Do I get less experience if a high-level friend accompanies me? [closed]

Question

Possible Duplicate:
How does experience work in groups of heroes with different levels?

My friend and I both have Diablo 3, but he has more play time, and so has a much higher level. Sometimes he comes back and does the same quests I'm still on, but when he does it feels like I am getting less experience. Is this all in my head, or do I get less XP if higher-level players are in my party?

Asked by Wikwocket

Answer

According to this answer by Sean:

There is no party experience split.

All members in your party will receive the same experience as long as they are within "a screen and a half" of the kill. The experience you won't receive comes from bonuses like the Massacre bonus or boosts from equipment.

How does bonus experience on weapons work?

Question

I currently have a bunch of equipment that gives experience bonuses, but how do equipped weapons give experience? I have a sword that gives a +10 experience per kill, but do I have to use the weapon in the kill to gain the bonus?

Since I am using the Witch Doctor as my class and most of my kills are from a distance with magic, I wasn't sure how that worked.

Asked by C-dizzle

Answer

No, you do not have to use the weapon to get the kill.

The majority of the games characters do not directly use their weapons in their attacks. Most of them are just ways to bolster stats and give a baseline for damage. The monk, for instance, is a highly melee focused class, but does not use his weapons (unless they are fist weapons).

That bonus you see on the weapon is added to your cumulative bonus total.

Is there a way to stop gaining experience in World of Warcraft?

Question

I've reached a certain level. I want to be able to queue lower level dungeons in the dungeon/party finder without becoming too high for them. Is there a way to stop leveling or do I simply have no option but to keep leveling?

Note: I have ALL the expansions

Asked by James Jiao

Answer

From WoW Wiki: Level Locking

To keep your character from leveling higher for any reason, follow these steps:

For the Horde Horde faction:

  1. Go to the Hall of the Brave, Valley of Honor in Orgrimmar.
  2. Look for and talk to Horde Slahtz.
  3. For 10g he will put a hold on all experience points earned.

You can enable your experience again by seeing Slahtz and paying another 10g.

For the Alliance Alliance faction:

  1. Go to the War Room, Stormwind Keep in Stormwind City.
  2. Look for and talk to Alliance Behsten.
  3. For 10g he will put a hold on all experience points earned.

You can enable your experience again by seeing Behsten and paying another 10g .

What causes experience discrepency between members of the same party in Dungeon Defenders?

Question

I have started a new hero in the Ranked mode of Dungeon Defenders, along with my brother. Both heroes have started at 0 XP, and have only been played at the same time. Yet up until level 20, I was 5k XP behind, and since then, my character has been steadily going ahead, to the point that I am now 20K XP ahead.

Since we've only compared experience every few level ups, we can't tell which match these differences occured in.

According to this question and the wiki, experience should be shared evenly among all party members, so I don't know what has caused this.

If it helps, his character is a squire, and mine is an apprentice.

Asked by Macha

Answer

There are various Awards that you can earn at the end of a map which can cause this discrepancy. Some of them are flat bonuses, like Knight and Lord, but others, like Invincible (for not taking any damage after the first wave) and Gunslinger (only using weapons and abilities after the first wave) are multipliers (1.2x for those 2 in particular, last time I knew).

For instance, as I was leveling my DPS Huntress, I was able to keep up in experience levels (and sometimes, even outlevel) my other 3 companions because I consistently received the Gunslinger award, giving me 1.2x to my score.

If your Apprentice is using only towers, whereas he is using a mix of towers and character DPS, you may be getting the Master Strategist (used only defenses to harm all enemies after the first wave), which is another 1.2x multiplier.

How does the rested experience system work?

Question

When I first started playing Star Wars: The Old Republic, I was pleased to see a rested experience system in place. I had made extensive use of it in World of Warcraft, and planned to do the same here. I was quickly disappointed to learn that all of my rested experience was eaten up after a short few quests. Not a dealbreaker, but disappointing.

Fast forward a few planets, and I'm now in the high-20's for levels. I also can't seem to use the rested experience up at all now. Not complaining, but I don't do anything out of the ordinary (log off in Cantinas is about it) and just can't use it up fast enough!

How do the mechanics of the rested experience system in Star Wars: The Old Republic work?

Asked by Aeo

Answer

Rested XP doubles all combat kill xp. It does not double exploration, quests, PVP, etc.

There are two ways of gaining rest XP in SWTOR.
While logged off you gain a small amount of rested xp. This amount is the same regardless of where you log out.

In addition, anytime you are in a "safe area" (most cantinas, fleet, your ship) you gain rest XP. The two ways of gaining rest XP stack if you log out in a safe area.

Your maximum rest XP is equal to the total amount of XP needed to get through your current level.

How much XP does it take to get to level 30?

Question

Level 30 is the max level for a Summoner, but how much XP does it take to get there? About how many 5v5 matches does it take to get that much (assuming 50% win/loss ratio)?

Asked by Aceofgods

Answer

According to the wiki, it takes 40083xp.

Also from the wiki:

Assuming an average XP gain to be about 110 XP per game, one can reach summoner level 30 within 365 normal games.

What is the most efficient level for enchanting?

Question

According to the Minecraft Wiki article on enchanting, with full bookshelves, the max level is 50, so all further levels are pointless. While this is pretty straightforward, it's not too efficient to get to level 50 before enchanting, since experience yields diminishing returns.

I am going for maximum enchantments, aiming for an enchanted pick with 2-3 enchantments of high level. What's the lowest level where I can achieve this, and does getting to level 50 actually improve the chances of getting these high-level enchantments?

Asked by Jake King

Answer

In Short, yes getting to level 50 gives you the best chances of multiple high-end enchantments.

In Long:

Your kind of riding a grumpy horse on this one. You want the most efficient level to get enchantments. That would be level 50, there is no ifs, ands, or buts about it. Flat out, a higher level gives you the greatest chances of getting multiple enchants. Period.

You can still get the highest level of specific enchants at some levels lower than 50 depending on the type of item you enchant, but generally speaking I would strongly suggest you enchant diamont toos\weapons\armor only, because they last longer so you get more bang for your 'buck' of experience. As listed on the wiki Diamond Items dont have the best qualities for enchanting, but 1300+ uses from a Pickaxe of Fortune III is just too good to pass up if you ask me.

Multiple Enchantments

The formulae for multiple enchants works like this:

1--After the first element is selected, there is a chance of receiving more, based on this algorithm:

2--Divide the modified level in half, rounded down. (This does not affect the possible enchantments themselves, because they were all pre-calculated in Step Two.)

3--With probability (modified level + 1) / 50, keep going. Otherwise, stop picking bonus enchantments.

4--Remove from the list of possible enchantments anything that conflicts with previously-chosen enchantments.

5--Pick one enchantment from the remaining possible enchantments (based on the weights, as before) and apply it to the item.

6--Repeat from step 1.

Now what this means for you is that the higher your MODIFIED LEVEL is during your enchantment instance, the greater chance you have for the keep going. And those two words are what gives an item multiple enchantments.

In the second step of the process you can see that it divides your modified level in half. I will go into what a modified level is later in the post, but lets just say its your actual level (50), for the sake of argument. Now divide 50 in half for twenty five, add one to it (26) and throw it on top of /50. That gives you just a bit better than a 50\50 shot on two enchants for your weapon. Thats not bad. It gets much much worse as you keep going though. Each time the repective chances are halved. Rather than do all the math here on Gaming.SE the wiki states:

A level 50 diamond pickaxe would have a 16.10% chance to have 3 enchantments, a 48.09% chance to have exactly 2 enchantments and a 35.80% chance to have exactly 1 enchantment.

You can see there that at level 50 you actually have a Greater chance to get two enchantments than you do to get one. And only 16.10% chance to get three. If you want to get three your best chances are at level 50, and they are still not very good.

Specific Enchantments by Level

This part is somewhat less tricky because the wiki provides us with a wonderfully easy to read graph. I however, suck at Microsoft Paint, and cannot make a sexy.jpg of it. Ill do my best here.
(Modified Enchantment Level in parenthesis)

Efficiency Enchantment
Level 1 (1-51) Level 2 (15-66) Level 3 (33-81) Level 4 (46-96) Level 5 (61-111)

Silk Touch Enchantement
Level 1 (25-75)

Unbreaking Enchantment
Level 1 (5-55) Level 2 (15-65) Level 3 (25-75)

Fortune Enchantment
Level 1 (20-70) Level 2 (32-82) Level 3 (44-94)

This section is pretty straightfoward. If your modified enchanting level falls into any of these number brackets you have the possibility to get that enchantment.

Some notes:
This part is decided before the number of enchantments are decided. So the halving of your MEL (modfied enchantment level) doesn't affect this adversly. All possible enchants are decided before the # of enchantments comes into play.

If your MEL falls into TWO different level brackets of the same enchantment, then the highest possible level is used.

You cannot get Silk Touch and Fortune. Getting one automatically disqualifies your item for the other.

Modified Enchantment Level

All that stated, your going to need to know how to get your MEL. Which is easy.

modified enchantment level = enchantment level + Random(0, enchantability) + 1

Enchantment Level = Your Experience Level

Random(0,enchantability) + 1 = a random number between 0 and the items enchantibility, and then add 1 to that.

(enchantibility is an items enchantibility determined by the type of item it is, diamond, gold, wood, ect. these are listed on the wiki as well.)

Once you have your MEL from the above formulae, the game modifies it further one last time, either increasing or reducing it by a random percentage that caps at 25% more or less than it was originally. (100 can turn into anything from 75 to 125)

I think this is everything you would need to know. Let me know if I missed something in comments and I'll be sure to add it in or clarify it.

Edit #1: Fixed a mistake in the enchantibility formulae.

How to maximize summoner XP gain in League of Legends?

Question

What is the most efficient way to gain experience in LoL?
How is experience gain calculated? I've heard Dominion is better for experience than classic; is that true?

Asked by Kimi

Answer

To maximize XP gain:

  • Buy XP boosts. You can stack duration and per win boosts.
  • Play PvP instead of AI
  • If you insist on AI, play intermediate instead of beginner
  • Surrender if you can't win (to maximize games played)
  • Invite friends. Referrals give bonus IP, which help you win (and get more exp)

However, I don't recommend trying to level up quickly. IP is much more important for buying Tier 3 runes, and your time is better spent maximizing IP gain.

Exp calculation:

Current (July 2011) formula for XP winning a Normal game at level 15-19 is roughly 3m+25, where m is the number of minutes the game lasts, capped at 198. Intermediate Bot games at level 10-14 use the same formula. At level 15-19, Intermediate Bot games subtract a 25% penalty from that formula, and give XP for only the first 180 minutes a day of play.

I just reached level 50 and it is suddenly getting pretty tough to level up. I heard somewhere that on GoW 2 level 70 was about halfway to 100, but on GoW 3 it is around level 60.

Multipliers given during a round of DD

Question

I've looked around but can't seem to find a centralized list of all the bonuses and multipliers one can strive for during a round of Dungeon Defenders.

I see that if the crystal doesn't get attacked, no damage taken, etc, but what I'd like to see is a bulleted list of everything I could attempt to attain for maximum XP-age.

Answer

Score is determined in several ways:

  1. Speed to complete the mission
  2. Player and Team bonuses (listed below)
  3. Killing Enemies

Wave Bonuses:

  • Immortal - Did not die throughout the entire match
  • Invincible - Did not take damage for an entire wave after the first
  • Knight - Killed 10 enemies in 5 seconds
  • Lord - Killed 50 enemies in 5 seconds
  • Strategist - Scored the most tower kills
  • Banker - Earned the most mana
  • Trigger Happy - Most first to ready for Combat Phase
  • Handy Man - Performed the most tower repairs
  • Janitor - Scored the last kill in the wave
  • Chillax - Moved the least distance in the wave
  • Flawless Victory - No core damage after the first wave
  • Most Valuable Hero - Scored the most player kills
  • Teamwork - Completed a mission with 4 active players
  • Skin of Your Teeth - Survived a wave after the first with <100 Crystal Health Points on at least Medium difficulty
  • First Kill - Scored the first kill in the wave
  • Mechanic - Performed the most tower upgrades
  • Boss Slayer - Your Hero or Defense landed the killing blow on a boss
  • Master Builder - Kept full Defense Units throughout the wave
  • Master Strategist - Only used Defenses to harm enemies after the first wave
  • Gunslinger - Only used Abilities/Weapons to harm enemies after the first wave
  • Most Valuable Player - Scored the most total kills

I have read that the algorithm used to calculate the score is rather complex, but I haven't been able to find it anywhere. I don't know if Trendy has released it.

Is there enough XP to unlock every upgrade in Payday: The Heist?

Question

I've been playing Payday: The Heist, which has three upgrade trees (assault, sharpshooter, support).

Each time you gain a level, you proceed one step further up one of the trees. You can only ever be on one tree at any one time, though you can change which tree you're on instantly at any moment.

Right now I've been upgrading each tree equally. However, I'm starting to wonder: is there enough XP in the game to allow me to fully upgrade every tree, or should I pick the one I like most and upgrade only that tree?

Answer

Yes, there are currently 144 "levels" each level giving you the next upgrade in your currently selected leveling tree.

I'm pretty sure you can select which tree you're leveling by hitting tab + 1, 2, or 3, depending on which tree you want to level.

Which game type in COD: MW3 gets you the most XP (on average)?

Question

Obviously this changes based on your proficiency in a game type along with a myriad of other variables...

But, generally speaking, which game type in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 gains you the most XP (on average)?

Answer

I've been having really good luck with Kill Confirmed. You get XP for kills, plus for their tags, plus if you can find a) other tags from friendly kills or b) red tags from enemy kills you'll also get XP. A really good thing to try and do is to go back and get your own tags after your killed, it's a +250 XP bump.

When playing Conquest, where are all of those points coming from?

Question

When playing Conquest, I stay pretty mobile and basically focus on deterring the enemy, capturing flags and destroying vehicles (my favorite). I typically end up with about 3000-4000 points with 15 or so kills. I never camp as it bores the piss outta me.

My question: I always see a guy that has 8000-9000 points, but he'll only have about 10 more kills. I'm sure he didn't capture 20 more flags, so is this person just camping our own flags, defending and just getting all the bonuses associated with that while handing out ammo or health? I've had a couple 7000 point rounds, but those are rare.

Answer

There's a ton of ways to get a ton of points, as you might imagine. Sometimes in these objective modes people "are playing a different game" as I like to say - they're just deathmatching with no real intent on completing the goals of the game. This can drag out the rounds and make it more likely that you'll score tons of points. I found a couple of videos of game replays where people had high scores though, and it seemed like they were focusing on capturing flags, using fast vehicles if available:

If I don't choose to prestige, can I still gain experience?

Question

After reaching level 80 and earning enough XP to prestige (81?), what happens if I chose not to prestige? Do I continue to rack up or accumulate XP (that can be seen when I eventually prestige) or am I stagnant at the max XP cap for the first set of ranks? I understand that guns will continue to level and that I can unlock titles and such, which is partly why I'm holding off leveling, I am close to finishing a challenge on the MK14 and don't want to lose my progress.

Answer

No, you do not gain additional XP, and any XP you gain over the amount needed to get to "prestige rank" or level 81, is lost. You can gain weapon XP, but know that your weapon XP will completely reset every time you prestige, even if you choose to unlock that weapon via a prestige token.

If you're close to finishing a big challenge, you might hold off on prestige mode, but all you'll be doing if you wait and finish is unlocking a new title and/or emblem at best. You can generally tell if a challenge will unlock a title or emblem by looking at the appropriate challenge in the Barracks. Challenges that will unlock new titles or emblems at the next level have a small title or emblem icon with a "lock" over it. The other rewards from challenges (generally just XP) will not carry over to your new prestige.

Emblems and titles are really the only things that carry over from prestige to prestige. Most challenges will also reset, and you could do them again, but you won't unlock anything new. Notice also that there is a special set of challenges/emblems that can only be unlocked after the first time you prestige. Some of these are "lifetime" challenges that do not reset on additional prestiges.

How do you spend experience in Minecraft?

Question

I assumed with 1.0 you got a way to spend your experience, but I noticed no way to do that.

Is that still work in progress, or I missed some kind of option somewhere?

Answer

In Minecraft 1.0 the new enchanting system was added. Once you have some diamond and obsidian (plus a book), you can craft an enchantment table, which will allow you to put enchantments on your weapons, armor, and tools in exchange for experience.

“Double XP” vs “Double Weapon XP” in MW3

Question

What's the difference between "Double XP" vs "Double Weapon XP" in Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3?

Which is the better choice?

Answer

Double XP will cause your "Player Level" (Your actual level) to progress at twice the normal rate, which will cause you to unlock new guns and perks at twice the normal rate (while it's active)

Double Weapon XP will cause your "Weapon Levels" (the level noted individually for every weapon) to progress at twice the normal rate, which will cause you to unlock new attachments for that specific gun at twice the normal rate (while it's active).

Double XP will not cause your guns to level up faster, and Double Weapon XP will not cause you to level up faster.

Both can be active at the same time however, causing both you and your guns to level up twice as quickly.

Is there enough XP in Payday: The Heist to unlock every upgrade?

When should I use a Rare Candy?

Question

I'm reading a guide for Pokémon Blue and it says I should save my Rare Candies for "later". Why should I save them and when should I use them?

Answer

There's two general reasons to save Rare Candies for later.

  1. It takes more experience to gain the higher levels. As such, if you use Rare Candies on the early levels, you're pretty much wasting them as the experience they'd be worth on a higher level Pokémon is far greater than on a lower level one. Especially as you don't generally encounter Pokémon higher than level 70, which means your experience income doesn't quite reach all that high.

  2. Your Pokémon gain bonuses to their stats based on fighting other Pokémon. This is what makes the whole "Trained pokémon are stronger than wild pokémon of the same level" point, is from this stat bonus. Generations 1-4, however, this stat bonus can only be realized when leveling up during actual battle. The system was changed in Generation 5 but this "must level during battle" factor is present in Blue.

The amount of bonus stats you can gain does have a cap, though. If you've been thoroughly training a Pokémon since the lower levels (or if you just fed them a bunch of stat-raising vitamins, which correspond to the bonus stats), you'll probably have hit that cap by the time you should start using Rare Candies.

In general, the above basically means to train your Pokémon very well, and generally only use Rare Candies when you've gotten to such a high level that reaching the last levels is a taxing process. By that time, you should have maxed your bonus stats (unless you caught them at a particularly high level).

How does experience work in Dungeon Defenders?

Question

While playing Dungeon Defenders with friends, some of them aren't gaining as much experience as others. We started to worry Squires were kill stealing the Apprentices. But in the end we couldn't figure out how exactly our characters gain experience.

So how do you gain experience:

Is it by damage dealt?
Is more last hit style?
How does this apply to defense structures?

Answer

Actually, experience is only gained from the kills, so it's the person to land the killing blow would gain the experience from that enemy. This applies to defense structures as well. The person owning the defensive structure that gets the killing blow, will earn the experience.

You also gain experience from the various medals/awards you can get on the waves and levels:
