How can I get my copy of Murder to play?

Question

I've got a ROM of Rabbit Software's 1983 classic, Murder. I've got it as a .t64 file, what do I need in order to play it?

Answer

You will need a ZX Spectrum emulator, a quick Google search lead me to this page which list multiple emulators by platform. I can't tell which emulator is better, but your can check their stat page and see what's popular by platform.

Will new shopkeepers take the place of murdered ones?

Question

I was really trying to play a "good" character, but long story short, Belethor pissed me off for the last time. I often visited his shop to sell little odds and ends that wouldn't sell at the other, more specialized shops. Now that he's...not with us any more, will someone step up to take his place? Or will I need to find a new shop to frequent?

Answer

Once you kill a non-important character in the game, that character will be dead forever.

As for the shop; if one exists, it is possible that a relative takes over the shop and quests.

Can I save Roggvir?

Question

When you walk into Solitude for the first time, there is a Nord being executed for helping Jarl Stormcloak escape.

Is it possible to save this man from being executed?

Perhaps more importantly, is it useful to save him? (Or is he scripted to die, like the murder in Markath?)

Answer

Yes, you can save him, but its not useful in any way or form. He is very weak, and will die in 1 hit. As soon as you start attacking the guards, he will try to run away, causing other imperial guards in the city to take him down with 1 arrow.

If you do manage to kill the 3 guards fast enough, then you can interact with him, but there's no dialog. All he says is "hmm", "huh", "what do you want (insert race)?" etc.

He's ALIVE!

Can I permanently kill important people?

Question

In Morrowind, it was possible to permanently kill NPCs who were involved in the main story. This would result in a message basically informing you that you had broken the word and to reload a save if you want to make progress. In Oblivion, this was changed so that important NPCs were "knocked out" instead of killed.

In Skyrim, is there any (outside of console or game file editing) way to permanently kill an important NPC or can I go on a killing spree relatively care free?

Answer

I just confirmed it on the XBox 360.

I was walking along with an important NPC and we attacked a Giant. The Giant practically one-shotted him and kneeled down in agony while recovering.

So while they aren't blown unconscious into a ragdoll like in Oblivion, they are incapacitated while they recover.

The recovery takes around 10 to 15 seconds, so if you're relying on his power (like I was...) his demise into recovery mode really hurts you as the monsters stop aggroing him and focus on you instead.

What determines when you do a finishing move?

Question

Sometimes, when fighting an enemy, your character will do a special move, with a third person view animation, instantly killing the enemy. But these types of moves seem to be random, sometimes being used on enemies with nearly full health, other times not having a finishing move at all during a whole fight.

What are the parameters determining when a finishing move is used?

Answer

The official strategy guide confirms that they are random, and that they do no extra damage: they're pure aesthetics. It suggests that you can increase your chances by executing a power attack on the last enemy in a group.

How do I cannibalize people?

Question

The BBFC has confirmed the existence of cannibalism in Skyrim. I'm curious as to how this aspect fits into the game: Is it quest related like in Fallout 3? Where does the quest originate? What are the pros (quest rewards, etc) and cons (reputation decrease, etc) of choosing to cannibalize?

Answer

You'll get the ability to eat any humanoid creature by completing a quest chain that results in acquiring the Ring of Namira.

In Markath, you'll meet Kleppr and Frabbi, who will tell you a rumor about the Hall of the Dead. This sets up a quest chain that eventually leads to meeting Namira, who will give you a choice as to whether or not you should consume your first dead body.

If you do, she'll grant you the ring, and when wearing it, you'll gain the cannibalism ability.

Which children can the player character kill in Fallout 3?

Question

In Fallout 3, most children (not adolescents/teens) are made unkillable in the game. Aside from modding the game or artificially ageing them with the console, which can you kill anyway?

I know of two in the main game:

You can kill Harden Simms and Maggie - they both die when you nuke Megaton.

Are there any others? What about the DLCs/expansions?

Answer

No children can be directly killed in Fallout 3.

I don't recall if there are children in Tenpenny Tower, but if you release the ghouls there, all the tower's inhabitants will be killed.

The evil resolution at the end of Take it Back!

will kill all Capital Wastelanders in the long term, aside from those who were born on vaults.

You can also enslave children at the end of Those! and on Little Lamplight.

At the Brotherhood of Steel Citadel, there's Arthur Maxson, who

will probably be killed if you choose to blow up the Citadel at the end of Who Dares Wins (in the Broken Steel add-on)

You monster.

Is there a way to take out unsuspecting enemies silently?

Question

Rage has plenty of opportunities to attack enemies that are unaware of your presence. Consider the following situation:

Sneaky time

It would be very easy for me to dispose of the gentleman sweeping the floor in one of several ways. However, I am unaware of a way to go about it without making the other enemies in the room aware of my presence. A shotgun blast to the back of the head would definitely do the trick, but would obviously be too noisy. Trying to be more subtle and relying on my fists doesn't cut it either, as I would need to get too close to my target and he would end up noticing me.

Is there some sort of trick to it that I am not thinking about, or perhaps a suitable weapon that you get later in the game?

Answer

Fists, as you already said, are not that useful for silent attacks.

You get the wingstick early in the game, a boomerang-like quick use silent item.

When you complete a quest that has you go to wellspring and then back to the first town you will get the Striker crossbow, which is a silent primary weapon (Dan Hagar even mentions this when he gives it to you).

How can I kill Mom?

Question

Mom keeps haunting my dreams, and after countless battles with this horrible woman, I only find myself badly beaten up.

Are there any strategies or items that can make this boss fight somewhat easier?

Answer

I have just managed to kill Mom, after a few previous attempts that did not go so well. What made it possible for me were two things, basically:

  • High health: I had 7 full hearts when I faced mom. This was partially due to luck (lots of extra health pickups/pills) and also due to me hoarding money (which allowed me to fill up on health from the shop and arcade on the same level before the final showdown). I beat mom with at least 2 hearts to spare, though (possibly 3... I was too busy not dying to pay proper attention).
  • High damage: I was lucky enough to have some decent damage by the time I faced mom by picking up a small rock, and by clinging to a strength tarot card until that very showdown. This allowed me to empty Mom's health bar quickly, and was essential in handling the lesser baddies that Mom keeps spawning (I also picked up the common cold for some poison damage over time, which was quite handy).

Of course, this would not have helped me without at least a bit of strategy:

  • Clear out the stage. Mom's stage usually contains an assortment of rocks. Try to get rid of them as fast as you can, as all they do is limit your maneuverability (also, they might hide a handy power-up, rarely). Of course, if it's not getting hurt or clearing out some rocks, leave the rocks alone. Be aware that Mom's stomp also destroys rocks.
  • Always be mindful of the shadow indicating Mom's incoming stomp. At the very least get out of the way, but if you really want to make your life easier try to lure troublesome enemies into the damage area. I haven't seen a spawned baddy that survived a single stomp.
  • If you have to stay still, do it in one of the corners or at the center of the room. Mom can damage you directly if you stand too close to one of the four doors on her stage, and this will also let you keep an initial distance from spawning baddies (which spawn from the doors). Actually, try not to spend too much time in front of the doors regardless, even while running around.
  • If there's nothing trying to kill you, hug a wall, pick a door and shoot at it. Most chances are one of Mom's body parts will poke through one or more of the doors soon enough, and there's no reason not to cash in on that for some heavy damage.

I managed to pull this off without using my item at all (I had Mom's pad). I suspect that if I were to have a useful item (such as my little unicorn), the battle would have been even easier.

Also, there is an item called the Bible that makes the fight against Mom amazingly easy, as it instantly kills her when used (I suspect, however, that it only becomes available after defeating her at least one time).

How do I defeat Atlas?

Question

So, I am currently up against Atlas, but I can't beat him.

I am enacting my 1-step battle plan (shoot at Atlas a lot), but it doesn't seem to be working. In addition, while I am doing this, he's tearing me to shreds because I can't seem to dodge his projectiles at all, even while sprinting!

  • Am I maybe supposed to shoot something else in the environment, and not the giant boss itself?
  • Or am I simply not shooting him enough?

Some tactics would be appreciated. If it helps at all, I have the N.R.G. Railgun at my disposal, with which I've been shooting his giant glowing noggin repeatedly — to little apparent effect.

Answer

I thought I had to shoot at his head to but I soon found out that you have to aim at the parts of his body that glow orange. You have to defeat his orange armour twice and on the third time he goes berserk and rips out some sort of red gear and totally demolishes you no matter what. Im still trying find out how to beat him completely.

Hope this helped :)

Are there any consquences to killing the innocent?

Question

There are many innocent civilizians in Deus Ex: Human Revolution. Assuming I don't do so in sight of a police officer, are there any consquences to killing civilizians, or am I free to soak Detroit red with the blood of its people?

Answer

As far as I have been able to determine there is no downside aside from not getting Ghost or Smooth Operator bonuses.

Khaaaaaaaan! (how to kill him)

Question

How am I supposed to kill the orc chief Khan? He is faster than me, just grabs me and pummels me to death. I don't have enough time to really hurt him before he is able to grab me.

My fight with him looks something like this:

screenshot with lots of blood flying around

Any ideas on how to survive this boss fight?

Answer

Bubble immediately to buy yourself some time. Then you can use Time Warp and Haste to slow him down/speed yourself up enough to prepare a devastating attack and hope for a one shot.

Blizzard Balls (1Earth+4Ice) are particularly effective.

How can I not snap people's necks (or only snap it a little bit)?

Question

So the wall-punching augmentation (in the Cybernetic Arm Prosthesis augmentation tree) allows you to punch through weak walls, but will automatically have you snap the neck of anyone standing on the other side of them.

Am I correct in assuming this will ruin a pacifist playthrough? Is there any way to do a non-lethal wall-punch and only snap his neck a little bit?

Answer

Since breaking through walls is accomplished by using E instead of Q, there is no distinction between lethal and non-lethal intentions. When there is a person on the other side, you snap his neck and get the "Man Down" exp bonus without the "Merciful Soul" bonus you get from a non-lethal takedown. Since the game recognized this as a kill, I'm sure it will ruin the pacifism achievement/trophy.

How can I avoid killing people?

Question

I hate to get murder jobs in the game (what should I tell Michelle?) ... until now I basically played the missions as usual, but as the game is "open-world" (well, is it?) I thought I could maybe play it differently ... right now I'm right before the "No Love Lost" mission, where I have to kill the biker boyfriend of Faustin's daughter. I don't mind getting unnerving people out of my way, but I'm certainly not born to be a hitman for other assholes. How can I avoid killing people in the game but still advance in missions?

Answer

It's... not that sort of game. Some of the missions explicitly require you to kill one or more people - including unarmed people. It's disconcerting, yes, but I'm pretty sure there's no way to advance the plot without doing these kinds of missions. The GTA series is infamous for the terrible things you do - it has missions in which you beat up juries, missions when you distribute drugs to kids, missions when you bury people alive, etc.

Alternatively, you can forget about the main plot entirely and just play the game as an open-ended sandbox, taking jobs as paramedic, vigilante, competing in races, etc. (though you have to kill some people just to unlock those options...).

One final thing, if you want to avoid running over pedestrians during intense car chases, use the horn! Pedestrians will run away and jump out of the way when you honk. It's also useful for warning other cars - so useful, in fact, that I've bound the horn to one of my mouse buttons (playing on the PC).

Is it possible to kill everyone or are some NPCs unkillable?

Question

Is it possible to kill every last person (and non-person) in Fallout New Vegas? Or are some NPCs unkillable?

Not that I would advocate or condone such a monstrous action, just idle curiosity.

Answer

Yes.

Unlike Fallout 3, no NPC's have 'plot armor' or are otherwise permanently flagged as 'Essential'. You can kill every NPC in the game according to the developers, save one. In fact, it was reported before release that one of the pre-release playtests consisted of a run through in which noone was spared. The final body count reportedly clocked in somewhere around 2500-3000 kills.

That said, there are, technically, 3 exceptions.

  1. The Gun Runners Vendor-Tron outside Freeside cannot be killed because he is behind a wall that cannot be passed without using the console to no-clip through. He is 'killable', but he is unreachable, rendering that fact moot. However, he is also a robot.
  2. Yes Man technically can not be killed. If killed he will simply respawn. This is explained in that he is not actually a specific Securitron, but rather a program (more like a virus really), that can run on any Securitron, and if the one which he currently inhabits is destroyed, he will just download into a new body. Yes Man is the 'only character that cannot be killed' that the devs bragged about, because he is required to trigger the final quest. If all other paths fail, 'Wild Card' is the fallback.
  3. Children, such as those found in Freeside, can not be harmed or killed, at all, ever.

How Many Ways Can I Run Over Those Raptors?

Question

So I'm playing the web version of Raptor Safari, and it dawns on me that I've been slaughtering raptors in a large variety of different ways, all of which have been generating different amounts of score. Which brings me to the question:

Does anyone have a complete list of all of the different ways you can snuff out a raptor, and approximate score values that are generated for successful completion of each method?

Here is a taste of some of the different methods.

Roadkill

Roadkill

Epic Roadkill

Epic Roadkill

Clean Hit

Clean Hit (Hitting a Raptor with just the Spikey-thing, without throwing it.

Toss

Toss (Hitting a Raptor with just the Spikey-thing after releasing it.)

Wheeee

Wheeee!

Answer

I'll post some kills you haven't mentioned, as well as acts that do not seem to count as special kills. This list gets updated as I find new ways to maim raptors. Pictures will be added if I remember to capture the moment. You can see the points for each kill in the pictures, so they approximate how much each kill is worth. Kills are sorted from being on average worth the least to the most.

Special Kills

Flying Raptor! (Launch a raptor into to air after killing them.) Boosting helps with these kills, notice the poor chap near the bottom left. Points are awarded based on distance (not pictured, this is before the Flying Raptor! finished). Because you can add this to any kill I recommend trying for it every time:

Wheee!

Killed! (Kill a raptor with an impact without hitting them with your car.) As Gnome Slice pointed out, driving a crate into a raptor will get this kill.

Weird.

Clothesline! (Kill a raptor with your chain.) Not worth many points as it's very easy to do, even easier than tossing:

Give 'em the chain.

Raptor on Raptor! (Hit one raptor into another.) Fun fact, you can stick more than one raptor on your spiky ball then toss all of them. Bonus points for more throwing more than one (see below the picture for how to do this), but no new shiny text. You can see I hit one with three others in the picture, and it's worth a decent number of points. However, it's hard to drive with three raptors on your jeep:

One big family.

To chain raptors, kill how ever many raptors you want on your chain by tossing a new ball per raptor. Then drop one last ball out and roll over each of them collecting a longer and longer chain. You have to do this because each ball can only stick to two raptors at a time, so this uses a ball per raptor to get the job done. Then you can swing around a ridiculous chain of death to nail other raptors, but it's not worth as many points and it is fun.

Siamese Raptors! (Hit a raptor with the spiky ball when another raptor is stuck on your spiky ball). Worth slightly more points than Raptor on Raptor!, but also difficult to do. Raptors omitted from the picture to save their dignity:

Ouch.

Pushed In! Live Specimen! (Push a raptor into the exporting beam. Live Specimen is achieved if you don't kill them in the process.) Pushed In! provides a meager number of points, but Live Specimen! is high into the tens of thousands. You can herd raptors like cattle into the beams to get Live Specimen! with ease:

Beamed!

Jumpkill! (Jump and land on top of a raptor.) Points are proportional to the distance you traveled and are well worth the effort:

Aftermath of landing on a raptor. Where'd he go?

Holy Pterosaur! (Kill one of the three flying Pterosaurs.) This is allegedly difficult to do. This video shows a great way of getting all three. If you're awesome, you kill them with your spiky ball:

Flying can't save you now!

Figure that one out.

Now, for kills that don't seem to count:

  • Backing up into a raptor. Don't waste 10 minutes like I did trying to do it.

  • Ramming a raptor into a rock or tree. It counts as whatever special kill you performed with no bonus to smashing them into terrain. Will test a little more when I can sandwich a raptor closer to a cliff-side.

How can I kill adorable animals?

Question

With version 1.0.4 of Terraria came fluffy little bunnies hopping in my fields and happy little goldfish swimming in my lakes, grateful for the sanctuary my base provides them against the horrors of the wider world.

So, naturally, I'm trying to kill them.

Not because I expect it to be useful, just because the idea amuses me. Of course, the problem with this plan is that my arsenal is having distressingly little effect on them. Lasers, poisonous thorns, hell-forged steel… it all passes harmlessly through them. And I haven't been able to nail one of the little bast— er, dearies with a grenade, yet, so I don't even know whether that's effective.

So, any thoughts on how to kill them?

Answer

You cannot interact with Bunnies or Goldfish because the game treats them like NPC's. Therefore, you have two options for evil, wholesale slaughter!

  • Lure an enemy into the bunnies!

Slimes are everywhere aboveground during the day, and zombies are relentless at night. Though they will not seek out and destroy these fluffy friends, if you put yourself on the far side of one of the helpless NPCs, they will quickly decapitate them if they jump into the rabbits, or if the rabbits jump into them (in an impressive disregard for the laws of physics, I might add!)

Enemies may be 'coaxed' into following you by hitting them with a weak weapon, such as a wooden arrow shot from a wooden bow.

If you hear the "splotch" sound of something dying, or see numbers pop up on an otherwise dark part of your screen, it means that an enemy found its way into a critter on it's own. (If underwater, be sure to loot the dropped goldfish!)

There is one aspect of bunnies that may make this difficult, however; Bunnies only spawn in the 1/3 of the world nearest your spawn -- it is not inconceivable that the reduction in monster spawns (from your moved-in NPCs) makes it harder (if not downright impossible) to find a fiend to sick on your fuzzy hopper in the first place. If this is the case, perhaps you would prefer to...

  • Use Lava!

If dwarf fortress has taught me anything, it's that magma solves everything. Bring some magma to the surface, and any hapless NPC who walks into where you "accidentally" spilled it will be in a world of hurt. (Try this trick on the Clothier too!)

Finally, you can use Vile Powder to transform bunnies and goldfish into corrupt versions of their former selves. These incarnations can be slaughtered mercilessly as long as you like (or have corrupt animals to slaughter).

Don't forget your evil laugh; remember -- you can't spell slaughter without 'laughter'!

Is it possible to kill Vlad?

Question

Is it possible to kill Vlad? I've tried many powerful beam spells and charged shots but he regenerates too quickly.

This question specifically is in reference to whether Vlad can be killed before the fight in chapter 9.

If it can't be done solo, can it be done with 4 players?

Answer

No, you cannot kill Vlad.

until chapter 9

He usually sits there passive, until you move so far away from his spawn point, then he disappears. I think he's a ninja, because he disappears in a puff of smoke.

I've dispensed about 50,000 hitpoints on him in single/multiplayer mode. He bleeds a lot, he can be set on fire, frozen, but his health never changes.

As I said, he's probably a ninja. Right? <_<

How Do I know What To Use For Killin'?

Question

So I'm playing Castaway, and I eventually earn some quest items, such as the Beetle Shield and the Fire Scimitar. Unfortunately, in this game, there's no way to view the stats of an item, other than in the shop. How do I know how these items compare with the others in the shop?

Answer

Those stats in the shop aren't the items' actual stats. They're the stats relative to your current equipment's stats. So, all you have to do is equip the unique item that you want to compare and visit the Blacksmith to see how much better/worse every item sold is. There is a bug however that the stats in the shop won't know that you have stuff equipped right after loading your game until you enter an area and come back.

If you want to compare two quest-rewarded items, you can equip one, look at your stats and then equip the other one. (That's assuming that there are more than one item per equipment type. I'm only roughly 1/4 done with the game.)

When do Fighter AI monsters voluntarily drop down wooden platforms?

Question

Consider this pit:

Goblin mosh pit

During a Goblin Invasion, I noticed that some of the goblins drop down into it. As you can see, it's too deep for them to jump out of, and a little lava and I'd have myself a Blood Moon/Invasion grinder.

However, they don't always jump down. Sometimes, mostly when I'm nearby, they just jump right over the pit. Mostly, goblins coming from the right seem to fall for/in it.

How would I need to build this pit so that the goblins always jump down, other than positioning myself directly under or in it?

Answer

I believe the only way to ensure they move downward is to position yourself below the pit. This is why most of the mob traps you will see involve making them go above you, usually jumping up platform ladders into a pit they can not get out of.

Just basic observation of humanoid movement is as follows (from my own personal experience) Fighter AI based creatures will choose to move' down when ever they can, even through platforms. They also will jump when they reach a cliff face. Lastly, when you are around and on an elevation different than the humanoid creature, and that creature approaches an edge where elevation goes up or down, it will jump.

Hope this helps
