What is the combination for an emerald dragon?

Question

In reading the wiki for trying to get rainbow dragons I am seeing people talk about an emerald dragon. I can not however find any other information on this dragon. Is it real and if so what are it's elements and breeding times?

Asked by James

Answer

According to the Wiki:

The Emerald Dragon can be bred by selecting a Crystal Dragon to mate with a Lichen Dragon at the Breeding Cave/Epic Breeding Island.

This wouldn't be the first time they've made a dragon only breedable by a single pairing (the Sakura dragon used to be), so I'd stick with that combo until more pairings are confirmed.

Interestingly, Emerald Dragons can't be bred with eachother:

The Emerald Dragon cannot be bred with any other dragon, including breeding with another Emerald Dragon.

How do you breed a Butterfly dragon?

Question

So a new limited time dragon has been added to DragonVale, namely the Butterfly dragon. I see this is a tri-combination dragon using Air, Lightning and Fire. With the last few dragons however simply matching these elements has proven to not be effective. What is a good combination of dragons to produce this type of dragon?

Asked by James

Answer

The answers from @Arremer and @EBongo below contain vital information so I can not accept one over the other, to that end here is that information combined:

Overview information from @Arremer

Popular combinations:

  • Firefly Dragon + Air dragon
  • Sonic dragon + Firefly Dragon

You need to be level 14.

Breeding butterfly dragon takes place in a normal breeding cave or on the breeding island.

Breeding time: 12 hours

A specific addition from @EBongo

Firefly is a requirement

It has been confirmed multiple places that one Firefly dragon is a requirement to breed this dragon. So your options are Firefly + Air or Firefly + Air Hybrid. For Air Hybrids, Sonic and Blazing have both been reported to work. They are probably best, since they do not introduce any new elements.

How do I breed a Current Dragon?

Question

There are credible reports of another hidden dragon similar to the Dodo Dragon (initially). It looks to be a water/lightning hybrid like the Plasma. Can I just use the combinations for Plasma, or is there more secret sauce? How will I know when I've gotten one?

Here's something on the dragonvale wiki: I haven't verified it though.

Is Level 30 the max level forever?

Question

I've been happily playing Dragonvale on my iPad for about five months, and was surprised to discover I'd hit the ceiling when I reached level 30. Is this a permanent limit, or does it get increased occasionally?

I'm just a bit annoyed, because I'd finally worked out the best way to get XP and suddenly I don't need it any more (and my sister is catching up with me while I'm standing still! :-P)

Asked by Quibbler

Answer

Although this would technically fall into "speculation on the future of the industry", I believe there is a good chance that if they continue to release updates to the game, there will be a level increase at some point.

They have already increased the level cap twice (from 20 to 25, and then 25 to 30), so it would seem reasonable that they'll continue to do so in future updates.

How do I buy an Epic Breeding Island?

Question

I am having a rotten time breeding rare dragons... How do I buy a breeding island?

Asked by Minehava

Answer

It's in the Islands menu, not the Buildings menu. You might have to scroll to see it. Make sure you're on the latest version as well, but I think it's always been there.

The Epic Breeding Island costs 125 gems. You can either buy the gems via an In App Purchase or earn them from Colosseum matches or gifts from friends.

Sakura dragon chances?

Question

I'm level 22 and I bred 11 level flower/tree poison/earth and got 2 lava, 4 flover, 4 tree, 3 mud, 4 poison. Where is my Sakura? How is it I haven't got a single one? I remember why I stoped playing for almost 6 months, a while back I bred every recomended combination for rainbow ans sun and moon and got everything but... Though others got 4-5 breeding The same. Please advice me what is it that Im doing wrong?

Asked by Minehava

Answer

Your chances are about 10-20% For Flower/Tree according to the wiki and the database. Other combinations seem not to work terribly well aside from clover/flower which seems somewhat promising.

If you don't have a Sakura, then it is nowhere as no such thing as your Sakura even exists.

You haven't gotten a single one likely due to poor luck. You were unclear how many of which of those 2 combinations you tried, but as I said, Flower/Tree seems the more successful. Dragonvale breeding is random. Even with a 99% chance of success, it is possible however unlikely to fail 1 million times and you are not guaranteed of anything.

Rainbow and Sun/Moon have much lower chances (something like 3% maybe as per the other question) so your tale is not uncommon. It's still random so others getting more of them through better luck means nothing to your situation.

There's not really much advice to give on what you are doing wrong as there's nothing wrong being done. The only advice to give when trying to beat a pseudo-random number generator is to keep trying. It's unclear whether the epic breeding island will help, but it might be worth a shot to increase your chances. You could try other combinations though and the ones listed on the database include some information about your chances, but most of the combinations other than Flower/Tree lack enough data to be reliable so try at your own peril.

Do limited dragons count as rare dragons for the Epic Breeding Island?

Question

The in game text for this item says:

Plus, our magical projections lead us to believe that some of the rarer dragon hybrids might come about more frequently without the distractions of a normal breeding cave.

So, for these purposes do the limited dragons like Bloom and Panlong count as "rarer dragon hybrids"?

Asked by EBongo

Answer

From my experience I think that the Limited dragons are put onto the list as partially rare. Seing that I got a Bone & Love dragon by accident. I don't think those ones are especially rare, but accordin to some people the clover dragon was even rarer than the rainbow dragon, I'm not saying that this is true or not... So. To get to the point. I think that some limited dragons are considered as rare. But most are just cartagorized as uncommon. If this was any help to any one then I was happy to help!

Breeding Sun, Moon and Rainbow dragons

Question

How to breed these types of dragon which have special elements (not fire, earth, plant etc.) on their tag in the game. They just have a sun, a moon or a rainbow. What basic elements should be mixed for each of them? Which kind of (hybrid I suppose) dragons should I mix to obtain those ones?

Asked by LudoMC

Answer

Rainbow Dragons are randomly bred from any combination that has at least 4 different elements.

Moon/Sun dragons can only be bred with a combo including cold and lightning. Sun dragons are bred between 7am and 7 pm while moon dragons are bred between 7pm and 7am. No, that's not a rumor.

Scortch/Cold are popular pairings for both sun and moon.

If I leave a Colosseum event indefinitely, will the element change or stay the same?

Question

As I still have a ways to go in the game in terms of levels, I still get Colosseum events for dragon elements I don't yet have. In some cases (Metal) I'd like to just do it and get it over with. In others (Air) I might breed one relatively quickly and then start it. If I leave the Colosseum event indefinitely will the element ever change? If so, how long does that take?

Asked by EBongo

Answer

I think that the event in the collosiam event changes every 24hrs. That is without a dragon. If there is a dragon in the collosium then the event will not change until u finish the event and claim your reward. Happy to help.

How do I breed a Sakura Dragon?

Question

There's a new Sakura Dragon in the market with the elements Plant, Earth and Fire. Sounds like it's limited time.

How do I get a Sakura Dragon egg and how will I know when I get one? Approximately how rare are they? How long do I have to breed one?

Asked by Ben Brocka

Answer

Per the wiki:

The Sakura Dragon can be bred by using a combination of dragons whose elements include plant, earth, and fire. The in game splash message indicated that you must be level 11+ to breed this dragon.

You may have bred a Sakura dragon if you get a breed time of 10 hours, but you will have to wait till you see the egg to be sure, since it could be a Lava dragon as well. The egg is brown egg with three cherry blossoms on it, like this:

How long does it take to revert a dragon using the Fountain of Youth?

Question

Because I apparently don't have better things to do, I've started to revert some of my dragons to babies using the Fountain of Youth. I was surprised that it wasn't an instant action, and actually takes time like breeding or egg incubation. So my question is - is the "revert" time for transforming an adult into a baby the same as breed/incubation time, or is it based on something else?

Asked by EBongo

Answer

It takes 12 hours regardless of dragon; I've checked myself and got 12 hours and the Wiki confirms.

How do you breed a Dodo dragon?

Question

What dragon combinations can I used to breed this dragon? Which dragons should I breed and how will I know whether I got one? How long are they available?

Asked by EBongo

Answer

A Dodo Dragon can be bred by pairing an earth dragon with an air hybrid. For example: an Earth dragon and a Chrome dragon is reported to work. You'll know you have a Dodo Dragon if you get a breeding time of 16 hours. The egg is brown with a wind symbol on it.

Dodo dragons are a hidden dragon that started appearing April 13th. The description suggests that they may be in the marketplace soon, possibly with other new dragons.

Cave drawings of the dodo dragon were first discovered on Mooretoss Island long ago by the great explorer Lewis Dodoson. They depict an ancient, flightless, and rather clumsy dragon. For centuries it was thought to be extinct, but we now know that while the dodo dragon may be rare, it is certainly not extinct! I wonder what other dragons have yet to be discovered!

It is not clear at this time if this will be a limited time dragon.

Here is a video showing the successful Earth+Chrome combination:

How do you breed a Steel dragon?

Question

Seems the new dragons are coming fast and furious as I am trying to keep up.

What are the successful combinations in order to obtain a Steel Dragon? I would assume Metal with some form of hybrid (Bronze maybe?)

Asked by James

Answer

Just breed a Metal dragon and a Cold dragon for a Steel Dragon, though you might get a Mine Dragon as well. It's best if you don't use hybrid dragons.

If you get a breeding/incubation time of 14 hours, you got a Steel dragon. If you get a time of 10 hours you got a Mine dragon instead.

What dragons do I need to complete the “Every Last One” achievement?

Question

The achievement text says:

Possess every dragon in DragonVale... all at once.

What is the complete list of dragon breeds needed? I'm hoping that limited dragons aren't included, since that would make this achievement impossible at this point. I'm also interested to know if dragons in the Hibernation Cave count towards this achievement.

Asked by EBongo

Answer

Limited dragons are most certainly not included, I got the achievement without having the Bone dragon, and I also didn't have a Plant dragon at the time either, so I think it only tracks whether you've ever had the dragons, despite the description.

There's lots of speculation on the Wiki and it seems like some people just aren't getting the achievement, but it might be due to game center being laggy or something.

One user said you just need 26 breeds of dragons to get it (no metal/seasonal dragons required) which is what I had when I got the trophy; I don't know if the Metal dragons are now required for the trophy or not. Corroborating the 26 breeds fact is the achievement is worth 26 points; one for each type of dragon when the achievement was initially release. I doubt they've changed the requirements since it was already released.

How much food does it take to get a dragon to level 15?

Question

I want to raise some dragons to level 15 as it's the highest level I can reach.

How many treats (total) does it take to get a dragon from level 1 to 15?

Asked by Ben Brocka

Answer

Hooray math time!

Dragons start off at level 1, needing to be fed 5 units of food at a time. Every level after that, the amount of food doubles - level 2 requires 10 food, level 3 requires 20 food, etc. You need to feed a dragon four times before it levels, so we can factor that in and pretend it's already required - a level 1 dragon requires 5 * 4 = 20 units of food to level, a level 2 dragon requires 40, a level 3 dragon requires 80, and so on.

Now, if we factor out 20 units of food from those numbers (it's 5 * 4, which are just constants we've applied), we get a simple pattern: level 1 requires 1, level 2 requires 2, level 3 requires 4, level 4 requires 8, and so on; if we can figure out a quick way to sum that up from level 1 to level 15, (or alternatively, from 2^0 to 2^14) then we just need to multiply everything by 20 and we'll have our answer.

Since we need to take the sum of those things, and we can tell by looking at them that they're powers of two, we stick "sum of powers of 2" into the ALL KNOWING ORACLE. That gives us this result, where someone says that the formula is 2^(N+1)-1 and that this is in fact a geometric series, and then we lose like three hours on Wikipedia but that's okay.

So, now we know that the equation is going to be of the form 20 * (2^(N+1)-1) or maybe it's N-1 or maybe just N, I don't know, I kinda lost track during that Wikipedia binge. Since it's early in the morning and we're not entirely sure we did that right, we'll write down the values that 20 * (2^(N)-1) puts out and see how they match what we know:

N: Result
1: 20
2: 60
3: 140

So it looks like if you want to do this calculation for level N, you'd put in N-1, making it 20 * (2^(N-1)-1). Otherwise, the values look good. Yay!

tl;dr:

It requires 655340 units of food to take a dragon from level 1 to level 15. In general, you can calculate the amount of food required to take a dragon from level 1 to level N by plugging N into the equation 20 * (2^(N-1)-1).

Do more expensive paths bring more visitors than stone paths?

Visitors like paths. But is it just the amount of paths, or the amount of money put into the paths?

Do gold/brick/marble paths bring more visitors to your island than stone paths, block per block?

Asked by Ben Brocka

Answer

Oddly, Stone Paths appear to be better at attracting visitors. To test this I filled one island completely with either sort of path.

Stone Paths: 185 visitors

enter image description here Marble Paths: 93 visitors:

Some other stuff in my park changed between the two screenshots, but the stone paths I added in the first screenshot actually added more than 100 visitors on their own, so it seems pretty clear Stone Paths have unholy visitor attracting power.

How can I breed a Bloom Dragon?

Question

I want to breed a Bloom Dragon. Which dragons should I breed and how will I know whether I got one? How long are they available?

Asked by Ben Brocka

Answer

A Bloom Dragon can be bred using Storm + Lichen dragons or any combination involving the elements Plant, Cold and Lightning. Storm + Plant or Lichen + storm also works.

You'll know you have a Bloom Dragon if you get a breeding time of 13 hours. The egg will be rainbow colored.

Bloom dragons started appearing April 2nd and from their description it sounds like they'll be around for the beginning of spring. It's currently not known how long they'll be available so breed them soon. From the message you get about them in the game "Breed them this weekend" I think we can assume they go away after Easter Sunday (April 8th)

If you breed two of them together you'll be able to breed new Bloom Dragons even after the event is over.

What can I do to increase my chances in the Colosseum?

Question

Doing better in the Colosseum nets more gems, more coins, and more XP - so naturally I want to perform as good as possible. Unfortunately, I have no idea what I can do to improve my chances. Should I choose a dragon aligned with the event, or opposed to it? Does level matter? Are hybrids or rares judged differently than the basics?

Asked by EBongo

Answer

Level your dragons. Dragon level appears very significant; my level ten dragons only occasionally won Gold medals and often won Silver or even Bronze ones. Using level 15 dragons I almost constantly get Gold medals.

I'm not sure to what extent dragon type matters, and the Wiki is very wish-washy about it. I always make sure my dragons match the element of the event and they almost always get Gold at level 15. My Panlong dragons appear to do particularly well, I've suspected Hybrids do better but Level is the only thing I know matters.
