XP. It runs and works perfectly fine. Now, I am wondering, if I install Warcraft into this virtual machine, and play the game, approximately 5 hours a day, will it crash my Mac?

Okay, to give a summary, following are my questions about running Wacraft 3 on VM Windows XP on MacBook Pro:

1) Will the game lag, the video render okay, etc? 2) Most importantly, will it damage my Mac?

If you have others methods of playing DotA on a Mac other than what I mentioned above, those are welcome too.

Answer

Firs, you should reconsider not buying it. You can have i for 20 USD, available for download at Blizzard site. Furthermore, IIRC you can register you activation key on the new Battle.net site and download the mac version for free.

As for you questions about the VM machine:

  • First, it should not damage you mac in any way, that's the point of a virtual machine. It's software computer, using a software hard drive. If it damage your machine, there is something really wrong with the program.

  • Warcraft 3 could run on it, but if it require graphic acceleration, don't expect too much. Some VMs have implemented graphics acceleration, but it is mostly experimental. Although, I think it should be OK for Warcraft3.

Question

I owned a macbook pro. I want to play a PC game called WarCraft 3, Dota. I have google and done some research on how to play dota on mac.

(S1)Most of them would recommend buy Warcraft 3 for mac version (yes, there is warcraft 3 for mac). However, I already owned a PC version, and I dont want to waste another $60++ bucks to buy a mac version (its an old game as you guys already know).

Thus, I come across some forums suggesting using VM (virtual machine) or using bootcamp to install windows and play.

(S2) Using bootcamp and install windows. Well, it sounds good for me, but after I do another research, if I am not good in, or no experience in bootcamp-ing, I might crash or need to reformat my Mac(when partitioning), and apple also recommend keep doing backup for your mac when using bootcamp, I do not want to go through all this troublesome things, thus I will not choose this method.

Last, my (S3) method is to install virtual machine. I use VirtualBox, and already install a windows xp, running and works perfectly fine. Now, I am wondering, if i install warcraft into this virtual machine, and play game, approximately 5 hours a day, will it crash my Mac? Okay, to give a summary, following are my questions about running Wacraft 3 on VM Windows XP on MacBook Pro:

1) Will the game lag, the video render etc?

2) Most importantly, will it damage my mac?

If you have others methods of playing dota (warcraft3) on mac other than what I mentioned above, please do share with me (or, mac users). Thank you

NOTE: (S) means Suggestion:

Although, I think it should be OK for Warcraft3.

what does unit production mean in the post game stats after playing dota?

Question

I know the main ranking list is the one shown when the game ends, but it's bothering me why some heroes almost always have the most unit production value? what does it represent since no one can really create units in dota?

Answer

Unit Production is just a hold-over from the fact that this is a Warcraft 3 map - the stat is standard in the normal game. It does have a disproportionate impact on the end rankings, though, so it does heavily skew the results.

Certain skills of heroes in DotA are performed by essentially creating a whole bunch of units for a limitted time. For example, Dwarven Sniper's Scattershot (if he still has that, it's been a while) creates a lot of units in order to produce the effect, so he tends to be one of the "high unit production" heroes. The logic behind it varies based on the hero and the skill in question, but if you look at which heroes tend to have high unit production, you can usually figure out what skill is the cause of these rankings.

Is Urn of Shadows in DotA affected by Magic Resistance?

Question

It's relevant to Maledict, I need to find out whether the damage from Urn is flat HP loss (true/pure damage or if it's reduced by 25% or more.

Thanks. =)

Answer

I believe the Urn of Shadows was changed from magic to pure damage in v6.69, with no changes to its nuke in later versions.
