How do you fully explore level 1 of the VVVVVV demo?

Question

The only connection to the lower areas seems to be through Exhaust Chute, but spikes make it impossible to reach the lower half of the Sensible Room and the Tomb of Mad Carew. A Wrinkle in Time is actually a dead end.

Is this all I can explore in the demo?

After spoiling myself and watching a few videos on Youtube I can say that yes, that's all that can be explored in the demo version.

What the demo fails to explain is that actually you start a "level" by reaching its starting sector in free roam through the game's world. That is, the full version does not yank you to a level selection screen after rescuing the first crew member. The opening in the pink area allows for further exploration.

How do I change the default "Save File Location" in VVVVVV on Mac OS X?

Usually, VVVVVV saves the games in my Documents folder. How can I change this? I don't want my saved games appearing in my documents folder – I just don't know how to change the location without corrupting my progress.

I ended up just moving the saved file to a different folder when I don't want to play VVVVVV, and when I do want to play, I just move it back. There's no error that comes up, and no corruption of the file. It's just a simple drag and click. Not exactly a technical solution, but it works!

How do I beat "Prize for the Reckless"?

Now I know that the top platform is split and if I dissolve one half the other will move back and forth but by the time I work my way through all the other screens to get back to the bottom half, the floating panel has reappeared, trapping my ride to the trinket. What do I do?

Answer

You have to make it from the bottom to the top without touching any checkpoints. That way, you can free the sliding platform, die, and respawn below, in position to collect the trinket.

The most important part is that you must respawn in the same room. Else the platforms will reset and you'll be stuck again.

Where does VVVVVV save game progress?

In what location on the filesystem does VVVVVV store your progress through the game when you save in game?

In whatever folder Flash stores its saved data. On Windows, that's %APPDATA%\Macromedia\Flash Player\#SharedObjects\<random characters>\localhost\path\to\vvvvvv\vvvvvv.exe\.The random characters vary from computer to computer, so you'll have to check for yourself.

(I don't know where Flash stores data on Linux or Mac, but I would expect it's somewhere in your user folder.)

To give a concrete example, if you've placed VVVVVV.exe in C:\Program Files\VVVVVV\, then your saved data will be in %APPDATA%\Macromedia\Flash Player\#SharedObjects\<random characters>\localhost\program files\vvvvvv\vvvvvv.exe\.

If you've bought it on Steam, you should go to %APPDATA%\Macromedia\Flash Player\#SharedObjects\<random characters>\localhost\path\to\steam\steamapps\common\vvvvvv\vvvvvv.exe.

Note that this mean you will lose your saves if you do a generic clean of your Flash saved data.
