When do special features get unlocked in Gran Turismo 5?

Question

I want to find out when special features like damage, better AI, weather effects etc gets unlocked in GT5, but the searches I performed just turned up guesses or rumours. Is there a definitive answer for how GT5 unlocks work?

Asked by jwaddell

Answer

I believe there is no "unlock" for features. Damage is in, and can be turned on in some modes. Weather effects appear in certain races (marked "change weather/time" in selections). Some higher level and special races have rules like no skid recovery, but no new magic will appear otherwise.

Software updates constantly provide more features, of course.

Techniques and tips for tuning cars in GT5

Question

I've been upgrading, race modding and generally tinkering with my cars over the last few days and I've come apart trying to tune them effectivly.

Are there any guides or such? At the moment, I pick a track I'm good on, currently using Deep Forest Raceway as it has a good combination of curves and straights. I tend to like a grippy car with slightly twitchy steering, so have opted for this track to suit that driving style. Then I am just firing up practise and lapping a few times, tweaking and lapping again.

If the laptime is slower or the car feels bad, I undo it and start over.

My question revolves around the principle that lap times are an effective meter for tuning changes (suspension specifically). The problem lays in 'How do I find out what combinations of changes are effective?'

I have read and reread all the manual pages and am starting to understand, but I would really like some guidance or input from more seasoned drivers.

Answer

As far as tuning guides go, give these links link link a try. They will show you most of the tuning-related information you're looking for, but to summarize the GT5 tuning process, here are a few quick tips:

For any of the tuning upgrades that you can buy, more is almost always better. In other words, the more money you spend, the better your car will become. The problem is knowing where to put your money first, so that you don't blow all your credits adding 200 horse power to a car, when all your car needed was a slightly better set of tires.

I always start the process by looking at what sorts of cars that AI competition will be brining to a race, and calculating the power to weight ratio of those cars and comparing it to the best cars I have. The power to weight ratio is shown for every one of your cars (when you are in your garage). If your cars all have much worse PWRs than the AI, there is little you'll be able to do to win a race. BUT you might have a race car with race tires in your inventory that can win against the computer, even with a lower PWR. At that point, you'll just have to try it out to see where your car stands against the computer. It will probably be a close race. The tighter and less-straight the track, the more importantly tires, weight, and suspension tuning come into play. The longer, straighter tracks (Indy, Daytona, and LaSarthe) favor power and transmission tuning.

As far as handling is concerned, the weight of the car will provide a very rough indication how the car will perform. A big, heavy 2500 kg pickup truck will necessarily be less nimble than a 700 kg Lotus Elise, and will be slower around a tight track, even if it has a high PWR. If your car has a high PWR and a lower weight than the competition, then you stand a fairly decent chance of winning... roughly speaking.

As important as PWR and weight, there are races in the game (Nascar and 'Formula Gran Turismo', for instance) where you cannot tune the engine or curb weight of the car or (** see below), and where all the cars make similar horsepower and are the same weight. In these cases, you will have to do some research PRIOR to starting the competition regarding what sort of spring rates, chassis height, down force, transmission top speed, tire compounds, and driver aides (ABS, ESC, traction control, etc) to use. An incorrect car setup in these races can make the entire competition impossible to beat. These are tough races because you cannot simply buy your way to competitiveness, but that also makes these competitions fun to race.

** - oil changes, engine rebuilds, and chassis rebuilds can still be used to increase engine performance, even if you cannot add a turbo or soup-up the engine.

Here is alink for the NASCAR setup.

Here is a setup for the Formula Gran Turismo race (in the extreme series):

The transmission settings are different for every track, but here are a few settings that might help get you started:

  • Downforce
  • F 70
  • R 90
  • Gear
  • Top speed 242
  • LS
  • 15/45/55
  • Suspension
  • Height
  • 5/5 (10/10 for bumpy)
  • Spring rate 17.4/17.5
  • Dampers E 8/8
  • Dampers C 6/6
  • Roll bars 7/7
  • Camber angle F 2.0 R 1.0
  • Toe angle F 0.00 R -0.20
  • Brake balance 4/1

Most of the time, you don't need to get anywhere near as much detail for your car setup, compared to the F1 races. Early on in the game, you can more easily adjust your PWR and weight of your car to compensate for any suspension setup deficiencies.

The first power-adding mods that you'll want to try (which are also the cheapest) are:

  • Engine racing chip
  • Racing air filter
  • Racing muffler
  • First stage of engine upgrade
  • Better tires. It doesn't add power, but it will certainly help.
  • Sports suspension

If that's not enough, then you may also want buy the 1st stage of weight reduction, since that helps better both the PWR and curb weight of your car at the same time.

I hope this helps!

How to tune the Red Bull X2010 to make easier to drive?

Question

I'm trying to do the Special Seasonal Event with the Red Bull X2010, that GT5 send for the win of Sebastian Vettel.

I've found that this car is very hard to drive for me, and after several laps, all the times are worse than the third time, and also are invalid (because I went out of the track).

What can I do to make this car easier to drive?

(Apart of practice a lot, of course)

Answer

If you increase the downforce front and rear this should make the car a lot more stable.

Adjusting the limited-slip differential can also make a significant difference to the car's handling. I found increasing the settings helped a lot, particularly accelerating out of low-speed corners.

GT5 Racing Daytona in Nascar

Question

I'm currently racing the A-Spec Extreme series, and despite having won the Nascar Series with a gold, the last race, the best I can do is last. Last by about 15 seconds!

I managed to start lapping about 43s a lap and then it seems to drop off to about 47-48s a lap.

I noticed that I'm losing speed in the corners whereas the computer drivers, watching the replay at least can corner at 198-202mph, whereas I'm running about 185mph, which is losing my seconds lap on lap.

Are there any tips? Setup tricks? Or advice for racing this race? I've tried Soft compound racing tyres, tweaking up and down downforce, and tinkering with suspension, but I can't seem to corner fast enough to stick with the pack.

I do understand that Nascar is aggressive and you do need to block the line and train to draft and such, but you need to be in the pack to do that!

Answer

The trick with NASCAR driving is to turn off the ABS. That was the only way I could complete the Jeff Gordon special events.

Are there American cars faster than NASCAR cars?

Question

In B specs I'm trying to win an American championship that only allows American cars.

I've tried with a Pilot Level 30 and a NASCAR car, but he can't win.

I'm wondering if there is any American car faster (or with more performance points) than the NASCAR cars to use in this race?

Answer

The GT5 Cars website lists all the cars in GT5 and allows you to search on particular criteria. Search for cars from the United States and then sort the results by P/W (power to weight ratio).

I'd suggest picking one of the Chaparral cars or one the Ford GT LM cars, as they're MR layout which should handle better than FR.

What strategies are there for winning the challenge race: Fiat 500 trial mountain circuit?

Question

How to win gold on challenge race: Fiat 500 trial mountain circuit? How can I exploit the regulations of this car to the max?

Answer

Here's what I did to at least manage 2nd place:

  • Lighten the car as much as possible, then add ballast to fulfill requirements. Why do that? You can get almost 50/50 weight distribution.
  • Tune the car and then use a limiter to the down to the allowed HP. With extreme tuning, the engine's response curve will be a rectangle.

Otherwise, slipstream and drive smoothly.

What factors affect the tiredness of the drivers in B-Specs?

Question

The level of the driver increases the resistence of tiredness.

I've heard that the type or power of car could affect too. Is it true?

What other factors affect the tiredness of the drivers in B-Specs?

Answer

From what I've seen, lateral acceleration and their physical shape play a role.

Lateral acceleration would be a result of the type of car and the course.

Is there any trick to win the “Within one hundredth” trophy?

Question

The trophy "Within one hundredth" is "Win a race by a margin of 0.01 seconds or less."

It's seems almost impossible for me to be so precise, is there any (legal) trick to win it?

Answer

A lot of people got this in the first NASCAR race in the Special Events. You can get in first, go the finish line and wait. When the second place car comes up, have it push you across the finish line.

How can I win the monaco race in B-Spec?

Question

I've tried to win the Monaco race in B-Spec (the old cars) several times, and the max I've get is third position.

I've used the Toyota 7, with a driver of level 24.

The Toyota 7 is upgraded to the max, the oil of the car has been cleaned, the wheels are "soft/competition", and the configuration of the car is the default.

How is it possible to get the gold?

Answer

Level your driver up a bit more and it should be a lot easier. I'd suggest trying it again when your driver is up to level 30.

Also, are you monitoring your driver and giving him instructions? Many B-spec races can be won by simply leaving the driver to get on with it, but Monaco is one where you'll need to constantly monitor your driver.

Changing the settings on the car should help a little - increase the downforce front and rear, and shorten the gearing a bit for better acceleration (but make sure the engine doesn't hit the rev limiter on the fastest parts of the circuit).

How do I toggle the windscreen wipers on and off?

Question

So I was steadily racing along in my Lotus Elise, approaching a corner, when I was slightly distracted.

Needless to say, this distraction ended with me going sideways across the gravel, and in a blind panic to halt my car before I was three miles off the track, I ended up button mashing to find the handbrake.

While this was occurring, I must have pressed something else by accident, since the windscreen wipers turned on. When back on track I continued to button mash but could not find the button I pressed to turn them off again, nor could I turn them on in a future race.

What button toggles the operation of the windscreen wipers?

Answer

To toggle the wipers, press R3 (push the right analog stick in).

How do I customise my suspension settings?

Question

I have just purchased a 'Fully Customisable Kit' so I can tune my suspension based off a guide I found, but I cannot find an option anywhere that will let me change the suspension settings after equipping the item in the Tuning Shop.

There must obviously be one somewhere, so where is it?

Answer

Go to your garage and choose your car for which you've bought the upgrade. When hovering with cursor above it, press triangle. In the options for that car, go to tuning and you will be able to make adjustments there.

How to fix "network incompatibility error 717" on GT5

Question

We have regular weekly GT5 racing and some new racers can't enter the hosts "My Lounge" due to "network incompatibility error 717".

This seems to be caused by issues with router configuration, blocked ports according to one friend, and their "cache" according to another.

It would be great to have a definitive answer on what causes this and how to fix it so I can point new racers to it.

Thanks in advance

Answer

Ask everyone to open the ports in their router, GT5 Prologue reports:

Gran Turismo 5 Prologue online uses the following ports for communication with game servers.

If you experience problems connecting to online races, you may want to check the status of these ports in your router or firewall to see if they are being blocked or filtered. Your router instruction manual or manufacturer will be able to assist you with opening these ports up.

  • TCP Ports: 80, 443, 5223, and 10070 - 10080

  • UDP Ports: 3478, 3479, 3658, 10070, and 50100

Note: Make sure to enable these TCP/UDP ports in BOTH directions and are entered into the TCP and UDP port fields in your router / modem.

http://eu.gran-turismo.com/gb/support/d4219c13.html

Googling reports that the ports for GT5 itself are:

TCP: 80, 443, 5223
UDP: 3478, 3479, 3658, 5658

So, I would suggest to just open the ports for Prologue and add TCP 5223 and UDP 5658 to be sure.

What is the most efficient way to make money in Gran Turismo 5?

Question

What is the most efficient way of earning money in Gran Turismo 5, in terms of credits earned per time spent driving?

Answer

Some of the Seasonal Events added in the recent update (1.05) have very good prizes. So far I've only attempted the 493hp GT-R race but coming 3rd gave me 340,000.

This update has also increased the rewards for winning races, but this is only in effect until the end of January 2011.

How are Gran Turismo online games physically hosted?

Question

A group of my friends have been having regular GT5 evenings using Community > User > My Lounge.

We were wondering how games are physically hosted. Are they managed by one of the PlayStations (denoted by the crown next to the username?) or are they managed by the PSN (GT5? Polyphony?) servers?

Last night the network was dropping out for some of the users and we couldn't work out what was going on. A couple got a "network incompatibility error 717" error. Two racers couldn't see each other for a few of the races.

All of us are in New Zealand and we're using a combination of ethernet cable and wireless. As the word has spread more friends are signing up so we had 6-8 racing last night.

If the game is physically hosted by the first user's PlayStation we need to make sure they are using an ethernet cable and on a fast/low-lag internet connection.

Answer

Quoting from the Gran Turismo FAQ:

What is the role of the host in an online race event?
Last Updated: Dec 24, 2007

In the online gameplay (Star type) of Gran Turismo 5 Prologue there is a host player.

The host has the following two roles:

(1) Manages the start and end of races.

(2) Performs the communication between all participant players for internal data communications during gameplay.

Because of this, if the host exits out of a race during the race, the race itself will be terminated. Also, please note that if the connection environment of the host deteriorates, the cars on screen may not drive properly.

For this reason, the software automatically evaluates the network connection environments of the participant players, to select the players with the most suitable network connection as the host.

The actual upstream bandwidth of the host is especially important since they will be communicating with other players. Therefore the software evaluates both the NAT type of the players, and the measured connection speed during actual play as well.

Regarding evaluation of your network connection environment, please refer to the following page.

I know this information covers the Prologue rather than GT5 itself, but I can't find any references to whether or not they changed the networking model between then and GT5. There is no other relevant FAQ entry for GT5, so I'm making the assumption that this information is still valid.

Based on this, it appears that the games are, indeed, hosted by one of the players and not on the PSN servers. If I'm reading this right, the game determines which player has the best connection as the time, so you shouldn't have to worry about it yourself. That said, having more people on a wired instead of wireless connection would help, since their bandwidth still matters for timely communication with other racers through the host.
