Is there a way to use .flac files in Audiosurf?

Question

A while ago, I played the game Audiosurf on a friends computer and I remember it to be good fun. The problem is, if I remember correctly, the game only supports the usage of .mp3 files (and maybe .wav). Since I have ripped all my CDs to .flac files and do not want to make .mp3 copies of my collection, I would like to know, is there a way to use .flac files in Audiosurf?

Asked by Michael K

Answer

Yes, there is. You can play FLAC files with vanilla Audiosurf, it's as simple as that. (screenshot)

It's not explicitly listed on its Steam store page, but I own it and can attest to the fact that FLAC files are definitely supported. Seems kind of silly not to advertise this as a selling point, but there you go.

For future reference, this is the list of file extensions the current file browser accepts:

mp3, wma, m4a, m3u, ogg, flac, wav

How do I make a Candy Stripe?

Question

In Audiosurf the achievement Candy Stripe has the requirement "Make a candy stripe". What configurations count for this achievement and what mode should I use to get it?

Answer

A candy stripe is alternating red and white blocks in one lane. You must play on at least medium difficulty for white blocks to spawn.

One way to do this is with a Pusher, on medium or hard, as shown here:

The Pusher is capable of moving blocks from one lane to another, so you can ignore all the blocks except for the red and white ones, and just drop them into the same lane. Since you're not going for score, you can stay on the shoulder for most of the level.

If you're making your stack in the middle lane, and you want to move a block onto the stack from the left lane, line up your Pusher with the block and then hold X (or the Right Mouse Button if you're using the mouse) as you pass it. For blocks in the right lane, line up and press Z, or Left Mouse Button.

You can also use Pointman Pro, if that's more your speed:

Holding left mouse button will hold a block you're about to go over, and pushing right mouse will drop it.

I'd rate this as "easy" as far as the holiday achievements go. Total time invested is probably going to be less than 15 minutes even if you're new to Audiosurf.

Where Does Audiosurf Put Corkscrews?

Question

Color shifts and track steepness are determined by the intensity of the song. However, I find that corkscrews are placed seemingly randomly. What determines their placement?

EDIT: Adding a bounty because the only two answers are a bit lacking in evidence.

Answer

After playing for a while, I'm now under the impression that corkscrews are in fact placed completely randomly in the song. Unlike other people who seem to only encounter them at intense moments of songs, I may have actually encountered MORE of them in the least intense moments of songs (intro, outro), in addition to some others which seemed arbitrarily placed throughout tracks.

However, given that on any given track, the corkscrews will always be in the same place, there must be some sort of operation going on that determines their placement, but I'll be damned if I have a clue what it is.

Anyway, this was too long for a comment.
