How do I fix my vintage world?

Question

My favorite single-player map is relatively old - created no later than beta 1.1. Since then, the terrain generation algorithms have changed. When I explore any farther, I'm faced with glitches like sliced mountains and differences in sea level.

I tried making a new world with the same seed, but it turned out completely different.

Is there a way to smooth the transition between the old and new automatically, or will I have to run around terraforming myself?

Answer

The world generation has radically changed since 1.8 (and will change again in 1.9+), so it's most likely not possible to directly run your world again. In my tests, a world imported from 1.7.3 into 1.8 did have significant changes in the biomes and the landscape.

A workaround which would always work, if you're ready to relinquish new features, would be to keep the binaries (~/.minecraft/bin) of the old version around and swap them around as needed.

What resources will be impossible to acquire when structures are disabled?

Question

I'm considering starting a map with the structures option disabled since I don't really like the villages and the abandoned mine shafts. The mine shafts especially, seems to take over all underground areas to a point where it is hard to find any natural cave systems.

I also realized that ravines, which I like a lot, will still be generated when structures are disabled.

The one resource I know I will miss are melons but giving 1 melon seed as server admin should fix that.

So what other resources of importance will be impossible to find when structures are disabled?

Answer

Abandoned mine shafts

  • As you said, Melon Seeds will be unavailable.

Strongholds

  • The cracked and mossy variants of Stone Bricks will be unavailable as a building material; normal Stone Bricks can be crafted.
  • Air portal frames will be unavailable, and with it the entire unreleased dimension that they will very likely lead to at some point.
  • Red Apple

Nether ruins

  • Nether Brick
  • Nether Brick Fence
  • Nether Brick Stairs
  • Nether Wart

Which District is Which?

Question

There are various statistics in Crackdown 2 that tell you how many of a certain thing you've found in each area of the game. Problem is, I can't remember which area is which, and there's no indication in the game other than the first time you enter a new zone. This means the statistics are effectively useless to me at the moment. The districts are labeled as:

  • Hope Springs
  • Green Bay
  • Unity Heights
  • Agency Island

Included is a map of the FIRST Crackdown's pacific city, because the only maps I could find of the second one contain orb spoilers.

Map of Pacific City

Based on this map of the first game, can someone fill me in on which of these areas is which in Crackdown 2 (i.e. which colour shown here is which area)?

Answer

  • The northern yellow area is Green Bay North
  • The southern yellow island is Green Bay South
  • The northern blue area above the highway is Unity Heights North
  • The 2 islands below the highway are Unity Heights South
  • The northern red area is Hope Springs North
  • The southern red area is Hope Springs South
  • Agency Island is the purple area in the middle

You can find a whole overview of the areas on this map. It is a zoomed out view, and you need to click on the separate districts to zoom in to see the orb locations, but you don't see them in the overview. So if you're worried about orb spoilers, you can safely look at this map without getting spoiled.
