How does the attack dog killstreak work?

Question

How many dogs spawn with the attack dog killstreak? Is there a set amount, or do they just spawn for X seconds?

Asked by Rapida

Answer

The dogs spawn for ~60 seconds continuously. There tends to only be 4-5 dogs active at once, but when one dies another replaces it by jumping into the map somewhere else.

However, the dog mechanic is quite a bit different in Black-ops then it was in World at War. Because dogs are harder to get (11 kill streak instead of 7) they now kill in 1 bite. But instead of immediately 'knowing' the location of enemies dogs are now attracted to gunfire, making them much easier to avoid

MW3 Care Packages - Killstreak Challenges

Question

I previously asked this question:

Black Ops Care Packages - Killstreak Challenges

It's asking whether or not killstreak rewards which are given when you open a care package killstreak contribute to challenges.

Do they contribute in Modern Warfare 3 as well?

Asked by Curt

Answer

Yes, they do. However, I believe it is only towards the "Prestige" challenges, and not the ones under the Assault Strike Package challenge menu.

Even though I never take the Assault strike package, I have several levels of multiple killstreak rewards "Prestige" challenges completed because of care packages I picked up that belonged to other players.

Does incognito kills count as silent too?

Question

I am playing Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood Multiplayer for a while now, and i just got 31 lvl, and the reward for this level is Kill Streak - Streak Bonus +750 but it says i need to make 5 SILENT kills in a row.

So my question is, do this kills have to be SILENT (need to act for a second in high profile to get rid of incognito) or it can also be INCOGNITO kill?

Asked by Kedor

Answer

An incognito kill does count as a silent kill, so even if you get 5 incognitos in a row you should still get the killstreak. The way it works is that if you have silent or higher, you get a certain "silent bonus" (200 points) score when you get the kill. That's what counts it as a silent kill. If you got an incognito kill, you get the "silent bonus" as part of the "incognito bonus" (300 points) so it still counts.

Also, here is a reference that says:

  • Streak Bonus +300: Awarded for killing three suckers while Silent (or Incognito), this bonus doubles the value of your kills if you can make them stealthily. In general, I recommend this Kill Streak for cautious, patient play. It’s easily doable and can add thousands of points to your score every game if played right.
  • Streak Bonus +750: Murder five people stealthily and you’ll be awarded 750 bonus points! Though this Kill Streak offers the greatest per-kill bonus, it’s also exceedingly hard to accomplish. In Wanted, Assassinate, and Alliance, odds are you will be taken out before filling five body bags. In Manhunt, Chest Capture, and Escort, you will rarely have the opportunity to remain Incognito while also being effective. Stick with the +250 or +300 bonuses instead.

Is there any effective way to defend against attack dogs?

Question

This is one killstreak reward I totally don't like (when I'm on the receiving end). I've tried knifing them (as the game suggests) but to no avail. The only effective strategy I have is to shoot down the dogs, but even this is not very effective since they run so fast.

Another strategy is to make it to high ground (on the top of containers, ladders, etc), but this usually leaves me exposed to enemy fire.

Does anyone have any good strategy for defending against attack dogs?

Asked by Sid

Answer

If you want to take the defensive way, keep in mind, that, dogs are attracted to noise.

So don't make any: Hide in some corner, don't shoot and don't move.

If you prefer to shoot them from the distance, like I do, use a gun with the silencer/suppressor attachment.

Praying they don't get to you is not always the best strategy, of course, so peek around and listen carefully to their barks, and shoot them if they get too close.

Update:
Oscar's comment made me curious about the mechanics behind an attack dog's chosen target. So I made a small test with a mate:

We stood almost side by side, I being two steps in front, in the wide area near the spawn point of the map "Launch", and let someone unleash the dogs from the other side of the tracks.
We made sure, in the ones that the dogs emerged from the middle corridor, in which they could see us at the same time, they always preferred me as the meat to bite. In this test suite, neither of us shot a single bullet.

In the second test, we kept the distance to the dogs equal, with him firing his weapon in their general direction. They always chose him.

The third set of tests brought an interesting result. Like in the first test group, I stood forward, with my mate much more distant to my right, a little behind me on the vertical.
He fired shots, I didn't.
The first dog to arrive headed in his direction, the second, as it appeared immediately behind the first one, headed for me. This was the repeatable behaviour, as we switched roles.

This showed us two things:

  1. They decide about their target dynamically and not as they hear a noise, but they head for the noise anyway until they see anything to bite.
  2. They prefer to eliminate targets that have a higher threat level (firing), then ease of access (distance).

Why do I have a 2 kill streak?

Question

I got two kills and I'm notified with a logo that appears on screen. It's also written "Recon"

I don't understand; I didn't chose the Hardline perk. My kill streak rewards are given when I get 3, 4, and 5 kill streak.

Answer

I discovered what happened.

I unblocked the specialist kill streak. By default when you got 2 kill streak, you get the perk Recon
