Any way to change the keyboard layout in Typing of the Dead? Or how to type a “#”

Question

I recently read this:

http://www.codinghorror.com/blog/2005/08/mavis-beacon-ate-my-brain.html

I installed the game and having been playing it (awesome game!). I already know how to touch type, but I'm going through the tutorials anyway. The tutorials show a keyboard layout that doesn't match mine. That alone wouldn't be a problem (as I said, I already know how to touch type) but it makes it impossible to type #. In the keyboard pictured, the # appears just to the left of the Enter key instead of above the 3. And during the tutorials, it doesn't register when I type Shift-3 (it shows the British pound sign there when I press Shift). There doesn't seem to be any way to type a #.

I guess it thinks I have a different key layout than I do (a British standard keyboard?). Anyway, is there any way to change it to my standard US PC keyboard layout?

If not, is there at least some combination of keys I can press so that the game will register #?

Asked by Ben Lee

Answer

I'm kicking myself now. I just spent half an hour researching this and just now on a whim I re-checked the options menu (which is actually the first thing I checked) and saw a Keyboard option that I was blind to see before. It gives options for "UK" and "US" and it was on the default of "UK".

How do I remove the limit on PC keyboard button presses?

Question

Whenever I play a PC game with the directional keys, I can only press two buttons at a time. For instance if I am playing a shooter like R-Type, I cannot hold down the fire button while moving diagonally at the same time. The computer simply ignores the extra button press.

How do I remove this limit so I can shoot while moving diagonally? This limitation seems to apply for every game.

I am running Windows 7 if it makes any difference. I noticed the same problem back when I used Windows XP.

Asked by Christian

Answer

This is a hardware limitation of your keyboard. Unfortunately, the only solution is that you must purchase a better keyboard that does not have this limitation.

To be more specific:

In order to save money, keyboard manufacturers often put many keys on the same "circuit" of sorts within the wiring of the keyboard. This prevents multiple keys in the same region of the keyboard from being pressed simultaneously. Sometimes it even prevents more than 2 keys at all from across the whole keyboard being pressed at once. Often the shift, ctrl, and alt keys are not within this limitation, so you can hold shift and press 2 other keys at once and it will still work fine.

Even high-end gaming keyboards often have a similar hardware limitation, although the cap is much higher so that it is unlikely to be reached during the normal course of gaming.

Keyboard with macros support from Blizzard

Question

I thought macros are prohibited from use in Starcraft 2 multiplayer, but recently I've found a keyboard being sold by Blizzard:

http://us.blizzard.com/store/details.xml?id=1100001142

Designed specifically for Blizzard Entertainment's highly anticipated Starcraft® II Wings of Liberty™, SteelSeries introduces the StarCraft® II Limited Edition Zboard™ Keyset. The custom designed keyset features labeled game commands on each key, in-game shortcuts, and artwork from the game. The gaming experience will enhance drastically due to one-touch macros and the ability to fully customize each key. This Limited Edition Keyset is a valuable tool for StarCraft II players looking to immerse themselves in the game and improve their performance and actions per minute (APM).

What does the bolded statement mean and what macros are supported/provided by this keyboard?

Thanks a lot.

How do I use function keys on a Mac?

Question

I recently switched my whole system to Mac OSX (Snow Leopard 10.6) from Windows 7. Now I've installed WoW and imported my old configs/addons without any problems, besides that my keybindings from F1 to F7 are completely overriden by some Mac functions like brightness/sound/keyboard backlight etc.

How can I use my F-Keys in games?

Asked by Rito

Answer

The option you want is in the Keyboard pane of your System Preferences:

Unfortunately this applies to all applications, not just WoW, which is kind of a pain because almost no other Mac OS X apps use the function keys for anything.

Are there alternate ways of opening the console in Oblivion

Question

I recently began playing Oblivion again, after a long hiatus. I'm doing so on my MacBook Pro, in a Parallels Windows Server 2008 VM (6 GB of RAM). The MacBook itself is the late 2011 17" Pro model, upgraded to 16 GB of RAM.

Everything in Oblivion, including the mods I've installed, works great -- except that I cannot bring up the console. The tilde (~) key is nonfunctional. That said, so far Oblivion is the only program on the Windows side to not recognize it. In Notepad, Visual Studio, Wordpad, etc., it works. Just Oblivion. (Admittedly, Oblivion is the only game I have on the Windows side here.)

Is there some way to open the console without the tilde, or failing that rebind the "open console" command via a configuration file, or failing that at least use a config file to display fps? (Which is actually the only reason I want the console right now.)

Total aside: The obvious answer to most of us would be to run Oblivion (and Windows in general) in Boot Camp. Not an option. Long story.

Update: I should have mentioned two things: 1) bAllowConsole is 1 and 2) I have no idea where to find the § symbol that everyone says is a workaround. (I have a US keyboard layout; that symbol is not on the face of any of my keys.) And again, the tilde works in every Windows app, just not -- I'm guessing -- games.

Answer

It's possible that your bAllowConsole setting in oblivion.ini has been disabled; it should be set to 1 to allow you to use the console.

Failing that, there are mods (of course) that add a spell that opens the console or let you change the console keybinding.

Is the difficulty in Typing of the Dead dynamic?

Question

I feel as though sometimes, particularly when fighting some of the bosses in the Original Mode, that the words I need to type to kill zombies are becoming more difficult in response to my performance throughout the stage, even though I always play on the same difficulty(Normal). Am I mistaken, or does the difficulty change depending on the stage path?

Answer

Turns out it's because of the tranquilizer power up I pick up occasionally, which, according to the game, weakens the zombies temporarily.

How to make the key 'WIN' used for key bindings?

Question

I know there is a method in windows to ban the WIN key(To edit the register), and when I hit the WIN key, nothing happens. However, can I use the key for key-bindings?

Answer

You can use a utility to rebind keys to other keys, or manually hack your registry to do so. Here's the source MSKB article that they used.

For instance, the following registry key will swap F11 and LWIN:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Keyboard Layout]
"Scancode Map"=hex:00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,03,00,00,00,57,00,5b,e0,5b,e0,57,00,\
  00,00,00,00

Broken down:

  • 00,00,00,00,: Version (0)
  • 00,00,00,00,: Flags (0)
  • 03,00,00,00,: Number of entries, including trailing null (3)
  • 57,00,5b,e0,: The left Windows Key (E0 5B, it's backwards) is interpreted as an F11 (00 57)
  • 5b,e0,57,00,: F11 (00 57) is interpreted as the left Windows Key (E0 5B)
  • 00,00,00,00 : Null ("we're done")

After modifying your registry, you must relog (or restart) in order for the changes to take effect.

What scancode is what key? See this WHDC article, specifically the Word document in it. Use the values from the "scan 1 make" column. Alternatively, some "keyboard test" utilities will tell you.

Once you've remapped keys in windows, you can bind them as you see fit.

Is it possible to relocate the camera to the binded group without double-tap?

Question

I'm looking for an alternative to double-click in StarCraft 2. I would like a number key (or a custom key) to relocate the camera to the associated numbered group with just a single-click. Is it possible?

Answer

The only three methods I am aware of are

  • Hit the number and then mouse-click at the unit portrait to center your screen over the selected unit/building
  • Bind your control group keys to 2 hotkeys (Primary and Alternative hotkey) and hit both after each other
  • Hit the hotkey for Center on Current selection (Ctrl+F by default)

Nevertheless, all ways would need 2 clicks or key presses anyway. But I think simple double-tapping is the fastest way to move your screen to a control group. Also you don't want your screen to move every time but only check what your group is doing, e.g. building or research progress.

What are the easiest PC keyboard controls for the Assassin's Creed series?

Question

I recently purchased this game, but I can't get my head around the controls.

I know it's meant for a 4-button gamepad (head, open hand, armed hand, feet), but I can't seem to get a system that is easy for me to use one hand to WASD move and control actions, while the other hand is stuck on the mouse that is barely used.

Has anyone got any suggestions for a simple control configuration? I'm coming from using WASD for movement and Mouse controls for attack, FPS style.

At the moment I'm using a combination of Ctrl/Shift/Alt/E, but it's too hard to get to whats what.

Answer

I've been able to work out that Button 0 and Button 1 are actually Left and Right Mouse (may be the other way around)

These can be assigned at the Controls > Customize Controls screen by clicking the Attack Hand/Open hand options and double left/right clicking (as you need to left click to start the assigning process)

Then, by using space for legs and E for head, the main controls sort of work ok.

I'm Currently using:

1-4 Weapon Change (sword, hidden blade, etc)

Space Legs

E Head

Left Click Attack Hand

Right Click Open hand.

That way, I can loot/attack mostly with the mouse. Pressing and holding W (up), E (head) and Space (legs), and directing myself with the mouse, gets me up and over rooftops ok.

I've only gotten to an early part of the game, so I haven't had time to perfect my keys. I'll update this post when I do, and let you know what is the best key arrangement (in my opinion).

UPDATE: The above works well, with Q/F in use for locking, etc.

This should be valid for AC:B too.

How do you swordfight in Tintin: Secret of the Unicorn?

Question

I was playing the pc game called Tintin, secret of the Unicorn in which there is a scene where Captain Haddock is sword-fighting with some enemies. The problem is that the only keys that seem to work are the W,A,S,D keys and they are only used for defending from attacks. I tried all the other keys and none of them do anything.

So any idea how we can fight back during these sword fights? Which keys?

Answer

Just move your mouse forward in order to attack, without pressing any keys, which serve only to defend.

How do I perform directional inputs for Street Fighter 4 on a PC Keyboard?

Question

I play SF4 on a Windows PC using the keyboard. How do I perform moves related to circle movements (ex:- quarter circle fwd, half circle fwd) using the keyboard keys?

Answer

I've managed to figure out all the moves of ken (after properly mapping the controls) and it turned out to be the same (almost at-least) for many others. It wasn't really easy figuring them out. Make sure you have the movement controls as wasd, uio as punches, jkl as kicks, y as triple punch and h as triple kick(or whatever its called). The rest where ever you find convenient. The ultra combo for Ryu is sd sd and y. Check how the movement is in the command list and cross check for a similar movement in the below mentioned characters. Here's a list of players having a similar controls(i.e.combos) scheme - Sagat,Ken,Ryu,Sakura,Dan,Abel,Viper & Dhalsim.

Note: some characters may have a slightly different movement for certain combos. Thanks to that, I've managed to finish the game as Sagat,Ryu,Ken,Dan and Sakura in medium difficulty and yes, I am aware of every move of those characters.

How do I fly the chopper with the keyboard?

Question

No matter how boldly and self-confident I hop into a helicopter in Battlefield: Bad Company 2, it takes only 5 seconds for me to lose control and crash the vehicle.

How do you control the choppers with just the mouse and the keyboard? I don't want to use a joystick or a pad.

Specifically, what is the typical keyboard layout? Do I need to use keys for both turning and yaw?

I also need to see it in action, so a video of the screen and ideally the keyboards would be extra nice.

Answer

I had the same issues starting out playing all Battlefield games. Flight in Helio type vehicles have been mostly unchanged on PC. The best way I've been able to control a helicopter (not using a joystick) is by using the Keyboard only. Using the mouse can be very tough, and sensitive.

Put both hands on the keyboard, left hand at WASD and right on the arrow keys. One hand will control propeller speed and yaw I believe. While the other hand will turn and tilt the chopper.

With some practice it should become a lot easier! This was all made with no modifications to key bindings.

Mouse and Keyboard for XBox 360?

Question

I know there are third party attachments you can get like the XFPS Sniper or the Mayflash Max. So two questions really.

1: Has Microsoft given a reason why they decided not to allow the use of a mouse on the XBox?

2: Do the XFPS Sniper or Mayflash Max really work? I have heard there are some latency issues.

Answer

I had to take some time to look this up (and plug things into my xbox) and I learned the following:

  • The Xbox 360 will accept keyboard and mouse input (I'm actually guessing on the mouse as it didn't do anything, but the 360 didn't complain).
  • This input is different in nature than the controller (thus you can't use it to play Halo for example)
  • You can use this to type into the Xbox Dashboard in any Text Input field.

I dug deeper into the XNA api and found the following:

  • The XNA Keyboard class provides different Enum from the Xbox controller
  • There is no explicit cast between the two (though a developer could write one)
  • The Keyboard and Controller are polled differently (so a developer must poll it separately from the Controller)
  • Because of the previous point, there is no built in way to associate a keyboard hooked into the 360 with an account without explicitly doing so (ie. the api doesn't handle this for you).

I hope this helps.

What is the best keyboard button setting you use to run fast in Assassin's Creed?

Question

I just started playing "Assassin's Creed". It's confusing me. I'm at the beginning, I have to run fast and win the race with one guy, but it's difficult to press 2 buttons at the same time and then also manage the direction and walking buttons. Am I doing it wrong or is running really dependent on pressing two buttons at the same time?

Can you please tell me what a good combination or key mapping will make running easier for me?

Answer

I find that a lot of console oriented games (which uses four controls buttons in addition to the keyboard) works nice with a multi-button mouse.

For AC2 specifically I have bound the high-profile to a button on the left of my mouse, legs to right-click, main hand to normal click, and off-hand* to wheel-click. **Head can be fairly affected to the keyboard as it is not of so much use.

This has the advantage of requiring me to concentrate on the movement keys on the keyboard (basically going forward, sometimes left and right movement) while having both high-profile and leg buttons pressed on the mouse. These buttons enable me to keep a nice grip and control over the mouse whenever I run.

For other games, I usually bind crouch, run, jump and other action on the keyboard. But usually they are not key you need to hold to much longer like in AC2, thus you don't have to worry about coordination too much or ghosting problems. But usually those games provides a better interface for customisation unlike AC-serie that enable you to customise 4 buttons and derive combinations with these.

How can I set auto-casting using hotkeys?

Question

Is there a way to set an SCV to auto-repair, or a carrier to auto-build interceptors completely with hotkeys?

I believe the question is also interesting for standard hotkeys but I use grid hotkeys.

Answer

Actually it's alt + key

One nice usage of it (besides of auto-repair and auto-making inteceptors for Carrier) it's an auto-unborrow on banelings so they unborrows as some unit is nearby thus acting like landmine without need to control them.

Is there easy way to use all digit buttons with left hand?

Question

Intro
I play RTS (starcraft 2 specifically) and now realize that I want to use more then 1..5 digits to bind my army / buildings / etc.

Problem
I cannot precisely hit 7..0 (neither ctrl+7..0 nor shift+7..0) keys without looking on the keyboard (my right hand controls the mouse of course)

Question
Do you know a way to easy hit 7,8,9,0 with left hand? Is there some mark that my hand could use (i.e. right ctrl) or something else?

edit
I don't want to buy any additional device. My question is all about behavior not environment. Plus you probably know that pro-gamers use normal keyboard and totally fine with it.
i.e. right now I realize that if I rotate keyboard clockwise a little then access to 7..0 becomes easier.

Answer

I have 6 and 7 remapped to F2 and F3 for my production buildings and main bases. If you have all your production on F2 you can just tab through them to select the different types.

Also, if you're Protoss you can just hit W to select all warp gates.

Can you call for a medic? How?

Question

I asked in game about how to call a medic and someone said that you press 'Q'. But I couldn't get it to work, so maybe this person was pulling my chain.

How do you call for a medic?

Answer

On PS3, you have to target a medic of your team and press Select. I suppose you're on PC and Q is the right key, so, you first have to target a medic of your team with your crosshair and instead of shooting, press the key! They have to be close enough. If it works, you'll hear your guy screaming out for help.

Is Super Meat Boy really harder with a keyboard?

Question

While poking around on Youtube I found many commenters saying "yeah, now try that with a keyboard." The game itself, however, only seems to suggest a controller to keep the "feeling" of the game.

enter image description here

I played with the keyboard so far, and I'm 10 levels from completing world 5. Sure, my completion rates for worlds 2-5 are below 30% and I only have 11/100 bandages so far – I still do value my sanity – yet I'd rather think it's me not being good enough, than thinking I'm bringing artificial difficulty onto myself for not wanting to buy a controller.

The only gripe I have with the controls is that you need to release Space after having gained enough elevation before you can jump again by pressing Space again. I'm not sure using a smaller button, or a different finger, would make this any less frustrating however.

Is Super Meat Boy actually harder to play with a keyboard?

Answer

Super Meat Boy is harder to play with a keyboard.

Gamepads can detect how much you are pushing the control stick in a direction; there are partial actions. Jumping to the right with 30% of run speed is possible to do.

Keyboards only detect whether you're pressing a key or not; you are either performing an action or not. So if you want to jump to the right with 30% of run speed you have to tap the right key at a certain frequency to simulate what the gamepad would otherwise do for you. This is especially difficult with a less than perfectly responsive keyboard.

Buying a gamepad is worth it depending on your experience with PC platformers. The gamepad and keyboard have different mindsets, and having already played through a good chunk of Super Meat Boy with the keyboard you'll have to spend time switching to the gamepad mindset. If you're a long-time player of PC platformers this will prove a painful transition. If you're not, then getting a feel for the gamepad will happen after replaying a few levels and you'll find the game much easier.
